Who Dunnit!

Mysteries always follow some sort of format, and this one isn't really any different. We have to figure out who murdered Frank Stone's wife. You get these little clues which make you change your initial opinion, and soon you're sure you know, but you're wrong. In the meantime you're hit with these cliff hanger chapters which keep changing the situation so you don't know what's going on with the twists and the turns, and the reversals. Confusing the situation is the foreknowledge from the future which gets in the way. I usually don't like murder mysteries, but this was entertaining, and fun. There's some back and forth with Jason Apsley, but I like Frank Stone much better.

If you can get past the clunky first act with its disjointed non-linear story and constantly switching POVs, you'll be in for a good ride.

The story is strong and the third act twist/killer's reveal was shocking and unexpected even though I guessed it might be possible earlier on.

A huge downside with this book is for younger readers or non-brits reading abroad. There are way too many pop-cultural references that not only distract and confuse when you're not familiar with them - they actually get in the way of relating to the characters and situation. Even when I figured out what he was on about, they pulled me out of the story which is never a good thing. Worse still, the author relies on them to describe the physical traits of the characters so if you have no idea who the TV or film character is, you'll be utterly clueless.

The slang had the opposite effect as it humanized the characters. If they used an unfamiliar turn of phrase, it was easy to chalk it up as colorful personalities and discern their meaning through context.

Another smash hit

What can I say Mr Cousins has done it again, I must admit I was a little perplexed as to where the story was going at the beginning of the book but I read on as I've read all of this authors previous books and had me at been let down by the story before and he really doesn't disappoint this time round either . The lead character Frank is something of a grumpy old man when you first meet him but considering his life up to this point ( I won't spoil the plot) it's certainly understandable but I really found myself liking him more and more as the story progresses. Absolutely top class writing again and really looking forward to reading any future books by this man , can't recommend it highly enough, you won't be disappointed. Shame I can't give it more than 5 stars though

Having grown up watching Dr Who and Time Tunnel I've always had a weakness for any time related stories and came across Adrian Cousins accidentally and figured his books would be a good fit for me. This is the first of his books I've read and I found it fun, entertaining and enjoyed him playing with the concepts of changing peoples time lines and the impact it could have.
This story revolves around sending a 66yr old down and out man called Frank, whose life had gone badly wrong 36years before, to change the events that ruined his life and resulted in an opportunity to avert a dramatic national or possibly global event from happening in the future.
Being 63 myself I strongly relate to what life and attitudes were like in the late 70's and how much I have changed compared to my younger self and could empathise with the situations Frank experiences.
Next I'm reading the sequel.

Absolutely loved this book. Frank has the chance to time travel back to 1979 to save his wife, and what made it all the enjoyable was reliving life in the late 1970s. The author reminded readers what life was like, how sexist men were towards women and even wove current events like Brexit into the story!

This was a lighthearted read, which had the ability to make me laugh and get frustrated too. I am glad I read it on my kindle as otherwise I may have been tempted to look to the last page to find out who did or didn’t murder Franks wife!

Along with Frank, I kept trying to work out the murderer… and I was soo wrong! But loved the guessing game! A great read and look forward to reading the next one!

I love Adrian’s descriptive style and his characters are so easy to relate to that I’ve already cast actors to some of the parts in my mind. He also places you firmly and accurately in the social and cultural 70s era. That said, this book was not quite up to the same standard as the first two - the copy-checking was sloppy in places, the romantic prose was toe-curling and I had worked out one of the ‘big reveal’ moments well ahead of time. Despite these things though, it was still a good, entertaining read that kept me wanting to see how it ended. (I can only assume there will be a follow up, because otherwise, the ending was a bit random!)

No Jason Apsley this time, although there is a slight nod to his tales, but don't let that put you off. Bit slow at the start although it is well worth sticking with this story of Frank Stone, living the life of a down and out, being sent back into his 1979 self to save his wife from murder. He may be in his 1979 body but he has the memories and wisdom of his older self, seeing his wife in a new light second time around. Enjoyable read.

I love a bit of time travel and this is my third Adrian Cousins book. This one was really interesting as the main character knew what was happening to him therefore there was no time wasted on him getting to grips with his new time line.
The characters are relatable; albeit displaying some awful behaviours which were accurate for the time and it is written in a casual easy reading style with phrases that often make me laugh.
I enjoyed the twists and turns of solving a mystery with the knowledge of what happened first time around. I look forward to reading more books from this author.

