I generally avoid YA vampire books, but I needed one for a challenge. This story focuses on the life-changing aspects of becoming a vampire.
Teenage Minnie is vampirized without her consent. First she has to deal with a changed body with new needs. All her plans are upended, her family and friends shun her, and the rest of her classmates become hostile. It is easy to empathize with Minnie. Her problems are relatable and feel real.
It’s a smooth read with good characters and real issues.

I loved this book! Minnie is a perfect character. The story flows from the beginning to the end. It touches on a pretty important subject if you really think about it. Acceptance of people different from ourselves and not hating other! Wow such a good read, I can’t wait to read the rest!

Teenage Minnie Kim has never been kissed. She loves science, she gets good grades, and she was even accepted to Harvard early. Her best friend is convinced she needs to live a little and be a teenager and get that first kiss, so she encourages Minnie to dress as a slutty vampire and go to a Halloween house party. Vampires are a real thing and they have rules to being a vampire, but it doesn’t stop Ethan from draining her, panicking, and turning her into a real vampire. It’s up to Ethan’s vampire family to take Minnie in and train her in the ways of coping as a vampire in the modern world and trying to find her new place in society that still sees vampires as being monsters even if they have feelings, too.
I thought this was a fascinating story. Yes, it’s appropriate for teenagers. Minnie comes off as being a typical awkward teenager with the wanting to grow up, and then realizing she’s grown up too fast, the usual trying to fit in and deal with bullies, and trying to make friends with people. There is a fun tentative romance in this that looks mostly like a one-sided crush, and the awkward trying to guess what the guy is thinking and decode his behavior. And I loved her trying to fit back in with her school after turning into a vampire and having to navigate troubling waters as the PA system outs her as being a vampire for the entire school to know, having her favorite teachers look at her as a monster, and all of the students saying things about her, which of course is a commentary on prejudice. I loved her patience and stubbornness for them to accept her, and trying to find allies among the humans. All of the reactions of all of the people around her felt real. (I even did that same science experiment in high school). I also loved the extracts from the vampire handbook at the beginning of each chapter, which were almost always totally wrong to the point of being laughable. Where I thought the story could have used more work was in the vampire home and the other vampires, which felt like there hadn’t been enough time spent on exploring them. As in, sometimes the place is referred to as a cabin, but then it seems to be a mansion, and it seems to have multiple levels underground? It felt a bit confused in descriptions. And I never felt like I got to know the other vampires since Minnie seemed to be relatively reluctant to talk to any of them and they all seemed to be loners. Ethan, the guy who turned her, after that scene where he turns her, he basically vanishes from the story only seen in cameo for a scene or two. I thought for sure she’d at least get a confrontation closure with him, but no. Yes, I loved Philo, and I loved his background (though I still have questions about him and Diana), and his mysteriousness, and being very full of himself. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Minnie. She still has to survive high school, get that degree, and college or interning, if she’ll actually shoot for Harvard or will her plans for rights and acceptance for vampires take her in a completely different direction.

Wow, wonderful book, well written.
I was pulled through this fast paced book after Mini’s plans for her life unexpectedly changed because of an unfortunate first kiss!

I'm not the kind to go for romances but it was required for a YA literature class I was taking. I honestly don't understand why this book has such high ratings. There are multiple references to pedophilia! The main character likes to flirt with middle aged men and rationalizes it by saying that nothing will come of it. She also mentions how she likes that older men recognize that she's "not like other girls" and is more mature and treat her as such. There is also rationalizing of rapists. The main character is also very stereotypical.
I think this book should NOT be taught in schools. Nothing with pedophilia should be in schools.
Warnings:
Drugs: The characters drink blood.
Sex: The character is kissed without her consent. She flirts with middle aged men. She also wants an older man to kiss her when she thinks that he is in his 20s forever. There are references to rape.
Rock and roll: Nonconsensual kisses. A reference to rape. Pedophilia.
Language: Bible
Violence: There are references to war and rape. The main character is beat badly.

It took a minute to get into this book and the action happened fast with little build up but after that, I loved it.

