"Without a doubt, Franki possesses a rare gift of distilling life’s complexity into everyday words." - David Tensen. Author of ‘The Wrestle’ and ‘So I Wrote You a Poem’.
How to Find Love in the Dark, is a book of poems dedicated to trauma, anxiety and rediscovering faith despite the suffering. A journey through death and resurrection. In both the warmth of the sun and its blistering heat. It is here, that we find our true self and discover how to live in the tension between the trauma and the beauty.
I expected to read this collection quickly, working through the poems with a vague nod of approval and then moving on. But sometimes I would come to the end of a poem and say, "Wait, what was that?" and read it again. And other times I marked pages because I was so struck by the succinct power of Franki's words. I'll be going back to sit with those a while.
Wow, a poetry collection that pierces into heart and offers hope, dignity, and healing!
I am a big fan of brevity free verse and Franki knocks it out of the park with his first book. Be ready to go on a journey with Franki. He vulnerable expresses the struggles of life that everyone can relate with, the struggle of being human. He opens the doors to the shadowy places and let's us enter into his journey. And by doing that, he opens up the space of my own journey.
The vulnerability, letting us see the deconstruction, being "undone" - is powerful. Whether it is poem "Rest For A Weary Soul", "Beach", or "Beshsaida", the reader will be pulled into their own experience. In naming the wounding healing comes. "Bethsaida" just reaches into the painful places of shame and offers dignity, hope.
Congratulations Franki and keep on writing, you have so much more to say!
Over all, a great collection. I appreciated that there was some suggestion of grouping by theme within the volume to give semblance of context. Also, there were some excellent "food for thought" works throughout, which led to some interesting conversation with others on various topics.
On the downside, while I am familiar with free form/free verse poetry style (and predominantly write my own poetry in it) there were times when Franki's was too "bare bones" even for me (who tends to write very tight verses as well). While I know it can be difficult to create a collection with enough content. I know that even deconstructed poems can take a great deal of thought to create. I know they may well be as, or even more, profound than another. However, I personally prefer longer and more constructed pieces. Finally, a lack of interior art and an abrupt end led to my final rating of 4/5.
To summate, a collection which radiates simple beauty and thoughtful intention, yet lacked in some finer aspects with which some appreciators and/or creatives may well desire, to experience full immersion and connection with the art.
A beautiful outpouring of one's journey, filled with struggles and triumphs. The poetry and words in this book are impacting, the type that linger around, filling hollow spaces, to be ones that you will ponder and think of for awhile--in moments you need a reminder.
Thoroughly enjoyed this work, would recommend to anyone looking for heartfelt poetry of the soul, something to encourage and also something that whispers "we are human." "You are not alone."
This is such a beautiful collection of poems, and was such a healing read. The poems are raw and so deeply connect with the place in life I find myself. I read most of this book in the mornings when I first woke up and I had so many moments of tears and joy. If you get a chance to, definitely give this book a read!
A beautiful, raw collection of poetry. I especially love the paraphrases of scripture and the writings from bible characters. God's good perfect love is displayed throughout. Well done.
