Cameron Curtis has spent thirty years on trade floors as a trader and risk manager. He was on the trade floor when Saddam’s tanks rolled into Kuwait, when the air wars opened over Baghdad and Belgrade, and when the financial crisis swallowed the world. Having written fiction as a child, he is the author of the Breed action thriller series.
Once again we get a great action thriller from Cameron Curtis. Target Deck is the third book featuring Breed. This time he searches for his fathers friend after a fatal shooting and he is trying to figure out why. This book is told in two eras, one in southeast asia in the early seventies and the other in present time. Since I am historically interested in that period the book got me hooked immediately but the last quarter was in my opinion rushed and not so well written. The build up is fantastic and I love the works by Curtis. I look forward to the next one. I must thank @netgalley #NetGalley and @inkubatorbooks for making this book available to me and #CameronCurtis for writing #TargetDeck
This story hooked me early and kept my interest throughout. I did skim a bit over some of the details having to do with science, military equipment, and the like but the story itself was riveting. And, I am thankful I asked the publisher whether this book if reading the previous books in the series was necessary and their saying it was fine to read BECAUSE it was what I would consider a standalone story. That said, I am now rather curious about Breed’s previous books. I am also curious about what Breed will get up to next.
What I liked: * Breed: capable, lethal, interesting, attractive to women, good teammate, alpha, an enigma to me in many ways…perhaps because I did not read the previous two books? * Heth: an intriguing woman that may be too young for Breed – or not – but do hope she will show up in future books as she seems interesting. * Stein: CIA employee moving her way up, on the side of right, willing to do what it takes, I see her in future books, too, and wonder if she will pull Breed into a new mission or if he will find his own. * The story of The Black Sheep – interesting and intriguing – made me wonder if in fact groups such as these existed after the Vietnamese War ended for the USA…and imagine they did. * Thinking about how The Black Sheep that came home went on with their lives and how differently each of them turned out. * The twist that surprised me a bit near the end… * Who the “bad guys” were in this story and why they needed to be thwarted * That it seemed real and believable * How it played into the world we live in now with the threat of a variety of doomsday scenarios – and how to best avoid them. * Thinking about jumping from a plane – not something I would gladly do – but it is an intriguing thing to ponder. * All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * Exactly who and what I was meant not to… * Thinking about the “what ifs” of biological weapons * Knowing that, as in this book, there are people that will sell out for money
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
It was one of those that fluctuated from being believable and exciting to way beyond coincidences I will read the next and then decide to further follow the author.
This is book three of the Breed Thriller series and sees Breed approached by a CIA Deputy Director Anya Stein, who is looking to recruit him to the Company for an upcoming job, but without going into any further details. He declines and goes back to his remote home in Montana and the only contact number he can give her is for his old neighbour Sam Crockett and his granddaughter Heth. Crockett knew his father and worked alongside him during the Vietnam War. Breed wants to take some time off and relax, but finds the fact that Stein has two personal bodyguards with her to meet him in the middle of Washington, DC, somewhat strange. Something is clearly up and he will be finding that out sooner rather than later! It all goes back to 1974, when six former Green Berets were sent into China to assassinate a high level figure. The mission failed spectacularly and one of them didn’t make it home, whilst all the others were injured to varying degrees. They had to flee through a bat filled old mine and never heard anything about this failure for another fifty years. Their team name was the Black Sheep and the operation was called Operation Guillotine. Crockett and his old buddy Butler had gone deer hunting and failed to check in with Heth, leaving her to raise the alarm. Butler had been shot dead and Crockett was wounded, but missing. She asks Breed to help looking for her grandfather and it soon turns out that someone was deliberately targeting the former Green Beret team and looking to assassinate them and those in charge of the operation. What it is the Chinese are hoping to cover up is more monstrous than anything any of them can imagine, with a horrifying secret linked to the very bat caves the men used to escape the enemy all those years ago. Now the bats and their DNA are being used to create a deadly virus, with an extremely high death rate. Breed had only sought to find Crockett and save him from whoever was trying to kill him, but they soon get involved in trying to save the other members of his old team and find out a shocking truth from all those years ago. Breed and Stein are in charge of a new team, with Crockett and Stroud from the old team, as well as two seasoned men he has worked with before, all on a secret mission back to this hellhole, possibly all on a one way ticket to save the world. There are spies on both sides, so their arrival will be expected and nothing ever goes to plan on a military operation, no matter what you train for and this team hasn’t had long to prepare. If they can’t destroy the site, then they are all dead! There are a few surprising twists as the mission doesn’t go quite to plan and secrets from the intervening years are finally revealed to Breed. Not all of them are going to make it home form this one and most knew it was a suicide mission anyway. An interesting read with plenty of action and very realistic memories of the Vietnam War and its side effects on those who returned to a hostile country, and with spies and killers for hire. I look forward to reading some more of Breed’s adventures in the future, whatever period they may cover. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
My thanks to NetGalley and publisher Inkubator Books for the electronic copy.
