Kids are on a mission to make our Earth a better, safer, happier place, and you can join in! Every day, we see a problem we would like to fix. A piece of rubbish in a green, grassy park. Plastic water bottles buried in the sand at the beach. A garbage bin overflowing onto the street. A skinny, stray dog. A homeless person on a cold day. These problems seem impossible for one person to change. But we can fix them, if we each do our part – one step at a time.
This practical guide is designed to empower kids to make changes in their lives to help make a difference in the world. Filled with information, ideas and activities, and interspersed with features on amazing children around the world, this book shows kids how to:
Avoid single-use plastics Throw a plastic-free party Make a compost bin and reduce waste Start a herb garden Grow bee-friendly flowers Learn about where their food comes from Be kinder to others, share and donate Kids are on a mission to make our earth a better, safer, happier place.
This is one of those educational fun books not only for the kids but for us adults who find documentaries and articles way too intimidating and tiresome.
The book talks about plastic and how to deal with it, what we can do to recycle or replace it with.
The book highlights kids and organisations which are actively involved in the process.
I never knew I use this much plastic everyday!
And ah the recipes for personal care. Love the practical, easy guides!
I love how the book gives practical easy tips on recycling clothes, how not to waste much on it.
And then there's this part on waste recycling and how to handle waste.
The kids mentioned in the book are doing too much while the rest of us are like we are and we can.
Can we be we are and we can on this front as well and learn something from the kids instead of leading them to follow our steps of ruining our planet?
Yes, no matter what it is every small step counts, every small change matters.

Did you know there are more plastic flamingos in the world than real ones? (p.21)
You Can Change the World is a well-written and practical guide, aimed at middle-grade aged children, to educate themselves and take action for a sustainable future. While not explicitly stated, the book embraces the concept of "Think Global, Act Local", and provides numerous suggestions for ways that children can both reduce their own negative impact on the environment and encourage others to do likewise. The books covers a wide range of subject matter, including reducing use of plastics, ethical and environmentally friendly clothing choices, recycling, food waste, energy, electricty and water usage and conservation, animal activism and acts of kindness. Most chapters feature a short biography or Q&A with a young champion in that particular area, showcasing what amazing things children can achieve, but also making clear how all children can embrace these principles. The book is illustrated throughout with colourful drawings in the naïf style. Chapters are also illustrated and bordered in different colours, helping effectively differentiate the information for younger readers. A short section at the end of the book suggests group activity ideas to embrace concepts discussed in the book. There is also a comprehensive resources list, including many useful website addresses. My only disappointment while reading You Can Change the World is that, while the author Lucy Bell and many of the featured environmental champions are Australian, the book is clearly aimed at an American audience. Spellings, terminology and measurements are all according to US norms, and virtually all the websites listed in the resources section are US-based. I would love to see an Australian or even a more globally-relevant edition published in the future. My thanks to the author, Lucy Bell, Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this title.
This is a really inspirational book with good tips to start reducing your own ecological footprint and to make the world a little bit better. I think it is worth a read both by children and adults!
I received an e-galley from Andrews McMeel Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’m always looking for great teaching resources and kid-friendly informational texts for my students. I’ve read a lot of great picture books that introduces tips and ideas for how readers can help make the world a better place. YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD is a great guide with a lot more information, details, and tips for that change to take place - including different sections including plastic, food, gardening, and activism. I was also pleasantly surprised to find a chapter on acts of kindness in the guide - the idea that change should come from within as well. The guide gives simple and clear explanations and instructions for what to do and what not to do. It also features young inspiring individuals around the world who are already making changes - as well as organizations and groups that are also committed to different important causes. It’s a great book to use when guiding young readers to what makes them feel inspired and how they may want to help make the world a better place.
I will definitely be putting this on my classroom wish list as a classroom resource.
Excellent book for kids on simple ways in which they can get involved with changing their world, one step at a time. There are interviews with kids who are already inspirational in the ways they are affecting their world (and ours). There are recipes and activities to help make your home a better place for the world, including growing bee-friendly flowers. This book is full of practical and useful ideas. It is also full of information and trivia about the world in which we live and how we can make sure it stays a viable place to live. This book offers simple ideas that kids, teenagers and adults will all love and find simple to put in to practise. Kids will love this book. Families will love this book and the World will love this book after your kids have had a good crack at it!
