One little lie can spin so wildly out of control...and yet turn out so well.
Scarlet’s grandmother wants her to bring her boyfriend home for what may be her grandmother’s last Christmas. Which wouldn’t be a problem…if Scarlet actually had a boyfriend. Scarlet’s sister came up with a bit of fiction to make Grandma happy in that regard.
We all have boyfriends, Grams. Really, we're not going to waste our lives and die alone in a trailer full of cats.
Scarlet would totally skip the fake boyfriend performance, but her cousin Jane is bringing her boyfriend to Grandma's too—and he’s Scarlet’s ex.
Yeah. Her rich, arrogant, all too sure of his own charms, ex-boyfriend. That guy. There’s no way she’s showing up solo to face him. Scarlet is stuck, last-minute, with Liam, a man she’s never met and knows nothing about.
Maybe it’s Liam’s extreme hotness that muddles Scarlet’s mind, but she has a hard time keeping certain facts straight—like his profession, and the fact that he’s not really her boyfriend…so she’s not supposed to kiss him.
She needs to stay on her toes because not keeping her story straight will land her and Liam in all sorts of trouble.
If you love a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy with all the warm fuzzy feelings of Christmas trees, gingerbread, and hot guys, snatch up this page-turner today!
Janette Rallison has five children who keep her well supplied with plot ideas, sometimes even making cameo appearances in her novels. She likes to write romantic comedy because there is enough angst in real life, but theres a drastic shortage on both humor and romance.
Playing the Field was named Society of School Librarians International Best Book Award Honor Book, and both Alls Fair In Love, War, and High School and Love, Life, and the Pursuit of Free Throws were included on YALSAs Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults list. Fame Glory, and Other Things on My To Do List, was just chosen for IRAs YA Choices list for 2007
I'm dropping out at 40%. The lie is just getting bigger and when Liam's parents showed up at the Grandma's house and things could only get worse it stopped being fun.
Which is too bad because I was laughing myself hysterical in much of the beginning. Rallison is genuinely funny and if this were just the interactions between Scarlet and Liam, I'd be completely engrossed.
I'm going to slip this up to three stars, which I very rarely do for books I can't bring myself to finish. This is entirely in appreciation for all the laughter.
Do you laugh out loud when reading books? I don’t. Sometimes a quiet chuckle. But I’m in the middle of AN UNEXPECTED BOYFRIEND FOR CHRISTMAS by Janette Rallison and I’m laughing so hard I’m crying! My husband is giving me strange looks, and I can’t stop 😂😂😂 Do yourself a favor and grab this delightful holiday treat!

SO FUN! I have been wanting to watch Hallmark but don't want to be disappointed so I picked up Rallison's book because she never disappoints. This was such fun! Ok ok the guy was a little unbelievable but I've watch guys who barley love and girl get talked into marriage so this isn't that big of a stretch. I CAN'T believe they kept the whole thing going! If this kind of book drives you crazy in a bad way don't pick up this one because the whole thing just keeps getting worse and worse but I Loved it. It was fun and just what I wanted:] Lots of good kisses but kept clean. No religion.
... And you'll love this story if you choose to read it!
Janette Rallison has another winner! It's an old, familiar trope, but she gives it extra savor
Scarlet is sweet and funny - she's not dumb, but she can definitely be ditzy - - with occasional flurries of impulsivity that get her into trouble.
Liam agrees to pose as Scarlet's boyfriend & finds himself practically dumbstruck when he meets her. She's a sparkling ray of amusing sunshine in his dull, practical world of gray.
The story is one of those entertaining comedies where things keep escalating, but as unbelievable as it might get, it still successfully holds on to a veneer of plausibility that lets you enjoy the ride
*There's a point where the young couple dismiss parental concerns to share a house but with separate rooms for a short time, but realize how tempting it is & end up revising their arrangement
I always overestimate my self control when it comes to Janette’s books. I think “I’ll just read one more chapter.” Ha! I really should know better by now, but the hours I stay up too late are so worth it!
This was a hilarious fake romance book. Scarlet’s sister told their dying grandmother that they all had boyfriends in order to reassure her that they would be taken care of when she’s gone. Scarlet is okay with the fake boyfriend at Christmas plan, but when Scarlet’s cousin shows up with Scarlet’s ex-boyfriend, the lies escalate quickly.
I loved Scarlet and Liam. Their relationship was sweet, funny, and filled with chemistry. I laughed out loud at Scarlet’s impulsive nature, the mix-up over Liam’s profession, and Father Spielberg. Janette’s books are ones I would love to be a character in. I’m hoping that her sisters get their own books too.
