No one knows crazy quite like Dr. Violet Marchand. As the preeminent psychologist to Whispering Hope’s supernatural population, staying calm, cool, and collected in the face of crazy is sorta part of the gig. So, when she starts receiving death threats, Violet isn’t all that rattled. But when her new bodyguard turns out to be the man who betrayed her—the only man who ever came close to breaching the carefully constructed walls around her heart…well, trusting him again might just be a little too crazy, even for a pro like Violet.

Nikolai Aleyev has a lifetime of sins to atone for—not the least of which is betraying Violet’s trust. She’s made it clear she wants nothing more to do with him, and he understands. She’s better off without him. It doesn’t matter that he’s broken and only semi-sane without her. But when he’s assigned to act as Violet’s bodyguard, Nikolai knows he can’t stay away. Protecting her? That’ll be easy for a dhampyre like him. Keeping his hands off her and controlling the attraction that sizzles between them with every touch? That just might be more than he can manage.

When bullets—and sparks—start flying, Nikolai will put everything on the line to save Violet—his freedom, his heart, his life. Because sometimes, the line between crazy and happily ever after is razor thin, and the reward just might be worth crossing it.

The normal:

Isabel Jordan writes because it’s the only profession that allows her to express her natural sarcasm and not be fired. She is a paranormal and contemporary romance author. Isabel lives in the US with her husband, her son son, a neurotic Shepherd mix and a ginormous Great Dane mix named Jerkface. (Don't feel bad for Jerkface. He really is a jerk.)

The weird:

Now that the normal stuff is out of the way, here’s some weird-but-true facts that would never come up in polite conversation. Isabel Jordan:

1. Is terrified of butterflies (don’t judge…it’s a real phobia called lepidopterophobia)
2. Is a lover of all things ironic (hence the butterfly on the first edition cover of Semi-Charmed)
3. Is obsessed with Supernatural, Game of Thrones, and Dog Whisperer.
4. Hates coffee. Drinks a Diet Mountain Dew every morning.
5. Will argue to the death that Pretty in Pink ended all wrong. (Seriously, she ends up with the guy who was embarrassed to be seen with her and not the nice guy who loved her all along? That would never fly in the world of romance novels.)
6. Would eat Mexican food every day, if given the choice.
7. Reads two books a week in varied genres.
8. Refers to her Kindle as “the precious”.
9. Thinks puppy breath is one of the best smells in the world.
10. Is a social media idgit. (Her husband had to explain to her last week what the point of Twitter was. She’s still a little fuzzy on what Instagram and Pinterest do.)
11. Kicks ass at Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
12. Stole her tagline idea from her son. Her tagline idea was, “Never wrong, not quite right.” She liked her son’s idea better.
13. Breaks one vacuum cleaner a year because she ignores standard maintenance procedures (Really, you’re supposed to empty the canister every time you vacuum? Does that seem excessive to anyone else?)
14. Is still mad at the WB network for cancelling Angel in 2004.
15. Can’t find her way from her bed to her bathroom without her glasses, but refused eye surgery, even when someone else offered to pay. (They lost her at “eye flap”. Seriously, look it up. Scary stuff.)

I read the first 4 books a long time ago so I didn't remember every detail before reading this one, but it didn't really matter. This book was a lot of fun, with moments of smuttiness. A good combination.

The H and h knew each other because he had previously stalked and kidnapped her. That's how all great romances start, right?

Awww. I'm sure these two will have a long and happy life together until they die by murder/suicide.

The hero comes to apologize to the heroine and she realizes she still finds him hot. Hey, think about it. Stalkers are pretty attentive and dedicated. They probably give the best gifts because they know exactly what you like and need. "Hey babe, I got you that bracelet you were looking at when you went to the mall with your friends. Also, since you are running low on tampons I included some of those in the gift bag. You know your period starts in three days, right?"
What a sweetie!

In the meantime, our heroine is getting death threats so she needs to hire a bodyguard. Guess who becomes the bodyguard? Oh yeah. It just so happens that Stalker McGee is the perfect man for the job. Things just keep getting better for our guy!

I was rooting for Stalker McGee. He's a nice guy! I also like how supportive he is. When she is about to punch an old boyfriend in the nose, he stops her:

"Yes, he deserves it... but I can't let you punch him like that."

Her shoulders slumped. "I know violence isn't the answer, and punching someone in the face isn't a mature response, but.."

He lifted her still-clenched hand and said, "If you hit him like this, with your thumb tucked inside your fist, you'll really hurt yourself." He pried her hand open, then curled her fingers closed again with the thumb on the outside. "There. That's how your fist should be... Now, when you throw your punch, turn into it from your hip.... and don't just stop when you make contact. Imagine you're trying to punch through his nose. Really follow through, yes?"

