Blaze Morgan does not lead the life of a normal seventeen year old. For as long as she remembers, she has seen strange, white, mannequin-like beings. Scared of being locked away, she keeps her secret to herself until one day, at the scene of a gruesome accident, she sees how these beings are created. Blaze discovers she is part of an ancient Order of Watchers. They guard the earth against the Rapientium, or Raptors for short. They feed on human souls, and the shell that is left behind are the Taken. Blaze discovers a whole new magical world, and she is to be part of it. Something, though, lingers in the background. A prophecy of a girl born with fire in her eyes that will bring about the end of chaos, or the end of the world…
When the last rose withers, a great war will come.
Blaze is a 17 year old girl that has been able to see these strange, white, mannequin like beings for as long as she can remember.
She decides she needs to keep this “ability” a secret, because she’s scared she might be locked away; people will probably think she’s crazy.
That all changes when Blaze witnesses a car accident and sees how these beings (the Taken) are created. Apparently she’s not the only one that can see them?
Blaze discovers that she is part of an ancient organization, the Order of Watchers. They guard the earth against the Rapientium, evil beings that create the Taken.
Blaze discovers this whole new world of magic and she is supposed to be a part of it. And then there is this prophecy… about a girl that will either end chaos or bring about the end of the world? When the last rose withers, a great war will come…
Really enjoyed this book! And can’t wait for the sequel to see how it will continue. Loved Blaze, Dean and Clive and to see their growth throughout the book.
This was some pretty good writing, a very extended story with some well done and fleshed out characters. To be honest this isn't my type of story so I'm not going to be able to give it an adequate review and do it justice but Ormerod has done a pretty good job of telling her tale. I would definitely recommend to people who do like the sort of more modern fantasy in current times. It's a very complicated story and I can see where this could spans several books and not lose momentum. Even though this is not my particular genre I'm glad I found it in the Indie author takeover on Tik-Tok and wouldn't hesitate to read more by this author.
A page turner, where a young girl with secrets, comes of age. A turn of events reveals all. Will the bad guy, or girl rather, succeed in her quest? If you liked the movie Signs you'll enjoy this book
There are several different areas I would like to touch on, which resulted in the rating I have given this book.
First, I will start with what I liked. The overall story idea is good. A coming of age chosen one trope, with good vs evil. Evil in this instance are beings who take the souls of humans and leave a shell behind destined to be stuck on the plain without the ability to interact/move/be at rest; and good who are trying to rid the evil to release the shells from their state which can only be done by destroying the Raptor who caused it. There is magic in the form of spells and charms derived from Latin requiring focus and chants to wield; and some unusual powers and dream realm abilities which was neat.
The heroine learns her roll, there's a few surprises along the way and two incidents which need overcoming in this novel.
I'm going to move on to things I didn't like. For the first item, I will make a disclaimer this this issue is purely related to ME as a reader, with my background. I am Canadian, we generally follow the Queen's English. This story is written in another form of British dialect, which you commonly hear spoken, and many of us non Brits may hear it in some shows on BBC.
An example of this would be: "He was stood outside waiting" or "He was sat in the booth"
I found the language used continuously pulled me out of the story and difficult to follow because the grammar felt wrong. I think I would have been okay if the spoken parts in the book used that dialect, but the narration followed the more standard way, but I recognize that this will not be the experience of everyone reading, so it is only a small aspect affecting my enjoyment.
However, aside from that usage there were far too many typos. I can understand a few that slip through, especially when the typo word is a real word and therefore would be more difficult to pick up from a spell checker. We're all human and it happens. However, there were instances in this book where the typo was not a word, and there's really no reason it would not have been picked up in a basic editor for example a word inserted between another so "heI'llar" for example.
