Blood is thicker than water! Every grimy hustler will express those words when they are out on the block chasing the bag. But when Flash’s back is up against the wall and he’s being pressured by homicide detectives, all sense of loyalty goes out the window.
Flash, the son of Philadelphia drug queen pin Vickie Lopez, decides he isn't going to prison, not even for his own mother. When he’s arrested for a small amount of cocaine, he spills his guts to Philadelphia homicide detectives, resulting in the arrest and federal conviction, under the RICO Act, of his own mother. She’s staring down a life sentence.
As the clock winds down on the deal he cut with the Feds, Flash is shipped to Graterford, one of the harshest prisons in the state of Pennsylvania. His baby brother, who is North Philly’s most notorious contract killer, awaits him for a family reunion.
With nowhere to run, Flash is forced to lay in the bed he made for himself. His past has finally come back to haunt him. Will his brother make him pay the ultimate price for betraying their mother, or will he forgive him for his sin?
It wasn't horrible but if a person who had been to jail read this it would be very triggering. A lot of racist undertones.
Rashad just moved different. Like the synopsis implied one thing but the storyline didn't match up. Then the ending had me completely lile wtf??? I'm not an author nor do i aspire to be but I feel like there were so many different ways this book could have turned out. There was not a single character that i loved in this book smh. It wasn't horrible. Just coulda been better based on other titles I've read under this series
Treasure Hernandez is usually a good go to for urban fiction. This one was a lot. Forget any characters being fleshed out. There are a lot of plot lines that weren't followed up on and (TW) SA was used as a plot device many, many times. We start off the book with one. It was overdone. Don't get me started on the misconceptions of homosexuality. The blurb made it seem like Rashad's mom Vicky was going to play a bigger part in the book than she did. His younger brother Flash didn't have too much to say either (considering it was about him essentially turning their mom in). I don't know. It seemed thrown together. The ending was interesting. After all that we should feel a way about Rashad getting some sort of comeuppance. Butttt... It wasn't satisfying. 2.5 stars
my first time ever reading a book from Carl Weber's Kingpin Collection, and my first time I've ever read an urban novel.
(this book was a rideeeeeee)
2/5 checked out from local library
the book and it's characters are just...ignorant to say the least. But that's what makes it entertaining. In my head I'm like, 'lets see how these idiots roll through life'.
And I'm not completely sure if the main character is black, even though he does use the N-word a lot.
And the summary- the summary is NO reflection on what's actually going on. Flash is BARELY mentioned in the entire story. The main character is Rashad, his brother. I feel like they should've focused on him since the entire story (for the most part) is told through his perspective.
The part two of the book probably was the best to be honest. I really like how well it was written when you compare it to part one.
For most of my young life as a black women born in the projects, I can say that some people though, actually think/move like Rashad. The beginning, when his grandfather got killed, is a perfect example of how it all starts. That endless cycle of revenge that a lot of black men want so badly for experiencing something similar to what Rashad experienced.
(Though a lot of this book is extreme. Rashad is a rapist & a murderer. As I know some people have experienced rape, and have a family member or a friend who's been murdered, the way things were set up in this book was just kind of unrealistic. But it's fiction so I guess it's fine.)
If you look at this book differently, it's an okay representation of society, and a bit of what a lot of minority communities struggle with. Twisted correctional officers, racism, misogyny, internalized homophobia, gang violence etc.
This book, as I said earlier, was wild. While I was browsing for other books in the Urban section, a lot of them sounded as crazy as this one. So if I do go into more Urban novels, should I expect the same level of crazy or even worse lol. I would read this if you are ready to turn your mind off and just read no matter what's going on.

Snitches get gone. This book was good and dealt with rape, drugs, murder, hatred, gangs and more murder. Vickie 'capita' Lopez was raped repeatedly by her stepfather, a minister. Her mother ignored this injustice and when she was seven months pregnant put her out of the house on the street. Rashad was born and became apart of the Pop Rulers. He disliked snitchers. The book dealt with prison life. Rashad had no regard for killing anyone. His brother snitched on his mom and his mission in life was to kill his brother. Loyal lover, Fatima stuck by his side. Mustafa befriended him and childhood friend, Miguelito was with him, then KARMA. I wanted Blondee to get his. I enjoyed book.
Let's Start With Saying This Was A GREAT READ.....PERIOD🔥🔥🔥 Vicky "Last Pata" Lopez Was A Straight BEAST, She Did What She Had To Do Hers. Rashad Was A Mastermind About His Next Move(s) When It Came Down To It, And Last But Can't Forget About That Faggot Ass N**** FLASH🤦🏾♀🤷🏾♀
I enjoyed this book! A true page turner. Rashad and his crew got the streets of the Bronx in NY on lock. They have proven themselves to be true killers. Rashad's mom gets set up and arrested. Come to find out, his brother Flash snitched on her to get his time cut down. Rashad goes through the prison system to seek revenge on him. Read the book to see what he goes through to get to his brother.
'SUMTHIN' DIFFERENT' INCLUDING THE LOCATION (SUCH AS IT WAS)& I WAS ALL-THE-WAY HERE FOR IT ALL! THANK YOU MS. HERNANDEZ! PLEASE RETURN BACK TO THE FAMILY BUSINESS SERIES! WE & ESPECIALLY VEGAS, PARIS, ORLANDO, RIO DUNCAN MISS & NEED YOU TO RESUME THEIR STORYLINES, BRINGING READERS BACK TO WHAT WE KNEW OF THESE CHARACTERS!
I strongly disliked this book. I mean….an aggressive trigger warning would have been appropriate. I read urban and hood lit all the time. This was crazy. Every other scene was a rape or murder scene. The story was chaotic. The whole premise of revenge ended in a very anti climacteric way. I was annoyed throughout the entire book and found no redeeming character
This book…. Oh my gosh the events that take place throughout the Bronx is crazy! This book really makes you feel like you are actually standing beside the characters with every action packed chapter. Great read I read it in one day!!!
It wasn’t the “best book I’ve ever read” but it’s a real good book. Right now in life I’m going through learning to let go and heal from past things and this book was a great look at what can happen when you don’t allow yourself to let go and heal!
This was not a horrible book. It just was not awesome. It was a good story line just nothing spectacular. Rashad most definitely is the main character, besides his mother and brother no other characters had a real significance purpose. It was not enough action for me but not completely boring.
I feel like the 3 star rating was appropriate. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. For the bad ass Rashad put himself out there to be I was definitely surprised at the end. I feel that's what saved the book for me. Alot of sex and violence in this book.
While it was good it wasn’t great in my opinion. I felt like the book wasn’t what the synopsis made it out to be. The book wasn’t about Flash but Rashad his brother. There were also times I was confused about the events happening because of the back and forth between events.
