5 - "If we only get one night... I want to spend it inside you." Stars!

Back in the day, when I had 20/20 vision and laughed in the face of a good night’s sleep, I’d have pulled an all-nighter to finish Dirty Secret. Alas, I now need glasses, and my body literally shuts down now when sleep beckons, so it just wasn’t to be on this occasion. That said, this is hands down the best book I have read by this author so far, and if I could have done, I’d have stayed up all the hours to finish it.

I keep asking myself what it is about her that’s got me so tied up…

And bearing in mind it’s written in my least favourite style (1st POV) it just highlights how good I found Vaughn & Allie’s story. I love the BF’s little sister trope, so twisting it to Big brothers worst enemy just added more to the story for me, because you get all the sexiness of the forbidden, with even more risk that it could literally cause a nuclear explosion when the two guys meet each other on the ice or in the dressing room, if the secret gets out. Something Vaughn is desperate to avoid, in order to secure a contract on another team. But also something that seems to lessen in importance with the more time he spends with Allie.

"I tried to stay away…"

"…I tried to want you too… But it’s no use."

Loved the story, the couple, the secondary characters, the chemistry, everything about this book really, and if this is the quality we can expect going forwards with the Slayers Hockey I cannot wait for more. Dirty Hookup is due next and I hope we don’t have to wait too long for it!

3.5 ⭐️

Not the most original and gripping story there is but it was exactly what I needed after a very angsty read.

I loved the hero and his willingness to forgo any pride or preconceived idea in order to make sure he gets the girl.

The story was very simple but it was entertaining and it provided a reprieve from the heavier stuff I was reading.

I’m on a major reading break. I feel nothing and I’ve started at least four books I’ll be coming back to whenever I’m in a better mood because I hate all I read.

I started this book a week ago and made it to 40%, I sat down today and finished it, that’s why I’m giving it four stars, I finished it and I almost (almost) cry for them at one point (which only reassures me I’m on a crazy level, because it wasn’t worth crying for)

It was a sports novel, but at least the Hero wasn’t swoony/good/God bless his heart kind of hero, and he was an asshole and selfish sometimes (I’m telling you, another level of craziness I’m reaching), it wasn’t the most original idea either, and although the heroine was good, I would have loved her more if she had punched his brother at some point during the story, but nobody’s perfect.

Anyway, probably a 3.5 stars read but I’m rounding up because I want to and because I finished it whilst I couldn’t finish any book I’ve started the last two weeks.

I am so in love with this story!
It hooked me from the start and didn’t let go. I fell hard for a moody, trouble-making hockey player named Vaughn.

*sigh*
Vaughn...so grumpy and scowly and antisocial...and caring and big-hearted and sexy AF.

Natalie...so unknowingly beautiful inside and out. So trusting and sweet, refusing to cause problems for anyone.

Seeing her and not being able to have her, touch her, or talk to her is pure torture for Vaughn.

Ever since that one night in Vancouver months ago...a delicious, passion-filled night...he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about her.

But she snuck away, while he was sleeping.
With nothing but A NOTE.

He always kept an eye out for her.
Wanting to find her.

She purposely stayed away.
Avoiding him.

Then they finally run into each other.
Panic consumes Natalie.
Curiosity & anger flares within Vaughn.

And yet...sparks fly and sizzle all around them. Their chemistry undeniable and combustible. I love these two together so much! They shouldn’t be together, but dammit, they have to be!

The author did a fantastic job with their story, making me feel everything, see everything. Reading this was like watching a movie play out in front of me, one I never wanted to turn off.

Fun parts had me smiling BIG.
Steamy scenes had my heart racing.
Heartwarming moments had me swooning and sighing happily like a romance reader should.

I can’t recommend this book enough.
This sexy hockey romcom has everything I love in a well-written romance novel. SO GOOD! I’m pretty sure I highlighted half the book.

Damn ... she’s done it again!

You guys, seriously, if you haven’t read Mira’s work before, I implore you to do so immediately. She writes the best sexy, feel-good romances!! #TRUST She continues to impress me with every book she writes. I really enjoyed the little sister trope with a twist in this story.

Here’s the gist: Allie has been crushing on Vaughn for like ever! Vaughn is Allie’s brother’s number one enemy. Enemy since like forever! Allie grabs the opportunity for a one-night sex-a-thon with Vaughn and of course keeps her identity from him because brother’s enemy and all that. But it’s no big deal because she, her brother and Vaughn would never be in the same place at the same time ….. well, let the games begin!

What an emotionally charged story this turned out to be. It was a deliciously sexy and off the charts feel-good but oh so damn emotional. My heart went thru a blender with this one, for both Allie and Vaughn. I’m not going to give you plot points to the story but be ready. Your heart will soar but it will also explode into a million pieces, repeatedly. It was glorious you guys.

