The Kingdom of Septima is ruled in all but name by the Commune, a ruthless cult that seeks control of an ancient power that has taken root in unsuspecting children in Septima. To maintain their hold on the kingdom, the Commune will stop at nothing to capture children who show signs of this power, to be weaponised or eliminated.

18-year-old Evelyn Folksman is in hiding. Taken in by a tavern-owner, she is haunted by the horrific events that drove her from her home years before. Evelyn is forced to face her past when two wayward children, Raif and Rose Huntsman, arrive at the tavern, pursued by Commune soldiers. The children fall under Evelyn’s reluctant care as the trio narrowly escape a raid.

Relentlessly hunted by Commander Jonah Sulemon and Commune agent Lord Eirik Torrant, Evelyn and Raif cannot fathom why they pose such a threat to the Commune, until six-year-old Rose unwittingly reveals a terrible secret: she possesses powers more fearsome than any the Commune has unearthed in decades. There are only two options: to be captured and imprisoned, or to run for the rest of their lives.

As a writer, Lucy spends her time capturing on paper the imaginary kingdoms, far-off places and characters who live there (and their pets, of course) that her brain throws at her at completely random times of day.

She’s been a fan of fantasy stories since she was a child, but especially loves to explore her characters through the real-world lens of mental health— what have they been through, what are they feeling and why are they how they are? She uses a mix of counselling theory and D&D backstories when creating her characters. Add a pinch of magic, ruthless cults, authoritarian, patriarchal leaders or murderous lunatics, and perhaps a talking animal or two, and you’ll have an idea of what her stories involve.

Her favourite books and series include His Dark Materials, The Priory of the Orange Tree, Liveship Traders, and The Age of Madness. She’s an avid video game player and loves epic roleplaying games, including God of War, Horizon series, The Witcher 3, and Legend of Zelda series. She also enjoys smaller, character-focused games like Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture or What Remains of Edith Finch.

When not writing, you can find her spending time with her husband and young son, attempting to find time to watch the latest superhero or fantasy film or TV series, or taking way too many photos in her local parks and woods.

This journey originally started with me pretty much spamming the author’s page with likes because of how much I loved this cover. I was then very graciously offered an e-ARC, so how do you like them apples. Still love the cover, now I get to love the novel.

So the original title for this was ‘A Child’s Awakening’ and the e-arcs came with that original title on the cover. Just wanted to point out how cool I think that is when you get something that feels like a b-side or second, and then you literally have it forever (another example: my copy of Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good came with the book inserted upside down into the attached hardcover…). Anyway, just thought that was a really cool tidbit, the title ‘Awakening’ is much broader, as it is fitting to several others, not just children, so great choice on the author’s part.

The author sets up an interesting first novel. There is not a lot of action, but when there is, it is well done and the pacing is right. As a fantasy, this is very dialogue driven, and with that in mind, it felt kind of reminiscent of Andrzej Sapkowski’s style (to me). You spend a lot of your time absorbed in what they’re saying, and therefore it’s not all about what they are doing. Very tricky, especially for a debut!!

The author gives the characters life with all their own traits, thoughts, quirks, and twitches. With this being young adult, their are multiple children in the story, and even they don’t read as flat or similar. Two of the main characters even are brother and sister, and they read as drastically different. The bad people, or the outright villains, also read as multilayered, with redeeming qualities or traumas, so that they don’t just read as “evil” or “bad.” I was very impressed by the fact that I found myself caring for people that were not viewed as good, or found myself disliking someone that was supposed to be helping.

The magic system is interesting, but still a little hazy to me. I think that works well only because the people with powers are often untrained, especially the children. So in that sense, they don’t know what the magic is or how it works either, so when reading it feels more like mutual discovery. The ability to take over and control others’ minds is a pretty continuous one during the story, and that is a !crazy! power. Also, although it is not really explained, the ability for some magic wielders to connect with an animal companion is really cool! I would love to the see the story continue and use some larger, less frequently seen animals as companions, like a lion, hippopotamus, or even an eagle/hawk (kind of Assassin’s Creed-esque).

In terms of plotting this isn’t really something you haven’t seen before by any means, however it is certainly refreshed and interesting throughout so that it doesn’t feel the same as other novels. The author really drives home character, and therefore relationships, which is not always something that goes hand in hand (at least done well…), and I’m really impressed with it. And talk about a cliffhanger ending!

I absolutely need a copy of this for my own shelf, not just for the amazing cover, but because I am very impressed with the work. Have I intrigued anyone? Was anyone looking out for this one anyway?! The novel releases May 1st and it can be preordered now!!

I was given an e-arc by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Lucy!

