Four years after the mysterious, mass animal die-offs around the globe, billions die of famine, the ocean and waterways are polluted, insects destroy crops, plants overgrow, and looting, murder, and chaos unfold.
The most fortunate now live behind walls in one hundred of the largest cities in the former United States under totalitarian rule. To avoid the harsh and desolate existence beyond the city, residents follow the strict rules, but not everyone does.
Separated upon entry, Travis Young now works for the secret police while Emily Mansfield tries to keep her children safe working inside a vertical farm. However, with the seventeenth birthday of Anna around the corner, venturing out into the dead zone may be the only hope of survival.
But big brother is watching, and so are those who oppose the new order. When a mysterious group sets their sights on Travis and Emily as a means to bring down the system, they find themselves in a dangerous plot that will either be their salvation or damnation.

A fun page turner just like the first book, this story was overall enjoyable . The cons of this book fall along the same lines of the issues I had with the first book. You have this intense storyline with a massive extinction event, but I feel like that element is once again only on the fringe of the story. Also, some of the characters felt too much like a generic shell with some predictive storylines. Otherwise, still a quick, fun read. I will definitely read the next book just see if there is any further elaboration on the extinction storyline.
My God its so unfair making it a never ending story, now again it’s waiting time for the next who knows how many more ? But for real the author Jack Hunt is amazing, he created characters which feel so real that you truly feel each one of them like they where writing just for you ! And by using Miles Meili start to believe so. Absolutely Truly Amazing Creation !
I have read both 1 and 2. I am hooked. I am rushing to start Book 3. I love the books. A different look into what is an interesting take on end time events. I am entranced with the characters. Can't wait to see what happens in the Great Dying Off saga.
Most books of this genre I've read are clogged with so much unnecessary detail about weapons and such. Not so here. The proof is in the well written storyline. The believable characters and situations. Fantastic way to spend an afternoon.
Freedom was a thing of the past. One way or another you became indebted to those in charge. Those that tried to escape were caught and killed as the people looked on. Travis became a member of the secret police. Emily was brought to the chosen city because of her job specialty and she tries to escape, but saved by Travis. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat. I can’t wait to read the next book. Another good book Jack Hunt
I'm not accustomed to rating a Jack Hunt book any less than 4-stars, so it was a bit of a bummer to have broken that rule of thumb for this one. But as I tend to always say about any book series I read: a dud is allowed. And it seems I've found this trilogy's dud. I'm just hoping that this book be the ONLY dud of the three, though, as sometimes a series may have more than one. Still, it ain't like 3-stars is a bad rating. It still had the features I've come to love in a Jack Hunt book: compelling story, action, thrills, and character development. Thing is, it didn't have was ENOUGH of these things to satisfy me. The pacing felt off, sluggish at times, sporadic in others. Some things were abruptly ended too, leaving me deflated.
If there's one thing that I've gotten accustomed to expecting from a Jack Hunt book, it's mindless thrills, action, violence, (or some combination of the above) coupled with a great story that continues where it left off. Unfortunately, that doesn't really happen here. In this case, we've got a time jump of four years to contend with between this book and its predecessor. This isn't even a bad thing per se, but...it's a risky thing. Especially when the follow-up book has to compensate by spending significant amounts of time in expositional territory via its character narrations. It treads dangerously close to shortcut territory and at times, crosses into it completely.
It seems like the most plausible reason why this book had me feeling some type of way is because it's meant to be a filler, the "middleman" meant to bridge the first and the last of the entire series. At least, that's my hope, anyway. I'd imagine this was the price to pay to keep it as a trilogy since I'm sure adding another book or two would have eliminated the need for a time jump. Don't get me wrong. It's not like the missing four years left me confused. Things were perfectly explained to keep me up to speed. I just didn't like that this specific story felt a little uneventful in order to accommodate all the missing time. The aftermath of the mass animal deaths is harrowing and truly spooky, and I just wish I could have witnessed some more of it.
I still mostly enjoyed myself. It was still a quick read with great moments. And given how this thing ended, (which is not a sweet ending at all), the third book has a lot riding on it. We shall see how it all pans out. Fingers crossed for a home run.
1st Book was better…. Still gotta love Jack Hunt! …
I’m still … amazed, since Book 1, this is Jack Hunt writing. It’s great - but has just enough of a dissimilar nuance to it, to make it read a bit different to what I’m used to reading from Hunt. This second story was not as enjoyable to me as the first. But that’s just my particular preference in what I like in dystopian storylines - or worlds, however. The whole walled-in city, with outlying lands in whatever form, and religious order as leadership thing, just has never been my thing. With that said .. it IS a fantastic and sensible continuation of Book 1. It’s a Jack Hunt story - thus the world building, the character development, dialogue, … all of it — sublime! Once again, as in Book 1, this second tale in the series offered some intrigue; a fair bit of mystery. I laughed, I cried a bit, and I was angry a lot. I’m hoping now that, for the most part we are moving out of the walled city (NOT a spoiler, and not gonna be 100% by any means …), I will enjoy the story more going forward. Because I have to see where this all goes - ends! I do have to say. Jack Hunt is not an author to shy away from offering us swift justice to those who deserve it. Which is truly satisfying. Leaving no loose ends behind our favorite characters to turn around and bite them in the behind later. On to Book 3! …….
The book and the series are compulsively readable. I went through them quickly. It is a believable dystopia, not far from our present. However the vision of humans is disturbing but flat. They are either killers or prey, and those that are both are numb and compliant. Women can be brave but then they are sexless, or sexual but stupid. Lots of gun porn, detailing every aspect of weapons. Lots of heterosexual rape and sexual trafficking. No discussion of race even when the very occasional non-white person is introduced. It’s kind of for white straight guys into guns, whether they are actually white and guys or just think like them.
As the series continues, a religious totalitarian regime has taken over. They offer food and safety. The catch? No sex, no booze, no drugs, no fun. Follow the rules and life goes on, but don’t expect to be happy. Interesting novel which reminds us that if you trade freedom for security, you will find you have neither. Benjamin Franklin said that and it’s still true
I really enjoyed this story can't wait to read the book 3 It has you on the edge of your seat Jack Hunt really knows how to keep you wanting more of his books I have read quite a lot of his books , and just keep looking for more. Just read them and you will be hooked, a really great writer.
The best of the trilogy but that’s not saying much. Emily’s entire character is just wasted and Mr Young gets nowhere near enough character development.
Sleeping with Carla is just evil I don’t know why the author added that.
Anna is completely sidelined and doesn’t even have a real character.

This author never disappoints. What would happen to our country if all the animal life died? Read this great series and get a glimpse of a shocking future and heroes who fight for what is right.
No doubt we are living in a world where disaster seems to be our new neighbor. Mr. Hunt does a great job of introducing us to it. Look forward to seeing where the sequel takes me.
The first book then the second are non stop reads. The characters are as real as life. The idea of what could happen,is by no means science fiction. I can truly see this happening . Now on to the next step.
expect a rough ride, but some survive. you can Imagine the sorry types of people that come to hold the power in a world without birds or animals. it is a almost too much. great ending.
Four years after all the animals die we find our group in a lockdown city with puritanical rules. Separated Travis is in the order . Read how they live and survive in this place
Book one as well as this book very exciting. Characters that you're really rooting for and evil characters that you hope get done in. Also when you think about it, many metaphors for us today.
Well that was a surprise, A really good one. Going by the first two stories in this series,It's gonna be a great series. Very well done Mr Hunt, thank you very much.
Couldn't continue past prologue. Too much anti religion propaganda. As if it isn't too little faith causing so much social unrest rather than too much.
