They say warlocks are lesser beings. I’m about to prove them wrong.
The streets have been my home for as long as I can remember. To get by, I use my magic tricks, bringing smiles to the faces of adults and children alike.
As a warlock, my powers are limited. Nothing like a witch’s magical skills. Basically, I'm a glorified magician as well as a second-class citizen. Fine. It doesn’t get me down. I have my cat Fizz and Kylie Minogue’s music to keep me going as I dream big.
I know there’s a better life out there for me.
When I accidentally summon the lost magic of arcana, something not even a powerful witch can do, my world is turned upside down.
Enter Tae Frost. Mysterious billionaire vampire. Deliciously handsome and brooding. Able to set my pulse racing with just one look. A man who offers to change my life for the better. I just have to move into his penthouse and help him hunt demons first.
Hmmm. I have a big decision to make. Do I take this Cinderella-like opportunity? Especially with the dangerous secret I’m hiding from the world. And if the witches discover I've summoned arcana... Well, it won't be fun to be me if they do.
There’s a demon making a big impression—a creepy, button-eyed man spilling blood across London. Seemingly uncatchable, as well as unhinged. The city is trembling in the wake of his shadow.
With my new powers, I’m the only one to stop him.
Damn.
Night Tricks is the first book in an Urban Fantasy Romance series packed with magic, demons, action, and steamy moments. Step into the world of a warlock who always tries to see the sunny side of life, and the sexy vampire who makes his knees go weak.
Richard Amos is an author from England who is constantly lost in the worlds he writes about, and the ones in the queue yet to be written. He also has more books in his house than anything else, and is never without a book (and chocolate) in his hands when he's not writing. He’s a proud nerd who loves to dance. Hard.
Richard writes M/M Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal Romance, all with tons of kick-ass action, adventure, twisty plots, and yummy times.
The 'Midnight Magic' series is set chronologically before the 'Demon Heart' series. And even though both can be read on their own, I discovered that it's better to start with this one for the world-building. Because the world-building in this book is much smoother and better integrated into the plot and now the info-dump at the beginning of the 'Demon Heart' series makes more sense, so it doesn't seem so odd to me anymore.
Now onto this book, which I really enjoyed. It's certainly not an over-brilliant fantasy epic, but who wants to read something like that every day. This first installment (no stand-alone books, the series must be read in order) reads wonderfully easily, but also has enough depth and interesting plot and personalities that it goes down really well.
Clay doesn't have it easy, but he tries to be a ray of sunshine at heart. He is a very interesting character, fortunately, because the story is told entirely from his perspective.
Being a warlock and homeless granted me the double whammy of abuse. I’d been pissed on, almost kidnapped, beaten up several times, treated like I was in the stocks in some medieval village. 🪄😡🪄
I wasn’t put on this earth to live in the darkness, to suffer. The better path was waiting for my feet to land on. Finding it was just proving to be a bit tricky. 🪄🌞🪄
The action picks up when he meets Tae.
The most beautiful man I’d ever seen stood there practically glowing by the door. Dressed in black, leaning against a guide pole, his arms folded. A blue cap covered his hair, but hints of obsidian tresses peaked out from the edges. Long hair under there? Skin alabaster, his cheekbones sharp enough to cut diamonds, he was utter perfection. Beautiful Asian features, seriously pretty masculine deliciousness for my eyes to feast upon. Like an older, less boyish K-Pop star. I wanted to lick him. He licked at his pale lips between speaking. Wow! 🧛♂️🫠🧛♂️
You shouldn't expect too much in terms of romance in this first book.
This cold, scary vampire I barely knew held me. And my head fell to his shoulder, his arm triggering a switch as the pressure became too much, as I tried to claw for sunshine within an eclipse. 💗🫠💗
The circumstances are quite difficult. There is an attraction between Clay and Tae, but both are carrying around a lot of baggage. And even if there are a few spicy scenes, you have to be patient. Probably very long ...
God, he annoyed me. We’d kissed, and he’d touched me, and here was Mr. Frosty again? Look at him! All brooding and tortured. What? Was my cum too nasty to spurt over his sacred fucking hands? “Take my hand, Clayton.” “It’s Clay!” I barked, taking his hand in defeat. 💔😩💔
I feel like two people wrote this promising monstrosity. The first few chapters were interesting than the writing degrades. Plummets. It’s like the first writer passed this story to another writer who only understood basic English. The communication between characters becomes short, robotic, and jarring. Every attempt to create a sentence becomes a slap in the face for the reader. It’s like picking something up a kindergartner wrote. There were four periods in a sentence! This was painful to read. I don’t understand the five star reviews.