This is Book #3 in the Breed series, and I have read the previous two and I think this is the best so far.
in 1974 Sam Crockett and his 2IC Will Butler lead a deniable ops team - the Black Sheep - mission to carry out an assassination just inside the Chinese border; everything goes wrong but most of them escape capture by making their way through a series of underground vaults and bat caves.
Now, Breed is spending some time in Montana - mostly unreachable - with Sam and Butler, talking about Breed's father's last mission with them in 1971. Sam's granddaughter Heth is there, where Sam has built up a hunting lodge business. One morning Butler is found dead and Sam is missing presumed injured but Breed's army brain kicks in and he's convinced Sam is on the run - this was no hunting accident - Butler was assassinated.
As Breed starts putting together pieces of this particular puzzle he meets up with Anja Stein again where he's surprised to find her surrounded by bodyguards. Something is going on and he's determined to find out what, especially when she tells him that Martin Fairchild, the CIA operative responsible for forming the Black Sheep has been murdered in DC by one of the team which didn't return in 1974.
Breed is drawn deeper into the mission's story as it becomes clear that someone is intent on cleaning house of everyone connected with it. The solution is probably a suicide mission, but one that Stein volunteers for as well - a mission to save the world - but they need Black Sheep's memories of their 1974 escape through those caves in order to carry it out.
This is a fast-paced action-thriller written through several time periods which culminates in edge-of-the-seat stuff and a final surprising twist.
I received an Arc via a bookset from "Booksprout" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This is book 3 in the series and continues where the last one left off. In this story Breed has gone back to Montana to his home was and visits with Crockett. Crockett has gone hunting with his friend Butler when he gets a call from Heth. Crockett's granddaughter. It seems that Crockett is missing and Butler has been shot. Upon arriving at the scene, Breed determines that Crockett has been wounded and has probably gone back to the lodge. It was only shortly after when Breed learned that members of Crockett's Black Sheep unit were being killed, that Heth and Breed went to warn the other members. They got to San Francisco and found one, but they were not able to keep him alive. They then went to try and save the other member where they met up with Crockett. Breed then contacted Stein who told him she wanted him to bring the 2 remaining members to an Air Force boss. Once there, she laid out a mission that she wanted them to do. All but Heth were read in, Heth remained.
To discover what the mission was and why the Black Sheep members were so important, then you need to read this book. It will certainly keep your interest.
This is the third in the Breed series and it's another rip-roaring read. This time Breed is searching for his father's old friend, Sam Crockett, who has gone missing after being shot at. At the same time, his hunting buddy was killed. It turns out someone is killing the members of the Black Sheep team who were in Vietnam in 1974.
It ends up with returning to the jungle on a mission operated by Stein, the CIA operative who has worked with Breed in the previous books.
I loved this yet again. Non-stop action and violence yet with enough story to keep you wanting to read more. It's descriptive with no padding throughout and a few twists in there to keep things interesting. Looking forward to reading more of this series.

I loved this book packed with action. Cameron Curtis delivers a very well written story about a fierce group of men, who fear nothing and are willing to do everything to defend their country and ultimately the destination of Mankind.
When in the 70's a group of green berets during a special mission found a secret cave in China they became targets. Now, with the help of Breed, the son of one of the men of the Special Force, they have to survive the multiple attacks of a hit-man and also have to help the CIA to eradicate what lies in the cave. With no time to waste, we embark on a journey full of speed.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I would definitely recommend it to other readers. I will most definitely be reading more of Cameron’s work in the future, especially the Breed Series.

