Ellie Atwood is a quiet nineteen year old living a quiet, somewhat lonely life in the small town of WillowWood. When she lends her help in cleaning the house at the end of the block, that changes. Someone died in the house two months ago, an unsolved murder that left the town shaken. Ellie is left startled by strange feelings and occurrences that happen inside the house, and even more so by the woman who has started following her around town. When the woman introduces herself as Arielle, the one who was murdered two months ago, Ellie soon realizes that Arielle has somehow become attached to her. With Arielle unable to remember the events of the night she was murdered, she and Ellie are lost on what to do. With the help of her new overly cheery ghost companion, and the new girl in town, Amy, Ellie does the only thing she can think of to help Arielle move on: solve the mystery of her murder.
Side note: Have you seen this STUNNING COVER?! It's beautiful and the cover this story deserves! (I just find it funny how Ellie isn't on their, lol. If I'm not mistaken, those tow should be Amy & Arielle, right?)
Well, I'm not really surprised about my 5 Star Rating to be honest. In fact, I would have been shocked if this book ended up being anything but a 5 star. Why? Because this is the books second - improofed - edition and I LOVED it the very first time I read it and I still LOVE it now.
It has absolutly stunning characters, a good plot, a perfect lenght and a bitter-sweet ending. (And ... maybe the build up for a sequel?????? Author????? I'm hyped!) Oh and also, the book itself is also really greatly written. Just saying.
The thing I loved the most about this book, were it's characters and the relationships those characters had. There is one side-romance, if you want to call it that and I found it interesting to see that that aspect was a little - I don't wanna say cut, but - reduced in the new version. I looked it up because I could have sworn the old version was more aggressivly romantic. Which it was. When I first saw the word "roommate" I was a little panicked because I couldn't remember if that was how we introduced the character in the first version as well. And I would have been sad if we had undone the romance. But thank goodness, they were still very gäy and very in love.
Makes one wonder: Was this a reference to the "And they were roommates. Oh god, they were roommates" thing? Please say yes, because that's were my mind went. xD
That being said, I kinda wish we had gotten at least one more scene with Arielle & Kelly post reveal. I don't know what I would have wanted but meeeeh, a cheesy last minute "I will never forget you. - Me, too." or something would have been nice. That's however all you'll get romance vise. The rest of the relationships are platonic bonds and family bonds that outshine the romance one a lot. Here's also where a lot of the new scenes shine, because most of them are there to inrich the platonic love those character share.
Every character in here feels important, like, if I were to cut them out of the book, it wouldn't be the same.
I read this twice now, having knowledge about the reveal I haven't had during my first read and honestly, knowing what the twist is, doesn't take away the enjoment I felt in any way. For a lot of reasons, like, the fact that the characters are just that amazing and you want to continue following them or the fact that, the twist wasn't pulled out of nowhere. This wasn't supposed to shock or trick you. And most importantly, the book didn't sacrifice anyone elses development or any story beats just so the twist could work.
"This sentence sounds as if you're comparing it to a twist you've read, Martina." Well, yes Karen, thank you for noticing. I've got two books in mind that did a twist that didn't work. It's very frustrating to know that a book COULD have been good if only the author had not tried to shock the reader. Which is why, I'm so glad this book excistes as it does everything right.
Other stuff I liked:
+ Amethysts ♥ (I know they are a hint at the whichyness, but they are also a hint at aceness. It's an ace thing and I loved that it was included.) + More which stones ♥ + Ace Rep + How it handels grief + This being a platonic love letter + The reveal
let's talk about the potential sequel because i'm not ready to say goodbye to the gang yet and i actually really need to find out what shenanigans amy and ellie and this newcomer get into pls i beg
A Day For Ghosts follows the story of Ellie, a teenager living in the small village of WillowWood with her sister, Alexia, after the deaths of both of their parents. After Ellie helps clean out the house of the Gutermuth family, who moved away after their daughter, Arielle, was murdered, she gets stuck with Arielle's ghost. For reasons that neither of the two can explain, Arielle is spiritually bound to Ellie, and cannot leave her side. Now it's up to Ellie to help Arielle find out who murdered her, and help her move on.
Despite the dark subject matter, I found this to be, above all, a very cosy and comforting read. I enjoyed seeing Ellie bond with Arielle, and I liked seeing her come out of her shell and make friends with Amy, a girl who just moved into town, and Kelly, Arielle's living girlfriend. In spite of the horror surrounding Arielle's death, it warmed my heart to see Arielle finding comfort in her afterlife, and making friends with the people trying to help her. Found family is a strong theme in this book, and it's executed in an organic and endearing way.
There's only one bad thing I have to say about this book, and that is that the fallout of finding out who Arielle's killer was wasn't handled very well in my opinion. I won't say who it is to avoid spoiling anything, but it was very much swept under the rug, and we didn't get to see much of the consequences that the killer would face, or how it affected Ellie and her friends physically and socially, as well as emotionally. I would have liked to see that expanded upon, but regardless, it didn't take much away from my enjoyment of this book.
