I'm a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.
I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I've retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I'm from Texas. (?) Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son--a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!
I love homemade tacos, nail polish, and romance novels--not necessarily in that order. I'm a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I'm shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.
I believe that God is love. I guess that's why I adore romances.
I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I'm a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that's me June Cleaver with a laptop.
I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I'll get to it or I won't, either way I'm good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I'm alone on this last one, and again, I'm good with it.)
Favorite movies--(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940's movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven't seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn's and Audrey's.
This is a Clean Amish Romance, and this is the first book in the Paradise Valley series. I really loved the characters in this book. Millie was learning to move on after losing her husband and finding out she was pregnant. Millie as decided she would never get married again. The woman Henry loved and was to married leaved him, and he is left to figure out how to move on. The storyline was cute and fun to read. There is a lot of food talk in this book, but I enjoyed the food talk in this book. I felt the food talk was put into this book very well. This ending kept you wanting to keep reading. Great book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Zebra) or author (Amy Lillard) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Two young Amish people are suffering loss when their family members try to push them together. Millie moved to live with her Aunt Sylvie after the death of her husband. Sylvie runs an inn and Millie is helping her. She was tired of the pitying looks that she was getting in her hometown. Since his death, she found out she is pregnant but never wants to marry again and feels that she can raise her baby alone. Henry's fiancée called off their engagement to move to Belize and work as a missionary. Now he is living in Paradise Springs, Missouri, helping his grandfather Vern and hoping to convince him to move to Oklahoma to live with his family but Vern isn't interested. Sylvie and Vern decide the two young people need each other so they work to set them up. This is a sweet, funny story as the two decide to pretend to go along with their family members because they do enjoy their friendship even though they do not plan to ever marry. Between whoopie pie contests, the widow's club, and hormones, this story has humor and romance. A great new series to look forward to. I received a complimentary ARC from Kensington Books, Zebra, and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
I really enjoyed reading and meeting the characters of Amy Lillard's new series, Paradise Valley starting with the first book, Marry Me, Millie. A group of women that are friends call themselves the "Widows Club" these women have all endured the heartache of widowhood and are helping each other back onto their feet with friendship and encouragement when needed. Pregnant young widow, Millie Bauman is a faithful woman running a B&B in the Amish community of Paradise Valley, Missouri. She is excited about her baby arriving soon and get's help running the B&B from her Aunt Sylvie. I loved seeing the ladies of the widows club making their whoopie pies each week, they can get pretty competitive about which flavors are the best. Millie is content with life but then she meets Henry King who is in town just until family business is complete. I enjoyed seeing how Millie and Henry, two souls dealing with heartache, compliment each other as they work through problems and grow together through faith and romance. Recommended!
Pub Date 28 Dec 2021 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Millie Bauman is a recent widow who is also six months pregnant. She has moved to Paradise Valley and is staying with her Aunt Sylvie who runs a bed and breakfast. Sylvie is also working on recipes for the upcoming Whoopie Pie Festival because she wants to continue her winning streak. She is trying multiple flavors in order to find the winning combination. Henry King has come to Paradise Valley to help his grandfather and convince him to move to Oklahoma. He is also trying to get over his heartbreak at losing his fiancé. She decided to go on a mission trip to Belize rather than marry Henry. Both Henry and Millie have decided that marriage is not for them. Sylvie decides that Henry is perfect for Millie. She teams up with Henry’s grandfather, Vern to play matchmaker. They conspire to make sure that Henry and Millie manage to “bump” into each other (often). Marry Me, Millie by Amy Lillard is the first novel in the Paradise Valley series. I thought Marry Me, Millie was well-written with developed characters. Amy Lillard created some delightful characters. I thought they were realistic and relatable. Millie is six months pregnant and still grieving the loss of her husband. She decided a fresh start was needed. Millie did not count on her Aunt Sylvie and the ladies of the Whoopie Pie Widows Club. They are a romantic bunch as well as gossips. I loved the humor in the story. I laughed frequently while reading Marry Me, Millie. I liked the dialogue and the various storylines. Marry Me, Millie has a good ending. I am looking forward to the next novel in the Paradise Valley series. There are recipes at the end for some of Sylvie’s baked goods. Marry Me, Millie is a sweet story about faith, loss, family, hope, friendship, and new love. Marry Me, Millie is an amusing Amish tale with wordy widows, whoopie pie competitiveness, a meddling matchmaker, a determined dawdi, and a gracious God.
