I always say when opening a book by Jane you never quite know what you are going to get.
This is the follow up book to Comatose, but it has been a long while since I've read that, and I think it was better that way.
The premise is relatively simple, three girls went missing 50 years ago and Karen investigates them, with her new boyfriend John in tow.
However the investigation is anything but simple with Mr Binks "helping" and Tales of old magnetic routes and mystery powers linked too them.
This is my favourite of Jane's books by a mile. I was totally hooked, so much so that I wanted to stay up to finish it in one sitting.
Karen has chilled and her rough edges smoothed, I love her, I think she's great. Still brusque at times but she shows a soft side a lot in this.
John was good fun and is very loyal to stick with Karen despite her being a huge pain to him!
Mr Binks (great name, great real name which you don't find out til much later) starts off as a great, helpful little old man, but you wonder if he's something much more sinister.
The story travels from Lincoln to York and onto Edinburgh, the dialect is great for each so you know where you are and the description of each location.
There is a slight supernatural element to this book and I know that puts some people off, but I would strongly argue on this occasion it adds to it.
Can't wait to read more by this wonderful and underappreciated author.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Three Little Girls' by Jane Badrock.

Read and reviewed for Jane Badrock and Question Mark Press.

Publication date 30th November 2021.

This is the third book I have read by this author. It is also the second book in the 'Karen Thorpe' series. I have also read the first book in this series 'Comatose' and thr third book in this series 'The Woman Who Knew Faces' and would highly recommend both. These books can be read as standalones and I read them out if order but to gain the insight of character development I would recommend reading then in order.

I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. I am also a huge fan of Jane and if this book is half as good as 'The Woman Who Knew Faces' and 'Comatose' it will be an epic page turner. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Question Mark Press. I have yet to read a book published by Question Mark Press that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 82 chapters. The chapters are short in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Hertfordshire, York and Lincoln, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, and Edinburgh, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, UK 🇬🇧 . The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I have actually visited and holidayed in England on many occasions so am intrigued to see if I recognise anywhere I have visited or stayed at.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are DS Karen Thorpe, John Steele and Mr Binks. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

'Three Little Girls' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Jane discusses/includes the death of children.

Jane has done it again!!! Love, love LOVED this book. Wow!!! What an absolutely unique storyline that I just could not put down!!! Clear your schedules before you pick this up!!

The descriptions are extremely vivid which completely set the scene for me and really made me feel like I was in the storyline. The cover, title and synopsis suit the plot perfectly.

After I read and absolutely loved the first and third books in this series 'Comotose' and 'The Woman Who Knew Faces' I just had to read the second book and also any more that come after 'The Woman Who Knew Faces'. Although all three books can be read as standalones I would advise you read them in order so you can see the character development.

The storyline is most definitely unique and one I have never read before which was a HUGE bonus as there is so many times you can read very similar crime books before you get fed up. There was plenty going on to keep the reader on their toes!!  The storyline is very fast paced and will keep you flipping the pages until you've finished. It is filled with tension, horror, secrets, deceipts suspense and a few absolute shockers which I did not suspect at all!!! It is getting harder and harder to surprise me with the amount of books I have read but you definitely managed it so well done Jane. There were several mysteries that Karen was trying to solve so plenty to keep the reader guessing and I didn't work any of them out which is always a good thing. I absolutely loved the gothic and supernatural feelings throughout the book which was perfectly entwined with the crime and psychological aspects. I love a good horror and to have it mixed in with an unputdownable psychological crime thriller is just my perfect genre. There was just the right amount of the supernatural element to make it believable and not over the top. It gave me shivers down my spine and was hair raising. I was kept on the edge of my seat, and then later my bed, while reading this and I just could not put it down until I had finished at 2am!!! I think this would make an absolutely fantastic movie and I'm looking forward to reading Jane's future books!!

An absolutely unputdownable page turner that will suck you in from the first until the last pages!!

