Dominion sentinel Kaela Garrett will go to any lengths to gather evidence against a suspected traitor, even if it means auctioning off her body to the highest bidder. Posing as a slave should have been the perfect cover to gain access to an exclusive gala. Only she hadn t anticipated a sexy treasure salvager with a grudge outbidding everyone including her mark to possess her. Lorcan Hunt can t believe the very sentinel who had him arrested six weeks ago is on the auction block, completely at his mercy. What better way to get even and pass the time until his next job than force her to submit to every new and wicked revenge he can imagine? His every demand for her submission, however, comes with a price: a burning need that slides under his skin and grows stronger with every concession she makes. When Kaela finally gives in to the fierce desire between them, Lorcan finds himself hopelessly caught in an impossible choice. Honor the commitment binding him to his next job or hold onto the one woman he can never have."
A born and raised Maritimer, Sydney Somers fell in love with writing when she finished her first story, Jenny and the Glowing Green Mittens. After attempting her first book in high school, she set writing aside to focus on school. While getting her degrees in psychology and education, Sydney tried her hand at journalism between part time jobs before finally returning to her love of writing.
Twenty-five novels and novellas later, Sydney is thrilled to spend her days slaying demons, running with shape-shifter packs and making the people in her head fall wildly in love. When she’s not writing or curled up with a good book, Sydney can be found chasing after her herd of kids, talking her way into a gourmet meal, exterminating rogue dust bunnies or joking about the pending zombie apocalypse. She loves hearing from readers and invites them to contact her anytime.
I would give it a 3.5. Kaela Garrett is a Dominion sentinel. As part of her undercover work to find a traitor she puts herself on the auction block to sell herself as a slave. When Lorcan Hunt sees her on the auction block he bids for her. He has only revenge in mind. Several weeks ago Kaela had him arrested and confiscated his cargo. He outbids Kaela's partner and claims her. Kaela is furious with him but he does not care. What Kaela does not know is that they are both looking for the same criminal. I loved the interaction between Lorcan and Kaela. She is a strong heroine and never bows to him. The extend of Kayla's enslavement is being cuffed so she can't escape. Lorcan never forces himself on her but he does seduce her. The sex is pretty hot. Both characters are very likeable but the plot is kind of flat.
This one's a straight up science fiction piece about an antiquities trader (think Han Solo with a liberal dose of Indiana Jones) who runs afoul of a Sentinel - an investigator in galactic law enforcement. She busted him a short while back and, when she goes undercover as "merchandise" at a slave auction hoping to find her way into the household of a very shady dignitary, he buys her to get revenge for her arrest. The problem is that there's a LOT of chemistry between them and neither is going to be able to concentrate on their main missions as long as they're playing slave and prime between the sheets. You'll find Enslaved a little different from Somers usual fare of weres and witches but she comes through with plenty of steam and her usual talent for good storytelling and strong, saucy, thoroughly likable heroes and heroines. If you're a fan of Star Wars or the golden age space operas of the mid-2oth century you will love this racier treatment of the classic genre.
New author to me and loved the characters and storyline. Loved the banter between the two main characters, I found myself smiling and reading. Storyline is interesting and author has enough twists and surprises that makes the reader want to keep reading til the end. Oh and yes has some really, really steamy parts.
Enslaved, by Sydney Somers, was a little difficult to get into for me. I'm not exactly sure why either, which is more then a little bothersome. Normally, I have a very defined reason that I can give, but this time it wasn't anything specific. In fact, I thought the story was actually quite good and the premise really appealed to me.
Perhaps it had something to do with the main character of the novel, Kaela. While she is nicely written, I just felt she was a bit underwhelming. Even though she is strong willed, she lacks any true fight and honestly I felt she lacked any real emotions. This was in large part due to her under developed character. Because she isn't given a really defined history and prior experience, it made her emotions seem lacking and thus made it hard to give her a clear definition in my mind. In truth, I was more captured by Lorcan, who was comparatively much deeper. His history is nicely developed as are his feelings towards the Sentinel. His reservations about keeping her and his suspicion of her trying to play him are much more vividly portrayed then Kaela's feined hatred of him.
Really, it was their relationship together that kept me reading. Because of the situation they find themselves in theirs is a relationship that is forged in fire. Initially, it starts off rather bitter with Kaela searching for a way to escape desperate to fulfill her mission, which is another aspect that troubled me due to the fact she never really gives her job more then passing thought. Then she comes to find she is attracted to Lorcan and that ends up building into something more. Lorcan though is the one most evolved in his desire for Kaela. He starts the story with very shallow and spiteful reasons for buying her at a slave auction knowing exactly who and what she is. Yet, his sense of want and desire towards her spurs him on. Throughout the story, he comes to like his time with the feisty woman and becomes enamored with her, not wanting to be separated. In the end, Kaela comes to feel the same way and I loved the timidity of that realization. It was somehow the most honest emotion throughout the novel. Yet, while their relationship is interesting at times it still felt a bit rigid, like it was half formed. For instance, Kaela's loathing of Lorcan is never really explored. She had no real reason other then she thinks he's a criminal because she arrested him. It never really goes past that. She never followed up, just passed the case along and labeled him. So when they are reunited, the feeling of dislike is very faint, like an echo of an emotion.