This is my first Mira Lyn Kelly book and not my last. I love hockey and combined with amazing characters, romance and the want and heat...Le sigh

Kelly packed in the emotions and I felt all the feels... the tears were real experiencing this journey of Vaughn and Natalie. In life, you work hard and want to accomplish all your goals and dreams and bring #1. But sometimes putting someone first is more important than ego and I loved watching Vaughn realize this and realize sometimes things are more important...like love.

This was a great start to a new series and I’m looking forward to reading more. ❤️

"'You look at me like you are right now. (...) And all the good intentions in the world aren’t enough to stop me.'"
So, not the first book of Mira's I've read. Not by a long shot. But this one is going to leave a mark.

"If that's what I want? She has to ask?"
Vaughn, the hockey player who's just become part of a new team and he doesn't really feel like part of it at all. Plus, he has his own nemesis in the form of Greg Baxter, who everyone absolutely loves.

I ADORE Vaughn. Yes, he is a bit on the broody, grumpy side, very focused on his goals. Just all the things I love.
And Natalie! I like that she's not a pushover and she follows her own passions - and stands up to her brother.

And so they meet in Vancouver and they spend the night together. It was a one-time thing but it left a mark on both of them. So what happens when he moves to Chicago to find her there - and, not only that, but also finds out she's Baxter's younger sister?
Yep, all bets are off.

"'Haven't you learned? If something's important to me... I'm relentless. And Allie, there's nothing more important to me than you.'"
Vaughn is the dreamiest thing for me - the driven, sort of antisocial guy who knows who he wants, and he tries to steer clear of it nonetheless, until he can't anymore. And Natalie is trying to run away from something we all realize is more than physical, until there's no escape.

These two are meant to be. And I love them together, and the way they connect. I love that they see each other for who they are, and love each other for it.

This is a book about a guy that's rough around the edges, but so incredibly sweet where it counts. And a girl who's in over her head and totally doesn't see him coming. Two people who are absolutely perfect for each other, and who ultimately realize they're what's missing in each other's lives.

I'll go out on a limb and say this is the best hockey series ever - hockey, with all the feels.

Mira Lyn Kelly is an amazing writer. These characters are something else. And this was the first time I really connected with the guy and not so much with the girl. But it can't be helped... Vaughn is just special. And so is this book.
Can't wait to read the rest of the series!

4.5 Stars!!!

Seriously, I have no idea what my obsession is with hockey romance novels?? I live in South Texas!!! As ridiculous as it is I cannot get enough of them.

I completely forgot that I had read about Greg Baxter in DIRTY PLAYER. I kept thinking he seemed familiar…LOL. This book is about his younger sister, Natalie and Greg’s rival and arch nemesis since high school, Vaughn Vassar.

Growing up in the shadow of her brother’s climb to be a professional hockey player and now his success, has caused Allie to steer clear of hockey players as possible dating options since she will no longer let her dreams be a back seat to anyone else’s career. Her parents never considered any of her wants or needs as she was growing up and it has really shaped her thinking as an adult. She has had a crush on Vaughn since high school and figured there was no harm in a one night stand while she was in another country. She had no clue he would end up being traded to her brother’s team.

Vaughn is HOT AF!!!! I really loved this relationship but I was extremely disappointed in Greg. I understand the protective big brother thing but he knows that Natalie has gotten the short end of the stick through life and you would think he would try harder to give her what she needs and wants even if he doesn’t agree with her choices.

I really loved this story!!!

7/6/2023: 3.5 stars. I wish this has more plot and less sex. Still not bad, but didn’t really impress me this time around & I’m being a little generous with my rating.

6/26/2021: 4 stars. This was just so much more than what I was expecting. It’s a very sweet story with just the right amount of angst mixed in. I absolutely loved the hero - he was totally devoted to the heroine. For a sports romance, this book was perfectly lacking in talk of bunnies, OW, the hero’s manwhore ways, etc. I appreciated that those details were omitted.

Safe; hero and heroine had a ONS 8 months prior and she ran out without giving her real name or number, no others once book starts and they meet again.

Easy quick read.
I just wish the main characters both in this book and the others in this series were little bit more
different and varied. (in everything from appearances to age etc.)
And that the sex scenes were a little bit more intense or/and with more depth and variety.
All the characters kind of blend together.
There are small difference but with a little bit more depth on the character development and chemistry......The stories would come alive on a whole other level.