This was... almost good. The opening chapter is one of the worst I've read, with Minnie talking to me about what's to come and spending like 3 whole paragraphs crying over her padded bra.
But the rest... she's turned into a vampire that night by accident and then the vampire sire comes to her and welcomes her into his home, and she's taught how to be a vampire, and it wasn't that boring. She makes friends with her new family, and there actually was a love interest I didn't realize was the love interest until waaayy later which deserves applause. He actually stood out from all those other broody and dark bad boys with his total disinterest and stoicism. His relationship with Minnie is actually sane, too. He supports her when he can and leaves when he can't instead of lashing out on her, doesn't blame her for other people being dicks and is overall an ok guy. I just wish he had more depth than just being stoic and smirky.
Minnie was actually very good too. She's focused but has teenager weaknesses like crying fits and watnot, and in her situation it's entirely forgivable. My only issue with her was the "Omo"'ing- she's Korean and thus uses Korean words, oh sorry I mean word. Because it's always the same one twenty times in a row and that pisses me off faster than this bitch died.
Oh and btw vampires are out in this world. Like everyone know they exist.
It was introduced pretty much like that in the book. About chapter 3 when Minnie is already one. And I was just facepalming. You need to introduce these things first, people. The "you're a wizard harry" doesn't work when everyone is supposed to know about it. Couldn't slip one word about it during Halloween? With how cunty the humans are to the vampires I refuse to think they wouldn't have measures to protect their kids and shit, even the kids being the ones to do it.
Apart from that it's boring af. There's no story to speak off; the plot is the subplot. Minnie goes back to school and tries to fight off the discrimination against vamps... which is ok, just boring, but when she compares that to racism and homophobia, I was like "HMMMM" like sorry bro but gays don't risk going mad and eating the school. Nor do they have powers and need to feed on blood or they'll start falling apart. Like ofc what they're doing is disgusting but come on; you're a predator and they're your prey. Ofc survival instinct wouldn't turn off bc an agreement was signed.
If we ever get half stars Imma give it a 2.5 because I liked how the author made Tim sympathetic even when he's the one who ate Minnie and turned her against her will and subsequently ruined her life. I'm just disappointed bc this could easily have been a 4-stars with an actual plot. Like more vampire stuff, maybe seeing the council, oh and what about Brandon, interactions with Tim, with the discrimination as a subplot. More about the gifts -like I can't believe Minnie never asked about that- and like I think the author forgot she already told us Philo was a Spartan because he says it again later and Minnie acts like it's news.
So yeah, it's not worth reading by far but it's not a hole of creativity like the other shit in this box set.

Vampires are real, and they have rules: you can't turn anyone who doesn't want to be turned. Well, Minnie gets bitten by a vampire at a party, and she sure didn't agree to any of it, but now she's a vampire. It's ok though—she can still live her normal life, right? Finish high school, go to college, make a difference in the world? She is still Minnie, no matter how everyone else views it. Unfortunately, everyone else have a bit of a prejudice against bloodsucking undead monsters, even if they look like a prettier, healthier version of themselves and act mostly normal aside from snacking on blood cubes. Minnie has a lot of bigots to contend with before she can find anything close to the life she had before. Luckily, the vampire that turned her has a vampire family and they have taken her in, and what better romance to fall into than with a 2000 year old vampire also stuck as a teenager for eternity?
This was entertaining. 3.5 stars.
Minnie is likable enough. Except we are told many times how smart she is and the evidence is not so frequent. She falls immediately for this vampire and I had a strong skepticism towards their relationship. If you are 2000 years old, do you really let a teenager get under your skin that quickly? I wish the author had stuck with like 60-year-old or even 150-year-old vampires. As soon as they pull the 'thousands of years' thing I just have a super hard time believing in these characters.
The story is about Minnie, but it's also a narrative on people who are different and how they are treated. It's easy to be sympathetic to Minnie's plight and want to see the others overcome those prejudices. ...But it is on a little thick.
I did like the concept overall. It's hard to get a totally original vampire setup, but the author did a pretty good job of placing it in modern day and asking how would people regard vampires if they only recently learned of their existence, and didn't really know much about them?

This book was a different sort of vampire tale. It takes place in Utah, yet they also seem to be simultaneously in Phoenix, which was a little hard to understand, but perhaps that was a result of artistic liberty. Regardless, the characters were lively, and it had some fun dialogue and descriptions about life in an American high school as a daughter with determined, Korean parents. Acceptance, prejudice, bullying, forgiveness, friendship, and love were some of the underlying themes. I especially liked that Minnie was such a brilliant student with a good heart.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This the first book in a series and the first book I have read by Ali Cross. I have seen other just have not had a chance to read them. I love the character of Minnie Kim. She is so sassy and upbeat. She is will to keep going even after everything that has happened to her. A little thing like becoming a vampire is not going to hold her back. She just needs a little vampire training and get back to her life. The descriptions are amazing and not over done. It was a story that flowed well and makes me want to read the next one.

