Samantha Murphy, divorced businesswoman and mother of two almost-adult-children, was back on the family farm in rural Burrumba to look after her parent’s property while they had a long awaited and well-deserved holiday. In her forties, Sam hadn’t expected to feel so at home when she returned from her home on the Sunshine Coast, after her departure when she was eighteen, with only quick visits over the years. Loading her father’s ute with bales of hay, feeding the cattle in the drought – it was backbreaking work. Catching up with her old horse, Matey, was wonderful. She was enjoying every moment of it.

Jack Cameron lived on the property beside the Murphy’s and had been asked by Sam’s father to keep an eye on things. Jack and Sam had been teenage sweethearts until Sam left town, and Jack had married and had two children himself. His divorce had shattered him; the separation from his girls hurt. But catching up with Sam again was heartwarming.
Jack was a volunteer in the Rural Fire Service and with the fire in the nearby National Park, he was working hard with the other RFS members to keep it at bay, while Sam looked after his property as well as hers. But as the temperatures soared and the wind picked up, everyone knew the fire monster was out of control and their little town was in danger of being inundated. What would be the outcome when three trucks and seven men went missing, including Jack?

The devastating bushfires of 2019/2020 in Australia is something we hope never repeats, and Aussie author Karly Lane has covered one area well in her latest novel, Once Burnt, Twice Shy. In a tribute to our wonderful RFS members all over the country, and the work they do with no thought to their own safety, she tells Sam and Jack’s story of tragedy, heartbreak, love and hope, along with second chances. A heartwarming story, I have no hesitation in recommending Once Burnt, Twice Shy to fans of the genre.

With thanks to Allen & Unwin AU for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Samantha Murphy left her home on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and returned to her parents farming property in New South Wales. Her days of long lunches and beauty treatments were well behind her as she house-sat her parent's property while they were away on the world trip. Their property included a couple of hundred acres of farmland with livestock this was not your average house sitting job.

The families property held fond memories for Sam. It was the place she grew up and it was a time she took for granted. Sam was eighteen when she left her parents property leaving behind broken-hearted Jack Cameron who lived nearby and thought their love would last a lifetime, but it seemed Sam had other ideas. Seeing Sam again would bring mixed feelings for Jack even though he had grown up since then and made a life of his own. He was a volunteer with the local Rural Fire Service and with a fire in the National Park he was kept busy as there was a real threat that things were about to get out of control especially when Jack went missing.

Once again Australian author Karly Lane does not disappoint her readers with her latest book. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this book as I have enjoyed all of her books including this book. This book gives well deserved praise for the hard work of the Rural Fire Service and all of the volunteers who put their lives on the line year after year, but especially during the horrendous and devastating bushfires of 2019/2020 a time when so many lost so much.

When I came across this part about Guinea Fowl I just had to include it in my review as it made me laugh out loud. Guinea Fowl – to Sam they seemed to be the love child of a drunken night between a turkey and a vulture. 😂😂 After reading this not only did it have me laughing, but it also had me intrigued about Guinea Fowl which lead me to do a bit of google research. Karly Lane is a favourite author of mine, but once you’ve read her books it’s not hard to understand why. Her love and appreciation of country life and country community shines through in all of her books. I thoroughly enjoyed this book with strong characters and detailed descriptions throughout this is a fabulous read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Once Burnt, Twice Shy is my first read of a Karly Lane novel, and I can see why she is so popular!

ONCE BURNT TWICE SHY is the perfect summer rural romance read. You can’t help but fall in love with the wonderful characters of Sam and Jack and their second chance at love and rebuilding their lives.

Samantha (Sam) is from the Sunshine Coast and has agreed to house-sit for her parents at their mid North coast, NSW farming property where she grew up. Sam’s parents are off on a round world trip so they’ll be gone a while. Sam has two adult daughters and is recently divorced, she feels at home on the farm.

Jack and Sam were teenage sweethearts and being farming neighbours in a small rural town once more they were destined to meet up again. When Jack goes missing during a catastrophic fire, Sam fears the worse.

An important focus and tense part of the story were the devastating bushfires and the wonderful work that that the Rural Fire Service and it’s hundreds of volunteer fire-fighters do. And let’s not forget those everyday heroes that do everything they can to help. I enjoyed the humour in the story too, those guinea fowl were hilarious!