Millie Bauman is a young widow who is soon to have a child. While belief that everything that happens is due to God's plan, Millie is still very sad and alone. Then there is Henry King. He is in Paradise Valley temporarily, and is nursing his own loss and is plagued with sadness and anger. In fact, his heart has become hardened.
Millie intends on staying on with her aunt Sylvie at her bed and breakfast after she has her baby, thinking that another love is not in the cards for her. However, if things really do go according to God's plan, she just might get a second chance at love when it comes to Henry.
Millie and Henry might not have a chance to look away with each other, especially when well-meaning matchmakers get involved in these young people's lives. What a wonderfully sweet romance by Amy Lillard and a great start to a new, heartwarming series.
Yall this be my favorite book of Ms. Lillard's! It was just so much fun to read and I love this family! They sort of reminded me of the Brady Bunch!! I love all the feel good feelings this book gave me. It made me giggle at times. My favorite characters were Vern and Sylvie they made me smile and giggle. W all have past hurts but if we ask God for help we can overcome them. I thought Lillard did such a great job with descriptions and making this family so realistic that I felt like I was a part it. I got such enjoyment out of it that I hated to see it end! I hope there's going to be more about this family. This is a book worth rereading again and again. I'll store this on favorite keeper shelf. My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.
I was so excited to read the first book in this new series by Amy Lillard. I just love everything I read from this author and really enjoyed this sweet romance. This story is based in Missouri. Millie is an Amish woman who has just experienced the tragic event of her husband's death. And then she discovers a baby is on the way.
I loved the matchmaker. Sylvie, a member of the Widows Club, who has plans for Millie and Henry, but does Millie want this? There are some sweet humorous lines in the book which I really enjoyed reading. And if you don't know anything about Whoopie Pies, you will soon! Plus there are some recipes at the end and I am going to make some Whoopie Pies of my own! This is an enjoyable start to a new series and I can't wait for the next book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All thoughts are my own.
This was my first ever Amish romance, and although I liked many instances of it, I expected/wanted something more rural.
The book started with name dumps which are never good and I thought it was actually quite unnecessary, as the book deals with just 4-5 characters, the rest could have been easily introduced later when the story needed them.
I liked how traditionally feminine/masculine the main two characters were, and actually it wasn't even the central part of the story, it was just "a thing that is, the characters fill their traditional roles, all right? Now let's move with the story". Their looks weren't constantly described nor was the "chemistry" between them, and that made the romance clean.
I had no idea what a whoopie pie was until I started reading this novel - and the book had over 200 mentions of whoopie pies. This book actually had recipes in the end! I might actually try it sometime, I was so excited when I saw them! That bumped the book by half a star in my mind (so my final rating is 3.5 which is always rounded up to 4 in my system)
I really liked Marry Me, Millie. This was a sweet Amish romance. I loved the widows club and Aunt Sylvie. I wish I could taste some of her Whoopie Pies. This was a good story and I enjoyed Millie's and Henry's connection. I loved how Vern and Sylvie worked together. A great ending and I'm looking forward to reading more of this Authors work.
I give Marry Me, Millie 4 stars for its sweet read. I would recommend this book to Amish Romance Fans.
Marry Me Millie ( Paradise Valley #1 ) By: Amy Lillard Marry Me Millie is the first book in a brand new series Paradise Valley. This is Millie and Henry’s story. Loved the story and the characters both were well written and the characters were real like. Millie lost her husband and she finds out she is with child. What will she do? I really loved the matchmaking in this story. I found myself laughing at times. Do you love whoopie pies, they are a big part in this story .. At the end is an extra treat , you will find recipes. They look and sound so good .. This is a very good start to a new series by Amy Lillard and I can’t wait for the next book. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Sweet story filled with love, matchmaking, family, devotion, and faith. Author Amy Lillard writes stories that warm the heart. I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required.
by Amy Lillard This delightful read is the first book in Amy Lillard’s new “Widows Club” series which is set in fictitious Paradise Valley, Missouri. This reviewer grew up in Missouri a few miles from what is now the largest Old Order Amish Settlement west of the Mississippi River. So, a Missouri setting was especially inviting.
Millie is pregnant which she learned just after her husband died suddenly. She moved after his death and now lives with her Aunt Sylvie who owns a Bed & Breakfast. Aunt Sylvie is a member of the Widows Club having been a widow for a long time. The club’s signature food is a Whoopie Pie. Lots of Whoopie Pies. All flavors. And Aunt Sylvie has won first place for several years presenting a new Whoopie Pie combination each year. By the way, a Whoopie Pie is two pieces of cake with a cream filling between.
