This is Romantic Suspense. This book had me pulled in from the very beginning, and I did not want to put it down. This book is fill of action and suspense, and it is set in the wilderness. I love the wilderness setting, and I love all the action and suspense. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters where so great, and I love them. The romance was good, but this book is mostly action and suspense with a little romance put in. The ending was so good. Great Read. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Love Inspired Suspense) or author (Maggie K Black) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

Jeff Connor is a former Master Corporal who has retreated from life, living with his daughter in a remote cabin in the wilds of Canada. Quinn Dukes is a wilderness guide who is taking a group of people on a survival trip. Former coworkers who did not get along, neither of them realize that danger and an evil person will cause their worlds to collide.

This is a captivating romantic thriller that will keep you guessing. The plot is full of twists and turns and includes kidnapping, hostage-taking, murder, and intrigue. The storyline is very clever and well put together. I thought I had it all figured out, but I didn't. This really impresses me, because usually I can figure out who the "bad guy" is way before the end of the book.. There is a Christian message of faith and relying on God in both good times and bad. The topic of PTSD is also part of the story. Fans of thrillers and wilderness adventures with a bit of romance will enjoy this novel.

I received a free copy of this book from Harlequin via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and my opinions are my own.

"Surviving the Wilderness" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. Quinn is a skilled wilderness guide who learned some of her skills from Jeff before starting her own company. Jeff had a crush on Quinn, but his last serious relationship ended with the woman telling him that he was garbage and hiding the fact that she was pregnant. He doesn't feel worthy of a loving relationship with an amazing, talented woman like Quinn. He's now caring for his young daughter when she's kidnapped. Quinn's wilderness tour group gets caught in the middle of the armed kidnapping, and she helps Jeff go after his daughter.

Quinn and Jeff admired each other and worked well together. They really were better together as Jeff was extremely impulsive and often charged into a situation rather than thinking out a plan or working with others. (This also caused him problems when in the military.) Jeff realized that he needed to change if he was going to be a good father and a good husband, so he asked God's help with becoming a better man and with rescuing his daughter. The suspense came from the attacks by the bad guys, the danger to the child and others, and the danger created just by being in the wilderness. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this exciting novel.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

My blurb…
A sweet little girl has been kidnapped along with her puppy. I’m a sucker for little kids & puppy dogs. Add danger in multiple forms and a military father — you have to read to save them, right? Then there is a stubborn & determined wilderness guide (oh, she’s beautiful too) who risks her life for Master Corporal Jess Connor’s daughter. Can they save little Addison & Butterscotch without getting killed …

My review…
From the beginning, the characters are appealing. Quinn worked with Jeff previously and she admired his expertise but his constant corrections to her work was not pleasant. Running into him while guiding a group on a wilderness adventure was fortuitous, after all he saves her from drowning, but …

The danger starts immediately. Someone cut her rappelling rope. And why is Jeff and his brother living deep in the woods with Jeff’s little girl, Addison? By the way, she is a charmer. And you already know I’m a sucker for little puppy dogs. Turns out so is Quinn. She and Addison bound immediately.

Jeff has problems other than the danger to his daughter. Here the book shows how strong men can fight admitting they may have PTSD. The dangers mount and come from various sides from the beginning to the end.

However, Surviving the Wilderness has a couple of glaring plot errors which I will report in my comments to the publishers. Hopefully they will be fixed before the publish date. One deals with timing — too much happening shoved into less than an hour. Another with a gun suddenly available when there wasn’t one before.

The writing is okay — not quite at the level of other Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense books I’ve reviewed previously on this site. I just felt the book was rushed into an ARC when it needed a bit more editing. My feeling is if I can spot these easily, surely an editor should be able to do so. Surviving the Wilderness is a nice read — you’ll keep wondering what on earth will happen to these people next! A solid 3.5 stars read which will be 3 stars on sites only showing round numbers.