I loved meeting Karen again and she has definitely become one of those protagonists I just cannot wait to meet again. There is definitely a huge difference in her personality throughout the three books and I'm looking forward to see how she is developing still in the next book in this addictive series. Karen is the main protagonist and being another strong female she definitely gets my vote. I love seeing more and more strong females coming into crime novels and Karen is definitely in the lead with some of the best. I absolutely adore her kick butt attitude and felt she was a fantastic role model and lead for her team. Although she is extremely good at her job she still seems to underestimate herself. It was intriguing seeing her and Macy's relationship. It definitely developed from 'Comotose' and how they butted heads a few times to this book. Karen butts heads with quite a few people through the 3 books and I love her attitude!! I have been behind her throughout and the rest of her team. I love Karen's sense of humour and sarcasm and it was interesting to see how her relationship with John changes through the books. John is just as sarcastic, fun, loving and has a heart of gold. It is always intriguing when you know characters from later books in the series and then go back and see how it all starts and changes.  DCI Winter made a fantastic boss and you can see that his team respect him as he is the perfect mix of friend and boss, he made me laugh a few times where he is giving Karen a bollocking with hidden meanings as he knows he can't encourage her to do certain things officially it knows that she will get his messages. This just shows how much of a great relationship they have. Macy is an essential part of the team. I enjoyed getting to know her even more in this book and look forward to meeting her again. I recognised a certain character immediately fro. 'The Woman Who Knew Faces' and although he isn't mentioned as much in this book, knowing what happens with him in the third book definitely changes how I feel about him. John's mother is very stuck up but I like his Dad, they seem to have such different personalities and attitudes that is makes me wonder how they get together!! Overall an absolutely fantastic team who were each strong individuals with very different personalities but they all worked perfectly together. I'm going to miss them all and can't wait to meet them all again!!!

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO JANE ON YET ANOTHER ABSOLUTELY PAGE TURNING AND EXPLOSIVE BOOK IN AN ADDICTIVE UNPUTDOWNABLE SERIES!! THIS IS WHY YOU ARE IN MY FAVOURITE AUTHOR LIST!!!

I cannot wait to dig into future books in this series and get to know Karen and her team in the future. Here's to your next success 🥂

Overall an absolutely EXPLOSIVE page turning book filled with surprises and twists in an extremely successful series!!

Genres covered in this book include Thriller, Horror, Supernatural, Psychological Thriller, Police Procedural, Suspense, Crime Fiction, Occult Horror, Horror Thriller and Psychological Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Angela Marsons, Carol Wyer, Noelle Holten, Mark Edwards and anyone looking for an explosive crime series!!!

314 pages.

This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free on kindle unlimited and £8.99 in paperback (at time of purchase) via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

I read and enjoyed the first book in the series featuring Detective Inspector Karen Thorpe. So when I heard that Jane had released the second book of the series, I knew that I had to read it as soon as I could. I finally managed to get hold of a copy and I dived straight in. Overall I did enjoy reading ‘Three Little Girls’ but more about that in a bit.
I can’t say that I especially warmed to the character of Karen Thorpe in this story. Her attitude and manner were quite abrasive at times and she got on my nerves to the point where I wanted to slap her across the face with a wet fish. Saying that though, I can understand why she reacts the way she does when ‘files’ mysteriously appear on her desk that she can’t remember asking for. I think I would be a bit upset too. Although I didn’t warm to her character, I did find her intriguing and interesting.
It didn’t take me long to get into ‘Three Little Girls’. In fact by the time I got to the end of the first page, I knew that I was going to be in for a treat and then some. From fairly early on, I knew that I would become addicted to reading ‘Three Little Girls’ and so it proved to be. I was intrigued by the story and by the cold cases and I had to keep reading to see if my suspicions as to what was going to happen happened or if I had the wrong end of the stick entirely. The more of the book that I read, the more that I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. I became so wrapped up in the story that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the book. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘Three Little Girls’ and I had to say goodbye to Karen Thorpe. I found ‘Three Little Girls’ to be a gripping, tense and dramatic read, which certainly kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat throughout.
‘Three Little Girls’ is well written. Jane has one of those writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. Jane drew me into the story from the very start and then took me on one heck of a journey. For me the story hit the ground running and maintained a fairly fast pace throughout. Reading ‘Three Little Girls’ felt like being on an at times scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I love the way in which Jane makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story themselves and at the heart of the action.
In short, I did enjoy reading ‘Three Little Girls’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Jane’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