This is the first book in the YA fantasy series The commune’s curse.
The fact that this is a debut blows my mind. It is so well written and the world building is well developed.
The story itself is slow and mostly driven by dialogue and interactions, but even though there’s minimal action in this story, I was never bored. That’s really impressive to pull off, especially for a debut! I found the characters so interesting and the magic system very unique and original.
In this book you’ll find LGBTQ+ representation and the found family trope.

This book felt fresh and new, and unlike anything I’ve read before. If you like YA fantasy, I would definitely recommend this.

So I’ll confess and start by saying that I read an ARC of this some time ago and have only just gotten around to writing this review. This is by no means a reflection of the quality of the book, and more of an apology for taking so long! Awakening is the first book in The Commune’s Curse trilogy and the debut novel of Lucy A. McLaren. And wow, what a strong debut this is!

Awakening is a dark Young Adult fantasy featuring both younger and older POV characters within the Kingdom of Septima. This kingdom is ruled by the Commune, a cult that amasses power for itself by taking in children who show magical abilities and effectively enslaving them or using them as soldiers. Those who stand against the Commune find their villages destroyed, making resistance all but impossible. The story, then, revolves around teenager Evelyn and the two young children who come under her charge. Haunted by the darkness of her past, Evelyn is doing what she can to survive in a world that rarely shows mercy. She makes it her duty to protect siblings Raif and Rose, who are dealing with their own trauma after watching their village burn down. The story goes through Evelyn and Raif’s point of view as they learn to trust and help each other on the road to survival – and to find the only resistance group that can help.

There are two other character POV’s in Awakening as well – Hector, a member of the resistance and an older gent with a pet cat he can telepathically communicate with, and Commander Sulemon, a member of the Commune who is hunting down Raif and Rose. Both of these bring a wider lens to the overall story of the Commune’s control of the kingdom, and honestly, I think they change the story from being a typical YA fantasy to something that’s more adult.

You see, I’m a big fan of YA fantasy books and have read a wide range of older and modern YA fantasy books, New Adult books, and crossovers that bridge the gap between teenage and adult readers. Having written my own YA fantasy stories, I know that it’s not just teens who are reading these books! YA fantasy can absolutely tackle dark themes, which Awakening does; there’s trauma, heartache, mental health issues, alcohol addiction, torture, authoritarian oppression – the whole dark fantasy gamut. But Commander Sulemon’s scenes can be especially dark as they deal with a toxic relationship, and unhealthy ways of dealing with that toxic relationship, which I think makes this story upper YA, if not crossing into adult territory. Adult fantasy can have younger POV characters (as is the case in Raif’s scenes). Evelyn herself thinks and acts like a teen, but wouldn’t be out of place in an adult fantasy novel, especially as she deals with her own trauma in unhealthy ways. Many women authors have their books aged down into being YA and here I am trying to age this one up! But that could just be my own biases talking. Awakening is a more mature YA story that doesn’t ‘feel’ YA as it focuses more on developing in-depth character relationships than fast-paced action. Quite often, some YA stories can feel quite shallow on the surface, whereas Awakening absolutely does not. All this to say that if you’re put off by the YA fantasy tag, then don’t be.

As a debut, Awakening is beautifully written with thoughtful world building, even if the world is mostly bleak. There are sparks of hope throughout, especially between the younger characters of Raif and Rose, who have a delightful and realistic sibling relationship. While I spent a whole paragraph describing this book as being adult (I’m sorry!), it’s quite clear to see that this story takes inspiration from some of my favourite YA fantasy series, especially His Dark Materials due to the animal companions. I’m always happy to see talking animal companions! While I mentioned the POV characters above, there are also letters between the antagonists which also add to the developing background story and world building that I enjoyed.

There is action here, as well as plenty of danger and peril, but it’s the quieter scenes where I think this story really shines. And though Awakening looks to be a classic tale of oppressed magical users taking on their authoritarian kingdom, the story develops at its own pace and ends with a twist that will surely open up the world within the sequels. I personally look forward to seeing where the series goes next.

Lastly, I simply MUST bring attention to the absolutely gorgeous cover art for Awakening. I’m a sucker for swords and plants and I guess now swords covered in plants? It’s a beautiful cover, and it’s not often we’re blessed with green covers either!

Awakening is a mature dark fantasy with heart that tackles difficult subjects in a thoughtful way. Lucy A. McLaren is an author to watch!

I got chatting with Lucy on Twitter and we bonded over a love of Fantasy books, then it turned out she’d written her own. Next thing you know I have an advance uncorrected proof winging its way over to me!