The world, however, I found to be quite unique and enjoyable. The science fiction elements were interesting and I loved the settings of the story. In truth, this is a world I would love to see revisited. It has an edge akin to 'Firefly' with an adult twist and the aspects of space salvage and space pirate were just plain fun! I would have liked to see a bit more of it explored along with the characters simply because of it's appeal.
This was a good story, but I admit I was expecting something a bit more. Maybe if the novel has a follow up we can see more of Kaela's personality, which I believe would have added a lot to the story, making it a bit more balanced. And honstely, the way the novella ended, I would enjoy seeing the relationship grow because the real spark of chemistry didn't really happen for me until the last few chapters. So much there to be explored!
Overall, this was a quick, fun read, but I was left wanting a bit more from the characters. But, despite that I really did enjoy the world Somers created and would love to see future novellas taking place within it.
Enslaved is a fast paced futuristic erotic romance. Every now and then I love reading outside my little box of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romances. There were some really sizzling steamy scenes between Lorcan and Kaela in a dressing room, on a table and up against a wall. This book is not for the faint of heart and deals with some issues like sex slavery and restraints that might be uncomfortable to read about.
I thought that Sydney Somers handled the whole issue of slavery well, because Kaela wasn't really meant to be a slave-she was supposed to be going undercover on an assignment, and she gives Lorcan a run for his money in the battle of wills. She just wouldn't give in to Lorcans demands, but Lorcan wouldn't give up. He kept trying to make her squirm and feel uncomfortable as payback for arresting him but everything he tried backfired, and he gradually realizes that he admires Kaela for her independence and refusal to back down.
Kaela is used to everything being in black and white, and when she realizes that she may have been wrong for arresting Lorcan it startles her and she starts looking at him in a different light and thinks she might have some feelings for him. Just when Kaela is starting to see him differently she learns that Lorcan has brought her on the ship where the gala is being held that she was supposed to be at for her undercover assignment. Kaela decides to continue her undercover assignment even though she's in a different role then originally assigned to. Lorcan however, is at the gala to take back an artifact that was stolen from him. He does everything possible to keep Kaela out of the way.
I read Enslaved in one sitting, and while I loved the tension between Kaela and Lorcan, and enjoyed the steamy love scenes, I had a hard time being convinced of the romance between Kaela and Lorcan and I'm not sure why, because all the elements were there for the chemistry to work, but Kaela and Lorcan's personalities were hard to like at times. I think Lorcan fell for Kaela to quick, and that she fought her feelings for too long. Kaela was really tough, and that made her hard to warm up to, but by the end of the book I understood where she was coming from and liked her better, I just wish it had come sooner so I could like her before the last chapter. I also wish that instead of fighting each other so much, that Kaela and Lorcan would have joined forces earlier to fight against their common enemy instead hiding their true goals from each other.
Enslaved was very different from the Gargoyle Series that I just love to pieces. While I didn't enjoy this novella as much as the Pendragon brothers series, I can't wait to try the other genres that Sydney Somers writes because she writes such great steamy love scenes.
Steamy Sci-fi Story – Kaela and Lorcan were fun to read about and I wonder if perhaps there is a series in the making for the world mentioned in this quick and enticing read. I want to know more about Zypher, Zoe and Zoe’s brother - all could star in a book or novella of their own.
Kaela and Lorcan SEEM to be on opposite sides of the law and met in the past – their interaction was one reason Lorcan chose to buy her at a slave auction and in buying her he managed to set her plans awry. Will the two of them manage to meet their objectives in spite of the glitches they face? Will their steamy encounters be an interlude or perhaps and introduction to more in the future?
I thoroughly enjoyed this novella and do hope it is an introduction to a series. I would like to thank the author for the copy – this is my honest review.
I am a big fan of Syney Somers and I will read anything she writes. This book is unlike anything that I have ever read before so I was a little skeptical of it. Since Ms. Somers wrote it, I tried it anyways. I was so surprised by this book. I was was hooked from the beginning and couldn't wait to fin out what was going to happen with Kaela and Lorcan. Would the people on the ship find out that Kaela wasn't a slave, but instead a dominion sentinel? Would Kaela forgive Lorcan for purchasing her as a slave? This book had me enthralled from beginning to end! I would definitely recommend it!
I think this is my first dip into sci-fi romance and it was a great read. The connection between Lorcan and Karla was smoking hot. Goodness those scenes were cold shower worthy. I loved how strong and fierce Karla was. And how Lorcan brought out a little submissive side in her. I enjoyed the action scenes and the little twist in mystery. The ending was good and hopefully set the setting for Zoe and Zypher.
I need to qualify that there is very little BDSM in this. I left it as BDSM only because of the auctioning and slavery element. This was a fun read. I enjoyed it because of Lorcan. Kaela's frustration with him only caused me amusement. A simple plot with relate-able characters.
