Wolf shifter Lucas Cooper is usually up for any wild mission Harper Hall throws his way. But impersonating a doctor and breaking a woman out of the psych ward at a supernatural prison? That’s a little crazy even for him. Until he sees her. One look into her haunted blue eyes and every protective instinct he has flares to life. He’ll do anything to save her. Not that it’ll be easy. Break her out of prison? No problem. Convince her she’s not broken, undeserving of love, and incapable of redemption? That might be trickier.

She’s 754821 and she’s a perfect killing machine. A nameless Sentry cleaner raised from birth to destroy paranormal threats, she’s the thing monsters fear. But then Lucas rescues her and everything changes. According to him, she has a family, a home, a purpose. To Lucas, she’s not just a number; she’s Seven, and she’s beautiful.

They’re nothing alike. He’s warm, open, easy to talk to. Her? Not so much. Violence is all she’s ever known.

And none of that matters when she’s in his arms.

But when a threat from her past emerges to destroy the new life she’s worked so hard to forge, Seven knows she’ll need to rely on her killer instincts to protect the future she longs for with Lucas. She can only hope she doesn’t lose what’s left of her humanity—and Lucas—in the process…

Semi-Broken works best if read as part of the Harper Hall Investigations series (Book 1: Semi-Charmed; Book 2: Semi-Human; Book 3: Semi-Twisted). This book is intended for mature audiences. This book is not intended for anyone who doesn’t enjoy smart, kick-ass (literally) heroines and potty-mouthed, alpha werewolves, and who doesn’t appreciate a plethora of nerdy pop culture references. For the rest of you: happy reading!

The normal:

Isabel Jordan writes because it’s the only profession that allows her to express her natural sarcasm and not be fired. She is a paranormal and contemporary romance author. Isabel lives in the US with her husband, her son son, a neurotic Shepherd mix and a ginormous Great Dane mix named Jerkface. (Don't feel bad for Jerkface. He really is a jerk.)

The weird:

Now that the normal stuff is out of the way, here’s some weird-but-true facts that would never come up in polite conversation. Isabel Jordan:

1. Is terrified of butterflies (don’t judge…it’s a real phobia called lepidopterophobia)
2. Is a lover of all things ironic (hence the butterfly on the first edition cover of Semi-Charmed)
3. Is obsessed with Supernatural, Game of Thrones, and Dog Whisperer.
4. Hates coffee. Drinks a Diet Mountain Dew every morning.
5. Will argue to the death that Pretty in Pink ended all wrong. (Seriously, she ends up with the guy who was embarrassed to be seen with her and not the nice guy who loved her all along? That would never fly in the world of romance novels.)
6. Would eat Mexican food every day, if given the choice.
7. Reads two books a week in varied genres.
8. Refers to her Kindle as “the precious”.
9. Thinks puppy breath is one of the best smells in the world.
10. Is a social media idgit. (Her husband had to explain to her last week what the point of Twitter was. She’s still a little fuzzy on what Instagram and Pinterest do.)
11. Kicks ass at Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
12. Stole her tagline idea from her son. Her tagline idea was, “Never wrong, not quite right.” She liked her son’s idea better.
13. Breaks one vacuum cleaner a year because she ignores standard maintenance procedures (Really, you’re supposed to empty the canister every time you vacuum? Does that seem excessive to anyone else?)
14. Is still mad at the WB network for cancelling Angel in 2004.
15. Can’t find her way from her bed to her bathroom without her glasses, but refused eye surgery, even when someone else offered to pay. (They lost her at “eye flap”. Seriously, look it up. Scary stuff.)

This was as close to as good as the first one as it could get. Unlike our last book heroine, Mischa, I actually liked this girl a lot. Okay, so her name is Seven. It's better than North, Blue, or Apple.

You really gotta consider every possible scenario when it comes to naming your baby.