Set in the fictional kingdom of Septima, its inhabitants can be born with powers but this is something that the ruling elite known as the Commune wants to stamp out – who wants a population who could rise up and overthrow you?
We follow the story of Raif and Rose who are fleeing the Commune after they raided their village either killing or kidnapping those who lived there. They reach a new village where they meet Evelyn, and both have things they wish to hide from each other and the Commune.

I could not put this book down, despite constant interruptions from family! Lucy has created a brilliant fantasy world with well-rounded characters, I was kind of surprised that this is her debut!

Don’t worry if you’re not really a fantasy reader though because this story is full of familiar themes like belonging, corruption, displacement, etc. Big warning though there are sections that deal with upsetting things such as murder, torture, and rape. Unlike some other fantasy books, I’ve read none of these things seem to be shoehorned in for the sole purpose of shock tactics. Lucy has highlighted the horrors born upon those with low social standing or who are fleeing persecution but in a sensitive way.

Evelyn was probably both my favourite and almost least favourite character in equal measure. I loved her for fighting for what she believes and being headstrong but this also let her down numerous times as she blustered her way through things instead of thinking about them first. That being said this is completely typical teenage behaviour so it was also nice to see something so familiar.

I also really enjoyed the relationship between Raif and Rose. People sometimes assume that kids don’t understand things or aren’t mature enough to deal with certain situations. Their storyline really demonstrates just how smart kids are, and they shouldn’t have to deal with horrible things but they do because that’s just what has to happen.

My third shout-out for characters is Commander Sulemon who probably has the biggest character arc in the whole book. Loyal soldier to the Commune, his opinions start to change as he sees the impact their laws and edicts have on his own people from Nomarran. There’s also a tense love storyline for this character that contributes to this conflict.
I also appreciated that the overall cast of characters was big enough to keep things interesting but not so big that things got confusing. The right balance was definitely struck here.

Verdict: This is an excellent debut fantasy. It’s beautifully written, has a great cast of characters, and just enough detail to satisfy your questions and enough ambiguity to have you begging (literally via email – sorry Lucy!) for the next part of the story.

Thank you to the author Lucy A McLaren for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review.

What a debut! Awakening is a YA fantasy following our main character Evelyn, 18, who is on the run from The Commune, a group of people working under the Grand Magister (who in turn works for the King) who persecute people with powers. Evelyn takes in two children, Raif and Rose, and together the three of them seek to find sanctuary where they can live away from the government’s clutches.

The book is written in third person, with 4 alternating POVs (the fourth POV only being introduced later on). McLaren balances each POV very well. While Evelyn does get a lot more chapters, this makes complete sense in the context of the book and worked well to flesh out the story and progress the plot. The writing style was easy to get into, with the dialogue being especially well done. Personally, I thought Awakening reads more like an adult fantasy. The content is suitable for a young adult audiences, yes, but I felt the writing took on a more mature tone than usually seen in YA fantasies. This more mature voice worked perfectly to convey the dire nature of the characters’ situation and the bleak world they live in.

Speaking of the setting, the world-building was detailed without being too heavy; I found it easy to visualise the locations visited by our main characters. Initially, the history and lore of the world was somewhat difficult to understand, especially keeping track of the different groups of people. This didn’t take away from the main story too much however, as said past events were then repeated further on, allowing me to grasp the historical situation better. Though I found the pacing to be a little slow in places, this was an intense read, with high stakes throughout the whole book (stressful!).

The characters were great! McLaren took her time to develop each one, efficiently adding each layer to demonstrate their inner thoughts and motives. I especially liked Hector, he reminded me a lot of Lee Scoresby from His Dark Materials. His bond with his animal companion was beautifully written. I thought Evelyn’s character was especially well constructed, with her trauma and its effect on her character being approached very effectively.

Being my favourite trope, I of course loved the found family element to this story. McLaren did an amazing job showcasing Evelyn’s feelings towards Raif and Rose, as well as theirs towards her, showing how hard it is to build trust with other people after having been through such hellish times. Evelyn just wants to protect them but struggles with her own self-worth, while Raif just wants to protect his 6 year old younger sister. McLaren perfectly captures the wary and mistrustful nature of both these characters, before slowly and carefully detailing the breaking down of their walls to start letting the other in.

Overall, a fantastic read with a refreshing take on young adult fantasy! I am looking forward to the sequel, especially since the ending took a turn I was not expecting!

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD

I devoured this book in a few days because I just couldn't put it down!

This was such a refreshing and fun read despite the heavy subject matter at times. I couldn't ever predict what was going to happen next and found myself absolutely SHOOK at that ending.