I loved this book. So far the whole series has been amazing. I love the author's writing style and the way she is able to capture a teenage girl's emotions so well. It's incredible how she was able to write a book about vampires and the supernatural world without it being a Twilight knock off, she even mentions the Twilight series a few times. I feel like even though it's such a common topic, Ali does well to make an original book. I am still amazed by the way she took the idea of the supernatural world and made it her own in the later books.

This story has a lot of potential, it’s in fact great. I just feel I would’ve liked more storyline based on the development of character descriptions. I don’t feel we get that much of- when each character is presented and speaking. It’s pretty vague, but the plot and story that unfolds balances this out. The problems that arise in the book, are everyday problems that everyone has dealt with at least once in their lifetime. Either by a friend, or elsewhere. Other than that small detail, which I earlier explained that I feel the writer could’ve worked on a bit more. This story would’ve definitely earned a 5 star, but without that small point it’s simply a 4 for me. Which is still a very good score, in my eyes.
Also, towards about the 60ish % mark, I did feel the writing was a bit of a rush that impacts a story mix up. I didn’t really know which characters were which (particularly the vampires), and why I needed to know more in depth on these particular characters- to had better distinguished one from the other.

Such a cute story
I love the characters ! This is a cute story about a young girl who has everything going for her and over night becomes a vampire . The way she handled things was realistic and not overly dramatic. She has up's and down's and there are positives and negatives but in the end things are looking up. I can't wait to read the next book and see where this story goes.

A lot of potential! I enjoyed this story it had a Twilight prequel vibe. I am definitely interested in seeing where the series goes. It has a definite eye opening effect on social issues that are still prevalent in our society. The ugliness of reactions out of fear and ignorance when it comes to differences was glaring. Great start to a new series.

Not sure what I was waiting for. This book has been on my TBR list for awhile but something always came up. Now I finally gor to it and i loved it. All the feels and even though there were some heavy stuff going on it was a lighter read because Minnie is an awesome character. I admit I cried a few times and my heart hurt(s) for her. There is no cliffhanger but we are left anticipating events to come. Definitely a good book anf I look forward to continurong Minnie's adventures

This book series is so amazing, that I actually struggled to put it down. If you like Vampire Diaries or Twilight you will LOVE this series. Minnie is such an amazing character who has always bounced back even stronger after the world tries to knock her down. Unlike most of the vampire books this one makes the story feel believable. The addition of the vampires guide and the treaty really makes it feel like real life.

A modern spin on vampires. It was a fresh take on an old classic subject. Minnie is likable and relatable to teens and those young at heart. Her struggle in her new life is one filled with both common and surprising challenges. One of the things I enjoyed most was the diversity of characters. The book talks about people from all over the world, the struggle of being Asian-American, and even touches on mental health. I cannot wait to see how Minnie’s life will develop next.

Great story!
At first, it seemed like just another light-weight teen coming-of-age story, but the more I read, the better it got. The characters are really well-written, and the author does a very good job exploring their emotional journey. I'm really interested in seeing what happens when the character who's introduced at the end encounters the main group of characters, so it's on to the next book for me!

En pesten man jfc

A New Perspective
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are complex but easily understood. It also shows truth within prejudices. Ugliness of group mentality and cruelty amongst young peers, is a real, existing issue.
Minnie is a great main character, who's self-esteem gives a strong sense of bravery through hardship and struggle.

This is a great first book to introduce series. It has high school drama, but not so much that adults won't enjoy it. I love the hints at things to come in the next books. It's a great new idea, vampires living out in the open with humans, and trying to integrate into society. It's an excellent, feel-good read. Even if first kisses suck, this book didn't!

That ending though
I can not wait to see how this twist will trickle into the next books. Mini is my favorite ya female lead I've read in a while she is an earlier riser, pushes through to find inner strength, and is very forgiving all qualities I feel balance out the other characters in the book.

It was a very good book and I think that a lot more people need to read this book! She is a very talented author! I liked how much details there was in the book and how the book she finds a new family after her old one abandoned her.

This book is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone. Minnie is a fantastic character. I love her love of learning and that she works hard to remain normal, even after becoming a vampire.

Prejudice
This is a thought provoking fantasy that addresses prejudices. An imaginative world that makes you question who you are and what your patience level truly is. And forgiveness...! Ha!

Fun book
I really enjoyed this book. I loved Minnie and felt bad for her struggling and I cried with her. I liked how in this book becoming a vampire was hard and a real struggle or her and everyone she knew. I’m excited to read the next book and continue the story!
