Returning to London scarred and bitter after his capture by Napoleon’s forces, Morgan, Marquess of Searle, is hell-bent on vengeance against the man responsible for his imprisonment. He’ll do anything to get what he wants, even if it means destroying an innocent in the process. There’s just one problem. He’s never met anyone like the woman he intends to use for his revenge.
Lady Leonora Forsythe has suffered enough awkward seasons. She longs to find a husband and make a family of her own. After the wickedly handsome Marquess of Searle ruins her, she has no intention of falling in love with the cold, distant stranger she’s forced to wed. But it doesn’t take long for her to realize there’s far more to the marquess than she ever supposed. Or to hope she may be the one to heal his inner torment.
When Leonora is in Morgan’s arms, reprisal is the last thing on his mind. With time running out and the truth looming, he must choose between the need for retribution and the fierce wife who unexpectedly owns his heart.
Heat level: Scorching hot! Don't say you weren't warned.
USA TODAY bestselling author Scarlett Scott writes steamy Victorian and Regency historical romances with strong, intelligent heroines and sexy alpha heroes. She lives in Pennsylvania and Maryland with her Canadian husband, their adorable identical twins, a demanding diva dog, and one zany cat.
I really liked this book. It was about a man filled with hate and planning on wedding the heroine as revenge. But the jokes on him. She totally heals his heart and makes him a better man. He compromised her so she would have to marry him but the heroine didn't know that. She as attrActed to him and just thought he was being kind. I really loved how he fought his feelings for her but he couldn't. She was such a strong heroine and she saw him as a better man. After the marriage it got pretty steamy between them. Big time. Hot sex scenes and quite a few of them. You could feel the passion. Great writing. Totally safe too and in KU.
I've been reading this off and on since August 31, and I can not figure out why I didn't enjoy it more.
Nice revenge plot, brooding hero, loving-if a little too good to be true heroine, solid writing, hot sex/romance but eh.
As is typical, the H is going to get his revenge via a secondary source: he will seduce his evil foe's sister and MARRY her. Ooh, shiver me timbers. He falls in love/lust with her off the bat, but is still all brooding and dark.
As for the heroine, I did not buy the fact that she is such a wallflower. Yes, she has a limp from a fall as a child, but she sounds as pretty as the lovely heroine on the cover, is sweet, comes from a nice family, and has a dowery, so what's the problem you little Lords of England?
My complaints are pretty minimal as overall it is well done, but for some reason just did not capture me. I will definitely read more of Scarlet Scott as the h's brother is up next I believe.
P.S. Is it just me, or does she look like Parker Posey with pale hair?
Plenty of angst, a warm hearted heroine and a uber broody hero hellbent on revenge, should have resulted in an awesome read, and yet I finished this wrinkling my nose a little unhappy.
I really wish the hero had had to grovel for all his lies and manipulation.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 A book to make your heart beat faster and your tears flow freely, The Marquess Of Mayhem is beautiful in its telling , terrible in its hero’s experiences and breathtaking in its overall storyline.
The characters were awesome and the book in general stunning and one of my favourites now.
These characters became part of my life ,in the time it took to read I became absorbed into their lives .
Beautiful writing from Scarlett Scott , so moving in Her description of Morgan’s war and prison experiences, it brought me to tears .
His need for revenge although hard on his wife , I understood and had massive sympathy with, I felt so much for him with his mental demons tormenting him constantly .
His wife Leoni what a strong woman to deal with her challenges, she is an angel.
One to put you through the ringer for sure . It did me . But you won’t regret a minute of it .
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
👍But there are two positive things in the plot/book… the heroine is a tiny bit “older” (29) and that there is some disability rep (the heroine has a lame leg.) But unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives way too much……...
*** 3.75 stars *** I love nothing more than a fiesty heroine who knows when to take her stand and a strong hero who knows how to treat a woman!