The most egregious error in my mind, and the one that ultimately moved this book from a 3 star to a 2 was the error regarding the MAIN title/one of the PRIMARY beings of the book. The book is titled Rapientium. That is how it is spelled. Throughout the first several instances of this word showing up in the book, that is the spelling we see. However, from just past 1/3 of the way through, all the way to the end of the book (with the exception of one other use) the spelling changed to Rapientum. I don't understand how an error like that can be missed, it bothered me, and every time I saw it I was pulled away from the story (I even went back to double check the title spelling, and that there were no other explanations of an alternate spelling, there is only the short form Raptor, which is explained)
In terms of content, for about 80% of the book, I felt that the characters lacked substance. I truly didn't know much about them. The book is written in the first person, but there was very little internal dialogue until the last 20% of the book. However, a great deal of information on their actions were provided. I knew every single meal the characters had, and all the work they did moving/organizing their apartment etc.. but very little to their emotional feelings/experiences.
We find a love interest, which occurs over a couple of days, and turns into full on love within weeks, to a month with basically nothing. We learn she thinks this boy is good looking, and there is eluding to being drawn to him, but that's it.. there's no lead up, then he kisses her, and then they are all of a sudden dating, and love one another.. with no reason why...
The main character did not feel believable; there was really no indication of shock, or dealing with everything that came her way, but again I think this stems from a lack of inner dialogue and really getting to know the drive behind the actions. It also felt like everything was just kind of handed out on a silver platter.. the areas of the story where there is tension or it is unknown where the story will lead didn't really make me feel worried, or leave me wondering because within a few pages the issue would start to resolve.
I almost did not finish the book, but I looked at a few other reviews which are higher than mine and decided I would complete and see if it righted itself, I wondered if I was reading a different version.
I'm happy to say that we saw some inner dialogue from the main character toward the end of the book which was good, the author explored trust more, and the actions made by the character made sense because there was a reason and context, vs the earlier parts of the book.
Overall, with a few more editing rounds, and a little more character depth/personal thoughts/feelings/experiences the story has the bones to be really good. I hope and encourage the author to keep writing, because she has solid ideas.
The fate of the world us in the hands of just one person and its one hell of a ride!
Rapientium is the story of Blaze, a typical 17 year old, living her best life with her best friend. She has two adoring parents and things are good. Except she has been hiding a secret since she was born. She can see things. White, figure things. Blaze has learned to accept this not so pleasant part of her life and has adapted, however her gift is greater than she could imagine. Blaze is thrown into a world of charms, combat and an ongoing battle of good versus evil, with her playing a most important and valuable role. This story follows Blaze’s discovery and acceptance of her legacy as a watcher, but maybe the greatest watcher there ever was. Sacrifices will be made and secrets uncovered, but if anyone can handle this, Blaze can!
This book has everything, magic, fight scenes , love, gay representation and a very honest account of mental health. As an already massive fan of Nicola’s work, she has done it again; developing endearing characters that you root for from the beginning. As with her Roxy series, there are clear nods to the authors personal life and attributes which make the stories come to life. You often need to remind our self that you are reading about characters on a page and not real life people. It’s hard to not become attached to these characters and celebrate their victories and that’s a credit to Nicola’s writing style.
No spoiler but there is a ‘to be continued’ and I can not wait for another instalment of a wholesome, kick ass story with strong characters and to know the fate of the world as we know it!
This book is perfect for YA, only one scene that was suggestive but appropriate for the target audience.
-Big thanks to the author for the free copy for the indie TBR takeover event-
For as long as she can remember, Blaze has been seeing strange white beings all around her that seem rather unthreatening. Afraid to be locked up in an asylum, she decides to keep it to herself. But when she witnesses a horrible incident and sees new white beings created before her eyes, things will take a turn. She will discover a new, hidden world in her life and the role she has to play in it. Between prophecies, revelations and trainings, Blaze will have no time left for her normal life.