Living in Australia bushfires are always an ever-present threat in the hot, dry summers and we’ve have some devastating ones in recent years (1920-1921). It was emotional to feel that connection to the story.

An absolutely wonderful tribute to the Rural Fire Service and the work they selflessly do.

Thank you so much to the lovely team at Allen & Unwin for sending me a copy of the book

Karly Lane once again brings her characters into our homes and into our hearts.

In Once Burnt, Twice Shy we get a front line look at the devastating fires that scorched Australia in the summer of 2019 - 2020. A tribute to our unsung heroes, the Rural Fire Service and it's hundreds of volunteer fire fighters who put their lives in danger to save the lives and livelihoods of people everywhere.

I liked that Karly stayed away from the politics of it all and concentrated on the characters and the community. Set on the mid-north coast of NSW the fires are described as if we are there amidst the action and I could feel the anxiety as Sam readied the farm to leave as the fire approached. Lane passionately communicates the devastation of losing a family home that has been passed down through the generations and the insurmountable amount of work to rebuild; new fencing, sheds, livestock and all this came after a long drough that ahd already caused financial stress.

Most farmers were also volunteer fire fighters working the farm as well as fighting fires. A lot of the farmers find it hard to ask for help. They are hard working and self sufficient, getting on with the job and holding their emotions in.

Karly Lane adds humour which I feel is needed in these stories of hardship. It doesn't take away from the drama it just lightens the book up a bit.

Once Burnt, Twice Shy is however a romance so the main characters and their budding relationship is a large focus in the story. Sam is back home in Burrumba, it doesn't matter how long you've been gone, where you grew up is always home. She is there to attend the family farm while her parents take a much anticipated holiday.
Sam reunites with neighbour and high school boyfriend Jack. It's been 30 years but the spark is still there. Lane raises realistic circumstances as road blocks in Jack and Sam's ongoing relationship. The two main characters in this story are middle-aged with teenaged children which gives for a whole set of drama in a new relationship.

Once Burnt, Twice Shy is an engaging second chance romance rich in issues relevant to rural communities.

Karly's books are my go to! I eagerly await every new release and I feel Karly puts a little of herself in every book which makes it all the more engaging.

My Thoughts /

Before we begin, I would like to bring to your attention the selfless work of our Country's Rural Fire Service. The Queensland RFS comes under the umbrella of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), which is the primary provider of fire and emergency services in Queensland, Australia. The [Queensland] Rural Fire Service (RFS), is made up of approximately 9000 volunteers (5000 active), approximately 1400 rural fire brigades and are mainly responsible for responding to bushfires but do have some land management capability. Falling under the QFES, means that RFS volunteers will support the Fire & Rescue Service in any emergency as required.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is the world's largest volunteer fire service. Its members provide fire and emergency services to approximately 95 percent of NSW. The Mission Statement speaks for itself—
To provide a world standard of excellence in the provision of a community-based fire and emergency service. To protect the community and our environment we will minimise the impact of fire and other emergencies by providing the highest standards of training, community education, prevention and operational capability.

Once Burnt, Twice Shy is written by Australian Author, Karly Lane. Lane lives on the beautiful Mid North Coast of NSW in Australia and is one of Australia's leading specialist writers of rural fiction.

Once she turned 18, Samantha Murphy left her small country town for the beckoning night life and big city vibes. There she met a man, married, had two girls and ran a very successful business for nearly 30 years. Now though, her marriage has fallen apart, she's recently divorced and her girls are now adults and have moved away from home. She has even sold her boutique business and her life just seems to be losing its appeal. So when Sam's parents leave on an extended overseas holiday, she agrees to house-sit her parent's farm while they are away. Only it's not your usual house-sitting gig - the farm has several hundred acres of farming and livestock to take care of. Not to mention the house pets: dogs, chickens and guinea fowl, along with the cattle, farm dogs and horses. It's a much bigger job than Sam remembered it to be.

Jack Cameron is the Murphy's nearest neighbour and a friend of her parents. Growing up together, Jack fell in love with Sam when they were teenagers, and when Sam left town Jack was heartbroken. Now that she's back, Jack realises that he still has deep feelings for Sam. Is it possible that there could be a ‘second chance’ romance between Sam and Jack?? Both are divorced. Both carry baggage from their previous relationships, and both have daughters who aren’t comfortable with their parent becoming involved with someone else. Well, it's not too difficult to guess how it's going to turn out with our two protagonists - I mean, that's what we like about women's rural fiction…..the guy gets the girl, right??