This book is the 2nd in the Karen Thorpe series, and is just as enjoyable as the first, although this one has a darker, supernatural side to it as well which gave it a bit of a twist.
Great storyline, and a little different to the normal 'police' books I read - would definitely recommend.

Jane Badrock is back! The second book to feature DI Karen Thorpe. I was lucky enough to read and review the first book which almost led me to starving the youngest child. THIS one, well the child was lucky...I read it overnight, so no starvation needed. I find Jane Badrocks books so readable and entertaining that I was so happy when I got a copy of this book.
Not your run of the mill detective or police thriller. This time Karen Thorpe starts to experience weird happenings, emails she can't remember sending, case files being brought to her out of the blue. All connected to three missing little girls from 1964. From different places but none of them ever discovered, no one ever charged.
Karen's father, many years later, attempted to investigate but died before he could make any progress. These are the files that appear like magic, and these are the cases Karen and her sometimes boyfriend John Steele, who is the polar opposite to Karen, being tidy and organised to her chaotic self, decide to go on a trek to Lincoln, York and Edinburgh to see if they can succeed in discovering new information about these three girls.
As well as themselves we are introduced to Mr Binks, an old man who is a quirky book store owner, a mapmaker and oh, so much more! He is a character who I could picture immediately. I even have an actor for his part, too. Mr Binks brings magic, old-world type magic, keys, and doors, but can he be trusted, well, read the book...you may find out.
A very unique angle to take for a police/crime thriller and one that I hugely enjoyed. I am a reader who loves the supernatural side, and Jane Badrock wrote it perfectly.
I always love Karen Thorpe, she makes me chuckle too. Jane's characters are always strong, and relatable. I can always picture her characters due to the fantastic way she writes them. I mean...Mr Binks, he made me proper giggle, the visions of the man I pictured did not help at all. Anyway, I digress. It is a book I am hoping Jane Badrock decides she needs to write a sequel too anyway. I would love to see some of the vibrant characters, Mr Binks spent time within the book, again.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone who loves a crime thriller that's a bit off the track. It is an engrossing, suspenseful, and, at times, ghostly read.

This is the 2nd book in the Karen Thorpe series, and I have read the first book. I can say that they do work well as stand-alone. As I had read the previous book I immediately wanted to read this one, I didn't read the synopsis so it was a very pleasant surprise to see the story that the author had in mind for our detective.

As I started reading this I remembered the main protagonist, Karen Thorpe, not particularly likeable. She is abrupt, short with people and very, very work-focused. She is a character that thrives o her work, it is all she thinks about and in her job she has no time for fools. It's a good job that her on/off/maybe-boyfriend John understands her and the work, and his role plays out so well in this story.

When case files randomly start turning up on her desk, Karen is sure someone is taking the mick out of her. Then she starts to see something in them, something that reminds her of her Dad. The more she tries to work out the more bizarre things become, even the level headed John is puzzled. The three cases are from 50 years ago, unsolved and opened by various people over the years but never resolved. Karen and John team up to try and sort through the mysteries and the clues that will lead them to several cities.

This is the second time I have read a book by this author, so I am not familiar with her style yet. Given how much I enjoyed the first book in the series I was a little bewildered at how this story was going. There are definitely more sides to this author and I believe she may like to enjoy swapping genres and mixing things up. It was only when I finished the book that I actually read the synopsis, yeah I know it's the wrong way around, but it has made this book a really interesting and unexpected read.