The guy in this one is Lucas, who is a werewolf-cop and has been in the series since the first book. He was the "Jacob" of the first story. The sweetheart loser that the heroine threw over for Mr. Angsty Broody. Let's face it, broody always wins. We women lap that shit up.

Whatever this guy's brooding about? I'm pretty sure I can fix it.

So, the deal is that all of these characters were previously in a secret government agency that took out vampires before the vamps came out of the coffin. The agency was disbanded after the vamps got human rights legally, because it was no longer open season. So, our people are all screwed up in different ways, depending upon what their jobs were. Seven was a "cleaner", meaning she would kill anyone who needed killing to "clean up" a situation. It could have been witnesses, innocent bystanders, vamps that were hard to kill, other people in the agency. She was an equal opportunity assassin.

Seven doesn't even know how to bake.

Since she was sold as a baby and was trained to be a heartless, unemotional killer all of her life, she wasn't exactly ready to fit in to normal society when the agency went bust. So, where to put her? Hmm.... I know, let's shove her in a mental institute where a sadistic doctor could torture her and do crazy experiments on her! That will NEVER come back to haunt us. It's the best idea ever!

Ouch. That's gonna leave a mark.

Lucas helps bust Seven out of the nuthouse and brings her home with him to "heal". And, according to every romance book ever, the best way to heal all things that ail us girls is the magic peen. Apparently, it can cure the crazy with just one use. Now, that's handy!

According to men, they are all Magic.

Still, magic or not, this book was fun enough. I wish there would be a little more danger in this series, like REAL bad guys. And, I wish that the author wouldn't reuse some of the same lines, like "I love you" - "I know", in each book; and the same I-have-to-stay-away-from-you-for-your-own-good thing. But, I will definitely read the next one. I like the couple already.

Shifters and dhampyres, wit, humor and excitement, acceptance and love. Isabel Jordan delivers it all in Semi-Broken, another wonderful installment in the Harper Hall Investigations series.
“In Lucas’ arms, she wasn’t a mistake, a wapon, a freak. She was just… Seven.”

Alpha wolf shifter Lucas Cooper, who we’ve met in previous Harper Hall installments, has been tasked to break free the prisoner known as 754821 from the supernatural prison. Something he was unsure of until he saw beautiful pleading blue eyes aged by pain. But getting her out of the prison will be walk in the park compared with persuading her to believe she’s worthy of love and happiness.

She was born Grace Riddick, but raised with only a numeric designation as a killer by Sentry to dispose of paranormal threats. Even the things that go bump in the dark are afraid of her. But Sentry is gone, she’s supposed to carry the final mission they charged cleaners with. But the hope and promise of family and love she finds in the shifter’s eyes is irresistibly tempting. They say opposites attract and these two couldn’t be more different. He’s easy going and cares deeply for this friends, she’s a quiet loner. Can they overcome their differences while attempt to neutralize the danger that’s threatening to destroy her?

I stopped reading paranormal romances a while ago when they all started to feel the same. Of course I made exceptions here and there. After reading Isabel’s “weird” bio section knew I had to read her books. I’ve come to treasure each of these gems as they appeal so much to my own sarcastic nature, love of pop culture and general weirdness.

I hope she never runs out of ideas for this series which I like to think of as a mix between Moonlighting, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a few others. But I’m getting off track, so let’s get down to it.

Lucas thought he was in love with Harper and that “the one” for him had gotten away. I was completely team Riddick when it came to Harper’s love life, but Lucas is such a great and easy guy to like that I couldn’t help but want him to find his happiness and who better to do it with than with Riddick’s sister! I loved how this sexy hot alpha wolf finally realized what true love was when he met and got to know Seven.

Of course it wasn’t easy as Seven had a lot to deal with, starting with incorporating herself into society. She also had to come to terms with her past actions and accept that she’s worthy of having family, friends and a life with love and happiness. So theirs was a slow, sexy, awkward and funny hot burn. I loved every minute of it.