I didn’t realise when I started reading that the next book isn’t out yet. But that’s on me I should’ve checked.
So the blurb intrigued me but what really drew me in was a British author. I’d guess that about 90% of the books I read are American. With maybe another 5% Australian. So it was nice to find a British one. It took me a while to settle but once I did I really enjoyed it. I absolutely loved Clay but I’m worried about the secret he’s keeping.
But what really annoyed me was Gosh - the first one made me pause. I mean it just seemed so odd. Then there was another…at one point we got three together!
Gosh. Gosh. Gosh.
At that point I knew the author was just trying to annoy me. Rise above it? Easier said than done my friend. I’ve quit books for less. In fact it’s a sign of how much I enjoyed this book that I suffered silently (well almost) through bloody 55 of them. I mean come on who actually says gosh?
Now I’m waiting patiently until April for the next book….
some good secondary characters and promising ideas
Rating: 2.75
“I considered the Arcana, wondering if it had some healing properties. Decided to not try or suggest such a thing. I didn’t know what was inside me, what it could do. Just because it whispered things at me, we weren’t joined at the hip.”
— Night Tricks (Midnight Magic Book 1) by Richard Amos
If reading that made your brain hurt, you’re not alone. That’s Clayton or Clay as he prefers to be called, warlock and the POV of the novel and series.
This novel has some promising elements to its plot, and overall series arc. It has some interesting secondary characters like the button-eyed demon. But to get to those and others, the reader must have an either a love for certain clichés story elements, a character that’s so unbelievably dimwitted, that he repeatedly does the wrong thing , leaps into sex, hides who he is but doesn’t really know who he is, does amazing things NO One can do but has basically a meh , that’s sorta neat, attitude.
Anyway see below:
Cliché: 🔹Rift in universe caused by magical war. Literally called The Rift. Soo many books with exact element down to that name. Please find another name, someone.
🔹Billionaire Vampire with black rose tattoos, because dark beauty with thorns. Yep. Complete with alabaster glowy body.
MC is hard to read as the book is from his POV and he often comes across as someone with the emotional maturity of a tweenage valley girl. There’s a lot of EEKs everywhere! In that exact manner.
As in “I mean…EEK!”
At the end of the first quarter of the book, I was seriously thinking of not finishing.
Tae Frost and Clayton Christmas’s relationship is along the lines of I want you, let’s have sex. Oh, no, it’s you, not me. Let’s have sex. More woe is me. More, sex. Oh , no. Look what we did. More woe. Rinse , repeat. Add lies, weepy history, lies.
You get ready at one point to say to any villain “have at them”.
By the end, the author has telegraphed who or where the villain of the plot is. And they are on the run with the hero still lying his brains out.
If I continue on, it will be only to flip through the pages to the end to see if I’m right.
No more EEK for me.
For fans of this author, I’m sure you’ll already have found this book and series.
For other lovers of magic and Urban Fantasy Romance fiction, I’ll leave it up to you.
Night Tricks by Richard Amos is the first book in his new series – Midnight Magic. A world that feels familiar with Arcana magic believed to be gone, but is it? Clay is living on the streets because warlocks are looked down on by witches and even bullied. He has his beloved cat, Fizz, and people around him that he cares about. He’s just trying to get by, but what’s he going to do when he catches the eye of a witch called “Leader” who wants to hurt him? But things really start going off the rails when he attracts a demon. Clay is borrowing more trouble than he could possibly handle. Night Tricks is an interesting novel, and I really like Clay. He’s a sweet guy, and I adore him all the more for his love for his cat. He’s been through a lot, but he’s hiding a secret. A secret that a female demon wastes no time in sniffing out. He knows his parentage, but it does him no favors as he tries to bury the small part of what he is. But while “Leader” and this female demon stalk him, there is a worse demon in the shadows. The “button eyed” demon. This dark creature really pulled me through the story. I love the twists and the surprises in this story as Clay finds himself in a variety of situations. I like the uniqueness of his situations and how he finds help in a billionaire vampire. This story has a lot of enjoyable elements and this author rarely fails to pull me into his stories with his unique characters. I’m rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
This world is so crazy and unique, I kind of don't even know what to say about it. Warlocks, demons, vampires, magic, and post-apocalyptic London. Where do I even begin to discuss all those? The story sucked me in and rolled over me in a cascade of vivid images and non-stop action. The push-me/pull-you dynamic between Clay and Tae utterly broke my heart. It's easy to see that there was some kind of connection between them, and while they both wanted to grasp it, they’re also pushing against it. This book has opened up so many possibilities and left me with so many questions. Even though I've only just barely finished reading it, I'm already dying to get my hands on the next one in the series.