Now that's a good boyfriend. You know the old saying, "give a man a fish.." etc. He wants her to be able to punch people for the rest of her life.

There are a lot of variations on that saying...

Needless to say, I liked the book. As a matter of fact it has inspired me to reread the older ones. I'm not usually a rereader, but it made me remember how much I liked the first couple so why not.

A wonderful blend of fun, exciting and sexy story that made me laugh and smile throughout!

Harper Hall and her investigative team in BACK! I’m talking about all the pop culture, comedic fun as well as the brooding snark we’ve come to enjoy about this motley crew of supernatural beings who are now focused on helping out their friend, Dr. Violet Marchand, psychologist extraordinaire to all of Whispering Hope’s mystical community. When she started receiving death threats, the last person she imagined would be assigned to be her bodyguard was the only man she could never trust.

As a former killer for Sentry, he knew he was unworthy. He knew he shouldn’t have fallen in love with Violet. But the moment Nikolai Aleyev saw her, he was a goner. And after betraying her trust he’ll do just about anything to get a second chance with her. He doesn’t have to think twice when he’s tasked to protect her. Controlling his attraction though is another monster all together. But when Violet’s life is in danger he’ll risk everything, including his heart, to keep her from harm.
“Since the moment they first met and she smiled at him, he was lost. She was sunshine and sweet dreams and hope. Everything he wasn’t. Everything he’d ever wanted, but assumed he’d never have.”

Isabel Jordan has helped me go back to my paranormal reading roots. After a while they had all started to blend together and I became uninterested. But after starting this series I got hooked not just on the supernatural nature but mostly on Jordan’s trademark wit and appealing wackiness which shine through in abundance and had me laughing nonstop. As a side note to her: please continue this series, do a spin off or novellas. I loved these characters I would love to keep reading about them. They just cracked me up!
Why send a death threat if you didn’t care enough to proofread it before delivery?
“Your dead… He clearly meant you’re dead.”
“Yes, Vi, because that’s what’s most troubling about the death threat: Poor grammar.”

Even though Nikolai had made some questionable decisions, I found it incredibly easy to fall for the underwear model hot dhampyre. He saw beyond Violet’s composed mask and into the caring woman who dedicated her life to helping others. He recognized the error of his ways and was completely devoted to showing Violet the immensity of his love for her. I couldn’t help but get on board with Team Nikolai and cheer him and his sexy accent on as he endeavored to prove himself.

Of course it wasn’t easy not just because he had violated her trust, but because there was a crazy person trying to kill her and lousy exes to deal with. So their relationship had a few bumps in the road which were alleviated and sometimes aggravated by incorrigible friends from past books whom I’ve come to love.

Semi-Sane is book #5 in the Harper Hall Investigations series by Isabel Jordan. It is a standalone paranormal romance full of wit, snark, fun, sexiness and excitement all rolled up in delightful addition to this paranormal series. It is told from both points of view and has a happy ending.

Reread 03/2022.
I'm a bit torn. The series as a whole is amazing but the last installment didn't work for me as much as the first 4 books.
As a standalone I wouldn't give it more than 3 stars, but as final part of the series it gets 3,5 stars.
Violet and Nikolai 's story didn' t touch me very much, and I didn't feel their connection as much as I had the other couples' connection.

I enjoyed the dual povs, the paranormal world that this author has created in this series, and the lack of information about the H's past. I've also stopped hoping for a deeper story, more personal connections, and in that regard wasn't disappointed in this story. However, I really can't rate this any higher since the main couple's relationship centers mostly around sex. Sure, the H got to know the h well while he was stalking her for months. But still. They didn't do much talking about anything important.

It was a nice and satisfying end to this series, but I probably won't be reading anything else by this author. Too much sarcasm and sex, not enough content.

Another wild, wonderful, wacky book

Boy howdy, do I love this series. This story rounds out the love interests for Harper's gang, and we get to see progress in the characters from previous books. There really wasn't much of a mystery here, but who cares with the sexy times so hot and the dialogue so snappy. I hope we'll get some novellas and maybe a spin-off series.

I absolutely cannot tell you how much I loved this book. This book is the journey of Violet and Nikolai, we also see the rest of Harper’s crew. This book is as hilarious as it is serious which in my opinion makes it perfect.

I read a digital ARC of this book. I love this series so much. Nikolai and Violet definitely live up to the series, and as usual, I couldn't put the book down once I'd started it. Definitely recommend if you like alpha male heroes and tough, spunky heroines.

