I bought this book as an exercise in nostalgia--Professor Orear was one of my physics profs at university fifty or so years ago and my class was the guinea-pig for this book. We got it one Xeroxed chapter at a time throughout the semester.
That said , the book is a serious-undergrad survey of modern physics. It's by no means an easy read, but it's clear and concise, my classmates and I having been the unwilling discoverers of any failure of clarity and conciseness. In a sense, the book is a little dated--physics has evolved a bit over the last half century--but the obsolescence is in omission of the latest developments, not in the solid presentation of physics as it was fifty years ago.
There are, of course, many physics textbooks in print, but for anyone looking for a first comprehensive look at literally fundamental physics, or brushing up on time-faded understanding of it, you pretty much can't go wrong with this book.