I’m loving this new series so far. The characters are interesting, complicated, and flawed, and the worldbuilding, as I would expect from this author, is rich and layered. The plot kept me guessing. I’m already hanging out for book two! The cute cat is an added bonus.
Clay is an interesting guy. I love how he’s optimistic, and loves his music. The scenes with him and Fizz are sweet. I kept wondering when Clay’s secret is going to come out, and how that’s going to impact not only his life, but his growing relationship with Tae. He needs to come clean before someone else does it for him.
I love Tae, and how he’s struggling between what he wants and what he should be doing. The worldbuilding around vampires is interesting and different. I like how those details are revealed as they’re needed, rather than a huge info dump. I love the glimpses of his sweet side, which he quickly covers up. Fizz likes him. Cats have good people sense.
The magic system is well thought out and original. I love the idea of Trace, and the history of this world. I also like the social commentary with the division between witches and warlocks, with demons and fairies in the mix. And Arcana. I want to see how that pans out over time, and why Clay can summon it.
I’m still trying to figure out aspects of the plot, and who Clay really is as I’m sure his history isn’t what he thinks it is. The action scenes are tense, the sex hot, and I like that Clay and Tae don’t always come away unscathed.
Delving into the magical London of a near future in Night Tricks is always going to be an interesting prospect given this author's flair for world-building. I'm absolutely not disappointed. There are witches and warlocks, demons and vampires, and all manner of 'others' living alongside mundane humans in this world. The witches have claimed power, which means trouble for Clay, our warlock MC, as the witches have the capability (and the bigotry) to target warlocks for having a different (but inferior) type of natural magic.
So, the main characters are Clay Christmas and Tae Frost. Clay is something of an enigma...he's more than what he seems - more than what he knows of himself - but is living day-to-day on the streets. Yet he's very caring and protective, whilst being totally adorkable, with a runaway mouth. Tae, meanwhile, is a billionaire vampire and part-time demon hunter. He has literally anything and anyone he needs at his disposal but, despite his cold facade, there's depth and a warmth he's trying so hard to hide. I love the chemistry between these guys but the road along their fledgling partnership is far from smooth...I can't wait to see how their relationship grows in future books.
For me, Night Tricks gives great plot, lots of action, an interesting take on magic/magic users and a super sweet budding romance. All in all, it's another fantastic series opener...bring on the next installment! 5*
An ARC was provided by the author. This is my honest review.
Another good fantasy with the unique signature writing of this author, intriguing world building, and energizing chemistry between the two men at the center of the events. Clay is a homeless warlock hiding his true nature, living off Kylie Minogue's music, performing tricks for random audience, and holding dear his cat Fizz. Being bullied and hunted by witches, his life is not easy, but the moment the brooding and mysterious Tae Frost enters his life, he is in for a hell of a ride. Demon hunting, ancient magic, and evil witches are a must and create the base atmosphere for this story. I really enjoyed also the contrast between Clay with his optimistic nature, inability to stop rambling when he was nervous, and wearing his heart on his sleeve, and Tae with his stoic behavior, hardly any emotion shown, efficient and resourceful and brooding. As much as it seems like an odd choice, these two perfectly complement each other and contribute to the dramatic development of the story in unique ways each. After the conclusion I am very curious what comes next.
There is only one problem with this book…….The next one isn’t written yet. I was absolutely captivated by this story. I love mm romance, vampires, magic and fantasy and this book has all those in abundance. The world building is fantastic and this England with magic and demons and a detailed history is fascinating to read. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series and I will be checking out all of Richard Amos’ back catalogue. I highly recommend this book.
Is it possible this is my favorite book from this author? Or do I say that after every book? Either way, this one was awesome!
Per the usual, the world building is amazing. It is very easy to become immersed in this world and be unable to stop reading. The characters are engaging and likeable. Being the first book in a series, there are a lot of secrets left to reveal and dynamic to figure out. I can't wait for the next one!
2.5 interesting then boring, then interesting. But quickly back to boring and the characters do so many stupid things. Don't think I'll continue the series
Great story, awesome characters, some unexpected twists, and amazing chemistry between Clay and Tae. Really interested to see where the story and romance goes, and Fizz makes a great feline side-kick!
Richard Amos is a new to me author. I enjoyed his well thought out post apocalyptic London. The concept and story held my attention. The characters were multi dimensional.
