A heartwarming cozy mystery series about losing everything, taking a chance, and starting again.
After suffering a personal tragedy Abby Sullivan buys a huge old seaside mansion she has never even seen, packs up her life in San Francisco, and moves to Holiday Bay Maine, where she is adopted, quite against her will, by a huge Maine Coon Cat named Rufus, a drifter with her own tragic past named Georgia, and a giant dog with an inferiority complex named Ramos. What Abby thought she needed was alone time to heal. What she ended up with was, an inn she never knew she wanted, a cat she couldn't seem to convince to leave, and a new family she'd never be able to live without.
In book 17 in the series, Abby joins Colt as he investigates the death of a local man who died after eating pudding dosed with poison during a community dinner. Was the man targeted or was the poison in the pudding a random act set into motion by a madman intent on murder?
Meanwhile, Thanksgiving is only a few days away and several guests who've visited the inn in the past return to spend the holiday with Abby, Georgia, and the rest of the Inn at Holiday Bay family. In addition to the return cast, a couple is looking for their runaway granddaughter and another is trying to make the best of things after tragedy struck his family.
Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home. Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

I chose this one for the Treacherous Treats square on Holiday Book Bingo and it was perfect. The mayor is at the annual community dinner when he keels over into his pumpkin bisque, dead. Who would kill such a beloved community leader?
Was it just me or was this a super short book? I mean, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it but it felt like it was over as soon as it began and a big part of that was the mystery part of the plot was overshadowed by the cozy side of the plot. What I mean is, the mystery of who killed the mayor started out as as a banger but ended up being just a few scenes here and there, usually with Colt telling Abby he doesn't have much to go on. Then Abby has an AHA! moment, figures the whole thing out and it's all wrapped up neatly. Meanwhile, on the cozy side, you have Annabelle's trip, a missing teenager and a whole lot of detail surrounding decorating the inn for the holidays. All of this doesn't make for a bad book; I love this series and enjoy any time I can spend in Holiday Bay, it's just that I felt this was more a cozy novella with mystery elements.
So if you're looking for a feel-good cozy community holiday read with a dash of mystery thrown in, this will be perfect for you. But really, it's just another enjoyable trip to Holiday Bay.
"Poison in the Pudding (The Inn at Holiday Bay #17)" by Kathi Daley is finally a Thanksgiving themed book in this series that isn't essentially a rewrite of the previous Thanksgiving themed books in the series. There was some similar activities they talk about doing, but that's traditions for you. The story was more unique but focused more on the story than the mystery.
We get a missing teen as the additional drama part of the story. That's resolved quickly with a little detail, it's a secondary story. The main mystery was around the death of the mayor. I was thinking that was the direction it would end up. There was a smidge of an investigation on our main character's part. Ultimately, the killer confessed when confronted with facts by the cops.
Good Thanksgiving cozy mystery. It did get a bit more into Christmas than Thanksgiving. Kind of blew over Thanksgiving after talking about it for a few chapters.
This book read like it was written by a computer program. It was like the main character names and the descriptions of the inn and local events were dropped into a formulated program. It had no real feeling or even much of a story to get interested in. The author is churning out to many in a short period of time and it shows.
Another great addition to this series set in Maine. Holiday Bay seems to be a charming community on the coast of Maine with friendly residents who seem to welcome new residents and tourists alike. Colt has a tough case to solve in this book and Abby does what she can by listening to neighbors and store owners as she runs her errands. An inn full of visitors, Thanksgiving activities, friends and staff who are family and a mystery that will keep you guessing until the end made for a perfect afternoon read.
Poison in the Pudding is the seventeenth book in Kathi Daley’s heartwarming The Inn at Holiday Bay series. Every time I pick up one of Ms. Daley’s books, I know I’m in for a treat, and I’ve never been disappointed. The setting in this series is charming, and the well-developed characters are three-dimensional, compassionate, and caring. The storyline flows smoothly, and the book is a clean read with a perfect blend of mystery, heartache, joy, and caring with a touch of sweet romance. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.
After Abby Sullivan lost her husband and their infant son in a tragic accident, she moved to Holiday Bay, Maine, opened the Inn at Holiday Bay, made a new life for herself, and found a home and a family. Georgia Carter, who has also overcome obstacles in her life, is the inn’s talented cook/baker and manager, and her dog, Ramos, live with Abby, Rufus, a Maine Coon, and Molly, a terrier mix, in a cottage located on the property. Georgia’s cooking show, Cooking with Georgia, is doing quite well. Jeremy Slater, who lives in the inn’s basement apartment with his young niece, Annabelle, is a valuable asset who helps with the inn’s day-to-day operations.