In case I haven’t made it abundantly clear, I’m a fan of this series. If you don’t believe me, check out my review of the last book, Semi-Broken. I take every opportunity I can to promote this series because for me, it’s everything I love in a romance: it makes me laugh, it makes me sniffle (because I DO NOT cry, damn it), and it makes me swoon over the sexy, brooding alpha- male hero.

It also throws in just enough action and fight sequences to counterbalance the mushiness and sexy times, which I love. (I ADORE action movies, and often, these books remind of my favorite action movies.) Semi-Sane fit right into the series. I don’t love it more than the others—but I love it just as much as the others.

Violet is a great heroine. In my opinion, she stole the show from Mischa in Semi-Twisted. (I’m still a little angry at Mischa for all she put poor Hunter through and I’m just not willing to 100% forgive her yet. But I digress...) She’s smart and poised, but still manages to come off as relatable and interesting and funny as hell at times.

As far as heroes go, Nikolai is no slouch, either. I LOVE a growly, grumpy, brooding alpha male who never ventures in alphahole territory, and Nikolai fit the bill nicely. (I also have a weakness for accents, so the fact that Nikolai had a hot Russian accent was a big bonus) The fact that he was the “bad guy” in the last book and managed to make an excellent hero in this one was super interesting to me. (Side note: the author is offering a free downloadable poster of Nikolai on her website. I highly suggest y’all check it out. I got my copy. Hubba hubba.)

But while I loved Violet and Nikolai and loved seeing all my favorite characters from past books, what I enjoyed most about Semi-Sane (and the entire series, really) was the smooth dialogue, the quick pacing, and the comedy. (Nearly everything Harper says is hilarious, and Violet’s sister Dalia...well, you’ll just have to read about her to believe it. I about peed my pants laughing at her drunken antics.)

So, all things considered, it should come as no surprise to anyone that Ive rated this book a 5 out of 5, just like I rated every other book in the series. I’m anxious to see what the author has in store for us next! (My vote is for contemporary romance, if anyone is taking a tally)

Note: we received an ARC from the author free of charge.

"Semi-Sane" is a wonderful addition to the Harper Hall Investigations series but this is a difficult review for me to write because while this story is great as a story focusing on one of the major characters, it is weak as a conclusion to the series. At the end I say there with my Kindle and asked, "This is it?" Then, the disappointment began to sink in.

This is Dr. Violet Mardchand's story of how she falls in love with the perfect person for her but who is also the least likely because he is Nicholai, the man who previously kidnapped her. How did this happened? Well, after Nicholai is evaluated by the Council it is determined that he is not a danger to society or Vi. He shows up at her house one day where he apologized and asks for her forgiveness.

As Vi comes to grips with the fact that she is very much still attracted to him, she also understands she doesn't have time to give it much thought since someone has been sending her death threats. She also has her she's upcoming wedding to attend with none other than her ex-boyfriend. When Vi's apartment is trash, Harper and her team are in the case and you will never guess who they get to be her bodyguard. Yep, you guessed it but no I won't include his name in this review because that wouldn't be right.

Anyhoo, as the gang tries to keep Vi safe while also trying to determine where the threat is coming from the storyline began to morph into more of the same. For me I was saddened to find that this would be the final story in the series because the finale should be one epic storyline where all of the characters join forces to take out some major enemy threatening all of them but instead we got a watered down mini version of that thrown in for kicks with Vi's story. It felt off and rushed. In the author's defense she does ask readers to email her their insights as to what they would like to see next. I just wish she had asked prior to ending the series in this manner. Oh well, you can't always get what you want!

Wash, rinse, repeat

I'm sure there are many who would enjoy this story, but for me, it felt very much like wash, rinse, repeat of other stories in this series. I give it one star for the sassy remarks, one star because I feel that if you haven't read the previous books you would enjoy it, and one star because I made it through it due to it being a short read.
If you've read the previous books you'll recognize the same story line. If you read them in order you'll find that some things don't add up, plus within this book some things don't add up, so you'll have to excuse that. Misspellings or wrong words, but I've noticed that in all these books.
The thing that really just made me cringe is the whole "I'm not good enough" theme with the characters, previous books were the same so I was really hoping for a switch up (who wants to read repeated whoa is me storylines book after book?!) but I read the same story as Seven's, the change up being Seven in this book is the man.
It's the last one I can bring myself to read.