The best thing about this book is probably how original it is. The whole fantasy world the author created simply blew my mind, I never would have expected it. It's super interesting and unique and I had a blast discovering it with Blaze. It gave me Shadowhunter vibes without being the same at all. Blaze was a relly fun character and I liked how realistic she was in her way of handling things. However, I thought that some moments were a bit too long and not very useful to the story, making the book feel slow, even if a lot happens in it. There is a lot of action and surprises in the book and it was really entertaining to read. Plot-twists I never would have expected blew up in my face and the romance was really cute and light, just the right amount of feelings in the book. I also really liked how Blaze's parents were involved in the story, along with her bestfriend. I feel like everything sped up at the end and I can't wait to see what the author is cooking up for the sequel because I need to know what's going to happen to all of them! Overall it was a very fun and original book and I really liked it.
I'd recommend for fans of the Shadowhunter books!
"There is always a price for things worth having."
So Blaze has seen these weird alien like creatures her entire life however she learns quickly that telling people makes them upset so she stopped saying anything, which I thought was really sad. In a life altering chain of events Blaze finds out she's not the only person to see these white figures. I enjoyed how Blaze grew as a character from a shy girl to someone learning she has more inside than she realised and working hard to improve herself. I also liked how the magic was more hard won spells and charms instead of a big flashy magic system, it felt more realistic. I felt the pace was slowed down by the detailed descriptions of everyday tasks and I did have to go over the reason for the mum's issues, it didn't have the impact on my mind that I thought it should have had. Overall it was an engaging take of friendship, betrayal and finding inner strength that I enjoyed. Interested to see the next instalment in Blaze's adventure.
17 year old blaze see white figures that none else can see that she knows of. After a nasty car accident witness by herself and her friend Clive she confine in him and tells him about the white figures she been seeing all her live. The true friend Clive is he helps her find out why she see them. Blaze discovers that she part of an ancient order of watchers which her grandmother was also a part of. So the training of being a watcher is all blaze can think about unless she finds out about a prophecy about her that she end the chaos or the end of the world……..
Started off a little slow in the beginning. But it was a wonderful refreshing read from Vampires, werewolves etc. Here Nicole has created a world where Watchers fight to defend humans from the Rapientium who kill and feed of human souls. Leaving the human as what's known as a Taken. Doomed to wander the earth forever as a mindless creature. Was is coming and one girl alone can either save the human race or destroy everything and everyone! I cannot wait to read book 2!
I absolutely loved reading this book. It has action, it has friendship and it have love. I absolutely love the character development of Blaze. She goes from shy and keeps to herself to a bit more outgoing. The friendships she develops in the book are just sweet and great too. I loved that this book is different than any paranormal book i have read. You have these incredibly dangerous beings and an organization fighting them. This book keeps you on your toes! I cant wait to read more in the series!
Wow what a ride. It's hard to find the words to describe what I've just read, it was exhilarating! This is one of those amazing stories, that would make a great movie series. This is about a teenager who experiences paranormal events, and feels so all alone, isolated. Then suddenly she finds that she's not alone. There is a whole host of others. And they have formed a school of sorts with training to combat the evil that plagues the earth. Just know that this is a series. I put it up there were Twilight !
This first installment of a projected paranormal fantasy series chronicles the adventures of a 17-year-old woman as she unlocks the meaning of the mysterious, spooky white figures she has seen since she was a child. Ormerod's narrative voice captures Blaze’s excitement and apprehension as she unlocks more and more secrets. Themes of romance, friendship, and family make it a sweet read and the plot is quite a page turner! It does end on a cliffhanger so I look forward to reading the next installment!
Aside from a multitude of grammar and punctuation issues that I couldn't help but notice due to my own editing mind, that did NOT distract from the marvelous world, story and characters that Nicola spun together. She created a great story that kept me turning the pages and I was on edge through all the turmoil and shocked by the twists and realizations. I can't wait for the next book to find out what happens!
Amazing Great pace all Nicolas books are Story full of Twists nearly throw the book at one point lol I cried too So emotionally attached to this story now such an amazing story 100% recommend Couldn’t put it down Can’t wait for the next one
