Prix Goncourt en 1921, pour la première fois accordé à un auteur noir (le sous-titre a disparu des éditions récentes).
Cette fois-là, le jury Goncourt s'est grandi, en surmontant les préjugés de l'époque (instantanément révélés par les réactions subséquentes), en résistant à la charge anti-coloniale du texte et en reconnaissant sa qualité littéraire évidente.
L'alliage d'une sensibilité "africaine" avec un français littéraire hautement maîtrisé produit un style tout à fait original. L'intrigue, minimale, laisse place aux descriptions de la nature - à l'amble - et à l'étude de mœurs - par petites touches.