The characters are all so real. From Evelyn, trying to take care of Raif and Rose while she deals with her own trauma to the Commander, a man manipulated into submission by the man he loves.

I was sobbing when he said "I have waited for a partner, not a master" 🥲

I WILL BE EAGERLY WAITING FOR BOOK 2 BECAUSE I NEED TO SEE THE GANG REUNITED AGAIN 🫠

oh. my. gosh. you guys know i’m always so nervous and apprehensive to review a debut book because i know how much good reviews mean to upcoming authors but MY GOSH this book was incredible? How is it not a must read fantasy? It should be so famous!!! thank you so much lucy for trusting me to read and review your book, it was such an incredible journey.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The writing had me captivated from the start. It had absolutely everything i LOVE about fantasy books; magic, secret camps, LGBTQ+, secret relationships, mischief, found family. The found family element in this book was the biggest part that made it a 5 star i think, the love Evelyn had for Rose & Raif had me so emotional, she treated them like her own siblings and i can’t DEAL with that cliffhanger. Luce if you kill off any of my favourite characters i shall cry my eyes out. i need the next book in my hands ready to read literally as soon as possible. I can’t explain how much i LOVED this book - if you’re a fantasy fan PLEASE give it a read! (plus you’re supporting a lovely & kind debut author so bonus). ⠀⠀

Wow! I really enjoyed this book. It was an ARC I was sent by the author and it did not disappoint. It
is a high fantasy story about a vicious lord, a corrupt king and a struggle for power between the commune and the people.

Evelyn is just trying to keep her head down in life
until one day the lives of two children Raif and Rose are thrust into her hands. Now Evelyn must do all she can to protect them from Commune who seek to capture children with powers to use for their own means! So they seek sanctuary with a group of rebels high up in the crystal mountains who promise they will help train the youngest of the trio control her unusually strong powers, but the leader of the group appears to have other ideas... If people with powers rise up they could potentially take down the commune and free the people from its tyranny!
Evelyn realises that nowhere is safe for Raif and Rose and that people will always abuse the trust of others in order to gain something for themselves.

Meanwhile Jonah is trying to help the commune restore the balance but he is finding it increasingly difficult to excuse the treatment of his people by Lord Torrant.
How far will his loyalty and devotion stretch when he finds out what Lord Torrant is really up to. Jonah finds himself questioning everything he has ever known.

Honestly this book had everything, found family, heartache and excellent character development. I loved most of the characters and especially liked the added extra of animal companions too. This book has all the right ingredients for an epic fantasy as it has a rather "magical quest" feel to it which I really enjoyed. The fact that the book is based around children with powers instantly causes you to connect to the characters and I believed Evelyns growing feelings for Raif and Rose as the story progressed. I also liked how we see Evelyn fighting with her own demons and the subtle back story thats included. All in all this was a great read. Very good considering it is setting up the story. The only thing I would have liked to have seen more of was more world building and detail of where they are and maybe a bit more humour between characters. But other than that this was a fab read. 👌

In this new debut fantasy novel, promising a series to follow, adaptable child protagonists deal with past hardships in a refreshing way. The conflict stems from a menacing society within the context of an intriguing fantasy world. Children play a key role in the world building of this novel at the center of which is a heartless cult bent on exploiting the inner potential of children. While this is far removed from our world, one gets the sense that if a few things were different, human beings could act and exploit one another in similar ways. It is probably a good thing that magical powers don't come into play in our everyday lives.

The writing provides a constant tension engendered by the characters being continuously on the run. The onset of foreboding powers marks the turning point in their lives, but their relationships grow out of necessity as they navigate the treacherous situation in which they find themselves. Overall, the narrative is rich in detail and textured like the classics of fantasy. Any fan of Tolkien will appreciate McLaren's solid grasp of design elements. The whole is tightly edited with quick-paced dialogue and description that does not overstay its welcome, often melding with the interior monolog. The author utilizes an immersive perspective and ample exposition to lay the groundwork of the conflict and atmosphere right off the bat. It is a dark young adult premise with a readable execution, and the author gives us plenty of room to explore her fascinating universe, which, over the course of the novel, begins to draw subtle parallels to the harrowing world in which we live.

I would have liked to see a little more humor or levity, but I think if that is not your main priority as a reader you should fare just fine with this somewhat bleak, but rewarding, read. Full of ominous juxtapositions of danger and palpable dread, it is a blending of familiar and foreign concepts, but it always retains a relatable pathos toward the main characters and their seemingly endless struggle through an unjust world.

First I would like to thank Lucy for sending me an arc of Awakening her debut fantasy novel!