A time travelling who done it

This book pulled me along nicely as, with most people, the idea that is possible to restart your life and not mess it up so spectacular my is so appealing. The time setting is accurately described and there is a realistic reaction by the main character to his experience.

This is also a who done it mystery that keeps you guessing.

I'm looking forward to the next book.

I absolutely loved this - it probably helps that I remember 1979 very well.
Not sure how this book will go down with the Gen Z lot - will probably be offended - ...lol...
Excellent standalone time-travel book with a difference.

Have so far failed to download the free story, but even that doesn't take the shine off it.

Definitely 100% recommended for those into the sci-fi genre, especially Time Travel.
A suitable replacement for H.G. Wells and an excellent storyteller.

Would definitely have had a bet on Greece (IFYKYK).

very good!

Wonderfully written and so much fun to read! I felt as if I was right back in 1979, and I realized how much I gave forgotten! The humor was fun and the mystery kept me on the edge of my seat. I guess it sounds like AI is writing this review, Ha! It’s not, I’m just so glad I picked out this book from so many others. Time travel can be tough to write, but Mr. Cousins totally pulled it off.

This was a boring story

I love most time travel stories. I just did not care for this one. I'd rate as "R" as the language and bedroom scenes are not for the faint of heart or teenagers. The main character is so far unforgettable as most sci-fi and time travel are accepted in today's culture. Not here with Frank Stone 😓😴
I did enjoy the humor (humour) added with real people added.

get past the first few chapters and the book is brilliant

I only gave this a four star review as to be honest the beginning of the book nearly made me not bother reading it, I found it really difficult to get into, but once you got into the story line it was as good as the first two books.

A warning to Americans!

This book is not for someone who is not from England. Although I am an American, born and bred, I have been a follower of English movies and TV shows since the 1950's. But I had trouble with many, many references in this book. If you have no knowledge of this, you will be completely lost! All of that said, it is a good and different take on time travel.

Apart from being a little over written in places this was another thoroughly enjoyable time travel read from Adrian Cousins. Very well thought out and entertaining with a whole mixture of emotions. Also liked the little cross overs with the other books. Hope to see more of Frank Stone. Well done Adrian!

Another Cousin's masterpiece

A truly enjoyable read that whilst following a certain formula from other of his works, had enough twists to keep me changing my mind as to who I thought the villain would be.

I've read all of his books and they're all great if you like the idea of fine travel - who doesn't.

It was so refreshing to read a book that was a good story, a bit quirky and a sense of humour.

I loved the reference to the behaviours in the 70’s reminded me of life on Mars. I will defy read more from Adrian, especially as I can also get his books via audiobooks which is a godsend for someone with Parkinson’s Disease and insomnia 😀.

Think what would you think if someone said they could send you back in time?

Great story, it's time travel, and, the view is from a normal person. Time travel, impossible!!!! Or is it, But also about how time plays with our memories. Well thought out fun read, cannot wait to see what happens next.

Another excellent time travel book.

I was a tiny bit disappointed when I realised the next Adrian cousins book wasn’t a continuation of the Jason Apsley series. However, I was hooked by the first page and loved every moment. Time travel at its finest.

Really enjoyed it

I have read all Cousins' time travel books so far and get through them quickly. Very cleverly written, combining sci-fi, mystery and humour. If any of those genres interest you I recommend reading Cousins' work.

Very Enjoyable

I really enjoy this author's writing style. It's not a typical time travel story wherein the characters might jump around between many era. This is more of a jump from current day to a specific point, then a murder-prevention mystery/adventure. Very nice.

Excellent yarn, and trip back in time for the reader

The book is well written in my view. It's entertaining in its own
right, but it also takes the reader back to 1979 in a small way.
Great for all readers, extra fun for people alive in 1979.

Great story, couldn't put it down. This is the forth book I have read by this author, a stand alone, with a few references to the Jason trilogy. Now to start the Deana story.

Another classic time travel novel

Another classic Adrian Cousins book.
An intriguing story well put together and with the witty anecdotes we've come to expect!
I love the way all stories link in their complicated way together.
Thanks again Adrian.
