Bio Kairen Alaina is a mother of three, a grandmother of five (so far) and a, once upon a time, child care worker. As a youngster, she remembers eagerly listening to bedtime stories made up by family members, then later, she cherished storytimes with her own little ones. These experiences evolved into a dream to write children’s books, but with work, art and a busy lifestyle, this dream was set upon the back burner.
During the 2021 lockdown and a lot of free time Kairen had a chance to realise her dream. She not only wrote, but illustrated, designed and self published her first children's book-
I Can Do That. A Little Girl’s Day of Big Challenges
Taking on a new (to her) medium of digital painting she lovingly crafted a relatable story that not only entertains, but encourages independence
Scarlett is a little girl, and her mom wants to play a game all day long. The game is mommy and daddy will give her different challenges all day, and she has to see if she can do them all by herself. Challenges like making her bed, cleaning her room, helping with shopping, and even playing at the park and drawing a picture make for a full day of fun. Scarlett spends the day thinking she is playing a game but is really learning and growing as she completes each of her challenges.
I Can Do That: A Little Girls’s Day of Big Challenges is written for preschoolers and kindergarten level children; this book introduces taking responsibility in a fun and creative way. Scarlett has a mantra she repeats with each task given, “I can do that!” This phrase is often heard from small children and allows them to feel empowered and able to accomplish things. Finding age-appropriate jobs and helping them succeed is a delicate balance, and this picture book demonstrates a creative way to engage children. Learning while playing is a crucial developmental skill, and Scarlett jumps right into this activity despite the fear that she may not be able to do everything. Her mom, however, offers encouragement and tells her all she needs to do is try and ask for help if she can’t do it.
Author and illustrator Kairen Alaina is immensely talented and does a fantastic job composing this children’s story and providing whimsical artwork to follow along. Reading this playful story aloud will entertain children and adults with a positive and energetic narrative.
I Can Do That: A Little Girls’s Day of Big Challenges is a remarkable picture book that will delight children and adults. Parents and teachers will love having this charismatic book on hand to help teach children about responsibility and building self-confidence.
Thank you to Goodreads for this Kindle win! This was a very timely book as my 7 year old daughter has been having some trouble with being more independent. We read it together and she loved how at the end of each page was a little song you could sing while doing these "tasks". Granted these things in the book are for a younger age child but the whole point of doing tasks and by themselves is a good lesson for any age! We liked the pictures too!

This book encourages children to do things on there own. Everything from brushing your teeth to tiding up your bedroom.
The illustrations are nicely done and the reader can reference the pictures, when talking to their child. My granddaughter, did not enjoy the illustrations and I did have some issues when I would ask her a question. However she likes bold colors and the ones in this book are more calming colors.
A nice little book about a little girl learning to be able to do things independently. It's very prettily illustrated, & they're detailed enough too, to make it fun to look at. Reading it to/with a little kid might inspire some discussion! I won this through the Goodreads Giveaways. This book is super cute. I read it to my two girls and now they want me to assign them tasks, which makes me happy.
But we were confused about the tasks. It went to her waking up and wanting to do the tasks straight into task number 2. There was no indication what task number 1 was.
Other than that, super cute and very nice illustrations.
Received as a giveaway. Not of much interest to my young reader or to me. The whole story is essentially, "I do as my parents say." Obedience is great, but it doesn't make for an interesting story.