Hmmm

Ok. This book gained a star for being a bit funny in places, but lost it again for 2 reasons. First, the copy and paste sex scene from the previous book. I mean, seriously, sentences, actions, and feelings were actually just cut and paste. Lazy. Second, too many inconsistencies. I know I'm picking them up because I'm reading the books altogether, but it sucks. I shouldn't pick them up at all, because (with a decent editor) there shouldn't be any. It's annoying enough that I'm not entirely sure I want to read the next one. The constant theme of "we're not good enough for each other" is kinda boring, and how come all these people are amazingly good looking apart from the comic relief? How is it all the women have boobs that fit perfectly into their mans hands, tiny waists, big hips and, great legs. The only thing that seems to separate them is colouring. Wtf?

I needed to get to this book. You knew that somehow Violet and Nikolai were going to get a second chance at things despite his horrid previous actions. I was cheering for them from the get go. I'm glad that Violet didn't just jump him the minute she saw him again as well. She was justifiably nervous despite her instincts still feeling the connection to NIkolai. He's a dangerous man and he'd proved himself to be a danger in the past. Yet, from the first its clear he's determined to make up for his past mistakes and prove to her that he means her no harm, and in fact would do anything to protect her.

This just made me happy. I liked both these characters and wanted them to get their second chance. Plus I just adore all the secondary characters that reappear in this one. Loving this series!

“Semi-Sane”, fifth in the 'Harper Hall' series, is centred on Whispering Hope paranormal psychologist Dr. Violet Marchand.
In a previous book she was kidnapped and held hostage by Nikolai Aleye.
Now he's in her office trying to apologise for his actions.
She turns him away but her heart wants him to stay.
There's never any question about a HEA (that's the way the series works) but getting there is going to take some time.
Luckily (for Nikolai at least), Violet is being threatened by a stalker and he's escalating.
Who you gonna call when someone needs protection?
Aha! At last Nikolai can legitimately spend quality time with the love of his life.
It's shorter than the previous books and, while quite funny at times, it seemed less well plotted and polished.
3 Stars.

Violet and Nicolai

Violet is a physiologist and works with paranormals, mainly those messed up by sentry. Nicolai is a dhampyr, very strong and had been reprogrammed four times. Now he just wanted to put that all behind and have a " normal life". He absolutely is head over heels for Violet. But someone is targeting Violet and she is in danger. Harper asks him to be To 's bodygaurd.

I enjoyed book 1 - 4 immensly, the perfect light and entertaining summer read I needed. I liked the last book in the series too, but it wasn't as good as the other ones. A lot less funny, and sadly the h's and H's character were a bit plainer then the characters of the other books in the series.. 3,5 stars.

Another Great Read in the Harper Hall Series

Is it possible for a series of books featuring the same characters to get better and better? It is if you're reading Isabel Jordan's Harper Hall series! The books feature everything good in paranormal reading- a good plotline with plenty of action, brilliant dialogue and hot romance! I never want this series to end!

I hope it is not the end

Hopefully this is not the last book with the Harper gang. I loved each and every character. Each one brought something to the series, each one had impact. I also thoroughly enjoyed this series. I really hope there are spinoffs on the future with haven and/or violet's and nikolyai's child and mischa's and Hunter's child. The ideas are endless.

From Russia with Love

Vi had it rough and so did Nikholai and if the rest of the paranormal gang let them, they might even have a HEA. This baby is packed with fun, action, Harper craziness and the great set of characters we have come to know and love.
I am off to read the novella with Harper’s Sis!

This was good but it was kind of the same story told for the fifth time. Big hunky Superman type falls for very capable woman. They both experience love at first sight then second guess the hell out of each other while some evil doer tries to muck it up by kidnapping the girl. I liked it but for the fifth time, it was predictable.

"Remember, open mind. Really, really open, OK? Like, wide-open, free-range, huge-Montana-cattle- country open, you know?”
Vi's book is good. I really like that Nikolai got to redeem himself.
This book did round out the series, nicely.
The novella's helped let go though.
The characters were great as usual.
So good, read it I think you should like it.

Fantastic

The whole series is fantastic. Harper will always be my favorite and I love that we get her and Riddick still in the books. Violet gets her man in this one while trying to figure out who wants her dead. Comedic relief is brought to you by Harper and Benny!

Really good

Another great book in the series with quite a few laugh out loud moments. Trying to read the passages to my husband that were causing me to laugh so hard I was crying were near impossible to do. Utterly brilliant story with all the characters from the previous books.

Least favourite book in the series. You take a cool, competent character like Violet Marchand and turn her into a gibbering, fool with little control over her utterings once her love interest is anywhere close. Hmmm...no. Just no. Still love Harper and the gang.

Always a LOL read

I always think it can't be as funny as the previous book and I'm always wrong. Snarky one liners said with heart tugging fierce news by characters you can't help but cheer toward their happily ever after.