Vaughn
Take care?
No fucking way that just happened.
But yeah, I’m standing on the street in front of Belfast, the spot Allie previously occupied as empty as my bed the night she skipped out.
I ought to let her go. That’s twice she’s taken off on me. Twice I felt that weird fucking pull toward a girl I barely know and twice she’s left me standing wondering what just happened.
I don’t need that shit, especially now. Except—
“Christ, Vassar, what happened to laying off Baxter?”
I turn to find my left-winger, Quinn O’Brian, behind me on the sidewalk, accusation pulsing off him. I get it. Laying Baxter out at the beginning of the season was a fuck-up. One I’ve been paying for ever since. And if I fuck up again, it fucks things for our line. It fucks the team. And while I’m basically biding my time until Oregon can pick me up, no way am I going to make this team a loser while I'm on it.
“Look, man, I just came out for a beer. I didn’t know Baxter and half the team were here.” Or Allie.
Is this a regular hangout for her?
“Yeah, and what about her?”
Her? Now he’s got my attention. “What about her? Who is she?”
“You don’t know?” He shoots me a pissy glare I’m not in the mood for. “Natalie Baxter… She’s Greg Baxter’s little sister, and she’s off limits, dipshit.”
No. Fucking. Way.

5 Vaughn and Allie Stars

Sign me up ....I'm in. There is nothing I love more than Sports romance, and specifically , Ice Hockey Romance. I am always on the lookout for a new team to read about and fall in love with and I can confirm I am somewhat smitten with The Chicago Slayers.

This is the first book which focuses on Allie (Natalie) and Vaughn. Allie is the little sister of Greg Baxter (Dirty Player)and she is strictly off limits to all his teammates. Allie has had a thing for Vaughn since he played against her brother in high school when the boys were 15. Unfortunately , Greg and Vaughn have absolutely hated one another since then and that dislike has continued into their NHL careers.

Allie and Vaughn had a night of passion one year before but she left before dawn and never told him who she was. They have both thought about each other since but when Vaughn is temporarily sent to play with the Slayers , their paths cross and suddenly that one night is not enough. There are risks though. He cannot afford to upset anyone in the team or coaching staff and is already skating on thin ice (no pun intended!) because in his first week there, he had a punch up with Greg about something else and as Greg is the Captain , he carries a lot of influence. Vaughn is determined to get back to Oregon and wants out of Chicago ASAP.

I loved the forbidden nature of their relationship. Allie stands up to her brother eventually but Greg's subsequent actions were awful and I really wanted him to pay for that more.
I think Vaughn is one of my favourite Heroes. He does not give up on his girl and I loved how he loved her. And also he is soooo passionate. Kindle freezer moments required....Vaughn is HOT.

“—something happens when we touch.”
“What?” she asks, breathless and beautiful.
“You look at me like you are right now.” I bow my head toward hers. “And all the good intentions in the world aren’t enough to stop me.”

Great start to a series. Fab secondary characters and a book that I will definitely re read.

HEA? Yes and I signed up to the newsletter to get a gorgeous bonus epilogue too.
Cheating? No. These two are solid.
Can't wait for more.....

I loved Vaughn and Natalie from the minute I started the book. I don’t think I set the book down once I started reading. From the moment Vaughn saw “Allie” at the local bar after she ghosted on him 8 months earlier, and couldn’t stop thinking of her, he thought he might get some answers from her. What he found out was that Allie was really Natalie and his hockey teammate’s little sister, so yeah totally and completely off limits. Especially since he is pretty much in a rivalry with said teammate. But there is just something about the attraction between Vaughn and Natalie (who he still refers to as Allie which is actually freaking sweet!). Neither can stay away from the other even though they try to keep their relationship a secret from the team and especially her brother. This was a fabulous book and I will definitely reread it because Vaughn and Natalie we an amazing couple and I absolutely loved this book. I can’t wait for more in this series!

Dirty Secret hit the spot perfectly for my mood. This is a hockey romance with a sweet h who's always come in second to her older brother's hockey glory, a H who only sees the h and puts her first, teammate's/archrival's younger sister drama, and alllll the sneaking around. Told in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, neither are virgins but no history - they had a ONS several months prior but no mention of anyone in between, and bc discussed/used.

Vaughn (H) has this grumpy/asshole facade that most people don't see past (and he doesn't want them to), but Natalie (h) does see the great guy that's there. I felt their chemistry and enjoyed both their sweeter connection moments and the steamier ones. Their chemistry really worked for me. Both are reluctant to get involved with each other because Vaughn's hoping to go to another team after the season and Natalie doesn't date hockey players, yet they can't stay away from each other. It doesn't help that Natalie's older brother (and team captain of Vaughn's team) has hated Vaughn (and vice versa) for years. Of course their sneaking around comes to light, of course there's a bit of angst, but ultimately they figure out they care more about each other than some of the other things and get their HFN/HEA. I would have loved an extended out epilogue, but this is another of those first in series where you know these characters will be in other books too.