I received a complimentary e-ARC copy of Surviving the Wilderness from the publisher, HARLEQUIN – Romance (U.S. & Canada), Love Inspired Suspense, via NetGalley. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Corporal Jeff Conner is dealing with a lot right now with what he's dealt with at the job and now finding out he's a father and the mother is dead. Quinn knew Jeff in the past working as a wilderness guide. Imagine her surprise when he manages to help her out in a tight spot in the middle of the woods. Things get even more complicated when someone kidnap's Jeff's daughter and Jeff and Quinn will do everything they can to find that child and find out who is behind it.

Whew this book was a trip. From the moment the book starts it jumps right into the action and from then on I was hooked. I loved that there was so much going on. Pretty close calls and plenty of mishaps. It was so interesting seeing the two work together to get things done and when things looked grim they never gave up giving eachother hope with the help of faith and it was such an interesting ride. This book was also a clean romance which I appreciate I mean there was hardly any time to get close but still loved that as well. This was such a great book and I really enjoyed it can't wait to see more from this author.

I really wanted to like this book. There's just TOO much wrong with it.

First, I think this is part of a series, but that information is withheld from us, which always makes me all shades of irate. If it's a SERIES? Mark it as one - either on the book, or on Goodreads, hello. 'Undercover Protection' is at least one of the books before this (also NOT marked as part of a series). Be aware, going in. There'll be references to people you don't know, places you aren't acquainted with, and character connections you could care less about but are made to feel stupid for not having read, first. (Grrrr.)

We start our critique on Pg 12, with Jeff seeing Quinn fall down a 30ft waterfall - he starts praying to the Lord for help both for her and for him as he attempts a rescue. Except that the ENTIRE BOOK is about how Jeff has no faith, doesn't pray, and doesn't believe. So... what is that heartfelt and wordy prayer about? He does it again on Pg 63: "God I don't know if you're real, it don't seem like you hear me, people are in trouble around me. Quinn is hurt, my daughter is kidnapped, please save my little girl. We're in desperate need of Your help." If he doesn't have faith, doesn't believe in God... WHY is he constantly praying? It's Maggie Black's reaction to a situation, not that of an unbeliever like Jeff. And yes, 'God help' is a prayer of an unbeliever in crisis, but these wordy, christian-ese prayers? Seriously? Out of a guy who is dismissive of his brother's God, at best? Really?

Pg 126 Quinn asks him to pray w/her, he says 'I've never been much on praying, but I'll give it a try'... but he JUST PRAYED twice, earlier. See above. Do the editors even READ these things before approving the books? Because it makes no sense. It's as if Maggie's acting like he's making a first attempt at praying r'something. And we already know that's BS.

But pg 66 he's offended by Rose praying, is repeatedly berating his brother's faith. So after praying THREE times, he's again not okay with prayer. Aieyeyeyeyeee...

And Maggie does know that God doesn't hear the prayer of an unbeliever, right? (John 9:31). Jeff hasn't come to repentance, so God ain't hearing him. For that matter? Jeff *NEVER* comes to a saving knowledge of Christ through the blood/redemption/salvation process in this book. Ever. So much for 'Love, Inspired'.

The story itself is ridiculous. Della (who's dead, already) had a baby with Jeff, whilst hating his guts. This makes TOTAL sense - because everyone sleeps with the guy they hate the most, right? She hated him from moment one, because he reminds her of her controlling, manipulative, psychotic father - nevermind that Jeff is NOT manipulative, psychotic, or controlling. But then she gets in a relationship with Paul, who *IS* manipulative, psychotic, and controlling... but that's okay. And she - in a very manipulative, controlling, psychotic move - tells Paul the baby is his, and doesn't want Jeff anywhere near the baby. Whatevs, but it's lame. Badly lame.

So Jeff has self-confidence issues, because Della assured him he's a douche and doesn't deserve to live, r'something. But when he finds out the DNA test says he's the daddy, he fights for custody of his daughter - except Paul screamed in his face that he WOULD be taking the kid away from him. So as all rational people do, Jeff buys a secluded cabin miles from the grid, hooks up state-of-the-art security (!??!?!) that he runs on generators, and holes up, all paranoid.

Makes. TOTAL. Sense.

