The Converging Six

Rate this book
What would you do if your life, memories, and feelings were suddenly tied to another person?
Six people. One life.

A spoiled prince haunted by a ghost. A big city swindler with a knack for illusions. A cold soldier with a sharp eye. A pirate with a few screws loose. A chieftain’s bookish daughter with carefully bandaged hands. A peacekeeping agent with an eye for vengeance.

After simultaneously knocking on death’s door, these six find themselves psychically connected across national lines. Tensions rise between them and between their respective countries, which are recovering from a long war over the mysterious vitae—an energy source harvested and utilized in weapons and engines called conductors. Loyalty, memory, and sense of self blur as conspiracies encroach.

Assassination attempts, underground weapons dealings, border conflicts, tales of terrifying beasts, and a terrorist organization called ELPIS.

—Everything is connected. Nothing is coincidental. The spark has ignited…!

The plot

The Converging Six is the first part of six in the Six Chances series.
In the fictional continent of Signum, twelve nations fight to control and harvest the mysterious Vitae, the most precious energy source of all. Though little is known about Vitae, one thing is certain: it is not only an energy source, instead it characterizes every human being and plays a major role in the cycle of life. And six people are about to discover exactly how much it can affect their lives.

Olivier, Cadence, Werner, Maria, Atienna and Jericho all come from different backgrounds and have no loyalty to each other; however, after each and every one of them had a simultaneous pre-death experience, suddenly they find themselves sharing thoughts, memories and emotions.

While trying to understand and come to terms with their current situation, the Six have to deal also with the outside world and the many challenges it poses to them and their newly found connection. To overcome assassination attempts, border conflicts, shadow enemies and a terrorist organization, they will have to learn to trust and put their lives in each other’s hands.

The story

The story is simply amazing. Perfect for those readers who love interconnected plot lines, complete with secondary plots regarding both the main and secondary characters, filled with mysteries that will keep your mind running and unexpected plot twists you won’t see coming.

I don’t want to make comparisons, but in my personal opinion the way in which the author manages the universe they have created rivals the planning and the attention to details of many great authors (namely, for example, George Martin of GOT/A Song of Ice and Fire). Everything just clicks perfectly with something else, like pieces of a puzzle; as the story goes on (I am currently at book 4), I am more and more amazed by how the plot was carefully planned in advance and how nothing comes out as boring or excessive.

The characters

The story revolves around six main characters, even though as the book progresses many interesting secondary and tertiary characters are introduced to support the main six. All of them, however, are “round” characters and just keep getting better the more the story progresses.

In general, each book of the series focuses on one of the main characters. This part is Olivier’s, also known as Olive, but being this the first book, it acts also as a general introduction for all the characters. This is helped by the structure of the book, which can be particular at the beginning, but the more you read, the more it makes sense: each chapter is narrated from a different character’s POV, but being the Six psychically connected, they are aware of each other’s thoughts and feelings.

This expedient helps the reader understand and get to know each character in a personal way, highlighting the different way in which they act, speak, think and feel. The contrast of personalities plays quite a big role in making them complex and realistic characters in the reader’s eyes, and it’s perfectly executed! Over the book(s) we get to see the Six experience love, sorrow, betrayal, happiness, surprise, conflict, sadness and many other emotions that I felt deeply while reading.

To sum up

An interesting plot, realistic characters, mysteries to unveil, a race against time and six people who find the meaning of family together. One of the best series I’ve ever read in my life!
A book definitely worth reading.

This is a general review for the entirety of Six Chances.

First off, I'd like to say that I'm not a crier. At all. But Six Chances has made me sob, have chills, and turn from lurker, into a commenter, into one of the author's (self-named) most avid fans. This is one of my favourite stories; reading this is like scratching an itch you never knew you had. There's a bit of something in here for everyone; the genre follows a science fantasy theme (perhaps better described as steampunk), aspects of psychological thrillers, drama (galore), and deep immersion involving extremely consistent worldbuilding that takes in twists and features from chapters befofre into new plots in entirely consistent ways. The tags in the description do not disappoint when it says there is a fair amount of Chekov's Guns.

Characters - These certainly do not disappoint; it would be inaccurate to call it "character development" so much as "character evolution" for how much work the author puts into them. They are incredibly complex and nuanced, and the worldbuilding also ties into them on a very deep level. Very well executed.

The unique thing about the authors style is that it changes depending on the characters pov, which is quite the feat with the host of detailed characters.

Story - One of the best I've read, with regards to development, worldbuilding and progression. Makes for a very immersive world with very detailed (and a unique) system. Plotlines are very gripping, and as the description tags say, involve a fair amount of conspiracies and converging plotlines. As I said before, the worldbuilding and the events are very consistent; story mechanics referenced in chapters before vaguely, are built upon and information is never infodumped egregiously. That's not to say that there are never plot twists, but I mean consistency in the sense that even when something comes out of the blue, it is generally in line with previously established mechanics and possibilities. This story has a fair amount of both action and political intricracy executed very well.

A small note: the author is very fond of easter eggs. You might find hints to what is coming next in something generally overlooked like the character names if you look hard enough :D

The author's style of writing evolves as each part begins and concludes with each part being better and better than the next
