Just as love isn’t an emotion, it isn’t ruled by a stopwatch either.
My Review:
Nicola May has a keen sense of humor and I revel in her wicked clever wit and wry levity. The storylines were engaging and relatable and cast with a small village full of odd and quirky characters. The scene-stealer and real star of the show was, of course, the precious and precocious Hot, Rosa’s rescued dachshund who was cleverly dubbed Hot Dog as he was technically stolen from an abusive owner.
Rosa keeps messing up with her new marriage to the patient and perfect Josh. She keeps messing up because she is messed up, and then her extreme and self-destructive behaviors mess everything up, big time. Apparently, Rosa doesn’t do anything by halves. Yet she has a good heart and a commitment to self-improvement; it would be extremely difficult not to appreciate her as a whole despite her self-sabotage, runaway mouth, and serious issues with wine. Hmm, come to think of it, Rosa and I could be related…
Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone as there is backstory from the previous book, which I really appreciated as it had been some time since I read the first book.
It was so lovely to be back in Cockleberry Bay and to catch up with all the gossip and Characters. Oh and as always it was particularly good to see Hot Dog again, the loveable rescue pup who will melt your heart! It was also really good to see Josh and Rosa are still together, although things are not quiet so smooth sailing for the pair as they battle obstacles.
I don't want to give too much away just incase you haven't yet read the first book.
Once again Nicola May has written a Gem of a book! I have been eagerly awaiting this book! I didn't think this series could get any better after the first but I was wrong it's just as good if not better!
There is so much to this book, all the cleverly plotted stories, twists, connections, all weaved together seamlessly. The Characters are relatable, quirky, slightly flawed but endearing and likeable. There's Heartache, Romance, Battling Addiction, Self Discovery, Plenty of Drama, Secrets, Friendships, Humour, Plenty of adorable Fur Babies to lighten the mood.
Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay is an Endearing and Compelling Rom Com that's Warm, light hearted yet deals with some serious subjects, it's a read that once you pick it up you won't want to put it down!
Would I recommend reading this Gorgeous Book.... Without a Doubt.... 100% YES!!
I only hope that Nicola writes another book as I really don't want to say goodbye to Cockleberry Bay just yet!
Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Nicola May expertly weaves together threads of drama, emotion, and romance in this delightful story. I fell in love with Nicholas riding when I read “The Corner Shop in Cocklebery Bay”. This is the second book in this enchanting series, but it can without a doubt be read as a standalone. I thought Nicola did a really good job of refreshing our memories of the previous story. It was so nice to spend time with the characters of the previous book Rosa, Josh, Titch, and Hot in particular. It was also nice to revisit this charming small village and all of its quirky residence. I felt as though this book had a bit of a more serious tone to it, but I thought the issues were handled well. Having been married to an alcoholic it is a trigger for me. I have to admit I was disappointed in roses behavior in this book, but I do think addiction was handled realistically in the story.
Rosa and Josh are now married, but not as happily as you might think. Rosa is really struggling with the long-distance thing because Josh works in London and is not home every night. Roses insecurities and jealousy lead to her drinking excessively. Ugh this was hard to read about, I really liked Rosa, but she really did not handle this well... at all! Josh on the other hand I think handled things much better. I loved when he told her he couldn’t be with her until she liked herself... bravo! This was not the only thing going on in this book, we also get to read about Titch and her search for her baby daddy. Once again Hot(My favorite furry character) please an important part in the story and I love every minute we got to spend with him.🐾This was an engaging story that I without a doubt recommend!
*** many thanks to the author for my copy of this book ***
It was fabulous to be reunited with my favourite little sausage dog Hot, and his owner Rosa, new husband Josh, Titch the best friend, and all the residents of Cockleberry Bay.
It didn't take me long to feel quite at home again with all these characters and the little town. and there are enough hints as to what happened in book 1 that I believe it should be readable as a standalone. At any rate it helped me remember elements from the first book which I had recalled loving but couldn't think of the specifics well over a year later.
Wow there is a lot happening in this book, never a dull moment, but ultimately it is a journey of self discovery for Rosa, who really felt slightly out of control at the start of this book. I kept willing her to have some self realisation, and I loved the way it all resolved itself.