Initial thoughts: - This story was different because they were both definitely attracted to each other from the beginning - It felt a little insta-lovey but that could be partially blamed on the fake dating aspect - I LOVED the family dynamics in this book. Like LOVED them. - Camden can go die in a hole - There were some really funny parts, and I actually laughed out loud. - These kissing scenes were 🤌🤌 - Not explicit and no swearing! - It was just such a fun Christmas romance overall and I’ll probably read it again - Dual pov was really inconsistent
This book really sounded like it would be for me, but after only a couple of chapters I couldn't take anymore. The main female character was reminiscent of the whole manic pixie dreamgirl schtick and I am not here for it.
I love a book that makes me laugh. And if it includes Christmas, even better! This one by Janette Rallison was so great. I loved it.
Scarlet is the main female character. I loved how she was a bit wild and carefree. That was fun to read about, but it got her in a lot of trouble. Scarlet is taking a boyfriend home for Christmas. Her grandmother is dying and wants to see the girls she raised happy and cared for. The only problem is the actor that Scarlet was going to have be her boyfriend cancels at the very last minute.
Enter Liam. He’s sort of willing to be Scarlet’s pretend boyfriend. Until he sees her picture, then he knows that he wants to do it. There were so many funny things that happen to Liam because of this decision. I loved how the two of them fall into the house while having their first kiss. Liam really was a great guy to put up with all of the craziness.
This is such a great rom-com. I need Scarlet’s sister’s stories ASAP!
“The man is in the wrong career. He could sell math.”
A fake boyfriend is one thing, but a hot one that follows crazy, impulsive ideas? Yes!
Scarlet and her sisters want to fulfill their dying grandmother's wish for them to find love, so cue the fake boyfriend. Although there's a slight instant attraction between Liam and Scarlet, the foundation was laid earlier and the sparks sizzle like grease off a hot frying pan and are hot enough to burn!
True to this author's style, the reader is treated to not only swoon galore, but also to humorous incidents and heart melting situations. I love the light and fun Christmas romances and this one delivered.
Great characters, wonderful setting, and wickedly funny and charming dialogue.
This is a fun Christmas fake relationship story. I adored Liam and I laughed out loud at the mistaken career conversation with reference to tools used. Hahahaha. I do love to be entertained. I read through this one quickly and smiled a lot.
Scarlet starts off as superficial and selfish but as I got to know her she became more likable. The story has a lot of funny stuff going on. There is more heart to this book than I expected. I really enjoyed this one and appreciated the epilogue.
***Squeal*** This book made me laugh out loud at times and sigh at other times. I had such a hard time putting it down. What a fun book to read to relieve stress at Christmastime or any other time!
If you have a sense of humor, you’ll love this book.
I always know I’m getting the whole package with a Janette Rallison book; hilarious scenarios, steamy kisses, characters you care to read about, and good editing. This has taken the number one spot as my holiday favorite.
Super super cute and laugh-out-loud funny. I can basically use those words to describe all of Rallison's books, which is why she's my go-to author for feeling generally content with the world. I love her characters and their growth and the humor and romance she puts in all her stories. It makes the world seem brighter, more sparkly, and a whole lot more fun. If you need a feel-good story, pick up literally any of her books and thank me later.
An Unexpected Boyfriend for Christmas is fun and delicious. You should read it. Scarlet is adorable and frustrating. Liam is way too good to be true. But I sure love him. I’m happy Scarlet does too. But there were moments when I wasn’t sure if they would ever get together. Thank goodness, they did!
I'd already read a couple of Christmas time fake relationship stories when I got this one, but I soon realized this one was not like the others. I laughed so much while reading this one. I admit I had to suspend belief at one point, but it is fiction after all and since I read to escape reality, I decided to roll with it. Janette Rallison hadn't steered me wrong yet.
This will probably be Scarlet's grandma's last Christmas and when grandma asks the girls to bring their boyfriends home for Christmas then she'll just have to find a boyfriend. Sounds innocent enough, right? Bring a guy home for a week and after the holidays she'll just tell everyone they broke up. But when Scarlet's cousin shows up with Scarlet's ex-boyfriend and they announce their engagement, that starts the ball rolling and soon one lie leads to another...
I thought the funniest part was when Scarlet gets her fake boyfriend's (Liam) profession wrong--he's a prosthodontist (doesn't quite roll off the tongue does it?), but she forgets and says he's a proctologist. When Liam's parents arrive they don't know about this tidbit of information, and the conversations that followed made me laugh out loud.
I couldn't believe Liam agreed to the scheme and that even when it got completely out of control NO ONE said anything or even thought about calling a stop to the whole charade. The dress rehearsal with Father Joe (director playing fake minister) was hilarious!! Scarlet did wear on my nerves with her fear of being in a committed relationship but as she was told "Love is a choice" and thankfully she chose to stay with Liam. She wasn't her mother. If you're looking for a laugh out loud romantic comedy look no further.
