An edge-of-your seat murder mystery set in a forgotten, ocean-facing town on Vancouver Island!

A body washes up on the shores of Lake Templeton, a small town on the coast of Vancouver Island. Sharon Reese, the victim, was a dedicated government employee. Everyone liked her, but no one knew much about her. Was she hiding something? Maybe a questionable past riddled with scandal. And did it lead to her plunge to death, in a drunken stupor, off the dock outside her secluded lakefront lodge?

Was it an accident? A suicide? Or cold-blooded murder? Private Investigator, Fati Rizvi, is determined to find out.

Fati arrives in Lake Templeton to find secrets that run as deep as the City’s sewers. Everyone is hiding something and nothing is as it seems. A cult escapee. A corrupt politician. A struggling airline. A multi-million dollar public-private project to revitalize the Lake Templeton waterfront. How are they all connected?

As Fati valiantly unravels the knots, another body is found on the shore. Is it the same killer? And can Fati stop them before they strike again?

The Lake Templeton Murders is the debut novel from HS Burney. After the body of Lake Templeton’s treasurer, Sharon, washes up on the shore of a lake, Private Investigator Fati Rizvi is drawn into the case. While on the case, she uncovers embezzlement, blackmail and infidelity.

Obviously, this sounds great to read. The result was somewhat disappointing. I enjoyed the plot and Fati’s Character but the book felt like it dragged a lot and I found myself losing interest at times. This story sometimes felt super long.

I loved the tone and writing of this book though. The storyline was well written. The characters are diverse and interesting. It was fun to follow along with these characters. The novel, although having good points, fell flat at times. It was still a great read with an interesting plot.

All in all, while I didn’t find this book to be groundbreaking or anything, it’s a great book that I would recommend if you love murder mysteries.

a great murder mystery!

I am very glad I read this book! If you love murder mystery novels, definitely check this one out. HS Burney had me asking all the questions along the way, anticipating how the answers would unfold.

Great plot and strong characters; I really liked the protagonist, Fatzi. She was smart, strong willed, and easy to connect with. I also really liked Zed’s character.

The only thing I wasn’t a fan of were the unnecessary details included in some scenes. For example, there were moments we got a play by play of unimportant things like her pulling up to a place, getting out of the car, and then walking into wherever she arrived. Moments like this made some chapters feel really long.

Other than that, this was a really good book that legitimately kept me intrigued. I was invested in the storyline and needed to know how it would all wrap up.

This was my first book by HS Burney and it turned out to be a great murder mystery read. I liked that it had me at the edge of my seat and had me guessing a few times. The characters are all strong and well developed but Fati was my favorite! But I liked Zed as well. Their characters do a great job complementing each other. Overall a classic whodunit that was interesting and easy to read!

Thank you Zooloo Book Tours and HS Burney for sharing this book with me!

I enjoyed this book very much, it's right my alley and who doesn't like a good murder mystery. This book is full of details and keeps you on the edge of your seat very early on in the book and keeps you there till the end. I also loved that it has a Canadian setting. The only thing that I wasn't a fan of was the VERY long chapters but that's just me. Other than that it was awesome and I'm very grateful the author gave me a chance to read and review this book. If you like a small-town murder mystery this one for you.

If there’s one thing that I like doing, it’s discovering new authors. H. S. Burney is certainly a new author for me. I read the synopsis for ‘The Lake Templeton Murders’ and it certainly sounded like my kind of read. So without further ado, I grabbed a cup of tea, grabbed my Kindle and settled down for what proved to be an interesting afternoon of reading. Overall I did enjoy reading ‘The Lake Templeton Murders’ but more about that in a bit.
I must admit that it took me a little while to get into this book, which has more to do with the fact that I was tired and finding it hard to concentrate when I read the book and cannot be taken as a criticism of the book itself. Once I got used to the author’s writing style, the characters and the storyline then that was it and I was away as the saying goes. I found it rather difficult to put this book for any length of time. I was intrigued by the murder and by the characters. I developed my own theory as to what was going to happen so I had to keep reading to see if I was on the right track or if I had wandered down the wrong path. The more of the book that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. I became so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the different characters that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the story. All too quickly I reached the end of the story and I had to say goodbye to the characters. I found ‘The Lake Templeton Murders’ to be a gripping and tense read, which kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat.
‘The Lake Templeton Murders’ is very well written. The author certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be a compelling story. For me, the story ht the ground running and maintained a fairly fast pace throughout. The story is written in a casual style which makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at heart of the action. That’s how I felt anyway. Reading ‘The Lake Templeton Murders’ felt like being on an unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way.
In short, I really enjoyed reading ‘The Lake Templeton Murders’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more from this author in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.