A beautifully carved story of sacrifice and hope❤️. Morgan is a STRONG man. He is the real example of optimism. I can't even believe the things he's gone through but still in the end he choose to forget about all his dark past and move on in his life.
Leonora, she's knows her worth and that's all what matters. 🔥
A story that will pull your emotions in every direction and back again with a hero bent on revenge and a heroine only wanting what seemed the impossible, a husband and family. "Revenge would soon be his. He could taste it, bitter and dark and delicious, upon his tongue. He could feel it in the surge, the pounding pulse of blood coursing through his veins, much as it had before a battle: fierce, fast, consuming. For the first time since his return to London, since his captivity, he felt alive." Just a taste of this author's amazing descriptions that always make me feel as if I am there in the mind of the character. Imagine a man, tortured beyond endurance in the war, somehow surviving to come back to polite society. His focus was revenge on the person who had made his life unbearable, because he tried not to remember the horrors or he would become a madman. Unfortunately the journey included ruining that devil's sister, who was almost a spinster at twenty nine. She could not believe he was paying attention to her and of all things they end up married! Running the gamet of emotions and containing everything that makes a story one to long be remembered, I have to put this one on my list of great stories for this year. Of course I feel that way about all of Scarlett's stories and I urge you to read and enjoy this one! Sigh...
Morgan is seeking revenge against Lord Rayne so he marries Lady Leonora to make her brother suffer like he had suffered when he was captured in war but all of his carefully made plans starts to change when he begins to have feelings for his sweet wife. What will be his choice in the end? The love he have for her or his need for revenge. This was a emotional read that made you connect with both perspectives and makes you want to see the couple have a happy ending.

The beginning of this book wasn’t really endearing. Sure, the hero was angry and out for revenge, but the heroine wasn’t introduced in a lovable way. She was filled with self-pity and a dash of bitterness and I just wished she was sweeter so that I could love her at once. Even as it went on, I couldn’t connect with the characters and it was a bit tough to continue. After reading Earl Of every sin though, I’m confident the author has other books I’ll love.
Morgan, the Marquess of Searle escaped from a French prison and made his way home. He still carries the scars on his body and mind of what happened there. Now he is determined to get revenge on the man who put him in that hell. Lady Leonora Forsyth has given up hope of ever finding a husband. She is twenty-nine and has a limp . Not exactly the type of woman that the men her mothers wants for her, are looking for. So why is the mysterious and dangerous Marquess suddenly noticing her. This is a beauty and the beast type story. Our heroine has so much to offer the right man, but our hero doesn't deserve her. An emotional tale with terrific characters that have a lot to sort out before they get what they want. Great fun. `
This book rocked me! A broken, scarred hero who thinks he is incapable of love and is bent on revenge? Check!
A sweet, fierce, virtuous and gentle heroine whose softness is strong enough to break down the heroes walls of reserve and coldness? Check!
Lots of steamy scenes with a possessive hero and a heroine finds ecstasy in his arms? Ohhhh yeah!
I don’t have to go over the plot—that’s what blurbs are for—but the story was filled with lots of angst, deep emotion and even some laughter. (Can’t wait till Monty gets his comeuppance!)
The second book in this series that I have read and enjoyed - not reading them in order, as I started with # 5. Great portrayal of both a hero (Searle) with PTSD and a heroine (Leonora) who was judged by the men and society of the time by a limp caused by an old injury. She was not judged by her nature or as a person. Forgiveness and love came but not without pain and trials. We got to meet others in the series especially the disreputable Monty who's book I have read and enjoyed. Everybody hides secret pain but does overcome it.
Reread August 2021 Still as great as the first read.
The Marquess of Searle is set on revenge! Lady Leonora is a spinster with a limp and the sister to the man who allowed Searle to be captured and tortured. So his revenge plot begins with her ruin. This is a story of love triumphing over vengeance. I have loved this series from the beginning and can’t wait for the Earl’s tale.
I just couldn't get into the characters of the book. The heroine was breathtaking but a spinster and 27. The revenge plot was a bit weak and "her goodness shown through" after a total of 4 week engagement" and a 2 week marriage.