You Can Change the World: The Kids' Guide to a Better Planet is a small book packed with a powerful message. This book shows children that anyone can make a difference in the world. It is colorfully illustrated and packed with information, ideas, and activities for everyday sustainability.
This book is truly a wonderful and informative resource for children and adults alike. I personally had no idea that I used so much plastic! There are so many small things that we can do everyday to keep our planet thriving and beautiful.
I recieved a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Kids are worried about the world they are inheriting and they are right to be! The rise in eco-activism by young people is heartening but for many kids the most troubling question is what can one person do?
Here is a whole book of answers for that question! And even better is that the suggestions and activities listed here are completely do-able for kids. Best described as a catalog of ideas, the book is divided into 8 topics including plastics, food, energy, ethical and environmentally friendly clothing and more. In the introduction, Bell reminds kids that one person can make a difference, that the world can't be changed in a day and you don't have to do everything at once. Readers are advised to pick a topic that is of greatest interest to them and just get started.
Each section contains easy to do, practical suggestions that CAN be done by one kid. Background information is provided, Did You Know Facts, and even recipes for useful personal and household items. The text is straight-forward, easy to follow and understand and encouraging. Including in each section is a short biography of a young activist working to make a difference in that area.
A list of resources and websites is included in the back matter.
This is an absolute treasure for libraries, schools and personal collections. Perfect for individual, class, or group activities this engaging book will provide just the information concerned kids are looking for and gives them the tools to start attacking the mess adults have made of the world. Librarians - buy two if you can as this is going to get extensive use!
Most kids today are aware that Planet Earth is in trouble due to man-made problems. But the question young people today have is what can they do about it. They are, after all, kids. This book will give good answers to their questions and concrete examples of ways each person can help make the world a better place for the environment. After a short introduction, eight chapters follow: Plastic; Ethical and Environmentally Friendly Clothing; Waste; Food; Gardening and the Outdoors; Energy, Electricity, and Water; Animal Activism; and An Act of Kindness. There are also sections with Group Activities and Resources at the end of the book. Each chapter is filled with great ideas to help the world such as Throwing a Plastic-Free Party or Start Your Own Outdoor Garden, quick tips like which plants will attract good bugs, recipes for things like making your own toothpaste, and short interviews with young people who are making a difference right now such as ten-year-old Felix Montefiore who makes environmentally-safe T-shirts or nine-year-old Ruby the Climate Kid. The book is beautifully designed with great graphics, easy-to-read fonts, and attractive colors and illustrations. Author Lucy Bell uses language that is kid-friendly without every talking down to her young audience. The style is breezy and will hold readers’ interest. This wonderful book should be in every school library and classroom. Kids can go a long way toward changing the world for the better, and this is a good step in the right direction. I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
You Can Change the World offers tangible changes children can make or suggest to their parents to make a difference in the environment. Simple steps like using a stainless steel water bottle rather than a water bottle or throwing plastic-free birthday parties can reduce the amount of plastic in the world.
You Can Change the World clearly gives examples of humans effects on the environment without being preachy. Interspersed with the simple changes children can make are features on individuals who have made a difference in the world. The features are fun and very interesting, like the story of the sisters Amy and Ella Meek who “started the organization Kids Against Plastic to teach people about the impact single-use plastics have on the environment.”
Colorful illustrations help to keep this serious topic light in addition to providing some line breaks through a book packed with tips and facts. The facts are easy to digest and some (there are more plastic flamingos in the world than real flamingos) are downright sad.
Children and parents won’t find any new groundbreaking ideas to change consumption but this is a solid beginning guide on the small changes that can be made in everyday life. I personally found that the composting and food usage chapter was the most educational for my family in addition to some of the simple cleaning recipes using non toxic ingredients. You Can Change the World is appropriate for children 8-12 but even younger kids can grasp some of the simple recommendations.
Disclaimer: I received this book for review in exchange of my honest opinion.
This book is everything I wanted in a book about the climate crisis we are in and about how we can do small changes to help the world - and this book is for kids and it does a great job at explaining things in short simple terms. It does an even better job at being inspiring!
My main issue with it was that most of the data and statistic are US-centered, of course. But what I loved is that the people who are already doing great things to change the world were from all over the world - and those kids had some bright ideas to help our planet!