*I received a free copy of this book with thanks to the author and Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources blog tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

Yet another great PI/police procedural novel to share with you today – I seem to be having a really good run of them, long may it last!

What particularly stood out in this book was the main character, private investigator Fati Rizvi. Fati’s character brilliantly bucks any PI genre stereotypes and is eminently relatable. She is cool and logical, but also impulsive and thrives on danger and pressure, and avoids the softer feelings in order to keep her laser-sharp focus on the case at hand.

The plot is easy to follow, despite packing a lot in: murder, blackmail, embezzlement, drugs. The ‘closed off community’ set-up keeps the suspect pool relatively small and yet leaves plenty of scope for different personalities and potential motives, so I was kept guessing right up to the reveal.

There is also some romantic side-plot build up as the main storyline progresses and I really enjoyed the unique way in which the author chose to develop this aspect. In fact, all of the relationships introduced rang true to life for me – I felt like I was eavesdropping on Fati’s investigation, rather than reading about it!

Overall, this is a neat, well-constructed PI mystery novel, but it was the characters and their development that really hooked me in and left me wanting more. I can’t wait for the next one!

Review by Steph Warren of Bookshine and Readbows blog

‘I lean forward. “Look, Sergeant, I know you’re short staffed,” I state. “A murder investigation takes a lot of resources. Vancouver Island isn’t exactly murder capital.”

“You’re overreaching – we don’t know what happened yet,” Sergeant Keller says, “We have to wait for the coroner’s report. But right now, it looks like an accident – or suicide.”

“It could be,” I concede. “It could also be cold-blooded murder. Come on, Sergeant. You know you can trust me to be discreet. Just let me ask around a little, see what I can uncover. It can’t hurt. I promise I won’t make you look bad.”

The Sergeant gives in. “Fine – go over there. Let me know what you find. They’re not big fans of the police at Lake Templeton anyway. Bit of a closed off community.”

“I like a challenge,” I say with a smile.'

Than for providing me with an ARC to review.

Fati is an ex-cop who now works as a Private Investigator. Her family
isn’t overly impressed with her lifestyle choices but Fati is ok with that
as she is following her passion. The body of Sharon Reese washes up on
the on Vancouver Island and Fati decides to head out and investigate
the case as she knows the detective in charge and she has some free
time on her hands. It turns out the victim was in a cult as a child and
is suspected of embezzling thousands of dollars from a revitalization
project under way. However when Fati investigates the victim she
is unable to find any trail for the money. Sharon’s lifestyle is humble and
not extravagant and there isn’t any excess money sitting in her
bank accounts.

I really enjoyed this book with its many layers and different stories that were taking place simultaneously. I think this book would have been complicated to follow if it had been written in multiple POV because there were so many subplots in this one. I was curious as I read this and had more questions. The questions that I had were answered clearly by the end. The book has left me wanting more. If this is a series I am ready for the next one.

I loved the Vancouver and Vancouver Island setting picked for this book. I loved that they talked about taking the ferry back to the mainland or the small flights.

Let’s support our independent authors, this was well done and an excellent debut novel. I rate this book 8.5/10 and highly recommend it.

