I’m a big believer that skin is skin no matter the colour, so how much can skincare differ for a white person verses a person of colour? Hyperpigmentation, that’s the biggest difference. It’s everything to us and not as big an issue for them.

This book has information and advice on almost every skincare issue you can think of, every age, every life stage, every gender, even on the most important and effective products. Not the sort of book you need to read cover to cover, but there are relevant sections for everyone.

Skin Revolution by Dr. Vanita Rattan is a skin care guide for people with skin of colour.

Dr. Vanita begins the book by reminding people to celebrate their melanin rich skin of colour. Her purpose of writing this book is quite legitimate and applaud worthy. We've seen numerous advertisements on our socials, most of them promoting how to get a whiter skin. Why not just accept your beautiful skin tone and take care of it?

A books written by a doctor and a cosmetic formulator specialising in skin of colour, this book is a guide to understand skin and skincare. Straightforward chapters which begin with explaining the basic anatomy and physiology of skin of colour will help you understand the basics. She proceeds with explaining the basic ingredients and the needs of the skin.

Everything is backed up scientific explanations which was a big yes for me in terms of following the book. Multiple skin conditions and skin care for multiple age groups has been spoken about in depth and what to do for the same. Of course, a referral to your concerned doctor is the first thing. Combination skin and it's concern has been focused on as well. Lots of myth-busting along with tips and scientific evidence has been provided.

This book has served to be a guide for me to understand the needs of my skin. I am recommending this title to you! Read it, understand it and take care of your skin! 👩🏽‍⚕️

“Our melanin-rich skin is beautiful and should be treated that way”

Myself being a person of colour, I have struggled with my skin from the time I was a teenager and even now still in my 40’s. With skincare over the years I have realised there isn’t a one size fits all and this book shows me just that.

I have tried so many trends, ran and bought the beauty products I saw on TikTok that’s doing wonders for people only to have non of them actually work for me.

Finally to be able to understand my skin tone and really know what ingredients work best for my skin is a god send. Having two daughters this book will become the holy grail for us and I can see us revisiting this book many times.

With this book I can educate my daughters about their skin and so we can break the cycle of bad skincare that I experienced. When I was growing up I wish I had something like this but we made do with what we thought was the best at the time.

Finally a book that features skin of the global majority - people of color. Topics include: eczema, acne, skincare, what ingredients do what, pregnancy skincare, and baby skin. The skincare glossary was most informative.