If that were the only story here, I would give this book maybe a 3 star rating. But, thankfully, Lane has given her story some real depth with her separate subplot focusing on the bushfires of 2020. Her descriptions and recollections of this moment in time are impressive. The impact the fire had on the land and its inhabitants is fully clear and intense. It is here that Lane writes about the amazing work that people who live in rural communities do when they are under threat. They rally. They band together and protect each other. They rebuild and keep on living their lives.

Loved this book. These are the reasons why;

I could relate to the bushfire story as our towns went through bushfires in 2019/2020.

I loved the idea of the sea change as so many are doing this now, it was very realistic.

I felt like I was a part of everybody's family. I was very connected to the characters.

I loved how the characters were down to earth.

I could picture this fictional place whilst reading it.

Easy paced , the story just flowed.

I felt all the emotions fear, hope , despair and happiness.

I highly recommend this book.

This is another amazing book form such a wonderful story teller, Karly Lane digs deep into her characters emotions and brings them to life on the pages, and with this one she has added the emotions of the horrendous bushfires that affected a big part of Australia last year and done it so well. It is a beautiful romance, a must read, I do hope you come along for the emotional journey and meet Sam and Jack, you will not want to put it down once you have picked it up.

Samantha Murphy is a divorced a mother of two adult daughters Living on the Gold Coast, she moved away from the family farm years ago, but her parents are going on a trip and Sam has jumped at the chance to house-sit while they are away, this few weeks changes Sam’s life in many ways, first it brings her back together with her first boyfriend, neighbour Jack Cameron, a lot has happened to them both over the years but there is a spark that still remains and Sam is re-thinking her life.

Jack is now a divorced father of two daughters who live with their mother, he has run the family farm for many years and loves what he does, but when his girlfriend Sam left him all those years ago he was heart-broken and never got over her and here she is back in town and next door again. With his offer to help her this brings them together and keeping apart is hard to do there are so many feelings still there.

The weather has been so hot, there has been no rain for such a long time and the fires start in the National Park when the wind picks up nothing will stand in its way and many houses are evacuated and Sam is one of them, Jack is fighting the fire with the Rural Fire Service and doing all they can, the emotions run high with danger all around, when Jack is reported missing Sam is devastated for the man that she loves and has never really forgotten.

This is a beautifully written story as Karly Lane knows how to do so well, it is heart-warming and heart-breaking at the same time as Jack and Sam find love the second time around but not without some ups and downs, I do highly recommend this one, as we get to know some heroes that are the Rural Fire Service, I could feel the heat and wind as I turned the pages of this one and feel the stress and hope that flowed and there are some witty moments with the guinea fowls, that had me smiling. I loved the ending, there were happy tears from this reader.

My thanks to Allen & Unwin for my copy to read and review

The selfless work of our country’s Rural Fire Service is placed in the spotlight thanks to Once Burnt, Twice Shy the latest rural fiction release from Karly Lane. A story of faith, courage, strength and future prospects, Karly Lane’s eighteenth novel is a sizzling summer read.

Leading the way in Karly Lane’s latest triumph is Samantha Murphy. This recently divorced mother returns to her home town to help her parents. While house sitting her family’s rural property, Samantha must contend with over a hundred acres of farming land and some rather unruly livestock. For Sam this return home is quite different to her life on the coast, but she embraces the change while considering her future options now that she is divorced. When Sam encounters local man Jack Cameron while tending to her family’s property, she realises that she still has lasting feelings for her teenage sweetheart. However, just as Jack and Sam begin to rekindle their love, their lives are put on the line due to a raging bushfire. With her family’s beloved property directly in line with the fire, the situation looks bleak. Will Sam and Jack survive the fire engulfing their community?

Devoted mother and writer Karly Lane is one of Australia’s leading specialists in rural fiction and she has demonstrated that she can successfully combine family life with writing stories about our stunning countryside. I am a loyal fan of Karly Lane, and I was very pleased to be offered the opportunity to review Once Burnt, Twice Shy. This novel marks the eighteenth release from the bestselling author and it is a story that works hard to draw our attention to the essential lifesaving work of Australia’s Rural Fire Service.