When the town’s well-respected mayor becomes violently ill and dies while attending a town-sponsored Thanksgiving dinner, Police Chief Colt Wilder is perplexed. The coroner determines that Mayor Wallace ingested poison, which caused his death, but Colt is unable to come up with either a motive or a suspect. Abby, who is helping with the investigation, and Colt become concerned that if the mayor wasn’t the intended victim, there might be a deranged killer in town. Abby, Georgia, and several returning guests help an elderly couple staying at the inn search for their missing fifteen-year-old granddaughter.
Abby is helping Colt with the case of a local man who died at a community event after eating poisoned pudding. Was it intentional or a prank gone bad? Was he even the target?
I've really enjoyed this series and this book is a prime example of why. The book's well-written with wonderful characters and relationships that show family isn't always blood. Kathi keeps the series fresh with each book as good, if not better, than the last. The mystery will keep you on your toes and guessing while the book will draw you in and keep you hooked. I'm looking forward to the next book. I highly recommend both book and series which is best when read in order.
Having read every book in this series, Poison in the Pudding was a disappointment. I struggled to even give it 3 stars and should probable reduce it to a 1 star. There was none of the anticipation of resolving of issues, figured out who done it pretty quickly and the characters were not endearing. Sorry, but I'd pass on this one and hope the next one is better, If not, that's the end for me.
The well-liked mayor of Holiday Bay dies suddenly during a community fundraiser dinner. Many people from the town are in attendance including Chief of Police Colt Wilder. Georgia and Abby had been busy cooking food all morning. Autopsy reports showed the cause of death was poisoning. How could one man be targeted in a large room filled with others eating and drinking the same things? Why would someone want to take the Mayor's life? These are puzzling questions that must be answered to solve a case that took place just before Thanksgiving when hoiday celebrations are beginning to take place all around Holiday Bay. Also in this book, a couple comes to the Inn because they are searching for their lost teenaged granddaughter, Annabelle goes to Spain to spend time with her mother, returning guests as well as new ones get into the Christmas spirit with annual activities like sleigh rides and tree trimming.
This is the 17th book in this series and I am still enjoying the books. Reading them is like catching up with friends you haven't seen in a while and finding out what is now going on on their lives. As usual, great plots and wonderful characters.
Amazon synopsis: n book 17 in the series, Abby joins Colt as he investigates the death of a local man who died after eating pudding dosed with poison during a community dinner.
I really love this series the next book gets better as I read the next book!!!!! Abby and the town are getting ready for the community Thanksgiving dinner. The mayor Wallace has come in the community center to enjoy the activities going on as the meet and greet gets under way before the big dinner. As every one is seated to eat they start with a soup, as the major is talking and eating his soup, suddenly he stands and gets sick and then ends up face down in his bowl of soup!!!! What the neck happened everyone is thinking and chief of police Colt is there to take charge. What happened? Was it his heart or something else? The dinner is over, all the food is gathered and the investigation begins!!!! Now you have to get this book to find out the details!!!! You won't be disappointed!!!!!
1. Death of the Mayor. Murder or natural causes? 2. Missing runaway teen. 3. Annabelle is anxious about going to Spain to meet with her Mom’s new beau. 4. Annie (Abby’s sister) may stay at the Inn for Christmas! 5. Tons of Christmastime events at the Inn and in town.
Like all previous 16 books, most of the mysteries have been solved, but also like the previous, the next book will have answers to the rest.
Next book is the last of the 18 book series. The Inn at Holiday Bay: Lantern in the Lighthouse Book 18 will be available on February 22, 2022.
Next book I’m going to read is another one from a Kathi Daley series, because I’ve enjoyed this series so much. Next is book 1 of 9 in Cottage on Gooseberry Bay - “Halloween Moon”
The Inn at Holiday Bay quickly became one of my favorite series. I love the setting and characters. Friendships are easily formed when guests check in, several later relocating to the area. This book will appeal to fans of the television series, Murder She Baked, based on books by Joanne Fluke. The mayor, in particular, reminded me of that series.
Besides a terrible tragedy for the town, the Inn family is concerned when one of their own may be forced to move far away. They must remain strong and hope for the best.
As always, when guests check in at the Inn, there is another mystery or mission to follow through on. A warm, family friendly cozy read to enjoy.
This book is awesome. I love this whole series and each book seems even better than the last.
Abby and her boyfriend, Colt, who is the local law, are working together to solve a murder that took place in plain sight at a community dinner party.
Thanksgiving is the themes in this book and Abby's Inn is hopping with guests for the upcoming holiday. She and Georgia, her business partner, are busy keeping the inn the wonderful place that it is known to be, but they always take the time to help out when their guests have problems, so when a couple needs help tracking their runaway granddaughter, Abby jumps right in.
Load of feels and fun in this book.I loved every page.