Nothing sells a romance quite like redemption. The Marquess of Searle is broken and vengeful after his ordeals in war. Set on revenge he seeks to marry the sister of the man he holds responsible. He does not plan to gain a weakness of his own, but his heart is quickly stolen by his Leoni. He must choose vengeance or love? Their path is rough, full of strained emotion and tortured desire. This story is angsty, full of tension but with a beautiful message of healing the past and embracing the power of love.
4 stars thoroughly entertaining as an SS book usually is. Tormented Morgan saved by Leonie’s love, well told revenge trope started immediately, but the middle was a bit repetitious in terms of story depth then a brisk pace to the HEA. The MMC’s pain and conflict was clearly evident and you couldn’t help feeling sorry for him in spite of his actions, made his recovery more heart warming.
I DNF This started out SO promising. I started this last night and now I’m at 88% of the book. I’m so irrevocably angry I can’t even begin.
The 3 stars I’m giving are for the beginning to middle, once we hit maybe 60%— it was a nope. Also, because I clearly love her writing enough to care this deeply lol
Let me preface this by saying Scarlett is one of my favorite authors. Her stories take me on a journey where I sometimes I have to remember I’m just reading a story. But the last two books I’ve read by her (Forever Her Rake and this one) have had revenge plots against the heroine and both of these heroines, forgive so easily and there’s no remorse from our hero— if you can even call him that. I’ve just been getting so angry because some of the things these men have done are just so horrific and I’m supposed to be rooting for them? I’m supposed to be on their side? And I want them to end up together? I don’t know if it’s just me having a lot more respect for myself as I grow older but I would never let a man treat me like the way that they have without some sort of groveling in the end. Without some sort of real true remorse to save their relationship. It disgusts me how easily these women forgive the horrific things that these men have done to them, and I know, I know that it’s supposed to portray her as a selfless, caring, beautiful, graceful creature, who can forgive and love. OR, just let the men do whatever the fuck they want to and we still love you! And I guess it’s the time period as well— where a woman’s life is just based on what she can do for a man. This is exhausting.
Maybe that’s why I don’t have books written about me. I’d go off the handles. I would make them BEG for my love back. BEG. I.E — Scarlett’s Dangerous Duke (told you I love her work) Griffin deceives Violet pretty badly, and you know what this man did? He followed her, found her, cried at her feet, apologized to her wholeheartedly. THAT is what we want. Especially from a stubborn DICK like Morgan.
But I am just so hurt when I read these kind of stories where the man gets ANY real punishment? That women can get treated like this and wanna go back to their “love” without some sort of apology. I mean like a real apology, they’ll give these half ass apologies about how they hurt them, and they never meant to do it, but they love them now, and they’re never gonna hurt them in the future, but… I wouldn’t be able to forgive them just quite yet, even after one apology.
Leonora just found out that her entire marriage was based on revenge and she spent one day away from him just to come back to him and be like “it’s OK, tell me everything, I’m here for you”. And then calm him down by sleeping with him? I just—- Are you kidding me? Like what he did is BAD, BAD. At least give yourself some distance for a bit from him? One day?! ONE F’ING DAY?!
Scarlett, why??
Another one of Scarlett’s, The Prince of Persuasion had a similar revenge theme, but it was just SO well done. It has to be my number one of her’s. Truly. Duncan reaaaalllly betrays Frederica, my heart BROKEN into pieces, but you could tell Duncan cared. You could feel his remorse and the need to win her back after his betrayal.
Morgan over here, at this point the 88% mark, really doesn’t seem to care enough about Leonora to stop his revenge plot. Yes, he’s apologized and was mentally suffering from her ultimately figuring out he duped her. But he more so was suffering because he knew that once she found out she would leave him. SELFISH. It was more about him and really not about her. I don’t doubt he loved her but, Leonora keeps begging for Morgan and her brother not to duel. And from where I’m at at this point, Morgan doesn’t seem to be relenting from this duel, which means he’s still using her for revenge! He hasn’t given it up! He’s still going after it by hurting her! And not even listening to her pleas?! And, I’m supposed to root for a jackass like him? He was SO promising.