Aunt Sylvie tries new recipes one after the other, but Millie’s favorite filling is … vanilla. Millie is determined at the beginning of the story to do two things. The first is to not join the Widows Club and the second is to raise her child alone and never marry again.
But she had not counted on Henry King, a visitor to Paradise Valley, who has been sent by his father to move Vern, Henry’s grandfather, to Oklahoma. Something that was proving to be a challenge. By the way, Vern loves Whoopie Pies–all flavors.
Henry is not only good-looking, but he is also single. The Widows Club ladies are quick to point out both attributes despite Millie is now six months along in her pregnancy. Millie agrees with both points but remember her determination to not marry again? Henry is not searching for a wife having had his own heart severely bruised.
Aunt Sylvie and Vern decide that Millie and Henry definitely are a match and plot how to throw the two of them together. Often.
The author develops the story at a pleasing pace, and it is quite an enjoyable read. The supporting characters and scenes are well done. I highly recommend this book and personally look forward to the second book in the series.
One aspect of the story did bother me. Millie is described more than once as “very pregnant” at six months in such a way, I expected twins. At six-months of pregnancy, one is definitely and noticeably pregnant but very pregnant???
A wonderful addition at the end are recipes! Baked Beignets, Vanilla Whoopie Pies and decadent-sounding Brownie Whoopie Pies with Salted Caramel Buttercream Filling. Which one would you want to make? I think I gained weight just reading the recipes.
A thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Kensington Books, for the opportunity to read and review an ARC (advanced reader’s copy) of this book. The opinions expressed in my review are my own.
Rating: 5 stars. Cover: Very attractive but since Millie is pregnant throughout much of this story, maybe the Amish woman in the chair should be noticeably pregnant and working on a baby blanket or quilt. Expected publish date: 28 Dec 2021
I seem to always love books written in and about Amish folks. Clean and enjoyable storyline with a cast of lively and delightful characters round out the enjoyment of this novel. A fun read which will leave you with a smile. Highly recommended!
Marry Me, Millie, a fun and inspirational Amish romance, is the first book in Amy Lillard's Paradise Valley series. In it the reader is introduced to the community of Paradise Valley, Missouri. One of its members is Millie Bauman. She recently had to deal with two major life changing events back to back: the unexpected death of her husband and finding out that she was with child. As a result, Millie makes plans to never remarry and thus raise her child alone.
Henry King, a recent newcomer to Paradise Valley, is dealing with his own major life changing event: a recent painful, broken engagement that he is still recovering from. As a result, he also has no plans to marry. Ah, but as the proverb says, we make plans, but God has the final word.
There are so many things I loved about this book. One was getting to know the characters. The author's descriptions of the characters, as well as the characters' conversations and interactions with each other, helped me feel completely connected to them. Those elements also helped me better understand and appreciate what they were feeling and going through. Many of their interactions had me reflecting, others had me laughing out loud, and still others had me feeling like my heart was breaking into pieces. The deep connection I felt with the characters, along with the romance, inspiration and laughs, are what made this wonderful story so special, and also what have me looking forward to upcoming books in this series. I highly recommend you read it for yourself, because it's just that good.
***I received a copy of this book from Kensington Books through NetGalley. All comments and opinions are strictly my own.
All was fair when it came to love and whoopie pies. And this was both.
Where I live in Missouri, we have several big Amish communities so I loved that this was set in Missouri. A connection if you will. Love and whoopie pies are at the center of this romance. Millie Bauman has recently lost her husband and she is now living with her Aunt Sylvie who runs a B&B and makes the best whoopie pies in the state. She loves her niece and is worried that Millie will do life alone. Millie is expecting and has accepted the will of God in her life. She is determined not to marry and raise her child alone while helping her single aunt run the B&B. Aunt Sylvie has a different ideal when Henry King is sent to help his grandfather. A long time member of the Amish Community in Paradise Valley.
Aunt Sylvie becomes a match maker with the help of Henry's grandfather. Bringing the two together has its obstacles and its blessings. The whoopie pies connect the two who have had heart ache and bring an unexpected romance to Paradise. With all Amish romances there is always a spiritual lesson to learn and this was identity. We can build our identity in good things and in doing so, it can turn ugly quick. Each of the main characters had done that to a degree in different ways and discovered that the best identity is faith in Christ. It is something that we can lose sight of easily enough but in losing it, it brings us back closer to God's presence. In his presence, we have a true blessing of family, love and community.