A few key things I wanted to highlight:
•the found family trope
•story was well thought out, had nice world building, and good pacing
•a strong female lead and LGBTQ rep

And can we talk about the plot twist at the end! Overall great work, curious to see how the other two books play out.

One issue I did have was the alternating POV. This might not be an issue for others, really depends on your reading style. Personally, it makes it a bit challenging for me to connect with the characters, but I was still able to enjoy the story

What a great book!

Septima is a great world that McLaren has built, and I can't wait for book two. The ending has left me a buzz with questions of what is to come for our hero's (both likely and otherwise).

If you're a fan of animal companions, mystical powers and huge odds, then this book's for you.

Sometimes there are books that just find the way to your heart and soul, and Lucy's The Cruel God's Awakening, Book 1 of her Commune's Curse series, was that book for me. I love Lucy's way of weaving stories and emotions, creating a web of beautifully crafted characters, their life paths, and their innermost feelings. The Cruel God's Awakening is a prime example of her mastery.

The story pulls you in and never lets you go. It is dark and gloomy, set in a world where power and oppression rule hand in hand, where magic is seen as a blessing to some and a curse to others, and where fear is the driving force behind it all.

The Commune holds the threads of power, using and abusing those they deem unworthy. And those threads run deep, twisting lies into forced truths, spreading their propaganda, and reshaping the world and its values. Many characters succumb to the Commune's manipulation, giving their lives away without realizing who the true enemy is. And that was what I took from the story: it's hard to truly hate a villain when you know they were shaped into one by horrific circumstances. It doesn't absolve them of their crimes, but it makes you understand why they act the way they do. They keep trying to please the Commune at the expense of innocent lives, and while some will eventually see the light, others are too far gone to grasp the reality of it all.

The Cruel God's Awakening explores dark themes, and Lucy does it masterfully. Her characters are complex and multi-layered. They all make mistakes out of fear, hurt, or rage, but some of them take accountability and try to learn from them. They all need time, and time is rarely free.

Evelyn, Raif, Rose, and others keep trying to find their place in a world shaped by lies and mistrust. No one is safe from the Commune, not even its most loyal servants.

But, as Lucy shows us, the people you choose as your family will stand by you. They are far from perfect, but they will keep trying. The relationships shown in this story are beautiful in their intricacies, in the good and the bad, the mistakes, the love, and the care. They are raw and real, and only time will tell how it all comes to an end.

Thank you, Lucy, for having me as your ARC reader once again. It's a true honor.

(I'm not sure whether some things could be classed as spoilers here so I've marked it just in case!)

A huge thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this amazing book!

Firstly, the characters are amazing - I love Evelyn and her relationship with Raif and Rose. I think it's so sweet how they all went from not trusting each other to being so protective of one another. Rose and her powers was so interesting to learn about throughout the book. I loved the animal companions, I think it put such a unique spin on a fantasy world. I loved the multiple perspectives - I think it was a great way to understand all the characters seperately and learn about their secretive past. Commander Sulemon, who you'd typically dislike without his perspective, actually was quite a likeable character because of his love for Lord Torrant and how in the end he cared for Evelyn. I liked how he seems to be on his redemption arc and hopefully relieving himself from his toxic past. The pacing of the story was really good, and I was never bored while reading it! I think Hector and Cara and Rose and Dog are such adorable companions, they're definitely my favourite characters, followed by Evelyn, Raif and Rose! I had my suspicions about Avanna and Mak, and it seemed I was right...
The end made me so excited for the next book, so I will definitely be getting it when it's out!

Overall I really enjoyed this book, the writing was really good, and would definitely recommend it to fantasy lovers who like animal companions!

I probably come back sooner with a more detailed review, but for now, I am just putting down some thoughts on it.
This is a highly captivating read, it was really hard once you started reading to put it down, it was always "one page more, one paragraph more" and so on and so on. Because the writing, even if simple and not peculiar or poetical or else, is smooth and it's fascinating.
And the story is the selling point here, I think because even if it can seem straightforward, it's so full of twists and turns! The twists are pretty good here, and I appreciated them a lot.
And we have a lot of interesting characters and a lot of villains! It is hard to understand what is really going on, I mean, our main characters are a group of young people, Evelyn, Rose, and Raif, that are in dire need of help, because the Grand Magister is hunting them and that's simply way over their heads. But why the Grand Magister is hunting them and who can really help them and why it's another matter altogether. Sure, we get that the Grand Magister and the Commune (think of it like Inquisitors. They are just so bad!) are hunting all the people with powers, that's clear, but what really is happening, why is the Magister so relentless and so desperate, and what is happening to all the people that the Commune catch well... this is more complex, and it's not so clear (I am not saying that the book is confusing, but that it's constantly keeping you on your toes!).
And the villains are all villains. They are just so bad! And scary!