I also enjoyed having back all the charming characters from past books who I’ve come to of as my own friends that not only help out the couple but add a fun and funny layer to the story. I can’t wait to read the next installment, possibly for Nikolai and Vi?

Semi-Broken is book #4 in The Harper Hall Investigations Series by Isabel Jordan. It’s a sexy and sweet paranormal romance with a kick@$$ heroine written from several points of view with a happy ending.

I think I’ve made it clear in my other reviews that I’m not a fan of deep, dark and emotionally scarring reads. For the most part, I just want to be entertained when I read. I prefer light-hearted-but-still-emotional reads that make me LAUGH a time or two. That’s why I love this series. It reads like a perfect blend of all my favorite romantic comedies, action movies and supernatural TV shows. That’s what kept me coming back to this series after Semi-Charmed, and why I loved Semi-Human and Semi-Twisted.

Semi-Broken still has all the elements that made me fall in love with the rest of the series, but it isn’t EXACTLY like it’s predecessors. There’s a little less slapstick comedy, a little more emotion, and a LOT more ass-kicking. And the fact that 90% of the ass-kicking is done by the heroine? Well, that pretty much makes this book my own personal brand of catnip.

I’ll be honest, though. I wasn’t one of the readers who was crying out for Lucas’s story. I thought he was a good secondary character in the other books, but I wasn’t entirely sold on the idea of him as a hero. I’m happy to say I was proven wrong. Somewhere along the lines in this series (when I wasn’t looking, apparently), Lucas became HOT. He’s alpha without being an alpha-hole, which isn’t easy to find in the world of paranormal romance.

And Seven? Ah, Seven. She’s the anti-Harper Hall. Where Harper is snarky and open and supremely likeable, Seven is somewhat confused by emotions and unsure of how to relate to normal people, so she keeps her guard up all the time. Seven is like a cross between Nikita from La Femme Nikita (the 90s TV series that I ADORED), Leelo from The Fifth Element and Alice from the Resident Evil series, maybe with a little Jason Bourne thrown in for good measure.. In other words? My catnip. All. The. Way.

So, long-story-short: get to your Kindles, folks. This one’s another keeper. Bring on the next book in the series! I have my one-clicking finger at the ready...

Full disclosure: We received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This story had the potential of being much more but tripped on the rug that is an overemphasis on physical characteristics and smut. I actually understood where the H was coming from in this story and the one month jump in time made his feelings for the h much more believable. However, I have a pretty good memory and don't need to be told every other chapter that the h has pretty, pink lips. Promise. Or that he's really attracted to her. I get it. I really do.

Anyhoo, I might just finish the series out. The stories are short at least. And they're made even shorter by the smutty scenes that I skip. At least this one had zero OP drama. My only quibble is It's been a while since I've read this series (ever since it was pulled from KU), but I do still remember the previous characters. So there's that. Overall, Isabel Jordan's writing is engaging and very easy to read. I just wish that she'd write a more developed MC and relationship.

I very much like this world and the characters that inhabit it but I was particularly underwhelmed by the plot of this book - that is if I could have found the plot, as there wasn't one. Lucas doesn't so much save Seven from prison/mental hospital as just walk out the door with her. Then they share a house for a while, fight because he's a guy and fails to communicate properly. Make up. Have sex that lasts over 4 very strange short chapters (why did we keep stopping and starting? - it was weird) Then someone else is kidnapped and that is resolved, the bad guy isn't even a bad guy.... so, plot wise? I kind of have nothing. To the point I found, after about the 40% mark that this book bordered on boring.

And though I liked both Lucas and Seven, they both needed something more to them to add to this story. Seven needed some angst, at least some reservations before she embraced her 'family' but instead she just shrugs and goes with the flow - after like a decade of torture??? She had more problems with the shower than she did accepting human contact. It was discordant.