I actually can't believe how many threads of stories were weaved into this epic book. I loved every moment of it. There was high drama, emotion, laughs, secrets, romance, dogs and a whole lot more besides. It's just rather impressive writing,
I really felt as though I was alongside all the characters, they just felt so real, and I love how Rosa is a flawed main character. Always makes a nice change to have realistic characters to get to know and that this book has in abundance.
And the setting of Cockleberry Bay is lovely, I could really picture the town, and all its inhabitants.
A worthy sequel to The Corner Shop on Cocklebery Bay and I really hope this isn't the last we will see of the series.
Thanks you to Nicola May for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I wanted to give this series another chance but I was so annoyed by this second book.
I already had my doubts about the first of this series, but no. NO! NO!!!
The clichés are so in your face. Rosa had a difficult childhood so "of course" she drinks too much, she cannot keep a job, dives into bed with every man she sees, etc. etc. Eventually she finds the love of her life but this also becomes a big drama. The dialogues are too simple and the subjects fierce: rape, adultery, suicide, attempted murder, miscarriages, etc. However, this is super light adressed in the story and the characters don't seem to really experience it. It comes across as fake and even hurtful to those who have actually experienced this. It goes from very corny sweet life lessons and quotes that can be placed on a Hallmark card to super flat sexual comments and jokes. This is not a light-hearted feel-good novel. The cover suggests otherwise. You really expect a light-hearted feel-good summer novel, but a large part of this story strangely enough takes place around the Christmas period ... A writer like Jenny Colgan, Katie Ffjorde or a Sophie Kinsella knows this genre perfectly. I would have liked to see that here too. It feels as if the writer is still looking for her writhing style. All time low: Rosa receives a kind of undercover re-education of her environment with her husband as the remote leader. OMG REALLY? No this series is not for me unfortunately.

Rosa, the heroine of book one, 'The Cornershop in Cockleberry Bay', is now married to the lovely and handsome Josh. But their happiness is marred by too much time spent apart. Josh has his job in London while Rosa attends to her corner shop in a remote Devon village. This forced separation brings the worst out in Rosa. She soothes her insecurities and jealousy caused by her tragic childhood with heavy drinking. After a particularly devastating argument, Josh leaves her, promising only to return when Rosa likes herself a bit more. So starts Rosa's introspection.
Helped by her friends in Cockleberry Bay, all of whom are also battling their own demons, Rosa takes a good look at herself. But the book isn't all about Rosa and Josh. There's Rosa's best friend Titch, a single mother, who doesn't know who the baby's father is. Add to this Rosa's fortune-telling birth mother and her former lovers (there are two), plus various local characters with the backdrop of a seemingly sleepy English seaside village, and you have the ingredients for a good beach read. There are four-legged friends too in the form of Hot, the sausage dog, plus many other furry creatures who themselves have plotlines in this funny and sad story.
Although an easy and entertaining read, 'Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay' deals with serious issues. In real life, more happens in the wake of the happy-ever-after, but it's not a storyline often featured in fiction. Rosa's excessive drinking is also an interesting theme. Nicola May handles this, as well as the realization of our heroine's self-esteem issues very well. Mental wellbeing is such a taboo subject, it's refreshing to see it appear in a romantic comedy. For me, the pace of this sequel was slightly slower than the first book. I think this is due to the requirement to tell the backstory. If, however, you haven't recently read 'The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay', you'll appreciate the little reminders of the previous plot lines.
Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay by Nicola May is a good beach read if you want a light-hearted story with a serious reality check. I received a free advance copy of Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book that is set in Cockleberry Bay. Personally I would recommend reading the first book prior to this one to get the most enjoyment but the author does cover a lot of what went in the previous book in this one so readers won’t feel too lost.
It was so lovely to be back with the characters again and being a dog lover I especially love Hot the sausage dog. He is such a cutie and if possible, I adored him even more by the time I got to the end of this story. I’m so glad that Rosa has him in her life as well as the incredible good friends that she has made in the area.
It’s always great to be able to follow up with characters from a book so was good to see how things were going for Rosa now she is newly married and everything was very much on the up for her. Sadly things seem to have hit a rocky patch already and Rosa is in for a bumpy ride where she makes some discoveries about herself.