So, this is the beginning of a new series by the one and only Richard Amos. Many authors write fantasy nowadays but for me Richard's books are special. He is a master of the world building. His worlds are absolutely mind blowing. Here it's London but different London, not the one we are used to. More dangerous, more violent, and though the street names are the same, the landmarks are familiar, it's just another city: a city where all the power belongs to witches and where the warlocks (and our MC is one of them) are just second class citizens. So Clay is young, poor, even homeless and earns his living doing magic tricks for tourists . He is the nicest and kindest guy, like a tsy of sunshine basically, has a cat named Fizz, who he adores and takes care of (much better than of himself BTW). Then something extraordinary happens and his life path crosses with someone he would never imagine to ever meet - a vampire and a billionaire extraordinaire, and even more surreal- they start working together (to make the world a better place, of course). But it's never easy, that's why the book is packed with action, fights, chases, all the good stuff. And there will be demons and witches, and elves....so good! I think it was a great beginning for the next wonderful series from this talented author, and I can't wait for the next installment. Strictly recommend this book to the fans of urban fantasy, absolutely lovable MCs, sweet romance, and lots of action. I was provided with an ARC copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.
I’m not quite sure what to think of this book. So I guess I'll just go with the pros first. The storyline was really good. The world build, the plot, even the fact that it's going to be a multi book series oh really really good. Which right now is the thing that would make me wanna read book 2. The Cons? How old is the MC supposed to be because he was is so juvenile. Like terribly juvenile. I don't know how many times I underline the word tummy bug what grown adult refers to their stomach is there tummy. Also it's very classic scary movie where the MC does those the stupid things and you as a reader know it's stupid and they're going to get caught but they're doing it anyways. Yeah that. Add in the weird Times to be thinking about smexy fun was kind of a turn off. The cat became a little too much. I want to know who this mystery people are I'd like to see maybe some more romance between the two main characters but I don't wanna deal with how juvenile he was.
"Night Tricks" was a fun, quick read with a very interesting world-building and a set of main characters that are potentially amazing, if only they were sliiiightly more polished. I pretty much adored both Clay and Tae: I'm a sucker for a good ol' sunshine, powder-keg twink and brooding, protective billionaire paring, so I loved them together quite a bit, even though this first book is more of a slow-burn, with just some hints at what they could potentially be together. Individually they're fantastic characters, even though Tae remains a bit of a mystery. I really admired Clay's positive attitude, the way he always tried to see the light in everything. Plus, he's the walking, talking embodiment of horniness: I cackled more than once. However, and this was one of my main issues with the book, I wasn't overly keen on the way he talked: he uses a somewhat immature (I guess?) type of language, a bit too mechanical and repetitive for my tastes, with one too many "Gosh" (and other sorts of mild expletives) I wasn't very fond of. It ties into his character, I guess, but yeah, not a fan. I also wasn't too keen on some of the plot points, mainly Clay and Tae's demon killing sprees: the fact that Clay doesn't actually know the reason behind Tae's mission left me a bit uncomfortable. I have high hopes for the sequel though, especially considering Clay's secrets: I cannot wait to see his power and his true self properly unfold. This novel, my first Richard Amos novel (though I'm sure it won't be my last) started out amazing and then, kind of lost itself? I'm not sure how to put it, but I think it needed a bit more of work to become truly, utterly amazing. It has the potential, for sure, so I'm still going to be reading the second book, especially after that action-packed ending.
This book seemed to happen, very very fast. Honestly I hadn't even realised the book ended until the narrator stopped, which was a bizarre experience for me.
I enjoyed the world building of this one, and thought that Clay made an interesting protagonist. I also enjoyed the mystery around Tae, and thought that he brought some much needed direction to the plot.
But when I say we jump from one thing to another at break neck speed? Yeah I really mean that. It felt like there was little breathing room for any one event after it happened, and the whole story has this very rushed feeling about it. What this resulted in was a story that felt way to quick, I couldn't enjoy the immersion of the world because we never take time to properly explore the dynamics of the world. It makes the book feel far too short, like your missing half of the content and now you have to buy the next two books just to get the understanding you weren't afforded in the first one.
Yeah I didn't like the pacing of this one at all, and it ruined a lot of the experience for me. But I will continue with the next one, as I actually got quite invested in the world building and in the relationship between Clay and Tae. Hopefully the next one feels better paced, but this one? Not so much.
One of the things I love most about Richard Amos’ books is how real his MCs are. His characters have rich inner lives and these rhythmic cadences in the way they think and speak that makes each novel a pleasure to read.
Night Tricks, as the first book in the Midnight Magic series, introduces a new type of character from the author in the form of Clay, who is a sweet little ray of sunshine, especially in comparison to some of Amos’ other mains, who were a bit more cynical and jaded.
Clay is a warlock, which are regarded as lesser than witches, and he makes do the best he can with what he’s got. And it’s working pretty well until things get a bit dicey and he finds himself embroiled in some trouble.