"Semi-Broken" if the tale of how Harper and company find Riddick's missing sister, Grace or 754821. Dr. Violet Marchand and Luca Cooper enter Midvale prison where they find her drugged and chained to her bed. After getting her into an interrogation room, it becomes instantly clear 754821 or Seven as she will learned to be called and Luca have an immediate response to each other. Then Dr. Mengela, the doctor responsible for performing experiment of Seven and keeping her caged interrupts them and all he'll breaks loose.

Once Luca and By get Seven out of the compound they bring her to Harper Investigation's offices where they have to figure out where Seven will live. After considering several options it soon becomes clear that Luca's home makes the most sense. As Seven learns to fit into society and learn to work cases with the investigative team she also is falling for Luca. However, Luca has been warned by Vi that Seven is not ready for a relationship. The trouble is no one warned either Seven or Lisa's raging hormones.

All is going fairly well until someone takes a shot at Seven. Now the hunt is on to locate the assassin and take him out before he spoils Seven's attempt at a new life. There was plenty of tension and intrigue in this read. I also loved the deadly innocence of Seven but this book left me wanting more. It felt as though it ended too abruptly and I felt the storyline was rushed towards the end. I'm hoping the next and final book in the series will wrap things up nicely!

Semi-Broken was maybe my favorite of the series, next to the first. All of your favorite HHI characters are involved, but this one focuses mostly on Lucas (werewolf, former detective with the Vampire Crimes Unit VCU) and Seven (Riddick's long-lost sister).
He made her feel like she belonged somewhere. Here, in Lucas’s arms, she wasn’t a mistake, a weapon, a freak. She was just… Seven.
Seven's story, and that of Vi's "boyfriend", are quite sad, so it was great seeing her find his HEA. Her naivety was charming as she tries to find her place among the by-blood and by-choice family members welcoming her into the fold. I'm glad Lucas realized his heart as well because I do not like love triangles. While I knew there wouldn't really be one early on (thank you, Mrs. Jordan!), I still hated seeing him pine and moan over Harper's relationship with Riddick. We'll see what's in store for Vi and her probable HEA up next in Semi-Sane.

Harper and her family, not to mention those now working for her, continue to make me laugh. I'm enjoying this series so much more than I anticipated. I'm having no problem bouncing from one book to the next. I'm sure I'll have some snark withdrawals when I reach the end of my stash and the wait between books begins.

The in-joke in “Semi-Broken, fourth in the 'Harper Hall' series, is straight out of 'Star Trek: Voyager' and Seven of Nine.
Earlier in the series it was revealed that Noah Riddick had a sister, Grace, but knew nothing about her whereabouts as they have been separated since childrhood.
Harper has instigated a search for her and finally tracks her down to a prison/medical centre for paranormals.
Wolf Shifter Lucas and human psychiatrist Vi spring her from the facility after discovering she has been tortured and abused for years.
However, Grace is no more, she's been replaced by 754821 and is a killing machine.
On release she adopts the name Seven.
Reviewing the previous book ('Semi-Twisted) I complained that the series was becoming far too formulaic byt this episode is probably the best so far.
Seven lacks any and all of the social graces, humour, sarcasm and innuendo mean nothing to her, her understanding of English is purely literal, and emotion is a stranger.
Thrown into the maelstrom that is Harper and her motley crew, becoming part of a family group, having feelings for Lucas, all leave her adrift.
When Lucas backs away she fully understands that she is unworthy, but it still hurts her.
Oh, and there's the slight problem that someone is trying to kill her.
It's quite emotional some of the time and the killing plot is somewhat tacked on, but I enjoyed every moment of it.
4 Stars.

Yay! Lucas finally gets his story! I've wanted him to realize that Harper wasn't really the one for him. Of course, this story is a bit of instalove, but I can deal with that better in a paranormal story like this. Seven has never had it easy. She's been trained for one thing and one thing only and now has been tortured for being what she is. Freedom and choice, a family, none of them are anything she ever thought she'd have in life.