In the acknowledgements section of Once Burnt, Twice Shy, author Karly Lane openly admits to this novel being difficult to write due to witnessing her community lose their properties and livestock due to devastating fires in the region. I am thankful to Karly Lane for overcoming this personal difficulty to pen this moving story. As a result of this direct first experience with bushfires Karly Lane has composed a tale that accurately expresses the sheer fear, heightened emotions and panic surrounding this severe threat. Lane balances the feelings of danger and uncertainty with the selfless dedication of the Rural Fire Service. It is important to give a voice to and acknowledge the efforts of these everyday heroes, even if it is in a contemporary fiction novel format.

Alongside the powerful bushfire theme and community spirit depicted in this novel is a second chance style romance. The leads of this tale have previously been a relationship as teenagers. Lane explores the idea of reconnecting again as an adult once divorce, children and life paths have entered the love equation. As a forty-something I really enjoyed Sam and Jack’s romance as I was really able to connect to their middle-aged love story. It was refreshing to see a rural romance play out from a mature protagonist angle. Lane successfully explores the back stories and personal baggage of her leads, providing her audience with a high engaging rural romance tale.

Lane has inserted a great set of characters for her readers to contend with in Once Burnt, Twice Shy. I did take a very early liking to heroine Sam and I sympathised with her life situation. While hero Jack was a breath of fresh air, I really hoped that these two souls would reconnect. With a fabulous community support base and some very memorable animal figures included in Lane’s new novel, these additional plot flourishes made Once Burnt, Twice Shy a memorable read. I really loved the animal folk in Once Burnt, Twice Shy, there are some cracking farm creatures, including some very funny guinea fowl who deliver a good serve of humour to this rural fiction tale. Overall, I think there is plenty on offer for readers to enjoy in Lane’s eighteenth release.

Karly Lane gives it her all in Once Burnt, Twice Shy. I really valued this one and I hope you do too.

Once Burnt, Twice Shy is about how two people learn about the meaning of home and true love. After a divorce, Samantha Murphy felt lost, so she decided to help her parents go overseas by house-sitting her childhood home. Before he left, Samantha Murphy asked his neighbour Jack Cameron to help Samantha while he was away. However, this request makes Jack Cameron's life difficult due to their teenage love. The readers of Once Burnt, Twice Shy will continue to follow Samantha Murphy and Jack Cameron to find out what happens.

Once Burnt, Twice Shy is a lovely rural romance that allowed me to sit with a cup of tea and biscuit and forget about the world's worries. I love Karly Lane's portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout this book. Once Burnt, Twice Shy is well written and researched by Karly Lane. I like how Karly Lane describes the settings of Once Burnt, Twice Shy, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Once Burnt, Twice Shy will learn about the role of the rural fire brigade in rural Australia during bush fires season. Also, the readers of Once Burnt, Twice Shy will understand the issues that colic can cause horses.

I recommend this book.

Thank you Allen & Unwin for sending us a copy to read and review.
Every time I read a Karly Lane book, I know I’m in safe hands with this trusted popular rural writer and Once Burnt, Twice Shy is another standout and not to be missed.
Samantha Murphy returns to the family farm from busy Sunshine Coast to look after the large property and a menagerie of animals as her parents holiday.
It also brings back memories from the past.
When she was a teenager she was in love with Jack Cameron.
Jack, now a divorced father, had his heart broken when Sam left town.
Now back, they find there’s still a spark between them and pending issues.
Then a tragic fire burns through the town and both find they need to prepare that anything could happen.
There is plenty here to adore and keep the reader invested in.
Karly has the wonderful ability to balance the intense landscape and memorable characters with an alluring plotline.
With many great books in her back catalogue, there’s no slowing Karly down as she continues to give fans high quality entertainment.
This is just another prime example of her unique stories that will definitely be jumping off the shelves into your shopping trolleys for many years to come.
While there’s a gentle focus on romance, we also get the harsh atmosphere of a burning fire raging throughout, a mix that’s not too heavy on both sides as the story unfolds engaging the reader with suspense and love.
An inviting cover and a plot that’s wonderful and addictive all the way through to the final paragraph.

