Everyone is capable of accomplishing extraordinary things. If you share this belief, then this book was written for you.
In business and in life, handing over the reins to others is inevitable. Everyone will eventually leave their team, retire from being the CEO, or see their kids leave home and lead their own lives. Leading from the Jumpseat enables us to embrace this inevitability. Leading from the Jumpseat is a metaphor for how we can choose to lead. It's about the journey we take so we can hand over control to others, who are then equipped to continue forward.
Peter Docker, co-author of Find Your Why and formerly a founding Igniter at Simon Sinek Inc., delivers the message that leadership is about lifting people up and giving them the space they need so that, when the time is right, they can take the lead.
Drawing on his 25-year career in the Royal Air Force, and over 14 years spent partnering with businesses around the world, Peter's goal is to inspire others to Lead from the Jumpseat. Jumpseat Leadership is a way of interacting with people that will enhance performance in any given situation - during normal business, times of crisis, and life in general. Becoming a Jumpseat Leader takes practice and this book is your practical guide to handing over control.
Commitment * When something is important enough: Tapping into the power of drivers. * The difference between a stand and a position, and why it matters. * What Commitment looks like. * Finding the signal amongst the noise. * The role of Fear, Love, and Courage. * Hope over optimism, and the leader's role.
Humble Confidence * When ego gets in our way - and the source of the antidote. * How to be significant. * Being yourself. * Leading when we don't know the answer and empowering the collective genius.
Belonging * Nurturing a sense of belonging - and why that matters. * Responsibility over accountability. * When the pressure is on: response over reaction. * Handing over control at scale. * Four Red Lights Point - when to take back control
Peter is passionate about enabling people to unlock their natural talents. He teaches leadership that is focused on commitment and human connection, harnessing the collective wisdom of teams to generate extraordinary outcomes. He draws on examples from his previous industry, flying, and military careers to explain powerful concepts that can be applied in any business.
Peter worked with Simon Sinek for over 7 years and was one of the founding 'Igniters' on Simon's team. He took his years of practical experience to co-author Find Your Why: A Practical Guide for Discovering Purpose for You and Your Team, with Simon and David Mead. Published in September 2017, it has been translated into more than 25 languages and has sold over 460,000 copies.
In December 2019, Peter stepped away from Simon's team to focus on sharing his wider insights into how organizations thrive. His new book, Leading From The Jumpseat: How to Create Extraordinary Opportunities by Handing Over Control, was published in October 2021. A trained leadership consultant and executive coach, Peter's commercial and industry experience has been at the most senior levels in sectors including oil & gas, construction, mining, pharmaceuticals, banking, television, film, media, print, hospitality, manufacturing and services - across 92 countries. His clients include Google, Four Seasons Hotels, Accenture, American Express, ASOS, EY, NBC Universal and over 100 more.
Peter served for 25 years as a Royal Air Force senior officer, has been a Force Commander during combat flying operations and has seen service across the globe. His career has spanned from professional pilot to leading an aviation training and standards organization, teaching postgraduates at the UK's Defence College, to flying the British prime minister around the world. Peter has also led multibillion-dollar international procurement projects and served as a crisis manager and former international negotiator for the UK government.
Peter's done a great job at weaving together the principles and distinctions that make for extraordinary leadership with clear business examples and his own riveting flying stories from his experience in the RAF.
The exercises and summaries at the back of each chapter are great, but I'd love to see an accompanying workbook to give even more ways to put these ideas into practice.
A book on how to lead with love and not fear, with compassion and not intimidation, with altruism and not ego. Written by an accomplished pilot who led many challenging missions and learned that lifting others up is the best way to lead.
I would give it 5* if it were shorter; the key concepts are reiterated many times in the book.
