An intriguing good versus evil story where a private investigator and the FBI team up to bring down an unscrupulous mob that preys on people’s financial misfortunes.
Private Detective Miles Darien is hired by Cora Sims to find her missing daughter Olivia, who has been living alone in Chicago.
Miles enlists his best friend, investigative journalist Ryan Duffy, to assist in the search. Mrs. Sims has no idea where her daughter works or how she makes a living. First, they must uncover the clues which will lead them to her workplace, hoping to connect with someone who can take them to Olivia.
When they find Olivia, she's barely alive as a result of an infection after having a kidney surgically removed. Turns out the kidney was payment for an illegal loan given by criminals who prey on people in dire financial trouble by forcing them to use their bodies as collateral.
I liked the story but the writing style wasn't what I usually look for in a thriller which made it hard for me to keep on reading from time to time. Otherwise great story
The book was just good. It examined the very true possibilities of all of the loansharking world. End what these people will do to make their money are. The characters were very relatable and very fun. The story was engaging. It was a good mystery. I didn’t give it five stars I guess because I felt there they were ways to improve the storyline, but it was a good read. It be worth taking a look 302 pages kind of a short read actually.
I will definitely read more of his books. This book was great throughout. Action all the way through. There are several stories at once but easy to follow. One is a woman who sold her kidney for money but the organization wants her dead. Another is a reporter who wants to write the expose on the black market of human organs. They all tie together.
This was a compelling story. It did seem far fetched in some areas especially when scenes involved the FBI. I am not sure the scenarios in the book were how the FBI would have actually reacted. I have never been involved with them, so who knows? Writing style is easy to read and the characters were well constructed. I will look for other books by this author.
Human Collateral had a slow but good start with introducing all the characters. I like how Miles dove into the case and willingly sacrificed himself to help catch the bad guys. The ending was great and worth the read!

Really great book I truly loved the plot. The story wasn’t so much of a slow burn that it drove me crazy but it wasn’t too fast either. There were some times I thought I had it figured out and was completely wrong lol that makes the book fun to me. I totally recommend if you’re into this genre!