What is interesting is how vividly these characters are painted, and how the author takes the usual type of supe and twists just that little bit to give us something fresh and new. I’m excited to read more in this series, and highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something just a little different.
This is a very good story. This author does a great job of fleshing out new worlds but incorporating known items/places too. Clay has been gifted with a magic that has been gone for a long time, they’re still trying to figure it out why or how but I enjoyed watching him learn to use his powers and the best way to do that. Tae is a bit of a complicated and closed off person, we gradually learned a little more about him but I look forward to getting to know him more throughout this series. I am excited to see how this series continues and to watch these two figure out how to take down the button-eyed demon.
Clay, a warlock with secrets, is on the run from some witches that bullied him away from his performance space and encounters a demon that saves him from them. As the story progresses a few truths are dropped in his lap, a ride home brings a new obsession, and when something long thought extinct comes back the future becomes murky. Richard Amos took a trip trough the looking glass in Night Tricks. His Midnight Magic series seems to be following along the same lines as his others with an unassuming hero looking for love and gaining more than he bargained for.
I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
I devoured this like, well, like vampire low on blood. The characters and the pacing pulled me through and I was shocked when it ended because I just wanted to keep reading to find out more about the demons, the Arcana, and the MCs. I've already preordered the next book in the series.
Clay was a warlock that has been bullied and treated like dirt. With the prejudices of being a warlock, he still remains a strong, sweetheart. Tae is a fierce, yet broody, aloof protector, that comes to Clay after he accidentally conjures lost magic. Tae helps Clay get off of the street in exchange of defeating a demon.
I am literally obsessed with all of the world building Richard Amos does. I mean, every single story is a complete, fun adventure. I loved Clay so much. He is such a cinnamon roll. I also love that he is into Kylie Minogue. I am such a sucker for the grumpy/sunshine trope. I really love where this is going and can't wait for more.
Clay is a warlock trying to show warlocks are not beneath everyone. When he accidentally summons lost magic, Tae Frost comes to him with a proposition. He takes him off the streets and in return, he helps him find and defeat a demon running rampant.
This was a new author to me, but I enjoyed the author's story telling ability and how they brought us into a world full of warlocks, vampires and demons, making it feel as real as possible. Clay and Tae have a unique relationship but they work together well and their personalities don't clash like I expected them to.
The pacing was a little off for me. It started out slow, and didn't pick up until the very end. I'd love to see the author pick the pacing up and keep it steady throughout the entire book.
Richard Amos has an amazing imagination Fantay storey with a fairytale feel is an ejable read They say opposites attract and thats certainly teh case here - We have Clay - super sweet, Vulnerable, addicted to Kylie and easily loveable but is treated badly by all those around him and on the other hand we have Tae -Cold, Calculating, Hard, easy on teh eye but not easy to love normally. Add to the mix Fizz who;s Clays cute Cat and off we go to ever land again!
It took me a bit to really find what I liked about Clay, he is so soft, sweet and naive, he seems finds the best in everything. Which gets him into some tricky situations. Tae is cold and very closed off, but a fierce protector. They don't seem to have a ton of chemistry between them, aside from physical attraction. It hints to it, but then it's squashed so quickly. I spent the whole book wondering what Clay was seeing that I wasn't. Then Tae's past is explained and it all made sense. They face alot of unforseen obstacles together and uncover a lot of secrets they weren't expecting. Button eyes adds a dash of horror into the story. (I can't wait to learn more about him!)
One of my favorite parts of the book was Clay's love for Fizz. He never forgot his baby and she was always first on his mind when something went sideways! Always worrying about her well being over his own. Something Clay seemed to always do, is lookout for those he cared about even when he wasn't in the best situations himself.
This book was a lot of fun to read and I can't wait to read the next one. 😊
Great start to the series. I loved how Clay was with his cat Fizz also that the author really built Fizz into the story and how she didn't get lost as the book progressed. I can't wait to see how Clay and Taes relationship built over the series. While questions arise during this book I love how the author led into them and didn't just seem to drop them on you.
What a great start to this new series. Clay is a warlock and homeless. Poor guy always getting picked on and bullied by witches who are at the top of the food chain. Enter Tae Frost who is a billionaire vampire. Tae rescues Clay and introduces him to the world of demon hunting. Clay summoned Arcana, which is an ancient magic that kills demons and hasn’t been seen in 200 years. There is lots of action and heat between them and looking for to seeing what happens in the next book.
Richard Amos brings to life an awesome alternative reality in this book! His world building skills are amazing, and I loved how Clay's relationship with Tae developes. I can't wait to see where it goes from here!