The Lake Templeton Murders is my first experience in reading the talents of H S Burney. I found this book to be a good murder mystery of who done it. I loved the strong female lead investigator Fati who begins to solve as to what happened to the victim, whose body washed ashore in Lake Templeton on Vancouver Island in Canada. She has her work cut out for her when more bodies are found. I thought this was a suspense filled tale that kept me intrigued and not able to easily predictable what was going to happen next. There were a few twists and turns that I would have never expected. There were a few scenes that slowed the pace down a little bit but quickly picked back up again. Even though this is a mystery that needs to be solved, there were a few light hearted moments that I could not help to have a giggle or two. It was a fun and entertaining book to read.

I am giving The Lake Templeton Murders four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading a good cozy mystery. I would love to read more by H S Burney in the future to see what else they have in store for their readers. I am hoping there will be books to be released that features Fati in the future, as well.

I received a digital copy of The Lake Templeton Murders from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

What begins as the suspicious drowning death of a local civil servant in the small community of Lake Templeton, turns into a complex whodunnit murder mystery drawing the attention of private investigator, Fati Rizvi. The town mayor and her sidekick claim that Sharon was embezzling funds from the city but the more Fati looks into Sharon’s last moments, the more she suspects hidden agendas and foul play.

My initial reactions to Rizvi’s pushy, aggressive and often illegal efforts to obtain information pertinent to this case were not great. I also struggled with Fati’s first person commentary laced with so many similes the book took on a drinking game quality. Some of the actions by our protagonist seemed unlikely but I found myself pulled into the story. I liked Fati’s need to get the facts and enjoyed when her stoner buddy Zed was needed for undercover work. Her interactions with a detective assigned to the case adds legal believability along with some self effacing humourous moments I enjoyed.

An author to watch and a PI to add to my see what she will investigate next list.

Fati is an ex copper now private investigator, who steps up to help when a body is found washed ashore. No one knows whether it was murder, suicide or a tragic accident.
As Fati starts to investigate she uncovers secret after secret, it seems everyone in the small community is hiding something.
This was a great and engaging read. Fati is a relatable character, fierce, take no nonsense. I felt she was maybe too blunt at times and I'm not sure people would have responded as kindly as they did. There are times I would have said who the F do you think you are, maybe that's just me lol.
There are a bunch of strong female characters, all trying to portray success and contentment despite varying backgrounds. I liked this aspect of it.
There are a lot of plot threads, but not overwhelmingly so.
This is quite a long book and some description could have been lost sithout affecting the story.
Thats the only thing that really loses it a star, the remote island setting is atmospheric and ideal, the story is brilliant and well told and I really enjoyed the read and will certainly pick up future books by this author.

The Lake Templeton Murders by HS Burney is an excellent murder mystery that had me guessing til the end. HS Burney spins quite a web of mystery and even when I thought I knew, I second guessed because the mystery was very well written!

The plot was excellent. There were a few scenes that dragged a little because of extra detail, but overall, the story was fast-paced and well written. I enjoyed the writing and as I said earlier, the twists and turns.

Fatzi is an great main character. She was east to connect with because while she was quick witted and smart, she was also real, and made real decisions. Great characters make books great, and this is where The Lake Templeton Murders really shined.

Overall, this was entertaining, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to read it. Check it out!

Book Sirens eARC. Despite opposition from her Muslim family, Fati joins the Vancouver police force and later becomes a P.I. When the treasurer of Lake Templeton washes up on the lake shore she joins the local force's inquiry as a consultant. She discovers that Sharon was a quiet woman with a past and that mischief is afoot in the small town. She uncovers money fraud, drugs as well as blackmail and infidelity, giving many a motive. Despite too many suspects Fati perseveres in her search for the truth. I enjoy sidekicks and Zed was an engaging one, balancing Fati's intense methodical methods. Fati was a diverse main character and the storyline was well crafted and plausible. The plotting was smooth with some unexpected tangents and red herrings. I enjoyed this crime thriller and would read this new to me author again.

For mystery lovers that like their stories very complex, this one will be a great book to add to your TBR list.

The MC was an interesting character although sometimes the way she spoke or the items she focused on didn't seem to match with her character's experience.

The book was also very long and probably could have been made better by some additional editing.

The author definitely takes the reader through a lot in this mystery so you will not be bored!

Thank you to @rachelsrandomresources for having me on this Book Tour. All opinions expressed are my own.