I have one word for you and that is SWOON!! My God I think I found my book-husband. Vaughn has taken my heart and I do not need it back.

The chemistry these two had was sizzling hot and the banter was funny. You could feel all the pent-up desire and want they felt for each other. It was making me crazy to see how much she valided her brothers opinion when all Vaughn has shown her how much see means to him.

As the start to a new series I'm blown away and can't wait to read the next book and see more HEA happening.

one thing I can't get behind in plotlines in romance novels is when the main conflict is sibling disapproval of the relationship, I just don't get it why is that an issue between two adult people
but that's is just me

Recensione in Review Party sulla mia pagina Bookstagram
https://www.instagram.com/p/CWKxT5aMB...

Vaughn and Natalie have a one night stand in Vancouver and 8 months later, Vaughn finds out that Natalie is his rival's younger sister. His rival also happens to be his new team captain.

Dirty Secret was such a fun, flirty, and easy read. It's low on angst and there's only one main conflict. Nothing convoluted. It was the perfect audiobook to listen to while I was working. I didn't have to use a lot of brain power to get through this book.

I really like both Vaughan and Natalie. Vaughn is a grumpy NHL hockey player with a bad reputation. Natalie is an ex-hockey player who's now a coach. I also really like that Vaughn and Natalie are 💯 into each other. Vaughn isn't a player who sleeps around, so there is no other woman drama. The characterization and character motivations are simple and straightforward. There's enough depth that Natalie and Vaughn are not cardboard cutouts.

My only complaint is that I wanted a flashback of their one night stand. We're told that this night was special for both Vaughn and Natalie, but I wasn't 💯 convinced. I get why Natalie was into Vaughn since she's always had a crush on him. But I didn't really get why the night was so special for Vaughn.

Audiobook:
Christian Fox is one of my favourite narrators. His voice makes me 🥵 He does a fantastic job narrating Vaughn's POV.

Savannah Peachwood's performance was...okay. She wasn't the worst narrator, but she also wasn't the best. For instance, she doesn't really adjust her tone of voice to make the characters sound like they're actually yelling. She often sounded whiny and her narration was very slow. I had to adjust the speed everytime we switched narrators because Christian Fox spoke at a normal pace, while Savannah Peachwood spoke at a very slow pace.

Well of course I loved it because it's Mira Lyn Kelly but it's too darn hot for me to write a review now.

But if you like a great forbidden, second chance hockey romance with fantastic characters and scorching hot chemistry, I'd say go for it.

You won't regret it.

This book gave me all the feels! From steamy heat to ripping my heart out to shoving it back in my chest warm and fuzzy - it did it all!
Natalie has had a crush on her brother's biggest hockey rival, Vaughn Vassar, since she was a teenager. When she finally had a chance to act on it one night, she does. But she gave Vaughn a fake name and snuck out leaving a note that she's not into hockey players. He had no idea who she was, least of all Greg Baxter's little sister. When Vaughn is traded to Greg's team and he realizes that "Allie" is actually Natalie Baxter, the clash begins!
This book was so very fun! It had heat and heart and secrecy by the tons! I loved it!!

(Natalie's brother Greg Baxter has his own book! 'Dirty Player' is book 2 in the Back To You series.... & it's my fave of that series!)

Vaughn is a passionate man, “Not sorry,” I growl. And then we’re kissing again, harder, hotter..." Vaughn doesn't need to be told things twice, until he moves, "if that’s what I want? She has to ask? I’m off the chair in a heartbeat and then Natalie’s back on her bed with me following her down. “Baby, I’m going to show you what I want…” I liked this book, I loved Vaughn.

I DNF'd this pretty early. I think in the first 10% of the book. It's possible I might try again later, but it pissed me off at first because it committed super book sins.

Brief of what I know so far - FMC hooked up with the MMC for some sexy sex. While he thought he might have met the one, she snuck out without a word or a note or a phone#. Now it's 8 months later and he sees her and discovers her brother plays on the same hockey team as he does, and they are mortal enemies, which would make their coupling a big problem. She's a little bitch about it and doesn't want to date him because of it.

So - first thing that pissed me off is the fucking author deprives us of their first time. You know how I feel about that. The first time is the most important.

Second - I hate this trope because just fucking stand up to your brother. You're a grown ass adult! Tell him to get the fuck over himself.

Third - this type of book is usually a slow burn and yea - fuck that.

The reason I might try it again later is simple.... Christian Fox narrates and that fucker is hot.

Bought this because I read a review wrong. Turns out the heroine HAS spread her legs and allowed another man to crawl between them, grunting and heaving and sliming all over her, taking her innocence and a claim and connection that can NEVER belong to the hero. So tired of this shit in romance. Returned for a refund.