Synopsis:

“The multi-POV story is set in the Kingdom of Septima, where a ruthless cult rules in all but name, hunting down children born with ancient powers in an attempt to strengthen their hold over the kingdom. Evelyn, 18, finds herself on the run from soldiers of the Commune as she tries to protect two children, Raif and Rose. It soon becomes all too clear how much danger they are in when young Rose reveals incredible and deadly powers. Commander Jonah Sulemon doggedly pursues them under the orders of the man he loves, Commune agent Lord Torrant, and Evelyn is forced to accept the uncertain safety offered by a rebel group or risk capture—or worse—at the hands of the Commune.”

I love multiple POVs in books 🤌🏼 this is a young adult fantasy book that has the magic, the fearless MFC, and are you really living unless you join a revolution? Nope. I live for the drama so this was a fun and magical escape. I’m excited for book 2. 💕

As the title implies, this is the first book in a series. As with so many fantasy sagas, I find myself a little frustrated that I have to wait to find out what will happen next.

McLaren has sketched a varied cast of characters, and I was surprised at which one of them I felt that the title best applied to. I won't spoil it by saying which. Each character lifted a tip of the veil to uncover the rich world McLaren has created, and revealing their personal demons too.

YA fantasy fiction is not my usual genre of choice, however I’ve known the author for years and have bought and read the book in support of her. I don’t want my proximity to her to take away from that fact that I genuinely loved reading this debut novel.
Lucy’s command of scene setting, dialogue and representation created a storyline that was succinct, engaging and frankly, addictive.
The characters are so fully created that you can almost decipher how they might react to the situations they find themselves in and Lucy’s writing of strong emotions is masterful. I found myself moved on a number of occasions when the characters experienced rage, grief and longing. The complexity of their emotional experiences was as human as you or I, with deft references to mental health. Another aspect of this book I really enjoyed was the representation of LGBTQ+, as well as concepts such as found family.
The ending is the perfect set up for the continuation of the trilogy and I am now genuinely impatient to find out what happens next!

(Wasn’t sure if some of it counts as spoilers so I have marked it just in case!)

My third Indie read for the FSFA Bookclub! This sword-and-magic fantasy debut is an amazing achievement for self-published author Lucy A. McLaren. It is free of the hot chilly / cringeworthy romance that seems to be all to present on Bookstagram's and BookTok's YA Fantasy hype, and instead develops believable characters and addresses darker themes. The LTGB representation seems a natural part of the story.

Two things I noted—there is maybe a tad too much talking in the middle and I wish our female lead would swing that damn sword just once instead of only waving it around. And the book ends on a cliffhanger without any of the storylines coming to a resolution. (Now I have to read the second book!)

But all that only tells me that I actually cared which is what we are here for :).

Thank you to Lucy for sending me a proof copy in exchange for my review.

Awakening is Lucy’s debut fantasy novel and if this is anything to go by, we’re in for some fantastic follow-up books.

I love the general magic system Lucy has created. It’s somewhat familiar with elements of animal companionship and human control but it feels quite fresh at the same time.

This arc contains some fantastically written fight and chase scenes. With just the right amount of danger and suspense, they’re not too long and help push the story along quickly.

The book starts with a fairly confusing and overwhelming chapter but once we’re past that we’re treated to a suspense-filled one. This second chapter is a look into the past seeing how a specific evil was created. One that we know will appear again at some point in the book. It's a good setup and was described really nicely.

The book switches between three different perspectives and actually does it quite well. Each is unique yet seems to link together with small details.

There are a few predictable elements though. Characters keep secrets from each other even though telling those secrets would make relationships better. This in itself is a fine technique, but when we, as readers, know what the secrets are - and they don’t seem like a big deal - it makes the suspense not seem worth it.

There are some really good twists and turns though and the relationship building is done well. Lucy is especially skilled with dialogue, shifting the story forward with some really solid character interactions that are a joy to read.

Overall it's a great read and clearly the start of an exciting series.

4⭐️- A Fantastic Fast Paced Fantasy Debut and the first in a trilogy- I can’t wait for Book 2!

Thank you so much to the author, Lucy A McLaren , for sending me the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was my first physical arc as a reader/reviewer and what a corker!🥰

This was a dark fantasy filled with magic, mystery, found family and betrayal and I must say Lucy did an amazing job- it was hard to believe this was a debut-I can’t wait for Book 2 !🥰

I also absolutely LOVED Cara- i’m a massive cat lady so she was obviously up there as one of my fave characters! Also as a D&D player and having read the acknowledgments for this book and seeing that Evelyn was originally a character created by the author for her first D&D game made me smile.