I enjoyed this novel for several reasons. It’s set in the Vancouver, BC area and having lived in the PNW, I like reading novels set in that part of the US/Canada. The main character, Fati Rizvi, is a single woman who is a PI and also happens to be Muslim. Her religion doesn’t play a big role in the story, but it comes up when she is dealing with family. The time is late December, 2019, just before COVID. Fati winds up investigating what appears to be an accident/suicide of a woman who is treasurer of the small city of Lake Templeton. She is suspected of embezzling money from the city, but Fati has a gut feeling that there is more to this story than it appears. Fati starts off working pro bono as a favor to the police sergeant there who mentored her when she was a cop, but eventually gets some expenses and a small per diem from the police who need her help due to being understaffed. She and her friend Zed work to solve several mysteries associated with this case alongside Detective Singh, a handsome and separated detective who reluctantly (at first) works with Fati to resolve all the issues of the case.

The story is well crafted with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. The writing is very competent and the book has been well edited. The characters are diverse and interesting – I like the different ethnicities that the author has incorporated into the story, giving a little cultural insight to the story. What I find a little unbelievable is how much the police share with Fati, even after they agree to “hire” her as a consultant. Maybe things are different in Canada (and maybe it happens here in the States) but I had a hard time with that concept. I didn’t like the first person present tense POV, either. I prefer third person past tense narrative, but I don’t consider it a deal breaker in a book, it’s just my preference. Fati is a strong, smart central character which is nice to read, especially in a cozy mystery. There is humor in the book, which I also appreciate. There is no romance and no bad language (although Fati is attracted to Det. Singh).

Overall, this is a well crafted story that is mostly believable (believable enough for a work of fiction). You’ll spend a pleasant few hours with these diverse and interesting characters.

*** four and a half shiny stars

A smartly sassy ride-along with an awesome new female Private Investigator, Fati Rizvi, - a coffee-loving, bear-spray-armed, no-holds-barred powerhouse, with a healthy disregard for all things pink and sparkly, as well as pretty much all authority and convention.

Based in Lake Templeton, a fictional small lakeside community in the gorgeous setting of Vancouver Island, Canada, - when a victim is found washed up on a pristine beach, Private Investigator Fati and her resources are called in to assist the overworked and frazzled local police department.

If it wasn’t for the underlying tone of corruption and menace (after all, this is a murder mystery), you’d be tempted to call this story gossipy, - with its briskly hopping pace, shifting focus from character to character, revealing secrets in a lively and compelling patter, all adding up to a crisis-crossing and crazy web of lies, foibles and deceit - ordinary lives buried amongst those slowly revealing themselves as criminal.

As the case increases in complexity, it becomes abundantly clear that solving this puzzle will require a whip-sharp mind, both for Fati and her crew (and their devious methods), and for the reader (in keeping up with this rapidly expanding plot-line).

I loved this book, beginning with the wonderfully-crafted Fati (a new favorite female lead), and extending to her strange and talented underground web of colleagues, - including, but not limited to, Zed, a pierced and tattooed mentee PI with the eagerness of a puppy, blended with the street-smart talents of a snake-charmer (albeit a nice one).

And then of course, there is Detective Talvir Singh - Fati’s newly-attached partner, a fascinating and hormone-inducing homicide detective, whose introduction to the team cannot help but ratchet-up the crime-solving prowess (as well as, undoubtedly, Fati’s heartbeat).

Great fun to read, this is a wonderfully-engaging new start in a promising crime series. I can’t wait to read more of Fati and her casework.

A great big thank you to the author and the publishers for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.

Fati was an interesting and unusal main character and I enjoyed the story but felt that good editing would have made this a better mystery - see below comments.

I felt that the circumstances surrounding the first "murder" were highly improbable. In chapter 5 Aditya immediately spots Fati attempting to take a water bottle and says "Those aren't for the passengers. Please don't take those", but in chapter 15 Aditya says that he didn't notice Sharon taking a water bottle ("I wasn't looking. I wasn't paying attention") and even allows Sharon to leave the aircraft with the bottle. Then Sharon waits until she is in her office before taking the incapacitating dose. Unlikely. And would Aditya still have left the deadly bottles in full view of passengers following Sharon's death?