I received a complimentary copy to review. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.
Scarlet is a 23-year-old model who has not had a serious relationship since her high school boyfriend dumped her when she was 17. Because of that traumatic experience and the fact that her mother has been married five times, Scarlet doesn't believe it is possible to be happily married.
Liam is a handsome dentist, who is finishing his residency and is around 30 years old. He has volunteered, at the request of his sister, who is a close friend of Scarlet and her two sisters, to pretend to be Scarlet's boyfriend during the family celebration of Christmas at her grandmother's house. Scarlett and her sisters have come up with this wacky plan in order to reassure her dying grandmother that Scarlet will be well taken care of after her beloved grandmother is gone.
This is a cute version of the classic fake-boyfriend plot. Liam is a wonderful, cinnamon-roll MMC. Scarlet is very confused about love, but gradually, over the course of this dramedy, Liam wins her heart, in spite of herself.
Because this story is Christmas themed, it is fun to read during the Christmas season.
As is the case for all of JR's novels, whether YA or adult, there is no sensuality beyond kissing, no foul language, and no drunkenness.
I loved this book! So cute and cozy😍 My one complaint is how Liam kept the fact that the wedding officiated dude was legit and went through with the marriage…kinda red flags to me. lol. Other than that, Liam and Scarlet are total couple goals! Totally recommend!!!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Pages: 267 Language/TW: 2/10 Format I read: Kindle Unlimited Genre: Romance Would I recommend to others: yes!
Scarlet Hughes can’t get a date. Her frenzied life as a model precludes her from taking time to develop a meaningful relationship. To placate her ailing grandmother, Scarlet does what any sensible modern person living in LA would do—she hires an actor to play the part of her loving boyfriend for Christmas. Of course, because that’s what normal people do. Only in LA. Unfortunately for Scarlet, her pseudo date lands a part in an off-Broadway play and withdraws from the agreement hours before they are set to leave. He breaks up with her via text—that’s low, even for a fake boyfriend. Not cool, brah.
Scarlet’s sister Hazel manages to come through with a last-minute replacement. His name is Liam Brooks, and he is about to complete his Dental residency. Liam only agrees to engage in the charade because he has no desire to go home to his own family. With his parents divorcing, he doesn’t want to compound family acrimony with the normal stress that accompanies the holidays. Needless to say, Liam finds himself falling for Scarlet. Scarlet also begins to develop feelings for Liam. What started as an arrangement of convenience might blossom into something else.
An Unexpected Boyfriend for Christmas sounds like it could be the plot of a Hallmark Movie. In fact, it might very well have been since they seem to produce enough of such fluff to run them from June to January without a repeat. It’s not a very original concept. The story takes a long time to get off the ground and there are way too many segues. The characters themselves are wooden and unrealistic for most of the story—almost like marionette puppets. It takes quite a while to find some depth. Despite a plodding start, I kept on reading and was pleased to see that there was more to this story.
After meeting her ersatz hubby to be, Scarlet gradually gets to know him and realizes that he is beyond the surface shine. Liam is interesting, and she finds herself seeing real potential in him. Liam also starts to fall for her. This complicates the arrangement, as Liam is now forced to consider how he will feign feelings for someone while at the same time coming to terms with the possibility of those feelings being real. Their budding relationship is almost like my feelings about this book. It was tedious at first, but it got better.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
An Unexpected Boyfriend for Christmas by Jannette Rallison. I have only read one of Janette's books before, it was part of the Wyle Away Ranch series. (loved that series). I didn't connect this Janette to that series when I found this book on Booksriens or when reading this. To my surprise, I found reference to the previous via the acknowledgment at the end. Pleasantly surprised:)
Ok, back to An Unexpected Boyfriend for Christmas~Wow, I totally loved this book and I found that I just could not put it down. It was easy to read and it's a clean romance, with LOL moments as well tissues needed towards the end. An Unexpected Boyfriend for Christmas is just a very good read that keeps you guessing to the very end. I really enjoyed this story, it had some ups and downs together with the humor and great characters. An easy read and of course best of all it all sorts out to a happy ever after! I highly recommend this to you all.
This is my honest review, thank you, Janette, for this amazing story and as per the acknowledgment at the end of the book I would also like to thank Melinda Carrol and Jamie Hixon too. I can not wait to read the other books in the series. I would also like an update on Jane and Camden! (if possible:):))
Tropes: ❄️ Fake-dating; ❄️ Love at first sight; ❄️ Mother issues; ❄️ Fake-engagement; ❄️ He falls first.