The characters and the world in this book had so much depth and the multiple POVs as well as including letters at intervals really helped to bring the narrative to life and I’m excited to learn more about the world, all the players in the game and the magic of our characters. (There was also LGBTQI+ and Mental Health/past trauma representation 💙)

The chapters were a really nice length (on the short side) and the pacing was fast, but it never felt like things were being rushed or glazed over and meant that it was easy to keep reading ‘just one more chapter’.

(Please note that as this is a dark fantasy there are some content warnings and themes that may not be for everyone including mentions of previous sexual assault, torture, murder/death, slavery, toxic/unhealthy relationships, trauma and racism.)

My biggest surprise of this book is that it’s the author’s debut novel. It is so skillfully written and addictive and I cannot wait to read the next book.
Awakening is told from three perspectives but it works and comes together so well. We see things from the point of view of Evelyn, an abandoned child taken in by the local inn owner and forced to flee her home when they decide to shelter two children from being captured by commune soldiers. Some of the narrative is from Raif’s perspective, a young boy who rescued and protected by Evelyn and hides a dangerous secret about his siter Rose. Jonah Sulemon is the third narrator and it was his perspective I found the most intense. Sulemon works directly for the commander and is charged with hunting the children down. I found his character arc the most fascinating as he had a strong dichotomy happening he went through some big changes in mind and heart. Having the three different perspectives really ties all the different aspects of the story together.
The setting gives vibes of a story set in more historic times. Streets filled with cobbles, horseback used as transport, pies, ale and stunning scenery creates a very immersive world. I became completely immersed in this book and the vivid description really brought it all to life.
The plot moves quicky. The beginning of the book introduces the characters, situations and sets the scene for the series but in a way where there is never a dull moment and something is always happening. It’s intense at times and the last 25% had me glued to the pages. I let out a sound of annoyance when it ended and I know the next book isn’t due for a little while.
This is such a brilliant novel and I am eagerly anticipating the next installment. It has great characters, a despicable bad guy and fabulous world building. I cannot recommend this enough

Lucy has a nice writing style, but I had a few issues with this book.

I couldn't get 100% into the story. It was probably partly due to my preference - I don't like multi POV. Even the villain had his 5 minutes and a few chapters with his POV. I ended up not being able to root for any of the characters. I only managed to like Evelyn a little, while the rest was completely indifferent to me.

Jumping from character to character, we knew exactly what they were thinking and what secrets they were hiding. There were no surprises, uncertainty or suspicion, because everything was served on a plate. I need a little more mystery and suspense to enjoy the book.

Ultimately I decided not to rate this book as it still might be enjoyable for people who like multi POV.

Thank you so much, Lucy McLaren, for providing me with an ARC copy of your fantasy debut "Awakening". I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons. Imagine you are looking for a famous dish in a fine dining restaurant, but the recipe is an entirely new thing. You are excited about your new experience, yet you don't know what to expect.

This book was a pleasant surprise and the start of another amazing fantasy series. Everything here is beautiful: the plot, the world, the characters and the unique magic system. I loved the teasing of the main heroine's potential powers and can't wait to see what she is capable of in the future books!

Awakening is the first book in a debut YA epic fantasy series that follows an ensemble cast. In the Kingdom of Septimus, the Commune is charged with the protection of the kingdom from people who wield magic powers. In its corruption, the Commune hunts all children with any hint of power either to enlist, enslave, or eliminate. Evelyn is a young adult with a traumatic past who comes across fleeing siblings Raif and Rose and helps them seek safety with the rebels. In pursuit are Commune agents Lord Eirik Torrant and Commander Jonah Sulemon.

Although pegged as young adult, this book reads heavily adult with its mature themes, diverse cast, and general disposition. Even though it is told from four perspectives with two of them being young (18yo Evelyn and 14yo Raif), the maturity and darkness of what they go through made this a far more advanced and adult read. There’s violence, sexual assault, slavery, and murder running throughout this intense story, and the four perspectives really widen the scope of the events and its impact. The brisk pacing with its constantly shifting perspectives keep you reading, and the ever-progressing narrative keep you entertained.

I’d consider Evelyn to be the primary protagonist, but she is probably my least favorite of the four POV characters. Because of the trauma she went through and ran away from, she has become a drunkard and a very hesitant and untrusting person. It was a frustrating reading experience to see her make some bad decisions despite understanding where she is coming from.