I also felt that the two break ins to Alena's house were weak, including the discovery of Sharon's sweater. Would Nicholai and Alena really have taken no action against the intruders? The introduction of Nicholai's character seemed only for the purpose of creating tension during the first break in.

There were too many lucky coincidences for me (cell phone being lost, cell phone left unlocked, laptop not password protected…).

There were only one or two superfluous characters, but the various links between the 9 main players were a bit of a stretch at times. These relatively few characters were still sufficient to confuse Fati, as she announces in chapter 19 that they have Aditya "on the hook for Caleb's murder". No. He was on the hook for Sergio's murder.

In terms of writing style I felt that there was a surfeit of similes. In general they cropped up on every page, and on at least one occasion there were two in the same paragraph.

Finally, in chapter 4 Jefferson Wall's words were described as "napalm, soothing and irresistible". I doubt if anyone with first-hand experience of napalm would describe it like this.

Instantly you find out a body has been washed up on a shore but who’s? With a population in Lake Templeton of roughly 5,000 how can a murder even take place. I love how the author introduces you to the characters and describes everything from how they look to how they sound. For a private investigator Fati really does get stuck in as you follow her on her problem solving skills to identify if this was a suicide, an accident or a murder. If you love a book that contains so much detail to follow the clues you will love this. There was so much detail not only on the characters but also the surroundings even so much detail on what role everyone plays. This book really does create the perfect visualisation in your mind for you.

You find out so much information about who Sharon was as a person along the way. I have to say the title of some books I recognised was a great touch. I do love a book where you travel through the chapters following the time frame to the overall completion of the book. I did keep thinking would the police make it home for Christmas from reading a quirky remark from Fati close to the start of the book. I was so fixed on how much information we would find out about the cult. That’s when this book truly gripped my attention. I was shocked how the author completely side steps you with how you feel towards situations that occur and how you feel towards characters.

This was an exceptionally detailed page turning private detective read. For a book that didn’t have a cover I was necessarily drawn to this blew me away. Although the chapters to me felt quite long in places I just couldn’t wait to start a new day with Fati. Especially when she travels to find people who aren’t involved directly with Lake Templeton but have relationships with people not necessary from them whilst they’ve lived there. Got your brains thinking about what I mean now? Then give this a go. It’s fab.

An interesting mystery with lots of suspects set in NW Canada. The main character is a woman private investigator named Fati that is bucking tradition in her family. She loves what she does and gets totally involved in her cases to the exclusion of almost everything else. She is assisting the police in investigating the death of a woman in a small town on Vancouver Island. For some reason she connects with the woman and really wants to find out what happened to her. The woman worked for the city government and the mayor is not being very forthcoming, in fact, she is hiding a lot and lies. Other suspects include another city worker, a pilot of a small air service, a writer, a prominent politician and her son, and a few others.
The settings are described well and so are the characters. Sometimes the description drug on a bit but overall the story kept my attention as there were quite a few twists. It seems everyone was eventually connected somehow and unraveling all the threads took a long time. At first there appeared to be several motives and that also took awhile to unravel and especially when there was a second death. Fati has lots of contacts and she used them to help get her information, sometimes legal and sometimes not. She likes to break into people's residences and steals their phones a lot. Her friend, Zed, was entertaining. She was attracted to the police detective she ended up working with but convinced herself that things would not work out especially since he was only separated from his wife. I have a feeling that could change in subsequent books. She talks about the traditional roles in her immigrant family and how that effects her.
Enjoyed the story and look forward to more by this author.

I found The Lake Templeton Murders refreshingly different. The setting was beautiful and the main protagonist Fati made a delightful change. I loved her no nonsense style. She tells it how it is and somehow manages to get people to tell her things that they wouldn’t tell anyone else. I thought the fact that she was a Private Investigator was a great alternative to the usual stroppy detective story. Fati is feisty and obviously a strong independent woman. I felt very endeared to her, admiring her greatly.