Karly Lane shines a light on the Rural Fire Service, and their heroic efforts during Black Summer in this heartfelt rural romance set in the mid north coast of NSW.

At a loose end now that her daughters have left home and she’s sold her Gold Coast business, Samantha Murphy has volunteered to look after the family farm in Burrumba while her parents enjoy an extended overseas holiday. Though a world away from the life she has been leading since leaving home as a teenager, Sam quickly regains the rhythms of country living and considers making her return permanent. A passionate reunion with her high school boyfriend, Jack Cameron, cements the idea, but life seems reluctant to give them the second chance they both want as a deadly bushfire threatens to destroy everything they love.

Like the author, I was unfortunate enough to be surrounded by the 2019/2020 fires, but luckily I was never directly impacted thanks to the selfless work of the NSW Rural Fire Service who defended our town. Sam and Jack’s experiences of the fire ring true and Lane captures the heightened emotions of the event with sensitivity. I well remember the stress and anxiety as a thick pall of smoke darkened the sky while the fire front crept ever closer, as people from outlying areas sought shelter in our local halls, and as the showground filled with displaced pets and livestock. It was devastating to learn of homes and property destroyed, and even more so the lives tragically lost.

While there are many tense moments in Once Burnt, Twice Shy as the bushfire rages, the ‘second chance’ romance between Sam and Jack also has its complications with their renewed relationship marred by family drama. Both are divorced and carry baggage from their previous relationships, and both also have daughters who aren’t comfortable with their parent becoming involved with someone else. I thought Lane portrayed the issues that affected them authentically.

Despite the rather heavy, emotional themes within the novel, there are flashes of humour. I laughed aloud as Sam attempted to wrangle her mother’s recalcitrant Guinea fowl.

Once Burnt, Twice Shy is another engaging novel from talented author Karly Lane whose stories celebrate rural Australian communities, and its people.

Perfect summer read for me x I love a rural fiction, and I so appreciated that the protagonists are adults my age acting like people my age! I loved the characters of Sam and Jack, I loved their backstories and their chemistry (I’m only human) I loved the farm life I get to live vicariously through with a Karly Lane novel; the cattle, the horses, the guinea fowl…loved it all so much, but a huge part of it did make me feel like I know what it’s like to prepare for a bushfire, and it could certainly be too close for anyone who knows what it really is like to prepare for a bushfire x

Rural Romance ALERT!

This really is a romance book...with two likeable MC's Sam and Jack who were childhood sweethearts, gone their separate ways and reunited years later back in their rural hometown.

As adults they are now both divorced and have their own grown up kids when Sam returns to their hometown to house sit her parents farm while they're away. It is here they both, although now older become involved once more.

The two MC's are both really likeable, funny and hard working. They both get out on the farm, support one and other and deal with huge fires that threaten their community.

This is a really fabulous rural romance that isn't OTT and actually has normal, realalistic characters and situations. Well done Karly Lane I look forward to reading more of your books!

This book was sent to me by Allen and Unwin in exchange for an honest review thank -you.

Okay, so I have a couple of weeks to formulate a full review for this one... which is probably not a bad thing.

Lane has brought together her love of the land, and her animals with her passion for the countryside and it's beauty.. and safety.

While we were in the throes of horrific bushfires right across the country Lane has set a novel in the thick of that. Exploring the challenges and heroism of our fire services and the amazing nature of community spirit.

Loved it.

