Ever catch yourself asking, even in your own mind, “Why can’t I get people to behave the way I want them to? Kids, boss, employees, teammates, spouse… If they would just (fill in the blank), then I could (fill in the blank)”We can’t force people to be different than they are, but we can influence situations by giving people the autonomy to be themselves while behaving in a way that’s within the boundaries for the outcome we hope to achieve. By influencing environment (context and surroundings) and expectations, we influence behavior. This is true leadership - influencing people to do what we want them to do because they want to do it. This is the essence of everyday coaching. Successful everyday coaching is an ongoing journey to understanding why and how we inspire, motivate, and influence the people we relate to and interact with every day.