The book is written with intellect and it goes at a pace that keeps you turning the pages and you’ll definitely find yourself in that “oh just one more chapter” phase. I particularly enjoyed that we, the reader seem totally involved. At times it felt like Fati was actually talking to me, sharing her questions as if my opinion mattered. I loved this style completely. We are not left out of Fati’s thought process at all.

The Lake Templeton Murders is the debut whodunit by HS Burney and its hard to believe it’s her first foray into the murder thriller genre. It’s totally brilliant. There are many red herrings along the way. I thought I’d worked it out, felt so sure then, oh no it’s not that/them at all. All the characters are written exceptionally well. You get to know what makes them tick almost immediately. I much prefer books that get to the point, no faff getting to know each character in a round about way. You know instantly each characters little foibles and it creates a utterly compelling read that I really found hard to put down. If you’re looking for a new author, new series and absolutely not cosy murder mystery then this is the one for you.

A cosy murder mystery, set in a small Canadian, lakeside town, with a back drop of magnificent scenery. That’s what I thought I was going to read and two out of three ain’t bad. Lake Templeton is a small coastal town with a magnificent back drop but I would not class this a cosy murder mystery. It is a murder mystery but it is not cosy!!

I have not read HS Burney before so came with a completely open mind not knowing what to expect. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it very intriguing and loved Fati Rizvi. She is a totally different character to your normal PI, from her ethnic background to her outlook on life. I really enjoyed her. I also enjoyed the other characters in the book, especially the eccentric Zed who is the perfect foil for Fati. This is a complex plot with several suspects so you have to keep your wits about you but I found myself really looking forward to diving back in and putting my amateur sleuthing skills to work. Sometimes I thought I had it worked out and then another red herring would pop up. HS Burns has a good grasp of small town life and politics which added another dimension to the book. I would certainly read another by this author.

HS Burney's The Lake Templeton Murders is a must read for all fans of mystery novels. This new writer is now added to my all time favorites. Her writing style is modern, engaging, and fresh. I loved her main protagonist. A strong female who solves mysteries.

The character's attitude and personality made this a joy to read. I found myself laughing along the way. HS Burney is fluent in her craft. Her book is well-written with fully developed characters. The plot had me hooked. It made me think of Agatha Frosts cozy mystery Peridale series with a strong leading female sleuth. Another writer HS Burney reminded me of was Angie Fox's ghost hunter cozy mystery series filled with humor and engaging plotlines. All of them feature strong women. I love how the women stand up and keep doing what they love.

HS Burney is just as talented as these other two writers. I cannot wait to read more adventures by her! Overall, I highly recommend giving this mystery read, The Lake Templeton Murders a read! It's worth every page! Suspense, mayhem, and murder all in one amazing tale.

I enjoyed this book. I loved the setting on Vancouver Island and it brought back some happy memories of a trip to Canada several years ago.

The story starts immediately with the discovery of a body and from then on, we're straight into the investigation. Fati is working in an investigator capacity outside of the police but is eventually brought into the investigation on a consultant basis with one of the detectives.

I liked the character of Fati and her determination to not conform to her family norms. The story had me hooked from the start as the body has already been found, and I was quickly dragged along with it. There are lots of dodgy characters to keep the intrigue going and the story is full of different trails of fraud, murder and blackmail.

I hope this is the start of a series.

Another book I couldn’t put down. Fast-paced, action-packed, full of excitement including murder, corruption, embezzlement, drug dealing and fraud, I gave up trying to work out who dunnit and just concentrated on keeping up with the story. No mean feat I hasten to add.

Private Investigator Fati Rizvi tears around Vancouver and Lake Templeton like a headless chicken on steroids, often with the help of her chemically-fuelled, tattooed, and multiple-earinged, sidekick Zed. But don’t be fooled. Fati has her own methods of investigation – that’s why she left the police force – and often uses somewhat shady methods of gaining information, plus enlisting the help of her ‘contacts’.