Total Precision! What a nasty way to be reminded of your military years, not just praise for your great service to your country. You can be targeted later for something you did years ago, even if you were told to do this by your superior. This is a story that makes me feel so much sadness of what our military men and women have had to endure while in service to our country. They do things that ordinarily would be against the law. They also live with that in their heads for the rest of their life! Sometimes a person is a bad guy while looking like a good guy. Thank you, Cameron Curtis, for a great story! I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest review.
Fabulous! So full of action and intrigue, I couldn't put it down. This is the first Breed book I've read, but I liked him right away and found myself invested in his success. There are many other great characters in the book too--Crockett, Heth, and Stein, just to name a few. I loved the contrast of the setting at the hunting lodge with Peterson Air Force Base and the jungle. A well written tale with exceptional action scenes. Even though this is the third Breed book, I wasn't lost at all and you can bet I'll be going back and reading the first two now!
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Story goes back and forth between the Vietnam war and present day. The depiction of the conditions in Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia seem accurate however how does a supposedly "good guy hero" become the bad guy. How is there time during a fire fight to have a "discussion"- seems implausible. Loss of characters in the book is long-not too many left standing towards the end.
One of the characters Heth is just pushed aside midway through the book.
An action packed, thrilling read that grabs your attention and keeps you turning the pages. Characters that are well developed making them easy to get to know. Warning, once you start reading you'll find it hard to stop.

A great read. This was the third book I have read in this series. I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of them. The action is non stop and there are quite a few twists and turns. A big thank you to the author Cameron Curtis and I am really looking forward to, and crossing my fingers, for a fourth book. A well deserved 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This novel has a very interesting and intriguing premise, which requires Breed and some of his father's cohorts from their Vietnam days to mount a desperate mission to stop the Chinese from letting a doomsday virus loose in the world. This is not a post-apocalyptic novel, it is a better read than most of those.
This series is just improving book by book!!! In this third book, Breed is joining once again an operational team as reengaging with the Army to deal with a situation involving China. I also like Stein character and she is playing also an active role in this one. Breed's father is dead but in this book. some of their brothers in arms are introduced with a 'nam flashback, which is also amazing.
A sharp to the point story that takes one back to the operators of Vietnam, SOG and their knowledge. Put them together with modern day Rangers on one last mission to neutralize a Chinese bio weapons Lab & you have one hell of mission. Enjoyable & entertaining.
Another solid book by Cameron Curtis. If you like action and adventure this one's a winner. Exotic locations and good character development. I really appreciate the research that went into this book because there's plenty of technical info but it doesn't bog down the story.
There’s a lot packed in this book and the author weaves all of it skillfully. Yes there are some far-fetched characters doing far-fetched things, but it’s an action thriller so…
The Chinese have developed a diabolical biological weapon on the chino Vietnamese border, Breed ,Stein and a bunch of ex Vietnam War vets must find and destroy it before the world is decimated.
This is an excellent series. The developing relationships are well thought out and the central plots on point. Given the global pandemic of the last couple of years, this story in particular resonates with our world.
I like this series very much.😃 Not a very in depth character development but great action and complex plot development. The trip back to a previous horrific war and its heroes combined with current events was a new twist in this genre.
Ok, quite good. Not sure I like the small stories interspersed between the lines of the main one. Just tell it in real time and not flipping backwards and forwards
Even though not excessive would prefer less profanity. Cameron Curtis writes good books and i have read all the Breed novels. Well written and informative without becoming Tom Clancy type detail. Now I have to wait for the next Breed novel.
Ugh, once again fast paced crazy story, the farther you read the faster you read just to see what happens next. Great story, great action, and surprises throughout. Thanks for a great read Cameron Curtis. Can't wait to start book 4.
More than a little rushed at the end than I like to see, but a good story with a different terrorist line than usual. Detailed in the usual comments about the weapons used and of particular the SADM. One wonders what the modernized version looks like today?
Read all the books in series and enjoyed all. Talented author who tells great story. Lots of action and some twists. Give this author a try. You won't regret it.