I liked Raif—his love for his sister whose powers terrify him and his struggle with the things he witnessed made him a very easy person to root for. Hector, a founder of the rebel group, only appears towards the latter half but shows much promise with where the story is going. Both are good characters, but I know they have much more to offer.

By far my favorite POV character is Commander Jonah who provides the most dynamic and complex perspective. As part of the Commune, he has been blinded by propaganda and his past experiences with people with powers who destroyed his home. His secret relationship with his superior Lord Torrant adds a lot of tension while his foreign blood adds another level of hypocrisy.

Held up by a diverse cast and compelling storytelling, Awakening is a good series opener for an epic fantasy series that feels more adult than the YA it’s supposed to be.

*I was asked to be a judge in the first Indie Ink Awards, and this book was one of a few assigned to me. I received an ebook copy as part of that. My rating here may not directly reflect how I scored there.

In this breathtaking debut novel, we follow Raif and Rose—siblings who fled their village after it was attacked by The Commune. The Commune is the ruling system in the world of Septima, and their goal is to crush the inhabitants born with magic or powers.

Although this is a fantasy tale, it’s also filled with a lot of character development and relationships of all kinds, and it’s done in such a beautiful way. The author really gave the characters a lot of thought and care, providing each one with their own quirks and personalities, fears and challenges, arcs and redemptions.
I really enjoyed the differences between the siblings, and the relationships they form along their journey. Evelyn and Commander Sulemon, Avanna and Hector, they all have interesting backstories, and excellent qualities that contribute to their character development and arcs. I also really enjoyed the multiple POV in third person. Very well done and my absolute favourite way to read.

I really enjoyed the world-building as well, the entire world created. Again, the author does a fantastic job setting the scene and really maintaining consistency within the plot. The plot itself is something I haven’t seen done before, which was actually so refreshing in a fantasy series. Although I’m still a bit confused on some of the magic and how the powers work, I have no doubt that will be further explained as the series continues. I also really enjoyed the aspect of animal familiars—it’s always a treat to see that aspect done very well in a book. And this book is written extremely well, I truly am so impressed! T h e twists and turns it took, while staying true to the plot and overall theme.

I found myself unable to put the book down towards the end, and was rewarded with an epic cliffhanger ending. Although the book is heavily character-driven and plot-based, there are heavy themes of violence which are properly placed and relevant to the characters and plot—not just for shock value.

All in all, this was a fantastic debut novel and start to a trilogy that has huge potential! I was lucky enough to be given an arc and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to read and review-thank you Lucy!

This well-written fantasy novel by Lucy McLaren centers on the story of Evelyn, a teen-aged orphan, and Raif and Rose, two young siblings who end up in her care.

One of the things that made this multi-point-of-view book so interesting is the central role that two children play in the story. It’s unusual for young characters to have such complex backstories, and deep relationships and to be portrayed with layered emotions. In most of the fantasy books I’ve read, the children are background characters who are mentioned briefly. It was refreshing to see them have a lead role.

The pacing was a little slow in this book, especially toward the middle. What it lacked in action, it made up for in strong characters and appealing themes. I love books with strong female characters and sibling relationships, and this book has both. The strong-willed Evelyn was easy to connect with – I couldn’t help but root for her to overcome her inner battle with herself and gain more self-confidence. I also appreciated the found family theme and the bonds that develop between Evelyn, Raif, and Rose. Raif’s fierce sense of responsibility and his protectiveness over Rose made him an appealing character.

The book ends in a way that is both satisfying and leaves you wanting more, setting readers up perfectly for book 2 in the Commune’s Curse series.

Thank you to the author and publisher for providing me with a free e-ARC of the book. The opinions expressed in the story are my own.

Book Review time!

Title: Awakening
Author: Lucy A McLaren
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 (4.5 stars)
I was kindly sent an ARC of Awakening in exchange for a review.

First of all, I offer my apologies that it took me longer than anticipated to read this. Do not let that overwrite the fact that I loved this book!

This book is a wonderful debut, I found little to pick fault with.

It's a multi point of view story and once I was acquainted with who was who, I found myself invested in the story, and garnered an emotional connection to three of the characters.

There is drama from the very beginning and a great amount of world and lore building. You know who the bad guys are, you know what they're doing but not why. One of the characters points of view you follow is someone who is on the opposing side and it's interesting to read in comparison to following our two other main characters. There is great character development through the book, especially towards the end. Those you think are the enemy aren't, and those you think are friends aren't. There are some twists and turns in the last third of the book. And, be warned, it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Oh, and a special mention to the two wonderful furry sidekicks in the book!

All in all this was a great read, and I very much need book 2 in my life. I look forward to reading more from this author.