I am aware of this being a bit of a vague review, and now I have read the synopsis I do see that there is a mention of what this story was going to be. I am in fact rather glad that I came to this one blind, it made for really interesting police procedural with a strong mysterious and magical vibe to it. For me, it worked well and I did enjoy the journey.

One for those who like a crime and mystery read that is a little different but also very addictive reading. It is one I would happily recommend.

Three Little Girls is a clever mix of mystery, supernatural and thriller, which probably shouldn't work but does. DS Karen Thorpe is tough, driven, more than a little unorthodox but there's something about her that makes her appealing.

The story sees Karen faced with three 'cold cases' that appear on her desk, even though she hasn't requested them. The cases relate to the disappearances of the three girls during the same year, but in very different locations. Is there a link? Who requested the files? And will Karen be able to solve them?

The book sees Karen, along with boyfriend, John (CSI), the mysterious Mr Binks and DC Macy Dodds investigating the disappearances, initially off books but eventually with the blessing of her DCI. When Karen discovers that her dad had been investigating one of the cases before he died it makes her all the more determined to bring closure for the families.

I thought this was a great read ~ learning more about Karen and John's relationship (thought the times they spent with John's parents were hilarious), the enigmatic Mr Binks, who definitely had his own agenda and the solving of the decades old disappearances of the girls. It could easily be read as a standalone, but I'm glad that I'd already read Comatose, otherwise I might not have been so engaged with Karen and her team.

I received this book as an ARC from the author and am submitting my honest review

It seems such a long time ago that I read Comatose, the first DS Karen Thorpe book, that I was almost approaching this one cold. It can easily be read as a standalone.

This book is very different to the first; Karen is still work-focused & her on/off boyfriend, John, is around but the story itself has many facets. Part police procedural, part mystery & part supernatural; it is a mixed, but very accomplished, bag.
Karen is ordered to take some annual leave but just before she goes, three cold case files arrive, separately, on her desk. She didn’t request them but, intrigued, she reads them & discovers her late father was interested in them too.
She & John decide to investigate whilst on holiday & along the way meet some standout characters, particularly the mysterious Mr Binks.
Well-written with great characters & very easy to read. Unusual & creepy in parts but the cold case investigation is to the fore.
My favourite book by this author so far. Highly recommended.

I do love reading books by Jane Badrock, you never quite know what you are going to get. A versatile and creative writer with a flare for grabbing the readers attention from the very first page. Right from the start I was with Karen Thorpe by trying to put a logical explanation on recent events but as the story progressed it was obvious that things are never quite what they seem. Engaging characters and a clever and intriguing plot with more than a hint of supernatural coming into play. Not my normal 'go to' story when it comes to anything mystic (hence it didn't quite make the 5*for me personally) but undoubtably a well thoughtout story, brilliantly written and delivered in true Jane Badrock style. Readers that like their books a little on the creepy side, full of mystery and maybe a little dark magic will love this book.

Having read and really enjoyed the first book in the DS Karen Thorpe Series I was looking forward to book two and it was another fabulous read. Quite different from the first in that it wasn’t just a police procedural but a police procedural with a dark mystical element to it. Karen is as focussed on her work as ever, at the expenses of relationships both inside and outside of work.

Briefly, when cold case files start to appear mysteriously along with unexplained emails and other incidents Karen is convinced someone is playing practical tricks on her. She is not amused. When she is told by her boss that she must take holiday time she decides to look into the cases of the three missing girls. With her on/off boyfriend, forensic scientist John, she sets off. But there is something or someone following their every move. Can they help three families finally lay their children to rest?

I’m not really one for the mystical in books but in this case it worked. I loved the character Mr Binks, the map collector, and could visualise him clearly. It was an addictive read and I can see Karen going from strength to strength, alongside Macy and John I hope. A great story and certainly original, dark and creepy in parts but still a classic cold case police procedural. For me 4.5 ⭐️

Thank you Jane Badrock for the advance copy in exchange for a honest review. This is the second DS Karen Thorpe book. Karen receives files from cold cases her father had worked on about missing girls. Her boss tells her she needs to take a holiday so she decides to investigate these cases with her on/off boyfriend John. The investigation takes them to Scotland and introduces mysterious Mr Binks. Will Karen be able to solve the cases her father couldn't? A great ghostly thriller that will keep you hooked.

