Charlene Romero is a witch who works with the ASPCA (A Society for the Prosecution of Cryptids and Assorteds). She’s just back from an emotionally draining assignment when her daughter, Mia, asks for her help in getting her trans boyfriend out of a conversion therapy camp.
They can’t legally just walk up to the gate and demand that they release him and so we’re back with our not so perfect ASPCA heroes and heroines as they plot on how to get the trans children out of the conversion therapy camp.
The camp is run by a witch, and it turns out this is a white witch who totally believes she is doing the Lord’s work. And she is one very powerful witch.
The camp is miles from any town, and it’s surrounded by a high fence topped with barbed wire. The “camp director” says it’s for the safety of the children, as there are bears and other predators living and hunting in the forest that surrounds the camp. Turns out the predators are INSIDE the compound.
“Cryptids and Cauldrons: The Witch (book 2)” by Stephanie Rabig is pretty good but didn’t hold my attention as much as the first one, “Cryptids and Cauldrons: The Sisters”, did. This is supposed to be horror/thriller stuff, and on some level, it probably is, but I think I’ve read too many stories like this to get “scared”. Still, I liked the characters, and the pacing moves the story along nicely.