Trigger-warnings (be wary please): ❄️ Death of a relative (explicit) from cancer; ❄️ Divorce; ❄️ Unwanted sexual attention.
"An Unexpected Boyfriend for Christmas" tells the story of Scarlet, one of three sisters (Vi and Hazel are the other two) who is known for making rash decisions and for her impulsiveness. So, when she tells everyone her (fake) boyfriend, Liam and her are engaged, everyone is (I mean, are they really?) surprised. What's funny is, it's all fake... Until it's not.
This book was the perfect book to snuggle up with some tea and choco cookies in bed. Easy to read and follow (a few grammatical errors but not very noticeable) and super fast-paced. The reason I didn't give more stars was because I didn't feel a connection between these two characters: I felt like they were just put there and their love just started out of nowhere. I believe in love at first sight but in here, things were just too rushed.
However, I loved the family dynamics, the sister trio were absolutely brilliant, I loved Hazel so much - I heard the next book is all about her - and I loved how Vi had that little innocent look about her. The grandmother 💔 it broke my heart so much, even know we knew what would happen, it triggered me because I'm so close to my own grandma and it just, you know, it's scary. But the lovely relationship this woman had with her family just warmed my heart. Also, Jane and the guy whose name we do not pronounce, hated them - even tho Jane didn't deserve what happened.
In the end, a good book for anyone who loves a small romance with a happy ending and a cinammon roll hero who falls first 💕

You know those books and movies that are completely ridiculous in the no-way-that-would-ever-happen-in-real-life kind of way, yet somehow you just can’t enjoying every minute? That’s how this book was for me! Plus, I really don’t care if I don’t believe something in a book would happen in real life as long as I’m entertained. It’s a book, not real life after all!
Anyway, Scarlet is spending Christmas with her family for what will be her grandmother’s last holiday season. She and her two sisters want to make their grandma happy, and nothing would make her happier than seeing them all settled with good men. Clearly coming up with a fake boyfriend is the solution, right? But Scarlet may end up with more than she bargained for…
I enjoyed this book! It made me laugh and cry, and I liked that it starts around Christmas, but ends in the spring. I want to talk about what I thought would never happen in real life, but it would spoil things, so I’ll just let you experience it for yourself. And maybe you’ll feel differently, and think I’m wrong! There are two more books in this series that are written by two other authors, and I’m looking forward to reading them!
Very torn on the rating, it’s definitely 2-3 star worthy. First, there is ZERO spice in this book, you have been warned. Second, 2 chapters and the title are all you got for “Christmas” when it comes to this book. Truthfully it’s not that much of a holiday read. If you are interested due to the cover/title/back blurb, then know this, you’re going to be reading a fake dating / insta love story. The Christmas theme is barely a real tie in and the characters are frustrating as all heck. The fmc has a lot of conflicting inner monologues that you wish she would just get off her chest and see a therapist. Now on to the good bits, the banter between the two is fairly cute. I did enjoy their dialogues since they were filled with witty jokes and metaphors. I just think the plot of this book could have been cleaned up more and had a better execution.
I don't know how I missed this one, but I stumbled across this last night and realized I'd never read it. Normally I read Rallison's books as soon as they release!
Anyway, this was such a cute, funny, romantic book. I liked the characters and the storyline was fun. Ms. Rallison knows how to make fun embarrassing moments! Scarlett has a lot of baggage and I wanted to shake her a few times, but she's endearing and you can't help but like her. Liam is such a good guy, chill & goes with the flow. They are so cute together!
This book is so utterly ridiculous and unbelievable and I loved it. It is Hallmark movie perfection! All the absurdness, the impractical situations, and romance! Was there really any romance? Not really! But are all Hallmark movie romances? Nope! Did it even make sense? Nope! Would some simple conversations make a difference? You betcha! Must have caught me on a good day.... Very good when I just need a palate cleanser!! Lol
This story grew on me. Romcoms always make us suspend reality (probably why we like them) and I think Christmas romcoms do this even more. The premise is over the top and unrealistic but I ended up really liking Liam and Scarlet as characters and together. I also like that the relationship really had time to build and while still fast, didn’t at all feel like insta-love.
This book was cute and fun but the premise was too much. Fake boyfriend is one thing but planning a fake wedding to appease your grandmother is over the top. Janette Rallison wrote one of my very favorite books when I was a teenager, Deep Blue Eyes and Other Lies, so I keep reading her books hoping they will be just as great. The last two I read both featured a model and a doctor as the main characters.
I'm giving this book five stars because it didn't make me do any uncomfortable research which would make the TSA pull me out of the security line for additional screening. I can't say that for all of my books. I had to research weapons and the White House blueprints for the Slayers series. I'm pretty sure I'm on a list for that one.
