Darker Parker

Rate this book
As the year progresses, Conan finds himself caught between staying in the Big City and leaving. He is still the socially awkward, quiet, philosophical dandelion that he was when he first arrived, but something in him has altered. The world hasn’t changed, but his life has. He has made new friends and fell in love, but will they be enough to get rid of the Dark Thoughts? Will Parker, Freddie, and Zev convince him to stay? And will he be able to free Parker from his own dark past? A story that highlights the beauty, the cruelness, and the rawness of reality.

“The universe is incredibly big, and humans tragically small, but the world is ours.”

Good writing, it definitely keeps you engaged and the emotions are real.
I gave it low rating because it literally left me depressed this is a bad ending book… I guess 😂
I came to read the sequel in hopes of a different ending that doesn’t reflects most people reality but the author went straight into keeping it as real as fucking possible. But oh well that’s the ending I got and I’m fine with it. Just that now I have to read a happy book 😂 😂
*btw it was confirmed by the author that this is the last book in the series!

I can confidently say I haven’t cried this much over a book since If He Had Been With Me. Darker Parker is a masterful continuation of the series, with writing as poignant and poetic as the first instalment. I.J. Hidee’s ability to delve into the complexities of human struggles, pain, and suffering is unparalleled, creating a narrative that is as devastating as it is beautiful.

The ending—despite feeling like my heart had been run through a shredder—was raw, real, and deeply moving. While I desperately hoped for a happy resolution, I can’t deny that the tragic, bittersweet conclusion made the story more relatable and authentic. The depiction of suffering, and the eventual acceptance of it, was so eloquently written that it stirred profound emotions in me and, I’m sure, many other readers.

The bond between the four friends was another highlight of this book. Watching their struggles, glimpsing into their lives, and being a part of their intertwined stories was a deeply immersive experience. The blurb didn’t exaggerate when it promised a story exploring reality's beauty, cruelty, and rawness. Each character’s journey touched on a different facet of the human condition, from grief to resilience, and Conan’s strength after Parker’s accident was especially moving.

However, I can’t give this book a perfect five stars for one reason: the pacing of Conan’s past trauma. While its inclusion added layers to his character, its reveal felt rushed, coming too early in the book. The aftermath of this revelation, especially Parker’s reaction, felt underexplored. It was brought up frequently through Parker’s worries, but once the truth came to light, the narrative didn’t give enough space to unpack its emotional weight.

That said, I.J. Hidee’s talent for capturing raw emotion and exploring how pain and longing affect people is nothing short of breathtaking. The way the author portrayed the ripple effects of loss, love, and suffering is both haunting and beautiful.

I would recommend Darker Parker a dozen times over, even knowing the emotional toll it takes. It’s a story that stays with you, reminding you of the resilience of the human spirit and the complexities of the heart.

Wow, I haven't read a book that affected me this much in an awfully long time. A lot of people complain about how it ends, but to me it was so fucking real and raw, it was perfect. I haven't cried so much in my life. I keep going back and rereading those last couple of chapters.