A special thank you to Kensington Books and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Marry Me, Millie is a wonderful start to a new series! I really liked Millie and Henry, as well as Sylvie and Vern, who were side characters but were definitely involved in getting these two together.
Henry and Millie were both grieving in their own ways. Henry had been dumped a couple of months before he was to be married and Millie was a young, pregnant widow. They both had given up on the idea of finding love again. Yet, these two really hit it off right away and it was clear that they were developing feelings for each other.
Millie had a lot of emotional ups and downs in the book, yet it made a lot of sense as she was dealing with quite a bit. Henry was a character that I couldn’t help but like right away. He was definitely a good and patient man.
The author has introduced another charming Amish community with this book. I’m looking forward to reading more stories in this setting.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
What an adorable story! When two silver haired matchmakers try their hand at pairing up their young relatives who both intend on remaining single, well, what could possibly go wrong? And when you toss in the the whoopie pie competition of the decade and a well-meaning busybody or two the fun has only started in Paradise Valley...
A bit on the lighter side Marry Me, Millie was an enjoyable read and kept me quite entertained from start to finish. Sylvie and Vern's machinations to get to get Millie and Henry together had me chuckling and maybe, just possibly mind you, even rolling my eyes once or twice. The tone that Amy Lillard set with this story was almost a romantic comedy and the Amish setting made it even more fun. There were still a few serious and/or thoughtful moments in the tale that were well placed, making the reader more sympathetic to the characters and invested in their fictional lives.
Marry Me, Millie is the first book in Amy Lillard's brand new Paradise Valley series. The series is off to a great start and I enjoyed my time in this new fictional Amish community. Now, I just wish the next book would hurry up and come out...
(I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.)
Amy Lillard begins another wonderful series set in Missouri. Millie Bauman looses her husband then finds herself pregnant. Wanting a new start, she moves to Missouri to help her Aunt with her B&B while mending her life. Two things she decides in the beginning are: She won't join the local Widow's club nor will she ever remarry. Well one can guess how that turns out. Meanwhile, Henry Kings moves to town to help his Grandfather then move him home with family in the fall. However, he is also recovering from his own heartache. When the community busybodies decide that Millie and Henry would make a wonderful couple, hold on while they play matchmaker. Will Millie and Henry be able to resist their efforts? Or will the draw towards one another be stronger?
The characters in this book are so fun. They are loving and supportive but just a little bit meddlesome. Aunt Sylvie and her "Whoopie pie" Widow club bring us some wonderful smelling aromas as they try to find the winning recipe. Yes, the reader can almost smell the different flavors coming from the oven. Millie and Henry must learn to love again. Life does go on. I look forward to the rest of the series. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.
I was given an ARC by Kensington Books through Netgalley of Marry Me, Millie by Amy Lillard. All options are mine, and I was not required to give a positive review.
Millie Batman suddenly becomes a widow due to an accident. She moves to Paradise Valley to help her Aunt Sylvia run a B &B and wait the birth of her child.
Aunt Sylvia is Whoopie queen and member of the Whoopie Widows Club in Paradise Valley.
Henry King Comes to Paradise Valley to help his grandfather, Vern, prepare to move from Paradise Valley so Vern’s family can better care for him.
Millie and Henry’s paths cross and Sylvia and Vern plot to keep them together.
This is a delightful story that is worth a read. 5-stars all the way.
Publication Date 28 Dec 2021. Just in time for reading after the busy holiday season.
Yay! A new series by Amy Lillard!! Millie, finds herself alone & pregnant, following the tragic death of her young husband. Wanting to be independent, Millie decides to move to Paradise Valley & help her aunt run a bed & breakfast.
Accepting her life now as God's will, Millie intends to remain single & raise her child alone. Much to Millies chagrin, Aunt Sylvie decides to play matchmaker & get her married off to the new, single man in town.
In this story Ms. Lillard writes compassionately of loss, hope, renewed faith, trust in God & new love. It even contains a surprising new love story.
A great read, I look forward to the rest of the series. You can never go wrong with an Amy Lillard book.
This is the first book in a brand new series Paradise Valley by Amy Lillard. I really enjoyed reading this story. It is a sweet Amish romance and I was hooked from the beginning. I loved all of the characters in this story. I couldn't put it down I kept reading faster to see what was going to happen next. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I received a complimentary copy from the author and these opinions are my own.