When a sudden death occurs, Abby works with Colt and other friends to uncover the facts surrounding this case. I would love to visit or live in the charming, tourist town of Holiday Bay. This community comes together to celebrate holidays - Thanksgiving and Christmas in this book. There is a theme of second chances in this series and in most of Mrs. Daley’s stories. I love the way she writes in a continuing saga fashion with hints and clues to stories in the future (and red herrings). I love that not all questions are resolved in each book. I enjoy the character development and the introduction of new characters.
I'm continually drawn back to Holiday Bay (how I wish it was real). Abby, Georgia, Jeremy & Annabelle have created a family & it's Thanksgiving at the Inn. A community dinner ends in sadness (Abby figured that mystery out). Annabelle is off to Spain for a visit with her mom! And a family - possibly two - has a reunion.
Once again, Kathi Daley has woven the tales of residents and guests of the Inn at Holiday Bay into a can't put it down plot with twists and turns. With each book in the series, I'm more invested in the lives and characters that come together at the Inn. Read this series from Book One on and don't be disappointed!
Back at The Inn at Holiday Bay and its Thanksgiving, the Inn is full and Abby with her staff are busy getting ready for the forthcoming holiday season.
When the Mayor dies suddenly, Abby's boyfriend local policeofficer Colt is heading up the investigation, did someone murder him?
I really enjoyed the book but felt it was a little short and rushed this time, but it didn't stop my enjoyment of the book. Books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters. Can't wait for the next book to be released.
It just ended. There was a lot of repeating dialogue and things are told in the past and skimmed over as already happened. The mystery is solved but there’s not a lot of closure on it, almost an afterthought. This series has really deteriorated in the later books. This one is set during the week of thanksgiving into December and the holiday festivities. I find it really lazy and disappointing writing that Annie and Abby finally take a giant step in repairing their relationship after 16 other books and we don’t get any storyline there.
Holidays and family. That’s the meaning of the season. Mystery, death, missing people. Parties, tree cutting, and Santa. The joy of the Holiday Bay series is all of the previously listed. I love joining Abbie and friends in their celebrations, investigations, and joy. When the mysteries are solved, you still have good friends celebrating together and a hint of what’s to come. I always find myself anxiously waiting for the next book.
Kathi Daley continues to intrigue and entertain the reader with her cozy mysteries. I love this series specifically as it is set in small-town New England which is where I am from and currently live. The characters are engaging and they draw you into the story. The mystery is light and I absolutely love the inn with all the holiday celebrations. I look forward to the next book in this series.
Good mystery as preparation for Thanksgiving and Christmas
Daley delivers another great installment in this series. The characters and their relationships continue to grow even as she adds more characters. Plus the murder and other mysteries in town and brought by visitors to the inn piques the reader’s interest in solving them. And the whole holiday context just adds to the enjoyment of a good read.
When the mayor in town dies during a party and it looks like he's been poisoned, Abby is on the case with her boyfriend Colt. The Inn celebrates Thanksgiving and heads into the Christmas season. Grandparents show up to search for a missing granddaughter and other guests come and go, while Abby continues to help out with the investigation. Just a nice, relaxing cozy mystery. I love a good low-stress book.
But I think the books are shorter. Still a fun little confection - Hallmark Christmas movie with an unexpected death thrown in. so many friends to catch up with in each new book!
The body is the mayor’s. The family situation to be resolved is a missing teen granddaughter. And Abby and Annie to spend some time together No historical story this time, but we have hints there will be one in the next book
This is a series that I really enjoy reading. In this series the sleuth is Abby and she is really good at it as she is also a mystery writer. This was is about Della, making a production about bringing her butterscotch pudding to the community center and someone one puts something in it. It is a very interesting story with a surprising ending.
I have enjoyed this series but this book didn't live up to the rest. There are too many characters to keep straight. I figured out the murderer fairly quickly. There was little depth to the story; it was too predictable. And it felt like a gooey Christmas TV movie.
This book starts with a murder, so we have something a little different from some of the other cases. The same wonderful characters, with Abby and Colt working together to solve the mystery. And then the mystery takes a surprise turn. Another great adventure from Kathi Daley.
I read through this story quickly. I enjoy reading at night so I'm not disappointed when I had almost immediately figured out the mystery. I like the characters in this series very much. They seem real and interesting. Good read, your time is not wasted in this book.
Thanksgiving community dinner gets off with the mayor getting violently sick and dying. Colt and Abby do their sleuthing and without too much time discover the culprit. Lots of prep work for Christmas at the inn found me snoozing as the book spends too much time on details written in previous books. Zzzz
It's the towns annual Thanksgiving dinner but it never got beyond the soup course as the towns beloved mayor fell face first in his soup., dead. Changes are happening at the Inn, they have a missing teenager, and no idea who would poison the mayor.
Another busy holiday at The Inn at Holiday Bay. A suspicious death, a missing teen, an absent Annabelle, and a full house. Never a dull moment for the crew, but it always works out in the end.