SO promising. Listen, i don’t know if there is a big grovel at the end or not. And I really don’t care. Morgan can F himself and Leonora needs to grow a backbone.
Scarlett Scott is a favorite author of mine & she has outdone herself in the creation of Morgan & Leoni's emotional voyage to their HEA.
Lady Leonora Forsythe was a 29 year old spinster with a limp left from a childhood injury but was such a strong, kind & beautiful lady that I loved from the very first pages of the book.
Morgan, the Marquess of Searle had recently returned to England after being held prisoner by the 1/2 brother of Leoni, the Earl of Rayne. His only purpose in life, now, was to exact revenge against the earl & what better way than to marry his 1/2 sister - 1 step closer to vindication.
The marriage between Morgan & Leoni was very emotional & she was so strong, kind & understanding of his darkness from the imprisonment - wait until she finds out he only married her for retribution. Morgan had many dark things happening to him after his physical & mental torture but somehow Leoni was tearing down the walls around his heart.
I highly recommend this book - it's an emotional tale & you'll root for Morgan & Leoni's happiness from the beginning. I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
Morgan, the Marquess of Searle, was presumed dead after he was betrayed in a covert campaign during the French War. Captured and tortured by Napoleon’s forces; by the time he escaped he was a scared and bitter man. Only one thing stayed with him constantly, his determination to destroy the man that betrayed him. Morgan could care less if that meant the innocent life of sister of that man. Lady Leonora Forsythe, whose older half-brother, was by her father’s first wife, a Spanish woman; was the lady of Morgan’s desire. She was a pretty spinster of 29 and lived a quite life due to an accident when she was a child. Morgan never considered that this woman would become to mean more to him that he imagined. With her striking beauty and gentle soul, she worked her way into his mind and conscience. Scarlett Scott shares with us a wonderful adventure of an English Soldier trying to fight the demons that want to consume his soul. What an interesting romantic journey we are permitted to read and what a page turned it turns out to be.
Dear me, one more author who thinks using automatic online translators is a good idea when a character needs to express himself in a foreign language.
So... when the Marquess is begging his French torturers not to hurt him, he screams "Ne pas ! Ne pas !" Well, it's no wonder they did NOT stop torturing him, since it does not. Make. Any. Fucking. Sense.
Please, authors, when you don't know the language, have a modicum of respect for those of your readers who do: ask someone who is fluent in this language. Emphasis on someone. Not. A. Bloody. Robot.
Oh, and by the way, I am currently reading Earl of Every Sin and though I'm no Spanish speaker, I'm still pretty sure that "Al diablo con el" is NOT how a Spaniard would say "To the devil with you".
The author showed a very good command of the written word early on, describing emotion, etc. which drew me in. I thought there was chemistry between the H/h and I thought the plot has some merit.
But at about 25%, I began to have a problem with all the talk and no action. Then we proceeded to the sex scenes. I have no problem with the sex as long as it furthers the plot. But, in this book, I did not feel so many sex scenes enhanced the story.
SPOILER ALERT: Then we find out the bad guy is not really the bad guy. That just made the hero look weaker than I was already beginning to believe he was.
I stopped reading at 87%. I no longer cared about the outcome!
Every once in a while, I go a couple of weeks without picking up a book. It takes a bit of a nudge to get me out of a no-reading slump, and this book did the trick! One of my favorite premises, some nice angst and a lot of sex. Not terribly keen on the message in real life; But, it catered to some favored tropes so I liked it. (3.5 stars)
Had a rollicking good time reading this cute love story. Lots of romance, humor. And good spice. Loved both Morgan and Leonora, and there rocky romance. I was pulling for them. Couldn’t wait to see what happened next. I definitely recommend this book.