I was honored to be able to read an ARC of Marry Me, Millie by Amy Lillard, in her new Paradise Valley Series set in Missouri.
Millie is in Paradise Valley to assist her aunt with her Bed and Breakfast after losing her husband. Lillard weaved an original and unique plot with this tale by having the Widow’s Club in the community making Whoopie Pies and a festival held each year. Henry King is a newcomer to convince his grandfather he needs to move to Wells Landing, OK. The ups and downs of how Millie and Henry story evolved brought laughter, smiles and tears at times. These characters were well developed with their traits and personalities along with rest of the cast. I cannot wait till book two is released to see how the community of Paradise Valley is doing along with these new characters who have become like family from reading their tale. A bonus was some delicious recipes at the end of the book.
Thank you to the author and Kensington Publishing Corp. for an ARC copy of this book without any obligation to write a positive review. I have shared my own opinion.
It happened that I've read "The Amish Matchmaker" first but I don't think that is a problem. Nothing was spoiled. However, I did compare the books a bit and I liked the characters in "The Amish Matchmaker" more. But "Marry Me, Millie" was also good and have had that nice vibe I liked. I'd give 4,5 stars to this one.
Marry Me Millie is the first book in The Paradise Valley series. Millie Bauman recently became a widow with a child on the way and helps runs a bed and breakfast with her aunt in Paradise Valley. Henry King also moved to Paradise Valley to recover from a lost love. The two agree to pretend to care for each others to appease their matchmakers...but pretend becomes real. I love the introduction of the Whoopie Pies Widow Club and all their members.. It is a very sweet read and love the caring that is evident with the widow's club.. I love the description of the food and the camaraderie between the widow's. I especially love the recipes at the end of the book. I was given an advanced reader copy and was no way obligated to write a review.
Marry Me, Mill is such a wonderful book that kept me turning the pages. The characters felt so real that I felt like I knew what was in each characters heart and mind.
I thought of lot of Henry who came to realize who he wanted in his life. He did his best to try to break through Millie's insecurities, even though he had many of his own.
Two more lovable characters were Grandpa, Vern and Millies Aunt, Slyvie. Both of them were not quite done with this life, contrary to what others might think. They were hard working and cared for others. They could have a book all their own!
There is a bonus at the back of the book...recipes are included! Now, that's always a favorite of mine.
What a great enjoyable read!
This book was given to me by the publisher. All of my opinions are my own.
Recently widowed and finding herself pregnant, Millie moves to her aunt Sylvia’s bed and breakfast to help her out and decides never to marry again. Henry was about to get married when his girlfriend suddenly leaves him. Due to the painful breakup, Henry vows to never get married. Little does Millie and Henry realize what a matchmaker Sylvie is. Will her aunt’s skills as a matchmaker bring the two together and help them overcome their past and put their faith and trust in God to help lead them in the direction they need to go? I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book In the series.
I was given a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest opinion and review.
Millie plans on living her life helping her Aunt run a B&B and raising her child alone. But her Aunt, The Whoopie Pie Widow's Club and Vern King think differently.
Millie and Henry try to play along, but when they really start to care about each other Millie finds herself confronted with devastating news. She has to decide to trust God and His plans or to bolt.
Filled with lots of laughs, whoopie pies, and a surprise romance, Mary Me, Millie is an entertaining read and hard to put down.
Marry me Millie by Amy Lillard is Book 1 in the Paradise Valley Series Reading this book is like sitting on a your favorite childhood teeter totter going up and down having the time of your life! Your will thoroughly enjoy this story and all the characters. Can someone recover from a tragic loss and then find love again? Can you realize one phase of your life has passed and you are moving into another? How do you handle change? Millie Batman & Henry King, both have come through loss and they are trying to see their way through, but can they, or is the past to much of a weight to pulled them down then to lift them up so they can move forward together. Aunt Sylvia, and Vern ( Henry’s uncle) are both wonderful characters in their own right both are supportive, caring and loving. But they are also moving through stages in life that God has planned for them. This book is a wonderful example that we don’t need to be perfect, we just need to be open to the changes in life and know that with the love of the ones we love and the faith we have we will be fine and God will carry us through. Amy Lillard is a wonderful authors and I really look forward to the rest of this series. I was given a ARC copy for my honest opinion, I highly recommend this book.
