"At that moment I hear the voice again,
A string of words,
The most beautiful that I have ever heard,
The words don't give up."
Don't Give Up, Dania Khan

The beauty and 'curse' of poetry is that some can't be downed like that sweet wine you. Poetry wants you to slow down so that it's message can sip in, slow down so yu can go high on words, slow down so you can feel the magic, see the art... Labyrinth is such an anthology of poems; I had to take my sweet time to get into the feels in between the lines, see the world is a different perspective as the persona weaved her words and emotions.
Was it a bit scary? Yes, because we sometimes feel darkness is evil, bad and needs to be buried. But in order to cleanse it you must go in deep through the shadows and find the light. Truly a whirlwind of emotions, I got lost but in the end found my way through the poems.
I loved the illustrations and the short prose along with her unique and lyrical way to express herself. Their is truly beauty in darkness.
Read:
"She strolled through the land of emotions,
Cold, like her words.
Fires scorched her like her jealousy.
Searing mists of anger poked her..."
Her words, lines, verses go in deep and dark, raw and wide into the Labyrinth of emotions most of us want to bury or hide.
Like the yin and yang the themes from her poems are a spectrum of pain, loss, guilt, anxiety, depression, suicide, loneliness, death, hope, faith, redemption, love, wishes, desires.
Everything, Don't Give Up , fear, Light and Dark, Looking For Someone to Love, Perfect, Remember, The Song of Life, Wish, Strings...are some of my fave poems Khan has penned.
I can't wait to see what more will spew from her imagination, feels, experiences, observation.
"...I don't think I have darkness inside of me, I feel that sometimes overwhelming feelings become dark, whether it's too much joy or too much sadness, when inside someone for a long time, they find a way into your heart and become a little dark.
I wasn't writing this book for one person, but for every kid in the entire world."