I liked Seven and Lucas. She's strong enough to stand up to him, but her limited understanding of the way people interact is kinda fun. I liked seeing her figure things out and find her place in the world. Lucas was trying so hard to do the right thing, nor matter how much it wasn't what he wanted. He was going to play the long game even if it killed him.

This series is a lot of fun. I like the characters and the snark. I like that they're all a little damaged and determined to support each other. I can tell where the next book is going and I'm here for it.

Seven is an awesome, kick ass heroine and I loved her - extra star for her alone. Lucas was just ok. The problem is that I'm not terribly fond of the whiney, semi clueless beta hero. If he is going to be the beta to her alpha then he has to at least be as smart. With this couple you get the distinct impression that not only could she physically kick his ass, she was also just more intelligent. The snarky, supportive presence of Harper and the rest of the gang definitely helped with me finishing the book.

Breaking into a mental facility and rescuing someone seems a bit extreme, but if you've read the other books you'll know it's mostly the norm lol.

Lucas goes to rescue a woman they soon call Seven. She's Riddicks sister, a killer or a cleaner as she used to be called.

Can she learn to show her emotions not act like the killer she was.

These books just keep getting better and can't wait for the new one.

Excellent!

I highly recommend this series for the entertainment value alone. The only caution I want to give us that some people may find a few scenes triggering, if so I recommend skipping those a go to the better ones. There is a gentle understanding and acceptance for the characters who have been given a rough deal, and that makes reading these stories well worthwhile. Enjoy!

Love it!

The paranormal books from this author have become an addiction, this series is awesome! The whole gang is back but this time is Lucas turn and finding his someone and find her he does and what a book it makes. After the brain washing of being a cleaner and being experimented on for year, Seven has to adjust to her new life and has many people supporting her but she has to believe in herself first. Off to read the last book, Vi story.

Finally a story about Lucas, I liked his character from the first book. It was nice to see something good happen to him. I also really liked 7 and getting a different insight on the cleaners. I also can’t wait to read V’s story next.
Just like the previous books in this series this one was fun, cute, and just a joy to read.

Another Great Read

Okay, I admit it. I am totally hooked on Harper Hall and her quirky group of " co-workers" ! These books are the Best! I was worried that once Harper had her baby, Haven, the plots wouldn't be as fun. But, if anything they have stayed as funny and can't as ever! I love these books!

All I can say is wow

I've loved all the books in this series, but I really loved Lucas and Seven's story. It was such a great story of two people who deserved happiness finding it together. I loved how all the characters interact with one another and that a group of misfits became a family.

Paranormal romance

I've been reading this series of books and all of them are 5 star reads. Seven, the heroine in this story is kick ass and vulnerable at the same time. Lucas, the hero, is protective but reluctantly allows Seven to prove that she is able to take care of herself. Eagerly looking forward to the next story.

It was okay

Nothing really to report on this one. It felt very lack luster for me. I was happy to meet Seven and go along with Lucas's story, but it didn't thrill me much so each time I picked up my IPAD to read it was more with a ho-hum feeling rather than the need to get back to the story.

I liked it. It is Lucas and Seven’s story but also introduces Violet and Nik’s story. I’m assuming that’s next. I’m looking forward to it. All the usual characters are there and in true form so it’s one big happy, loving, scary family.

Cute

This was cute, but not funny. Which is a shame, because the blatent belly laughs were why I kept reading. I'm not usually one for romance stories, even if they are dressed up as "whodunit"s. Still I'm hoping it's a blip and we get back to the funny. I'll try the next one.

Seven and Lucas

Seven is Riddick's sister, and was trained by sentry to be a cleaner. She is also a dhamphyer, half vampire and half human. She is exceptionally strong, and has teleconetic abilities. And she is perfect for Lucas, a werewolf and a detective.