Meet Me in Cockleberry Bay is another delightful read in the series of which I can’t wait to read more! The characters are very much becoming like family to me and I so enjoy reading of the friendships in this small community that is set in a wonderful location that has me wanting to up and leave the city life. A heart-warming and engaging read.
-blz.173-
I really liked the first book of the Cockleberry Bay series. However, contrary to the rating of Goodreads, I found the second book much worse. I did not enjoy the second book "Meet me in Cockleberry Bay", probably because I did not find anything likeable in most of the characters. This fact possibly hinders my emotions during reading this book - I could not relax while reading it because I felt constant anger and agony towards the characters' actions and way of thinking. Luckily, the story was not too long and I finished it in a few days. I will probably not read the third and fourth book in the series.
Loved the first book but this was full of doom and gloom and lacked the feel good factor for me. Nicola May is a great writer, love her humour and descriptions of characters and their lives in Cockleberry Bay but i really didn't enjoy the constant amateur phsychology from all and sundry and the miserable storylines in this one. Much prefer the 'nice' books by the likes of Milly Johnson and Veronica Henry so here's hoping the next one might be a bit more cheerful?!
This is the 2nd book in the series and I am so annoyed with myself that I didn’t read the 1st one. There are some fabulous characters that I am meeting for the first time though it is their second appearance. I would say that you are better to read in order, though this second book did read well as a stand-alone.
Rosa runs a corner shop and specialises in all things pet-related. She is really struggling with her home life and coming to terms with her husband working away during the week. This adds a fraught tension to their relationship and gradually rosa starts to spiral out of control until she finds herself at rock bottom.
This is such a great read and one that I found was relatable. We all have things going on in our lives and the doubts and insecurities are a real threat. The author has very realistically and sympathetically captured this with her storyline and characters.
Rosa is not an “all doom and gloom” character and it is only in her times of solitude does she step on the slippery slope. She has around her some wonderful friends who are there to keep an eye out for her and to help her when she needs it.
Hitting rock bottom and getting some “tough love” treatment is something that Rosa needs, it sounds harsh but sometimes you have to see what you have lost before you realise what you had. The story goes through various emotions as Rosa starts to take a good look at what she has achieved in her life.
This is a story that I thoroughly enjoyed and it took me along the “things are not always as they appear” route. The balance between Rosa and her problems are levelled out with the other characters and things in their lives and the parts they play.
After reading this book, it has left me curious as to the previous book. There are tantalising little snippets and hints back to the first that has sparked my curiosity… ok nosiness!
This is a story of emotion, drama, romance and life in general.
This is book #2 in the Cockleberry Bay series. It can be read as a standalone book, but to understand the stories of some of the characters, I would recommend you read book #1 as well.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series and so was looking forward to returning back to Cockleberry Bay. I had to refresh myself with some of the characters as it had been a while since I had read it, but once I’d started this story they were all so memorable that it didn’t take long to settle back in to it. Rosa is back and still running the Corner Shop, along with her new husband Josh and her gorgeous little dog, Hot! Married life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be though with Josh working away and Rosa’s insecurities about their relationship. I do like Rosa’s character though and love how she isn’t afraid to say what she thinks! We do however, see a little bit more of a vulnerable side to Rosa in this book and this makes me love her character even more!
I have to admit I did find this book not as light-hearted as the previous book. There are a lot of tough issues in this book, such as alcohol dependency and mental health problems, but the author has written them so sensitively that you can’t help but be caught up in the emotional rollercoaster that this story is! It’s not all serious stuff though, there are some wonderfully funny and tender moments and who can’t help but love Hot the Dog, who as before stole the show! Most of the characters from the first book have returned for this instalment, some more likeable than others, and the story revolves around all of them. Cockleberry Bay is again described as such an attractive place that it just makes you want to book up and visit, and looking at the beautiful front cover of this book you can understand why!
Filled with lots of love, laughter and emotion, this was a great addition to this series. Hopefully we shall have many more visits to Cockleberry Bay in the not so distant future!
