Even the most innocent among us have secrets we would rather keep hidden. It’s the ones that escape that can be the most deadly.

When a long-haul trucker, lost on his route, narrowly misses a hitchhiker wandering in the center of the road, he scrambles to reach the fallen figure. However, it doesn’t take long to realize that the young woman he almost killed is not a hitchhiker and that something more sinister lurks in Lake Pines.

Constable Simon Phillips and his team begin to investigate the suspicious appearance of the mystery woman when he discovers his old boss, and newest member of the National Human Trafficking task force is taking over the case.

With more than one life on the line, Simon reluctantly relinquishes control of the investigation while he considers the ramifications of their changing friendship.

Amid the changes to her work and personal life after the global pandemic, Doctor Kerry Dearborne sets out on a quest for information that only threatens to bring her and her family closer to danger. And her father’s words of warning are no longer an echo in her head.

As the three friends come to terms with the way their lives have changed, they realize that some secrets are better left buried while others need to be driven into the light. The test will be deciding which is which.

I have to say that this book is my favourite in this series and Abbott’s ability to consistently allow her characters to grow coupled with her ability in coming up with new and fresh problems for them to solve, yields as always for Abbott a fantastic gripping mystery novel filled with intrigue , the pandemic included- great job.

”Deadly Past”, the seventh installment in the Lake Pines Mystery Series begins with a powerful punch, a dark and deadly secret has been buried. From the very beginning the plot begins to thicken with a twist at every corner imaginable, the reader engaged, unaware where these twists and turns may lead. It’s an Abbott speciality in all of her books in this series. This particular book I read in a single day.

I know that the crows cawing towards the end of the book signifies danger is lurking in the horizon and I am hoping there is another book to this series. Each chapter keeps you yearning to read on. A must read book! An outstanding series!

Post pandemic life in Lake Pines brings three friends to the brink when they must decide which secrets should remain buried and which ones should be driven into the light.

It's a stark reminder that even the most innocent of us have secrets we would rather keep hidden, it's the ones that escape that can be the deadliest.