Samantha Murphy a divorced mother of two almost adult girls, she was a business woman who ran a store in Queensland. She moves back home to the family farm in rural Burrumba to house sit while her parents are away cruising on a holiday after leaving at the age of 18 years old as she craved for adventure at the time she was dating Jack Cameron he knew he wanted to be a farmer. When she returns she doesn't expect it to feel like home of wanting to return to live close by her family. There are the animals her horse who is now old, dogs, chickens and guinea fowl whose antics made laugh at the way Sam spoke to them, along with the cattle, farm dogs and horses.
Jack Cameron is the nearest neighbour to the Murphy farm and the man she once loved as teenager. He is now a divorced father of two teenage girls running a farm that was once his families. Her father had left instructions for Jack to check in on her if she needed help. He is also a volunteer fire fighter.
Sam and Jack find themselves opening up to each other with Sam explaining her reasons for leaving and Jack opening up about his feelings of when she left and both talking about the lives since she left as comes over often to help her with the farm. Sam and Jack slowly rinkle the love they once had. Then there is the threat of the bush fire raging towards town Jack find himself working non-stop but that doesn't stop him from worrying about Sam and the farm. Helps her prepare take her horse to showground and sends her to showground until it is safe. Karly Lane captures the reality of what is it like when a bushfire goes through a country town and how a community comes together to support each other as Jack and his crew go missing trying to save hisproperty which he loses.
There is her decision to return to sell her home to move back to give their relationship go this give Jack the idea to visit with he girls as well as on his own to meet her girls. Sam also finds her daughter out of soughts when she returns this also plays a role in the decision she makes encouranging her to move with her as she learns of her daughters pregnacy.

I enjoyed this book so much another fantastic read by Karly Lane can't wait for her next book.

This was my first Karly Lane book and safe to say I will be picking more of her books to read.
(Thank-you @allbookedout_with_mj for recommending this one)

I listened to this whole book or Audio and by far the best narration of a book I have come across yet and the narrator Sara Lynam brought every single character and scene to life.

This was touching, heartbreaking, romantic and humorous and it really felt like I was listening to a story being told about a friend, family or neighbour - characters were like people I know and the scenes were just so truthful and relatable.

I especially enjoyed the character Jenny (only a small snippet, but gee, we all know a Jenny haha!) and of course the bloody Guineafowls!
Overall, with every character, their personalities and traits matched their names perfectly and I remember just thinking “wow Karly” such a talent to be able to do this so so well!

The storyline of the catastrophic fires really hit home and took me back to 2015 Sampson Flat Bushfires that we had here in South Australia and was utterly heartbreaking and terrifying, yet the sense of community that was written around this was just perfect and so so true to us Aussies.

I was thankful to meet the author Karly at a recent book event - Love, Crime and Wine and if you haven’t already, I highly recommend picking up one of her books ☺️

In the summer of 2019/20, most of Australia perished in our worst bushfire season to date. To this day, communities are still rebuilding and people are still struggling. Karly Lane has dedicated her new novel to those heroes.

Sam Murphy and Jack Cameron were teenage sweethearts once upon a time. Now both with failed marriages, the pair reconnect when Sam returns home to house sit for her parents. However, soon the talk of their relationship takes a back burner when the small town of Burrumba is threatened by a bushfire.

Whilst Sam is safe from the danger, Jack is one of those firefighters who has selflessly put their lives on the line. This particular section is tense, terrifying and uncertain: just like what the populations of these areas experienced.

However, in the aftermath more issues arise that threatens their new found love for each other. Jack is left with structural damage and Sam returns home to the Sunshine Coast. They have a wonderful second chance- will everything work out so they can grab it with both hands?

𝐎𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐭, 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐲 is Karly's best work to date. You don't want to miss this one. Anything I want to say possibly won't give any justice at how wonderful, touching and memorable this is. Well done Karly!

𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗲 is another Aussie author I have fast become a fan of!
𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘁,𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝘆 is the second book I've read by this author and I honestly can't wait to read more!

I love when a landscape is so vividly described, the emotions so real and the characters just so endearing and Karly certainly captures all of this in her beautiful writing!

Sam Murphy returns from city life to take care of the family farm while her parents take a long earned break.

Coming home reunites Sam with teenage love, Jack who many years ago had his heart broken by Sam when she left town at eighteen.

Now both divorced, emotions are high when the two come back into each others lives and unresolved feelings are brought to the surface. Is there potential for a second chance at love between Sam and Jack?

Then catastrophic fires burn towards the farming community and Sam unfortunately has to evacuate her parents property but when Jack is reported missing, Sam fears the worst and prepares herself for losing the love of her life once again!

Definitely a recommended read! Grab yourself a copy as it's 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆!

Thank you so much @allenandunwin for the #gifted copy.

Karly Lane’s novels are always such a wonderful read, and this one was no doubting up there with her best. I loved the mix of emotions I felt as I read this story.

As I finished chapter nineteen I was in tears just like the books main character Sam... then as I started chapter twenty I paused several times letting out a breath which I didn’t realise I was holding... I was preparing myself for what was to come!