This is DS Karen Thorpe’s second outing after Comatose, and author Jane Badrock deftly cruises past that dreaded second book syndrome with impressive ease and aplomb.

Three Little Girls is a snowballing crime story that presents a superbly plotted swathe of tangled threads. The story vibrates with tension plus a hint of magic and has a vertiginous ending set against a Scottish backdrop. Can’t wait for the third instalment.

This book grabbed me from the first page & didn’t let go till the last! It's a mystery book with a little bit of supernatural thrown in! I rather enjoyed the hints of dark magic! For me it just added to the dark & creepy feel of the story! I enjoyed following along as Karen tried to figure everything out! I have had the chance to read the first book in the series but really neither one of these books can stand on their own! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next installment!

This is the second book starring DI Karen Thorpe and is just as good as its predecessor, if not better. Karen is odd as anything yet so appealing as a character. Jane Badrock has such an endearing and cosy writing style and I loved the unexpected supernatural twists. Highly recommend!

Not your average crime novel!
Crime, witchcraft, romance & a strange little man called Mr Binks …what’s not to love?!
Jane Badrock’s ‘Three Little Girls’ drew me in from the start, the lead protagonist Karen isn’t always the easiest person to like but her story is one you want to get to the bottom of. Full of twists & turns, some brilliantly written characters & a who done it like I’ve never read before. If crime or quirky novels are your thing then this book is for you.

What a crazy roller coaster of a ride. I just loved this book. Fantastic cast of characters – DI Karen Thorpe, tough, clever, untidy, her on-off boyfriend John Steele, head of forensics, Karen’s opposite, tidy and organised. But I especially loved ‘wee’ book shop owner and map-keeper Mr Binks. Who is he and what does he really do? Can we trust him?

Suspending disbelief doesn’t even come close to cutting it. Witches pathways, gatekeepers (are you the gatekeeper? homage to Ghostbusters?), visions, nightmares, ghosts, hallucinogens, a powerful spell book and even raising the dead – it’s all here, but what is real and what is not? Who knows. Who cares. I just couldn’t stop reading. This is the kind of stuff I love. I hope it ends up on TV.

In 1964 three little girls went missing. Three girls, three locations, many miles apart, but are they connected? No-one was charged, no-one was prosecuted, their bodies never found.

Many years later, Karen’s father re-opened one of the cases, but he died before any progress could be made. Now these files plus two more have mysteriously appeared on Karen’s desk and she feels compelled to investigate. So she and John set off round the country to Lincoln, York and Edinburgh to see what new evidence they can discover. But strange things happen which are linked to old-world magic – the type of thing that Karen is far too sensible and down-to-earth to believe in. Big mistake and one that could put her in serious danger.

I’m a huge fan of crime fiction and police procedurals, but they can often be a bit samey and formulaic. Trust me, this is like nothing I’ve read before and I couldn’t get enough of it. Brilliant!

Many thanks to @zooloo2008 for inviting me to be part of this blog tour.

Three Little Girls is the second outing in the Karen Thorpe detective series. If you read the superb first installment, Comatose, you will live this book. Although to be fair, both books would work equally well as standalone novels.

A brilliantly plotted thriller, keeps you engaged through all the twists and turns until the end

Thank you Jane Badrock for an ARC. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to another installment.

It's a 5* from me!

Detective Karen Thorpe. Back on the detective novels and this one didn’t disappoint has been an amazing refreshing break from the Christmas themes. This is book two in the series by the way. I’ve never read about a detective which as much determination, grit and a must do attitude. The entwined relationships had me second guessing every part that creeped up in this. I was so bewildered by the cases that kept arising.