This is the second book in the series, but can be read as a standalone story. Cockleberry Bay is a small beach community with all the quirkiness that goes with it. Everyone in town knows everybody else's business, you run into people you might not want to see, and help is just around the corner whether you want it or not. I loved the dogs in the story, especially Hot Dog, the Dachshund. He was such a sweetie who was loving Rosa one minute and Queenie the next. He was a going concern and could make everyone laugh at his antics. The characters in this story are so real and genuine. They are flawed, but always try to do what is right. The story was well-plotted and paced. It had me reading quickly to find out what would happen next. This is not just a chick-lit romantic comedy there is a lot more to it than that. It deals with heartache, romance, alcoholism, forgiveness of self and others, jealousy, friendship, and self-esteem. Pair that up with drama, humour, lots of fur-babies, and special relationships and you have a wonderfully entertaining story with some twists and several connecting storylines that are all woven together seamlessly. I will say that there were a lot of emotions while I read this one, from laughing all the way to a few tears. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and have already purchased the first one, The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay, to find out what I missed. I received a copy of this book from Rachel's Random Resources upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
Since I read this straight after finishing the first book in the series, there was obviously something about it that I didn’t dislike. The truth is, these books are like marshmallows: insubstantial, easy to mainline but sweet to the point they leave you feeling ever so slightly sick. Main bugbears: the dialogue is AWFUL. Why don’t any of the characters ever use contractions? And the protagonist is, also, awful. She is described as “zany” at least once (always worrying) she is streetwise (but gets falling down, messy drunk on two glasses of wine) and seems to inspire an inordinate amount of love and devotion from the other characters in the book for no particular reason. Anyway. I can’t promise I won’t read book 3 because there is another Bank Holiday coming up in a couple of weeks and it might seem like a good idea, but I’ll probably regret it if I do.

Read June 2020 For me book one was better, but I did really like this one as well. It wasn’t as much of a feel-good as the first and I just prefer the tropes of the first book more (the mysterious element with the inheritance, friends to lovers, starting a new life) whereas this one focused more on problems in the relationship alongside some other more heavy topics. I loved being back with the characters though and seeing them grow. Also, the dogs are just too cute <3 Really excited for book three next month!
Rosa and her trusty canine companion, Hot, are back! And it was lovely to connect with them again along with the other inhabitants of Cockleberry Bay in this fabulous sequel.
And life should be smelling of roses as she celebrates life being married to the lovely Josh. But the reality of him working away a lot is hitting home and Rosa is finding things tough, and I really enjoyed how this author doesn't sugar coat life! She writes it warts and all - the good, the bad and the ugly!! It makes it so much easier to connect with characters who aren't perfect! They mess up, they make mistakes and it's how they deal with life after those bumps in the road that really make for an enjoyable read.
This book has that wonderful sense of humour that was so prevalant in the first book which makes you laugh out loud in certain cirumstances, but with this story the author manages to touch on slightly darker subjects that can affect us all which gives it a more realistic and grown up feel. With Rosa struggling it gives us the opportunity to see a character dealing with anxiety, addiction issues and jealousy, and how she deals with that and why, as humans, we all do silly things when we're not thinking straight and our minds run away with themselves!
The community of Cockleberry Bay have their own issues that we're introduced to and I loved the range of characters again - Jacob and Raff who run the local gastro pub face an uncertain future because of another pub having a refurb, and Titch dealing with being a new mum and dealing with the problems that causes, then there's something for everyone going on! There never seems to be a dull moment in Cockleberry Bay, that's for sure!!
"Chick Lit with a kick" is how I see this is described in the author's bio below, and my gosh isn't it! This was a book that I sat down to one evening and absolutely devoured, my eyes never able to move away from the page. There's the usual list of characters, although now we get to know some that little bit more (I had always been waiting to properly get to know Titch and find out about her backstory so was thrilled to get to it!!!).
I'll admit I didn't always get on with some of the characters in the book, but I did enjoy their journeys. The drama comes hard and fast as always (as always it kind of reminds me of a soap in literary form!) and with it we get an emotional journey but with tinges of humour too and a fantastic setting. A very enjoyable read and one that will be perfect for lazy days over the Summer. Thanks so much to Rachel's Random Resources for the book in return for an honest review.
Nonii, teine osa..
Aga nüüd lähen raamatukokku kolmanda osa järele, sest no ma tahan teada, millega kogu see lugu lõppeb.