“Once Burnt, Twice Shy” is centred around Sam a country girl at heart who has returned from the glamorous city life to farm sit while her parents are off on a well earn holiday.

Upon her return she reunites with her childhood sweetheart Jack who like Sam is single following a divorce. Both have 2 daughters and both have never really let go of the spark they held for each other.

But there is a looming threat in the community as an uncontrolled bush fire is headed their way.

I really enjoyed the suspense within the story, the emotion, and the wonderful country feel.

A wonderful tribute to the Australian spirit and the resilience of our wonderful farming communities - the backbone of our country. Reading this book bought back the stark reminders of the horrendous 2019/20 bushfire emergency - reading through the lines bought back the images of the devastation and the loss of life - tears welling up in my eyes as I remember the images. Sam and Jack showcase how everyone pitches in and helps, from our legendary RFS (Rural Fire Service) - the life blood to every community, and to the farmers and their families helping each other out.
One of the best books I have read in a long time - many thanks Karly! Thank you for giving people a look into what it was like during those horrendous times and what our RFS sacrifice all the time. Average men and women that are the heroes of farming areas.

My teenage daughter bought me this book for Christmas. It is different to most books I usually read and I really enjoyed it. The outback setting amongst the bushfires was very real and insightful and it was obvious that the author had personal experience of rural communities going through this experience. The characters seemed very natural and it was easy to relay to them. I loved the resilience and determination of Sam and Jack, the two main characters. They faced lots of problems together including the devastation of the fires and the challenges of parenting teenage daughters. They faced these with persistence, positivity and innovation. I’m very greatful to have been introduced to a new author and look forward to reading more of Karla Lane’s books in the future.

I am always overjoyed to read the latest installment of Karly Lane's books and this was definitely no exception.

There was so much action, heartbreak, devastation, resilience, hope, and love in this book when Samantha Murphy returns home, newly divorced, to look after her parent's farm while they go on an around the world trip of a lifetime.

While her parents are gone, Sam works on the farm and rekindles a romance with her teenage love and neighbour, Jack Cameron, who is also divorced.

Devastation occurs when a bush fire threatens their town and everyone has to put their fire plans into action.

What does all this mean for Sam and Jack?

Guess you'll have to read the book to find out! You won't be sorry......

Once again, Karly has written a sensational book.

Returning to your home town to look after your parentsh property is just what Sam needed. But being divorced and leaving her adult children play into Sam’s thoughts continuously. Especially when Sam has a visit from Jack, her parents neighbour and her old teenage boyfriend.

Sam’s feelings are tested when a fire causes trouble, damage and no communication. But Sam is a strong woman.

Add in children and their dramas, Sam is going to need to draw on her inner strength.

A fantastic book that had me hooked from the beginning.

Once burn twice shy captures the very essence of life on the mid north coast of NSW following the devastating bushfires in the summer of 2019 - 2020. Her descriptions of both the people, the landscape and emotions are equal parts beautiful and heart breaking. I have read a few of Karly Lanes books and I didn’t want this one to end.

A heartwarming story of second chances, of loss and rebuilding, and of finally coming home. A solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 stars

Love the title, it refers to not only the romance but also hints at the bushfires in the story. Written during the recent horrendous bushfire season in Australia, this is an emotional insight into how devastating it can be when a simple wind change brings devastation to property and animals. It's also a terrific second-chance-at-love story, which is always lovely. Great reading for a lazy hot summer's afternoon.

A quick read by favourite author Karly Lane. Waited thru Covid for her new book and it was in NZ by Christmas.
Strong emotional plot especially with the fires that have been occurring rurally for the past two years.

Great to have slightly older, life experienced characters who have to work through different issues than those confronted with in early 20’s & 30’s.

Another fabulous read from Karly Lane. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to go through what all the communities affected by the bush fires went through. It would be terrifying and Karly has captured this perfectly. I could feel their pain and heartbreak. I loved reading Sam and Jacks story 💜

Karly has done it agin. Once Burnt, Twice Shy is a beautiful second chance love story that makes this book a wonderful summer read. On a deeper level, it's also a stark reminder of the reality of the fierce power of bushfires but the even more powerful spirit of community mateship and heroism of the rural fire brigade. This book is a testament to the summer of 2019/2020