Meanwhile, Quinn is one of four girls raised by a single father who secluded them on a farm survivalist-style, homeschooling them. Already this has *SO* many issues. First, you'd need to be independently wealthy to manage four daughters and homeschool ALL of them at the same time as a single parent. Ex-survivalist mom of five who homeschools speaking, here. And LaCROSSE?!!? He taught them Lacrosse, seriously?!?! And hockey and baseball? What the farts?! Wouldn't he be teaching them to sugarbush, handle animal husbandry, take apart and clean rifles, etc? GAH, it's horrible writing. Who can afford hockey?!?!? On a non-existent income whilst homeschooling in a secluded... Y'know? Nevermind.

Bad guys show up at Quinn's camp full of travelers (signed up with her adventure tour business), and they wave guns around, taking Quinn and Jeff's daughter captive. Jeff's grappling with gorilla mask guy, who breaks away and runs blindly into the woods. Clown mask guy - at camp near where Jeff/Gorilla were fighting jumps on an ATV. Jeff chases the ATV, and is CLOSER to it than Gorilla... but somehow Gorilla - who ran off in the wrong direction, manages to circle back and get on the ATV before Jeff gets to it to stop it? What the what?!?!?

Quinn gets dumped in a cave that Jeff manages to find and get in before it's detonated to cave in... and they dig out... but from the MIDDLE of the pile. Maggie writes it like a rock wall you can pull stones from and get out - most cave-ins are more rock slides you have to shimmy up and work at the top of. It's... wrong.

Then they're in a canoe with a drone firing on them... and Maggie writes that Quinn stands up and calls the drone TO HER IN THE CANOE, and uses her paddle to thwap it into a rock outcropping. WHY ON EARTH would the drone go to her, again...??? Because it wants to play the part of baseball to her oar/bat? She also writes (still pg 129) that 'the smell of gunfire was in the air'. Um... there's a RAINSTORM pouring down on them, they're in a raging river, and it's windy as heck - they would NOT smell gunfire, hello.

Pg 137 has them paddling with driftwood in a canoe patched with duct tape that's filled with water, against the strong currents... this after capsizing and hauling a full boat to shore while swimming fully clothed in a storm... AFTER digging out of a cave-in, running I don't know how many miles, and rappelling off a waterfall. WITH. WHAT. ENERGY?! And remember, Quinn was beaten and drugged, and is supposed to be flushing her system to get the remains out of her body... which Maggie forgets and never mentions.

NONE of this would be possible. At all.

They find the kid, but her voice 'sounds like it's coming from all around them', until Jeff admits he's grateful his kid acts like a brat and is obnoxiously loud and demanding... THEN he can magically pinpoint where she is. How that works, I'm not sure, but okay.

As for the romance part of this 'inspirational romance'? It's barely there. He had the hots for her years ago. She had the hots for him years ago. But he now thinks he's crap and doesn't deserve a woman, so while he sings her praises (beautiful, stunning, brave, amazing, incredible, etc.)... he mostly is about beating himself up and walking away. Which gets tedious.

Yes, Jeff is handsome, strong, ex-mil, brave, smart, and dreamy. He's also demanding, self-absorbed (in a negative way), lacking in faith, and treated Quinn like crap the last time they were together... NOT at all attractive to me as a reader. He's one giant problem, start to finish. I just didn't feel it between them, at all.

So yeah. I wish I'd liked the book, but... if I'd been Quinn's campers? I'd have been pissed that she went off and left paying customers alone in the wilderness with no guide and no assurance (only suggestion) of help coming. In the middle of a tour. It's not a matter of 'leave the 99 to get the 1', either - the 99 were safe in the parable, these people were NOT. And it wasn't okay.

It's also not okay to be in a relationship with an unbeliever, but... it's no big - it's not like this is an INSPIRATIONAL book, or anything...

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Surviving the Wilderness. I'm a big fan of Maggie's books. I'm always thrilled to receive one of her books in the mail. This story is well-written, action-packed, and full of intrigue. I know you are going to love it.