Everyone in this story seems to be shady or hiding secrets – some more than others. But are they capable of killing someone in cold blood? Someone obviously is, because the body that turns up on the shore looks like it could be the victim of a murder. The police aren’t convinced – yet – but Fati has a nose for these things and the death of Sharon Reese smells suspicious.

This was seriously exciting stuff. When the evidence appears to point to one possible killer, it appears they may not be guilty of murder, but they are sure as hell guilty of something.

This is definitely one of my favourite books of the year so far. I really hope there’s a sequel, because I need to know more.

Many thanks to @zooloo2008 for inviting me to be part of this blog tour.

This is a suspenseful story that I enjoyed from beginning to end. This is my first book by this author which I look forward to reading more from them in the future. This is a well written story about murders that happen in a small ocean town that leave Fati questioning if it is the same person doing the killing. The question remains, will they murder again before they are stopped? I enjoyed being pulled into the story by the characters from the beginning. I enjoyed the author's writing style as well as their attention to details that gave the story a realistic feeling. I also enjoyed how the characters are relateable and kept the story engaging. The twists and turns are sitting on the edge of your seat, page turning for sure. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.

This was a good who dun in a small town where anyone could be the killer, Fati is a good PI who knows how to weedle info out of people without looking like she is grilling them which comes in handy with the people she meets. At times I felt there were too many words being used to describe things but after getting use to that the story took over and there were a few stories weaved together with the over arching story so make sure you start it without being on a time crunch on when you have to finish as you want to be able to read it start to finish so you keep things straight in your head and as you really do want to know who is behind it all once you start.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Fati Rivzi used to be a cop, but now makes her living as a PI, and if she does say so herself she’s a pretty good one. Normally she waits to be asked to help but this time there is something about this death that makes her think she needs to look into it.

I liked Fatis’ character, she is plain talking, dedicated almost to obsession at times, and always seems to get her bad guys. She’s not above a few sneaky moves, but that’s why she gave up being a cop, as she couldn’t take all the restrictions. I found a few of the characters a a bit two dimensional, particularly Alena and Kim. The plot was good, and although at times it seemed over complicated, I was invested enough to finish the book. 3 1/2⭐️

This novel has been planned to perfection. I honestly can’t really find anything wrong with it. It’s designed to keep you guessing, the who-dun-it finger-pointing in so many possible directions that it’s impossible to land in one spot for very long. So many amazing twists and turns in this unfurling web of deception, corruption, and greed. Is anyone really innocent, when it comes right down to it?

If I could change anything, I would only want to have a bit more insight into who Fati is as a person. What makes her tick, what makes her afraid, what excites her - besides the case.

Five very large and bright stars for HS Burney's fantastic debut novel!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I can’t wait for the next “Fati Rizvi Private Investigator Murder Mystery” to come out!! (less)

This debut murder mystery had enough twists and turns to keep me engaged right to the end. The story picks up when Fati Rivzi, a seasoned private investigator is asked by her former mento to help his small overstretched police force with a suspicious death on Vancouver island. Relentlessly following the clues we tag along with Fati as she unravels all the threads. This novel had a real Canadian flavour and I loved Fati’s first generation immigrant viewpoint and language. The story started out a little too “hard boiled detective” and the use of similes was a bit overdone for me but the author quickly found her own voice. I definitely want to know more of Fati’s past cases and what the future holds. Highly recommend.

This book is an excellent read, that takes you straight into the action.

The story is set in Canada and the author portrays the beauty of the scenery and this one part I really enjoyed.

Fati Ritzi is a smart and driven PI, and is drawn to the discovery of a body that is found washed up. Delving into the victim’s history she is determined to find out whether she was just a Government employee or was there more to her life. Did this lead to her death?

I read this book really quickly and to me that is always a sign of a book that is well written.

I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Thank you for Rachel's Random Resources for allowing me to review on the tour of The Lake Templeton Murders by HS Burney.

I loved the cover and the synopsis as it sounded like the right book for me, and I am so glad I joined the tour.

I found the book to be well written with enough tension to keep me reading.

HS Burney is a new author, and for her debut book, she has done a really good job of keeping the reader wanting to keep reading, I will definitely keep an eye on future books from her.