Great introduction for kids about various aspects of the current environmental movement. This includes, but is not limited to, different parts of the "zero/low waste" philosophy, even if they're not labeled as such in the book. I only wish people would stop promoting the DIY coconut oil toothpaste recipe! I was especially surprised to find it in a book for kids. Otherwise, great introductory information on pressing topics, fortified with concrete examples of kids making a difference in their communities and the world at large.
This book has some great ideas about how kids can help save the planet and it's written in such an appealing format. I almost, almost could give it 5 stars.
The only thing that keeps me from doing so is that the book isn't accessible for everyone. Some tips are big asks, especially for kids who don't live in a high socioeconomic bracket.
But the sections on conserving energy, on recycling, and on composting? Fabulous stuff.
This was such a fun and informative book for really people of any age not just children. It was beautifully written and the illustrations throughout were great. I loved that it was chock-full of activities to start on a path to better take care of our planet.

I think this book would be a great one to add to any science lesson. It can easily be adapted to fit into a students life inside and outside the classroom. Within the book students are presented with every day issues they may have already encountered or ones that they will eventually come across.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a great book for both children and adults to read. It tackles different problems that we are experiencing worldwide because of our ignorance and apathy in taking care of our planet. I loved all the anecdotes from different children all over the world who are environmental activists and an inspiration as such a young age. I hope more people are able to read this because I know everyone will get something from this book. I also like the idea of putting tips on how to do this and that since it's a great starting point for everyone. And I can really feel the author's passion to spread awareness and help change the world by starting with ourselves.
You Can Change the World by Lucy Bell is a great classroom resource. The book goes through eight different sections on how we (kids) can become more environmentally friendly. The book is easy for students to follow along and read. Also, the illustrations are very engaging. I like how the book is broken up into sections so the new information doesn't feel overwhelming. I can definitely see myself using this in science lessons no matter what grade level as it has large variety of knowledge in many different sections of being environmentally friendly. This would also work well with summer camps looking for fun STEM ideas and activities. Overall, I enjoy this book and can see myself using it in the classroom.
You Can Change the World by Lucy Bell is a wonderfully informative resource for children (and adults!) who want to make a difference in the world and reduce negative impact on the earth. I liked that the book was broken down into manageable sections that could be tackled at different times and I appreciated that the book presented a balance of factual information, manageable steps for action, and examples of children who have done things to make a difference. This book makes it realistic and non-intimidating for kids to make changes in their lives while receiving inspiration from stories of children who have already done so.

Lots of great facts, nice illustrations. It's a great guide for getting started on making the earth a cleaner, greener place to live.
I like that it's broken down into sections. The way it's broken down makes it easier to tackle one task at a time and it doesn't seem overwhelming and leaving you wondering where to start. Would be a great book for schools and libraries alike, and though it's listed as children's nonfiction, it would be a good book for adults who want to know more but don't like wordier books and articles.
There was a lot of text on some pages, making it feel a bit cramped, but overall, 4/5 for a job well done!
You Can Change the World The Kids' Guide to a Better Planet Lucy Bell is an awesome guide for kids and families looking to make a difference. The book is filled with facts about how everyday things harm our environment, as well as calls to action to address them and be a better global citizen. I love the DIY projects that are given here, which would be fun projects to try with your kids to get them involved in living a green lifestyle. There are also sections that highlight kids around the world who are making an impact on important issues, which is very inspirational. Many thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the advance review copy.
“The one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act, hope is everywhere.”
WOW! You Can Change the World is such a cool and informative book. Firstly, I was not expecting so much information! Not only did I learn a new fact on EVERY single page, I also learned what I could do to help the earth and as it turns out, there are many things you can do every day to make a difference! The illustrations in You Can Change the World are beautiful. I love all the color and it will surely keep kids engaged. This is a book everyone needs!
*Thank you #NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing.
You Can Change the World by Lucy Bell A fabulous user-friendly book on changes we can all do to make the planet a healthier place and to ward off climate change. Lots of very practical tips and solutions supplied by children from around Australia and the World. A book I would love to see in every school and public library. If you want to make a difference then this book has tips on real ways you can make a difference. Highly recommend reading for children to adults.
You Can Change the World gives so many examples of environmentally friendly practices that I was surprised in a really positive way. From young activists, through pointing out the problem to the very solution recipes included. There’s nothing to add, the books covers all topics connected with saving our planet. All showed in a really reader friendly was with lovely graphics. We need more books like this one! Five stars from me!