Wilderness Guide Quinn Dukes is leading a group on a wilderness tour. She left the group for a few minutes to climb down a waterfall. Someone shook the rope, and a man with a troll-like mask threw the rope over as she fell into the water, after being rescued by a man she never wanted to see again. She returned to her tour when with a loud noise her tour was attacked and a young girl was kidnapped. Quinn followed the kidnappers to rescue the child. She is also taken by the kidnappers

Canadian Ranger Master Corporal Jeff Conner sees a woman climbing down a waterfall. She falls and he jumps into the water to rescue her. It was Quinn the most irritating woman he knew. As he is talking to her his alarm goes off someone has broken into his cabin. Someone has taken his daughter. He will do everything in his power to find his daughter and the man who kidnapped her even work with Quinn.

A terrifying journey to find his child and the people who had taken her. God has a plan for these two broken souls. A plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan for peace and not for destruction. Give Him your heart and watch Him turn your life around even in this time of political chaos.

Surviving the Wilderness by Maggie Black is a romantic suspense set in the wilderness. Quinn runs her own adventure company. She is almost through with one of her overnight hiking expeditions when things start going wrong.

Jeff and Quinn worked together for a short time at another adventure company. Since they last saw each other, Jeff has found out that he has a daughter and is raising her after her mom passed away. Jeff is on edge thinking that someone is trying to get to him and his daughter.

This story is more adventure than romance. Jeff and Quinn have sparks but they must decide if they like each other first.

When his young daughter is taken, Jeff Connor must join forces with wilderness guide Quinn Duke as they race to bring his little girl back safe.

A fast paced, high stakes adventure that finds Quinn and Jeff battling not only the elements but those who are threatening Addison. Engaging and easy to follow, this was a suspenseful adventure I didn't want to put down! There was a lot going, I liked how Quinn and Jeff got to know and respect each other through this adventure.

Overall, this was an exciting read with great characters, strong faith and high stakes. Quickly drew me in and kept me guessing. Definitely one I'd recommend!

“Surviving the Wilderness” by Maggie K Black is aptly titled. Quinn Dukes is a wilderness guide guiding a group in the wilderness when she and her group inadvertently become pons in a madman’s revenge!
Master Corporal Jeff Connor and Quinn Dukes used to work together as guides and didn’t exactly hit if off, however now their lives are intertwined when his young daughter, Addison, is kidnapped. They must work together to rescue her.

Maggie K Black is an author of well-written stories packed with suspense and action. She has good characters, storyline, and this story kept me guessing almost to the very end!

“Surviving the Wilderness” by Maggie K. Black was a good read. This book started with non-stop action and continued until the end! The characters were well developed and very likeable. There was a big twist at the end that I never saw coming. I recommend this book if you enjoy good, clean, romantic suspense novels.

Love the way things get resolved. Five stars. The writing needed a good editor, but didn't get one. Mistakes were so numerous they ruined the book for me. One star. The plot was a bit contrived. I enjoyed the rapid pacing. Average: three stars. And please fix that painfully running sentence on the first page!

This book is action packed from the first pages and that momentum held through till the last. I enjoyed everything Ms. Black wove into this suspense and how she slowly built a romance as well. While it's obvious there are links to previous books (Quinn's sisters), this story holds up well as a stand-alone. I'm looking forward to reading more from Ms. Black.

Amazing book, filled with twists and turns. It was nice to meet up with some characters from previous books. I’m hoping Rose gets the next book to keep up the Duke sisters. Hopefully, Vic will be a future story also since he needs a second chance at love. Great read.

I am not sure who or what I appreciate more, the stories, the authors or Love Inspired. They bring us good stories packed full of ups and downs, but most of they are clean stories with God in the center.

It started fast and the momentum continued throughout.

I found the main characters to both be likable as well as humble. Both of them are in the midst of walking through brokenness and facing the adversity in the wilderness has allowed them to heal together. The book was full of suspense and action and it kept me interested throughout. The ending was surprising and did not disappoint. I would recommend to those who like clean romantic suspense novels.

I was given a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review and opinion.