Even though this book can be read as a stand-alone I can’t wait to go back and read Jane’s first in this series. For a thriller this book had everything you crave from suspense, mystery, twists and a badass detective. I loved how the writing flowed making this easy to read. The only downfall for me was I didn’t quite like her relationship with John.

The best part of this that made it unique was the elements you don’t think you’ll come across, the darkness, mystical side of things threw a spanner in it for me. I loved how the cases built into the plot had a personal connection, these were cases that Karen’s father had worked on and could not solve.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it certainly won’t be the last. I read this in a day, I couldn’t put it down and my attention was absorbed every page of the way. Epic.

When DS Karen Thorpe finds herself at the centre of three, decades old cold cases, little does she realise it will bring her in touch with the supernatural and the mysterious Mr Binks, the owner of a bookshop with a fascination for old maps.
This was a great read, seamlessly blending both the supernatural and Karen’s determined police work. John is the perfect foil for her, and as a pair they work brilliantly together. The story had me gripped from the first page, and at times I could feel a shiver run over me. It kept me in suspense throughout as I hoped that Karen would be able to solve the cases.
Three Little Girls is one of those books you can easily imagine being made into a t.v. series or movie and if it did, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I would certainly be watching it.

Three little girls by Jane Badrock.
THREE COLD CASES ONE DETERMINED COP

Someone's playing tricks on Karen at home and at work. When two cold case files about missing girls turn up on her desk, she's fuming. When a third file arrives… she blows a fuse.
Her boss demands she takes holiday leave just as Karen discovers her late father was involved in one of the cases. Now she's compelled to investigate them.

Karen’s accompanied by sometime boyfriend John- but can she trust him or his friend and mapkeeper Mr Binks?

She has formidable detective skills but will they work in places where old-world magic is still powerful?

Karen's life is in serious danger… but from whom…. or what?
I really enjoyed this book. Great story. Karen was my favourite character. What a read. 5*.

The story follows Karen Thorpe and John Steel as they try to solve 3 cold cases of missing girls that seem connected. The story overall is good and I really like the Karen Thorpe series however this book heads over into supernatural territory which is something I’m not keen on hence the lower score. It is wonderfully written and the Scottish characters I found I read with a Scottish accent (I work on the Scottish border so I kept reading it in the voice of people I work with)
I did enjoy the basis of the story but as I said supernatural is not my thing so I didn’t enjoy that aspect. The rest of the Karen Thorpe series is great.

This is a little different from the books I normally read, having a touch of the paranormal but on saying that I really enjoyed this book. Karen Thorpe is a bit of a cold fish, very antsy and sharp with her team but I think this adds to the story and makes a change from having a detective everyone loves! I actually like the relationship she has with her team, it certainly adds to the story in my opinion. This books also features a brilliant character called Mr Binks and I soooooo want to meet him lol. Overall, another great book from Jane and I can highly recommend.

Just the right mix of thriller, suspense, mystery and paranormal!

Three Little Girls is a thriller with a difference. If you want something fast paced but with the right amount of detail, this is the book for you.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. It had all the suspense of a cold case thriller with a few spooks thrown in!

This is the perfect book to settle down with after a long day. It will immediately draw you in and leave you wanting to read well into the night.

This is a great book and one I thoroughly enjoyed reading, a combination of different genres resulting in a unique reading experience. I loved the dialogue particularly in Three Little Girls, and because of this I felt it was very visual, the scenes literally played out in my head. As someone else said, I could easily imagine this on TV or the Big Screen. A well deserved 5 star from me.

A supernatural crime story not my usual genre but gave it a try.
Karen receives the cold cases of 3 missing girls from 50yr ago and no one knows where they came from. She is then told to take sick leave so she takes her work home hoping to find the girls.
I loved the beginning but when it turned to supernatural it lost my interest.
If you like supernatural this is a good book to read.

Really enjoyed reading this book and even though it was different from my usual reads it was still gripping. I couldn't wait to follow the twists and turns to see what happened. Well worth investing the time into the story and characters
