I fell in love with historical romances and all things Regency—and especially all those dashing Regency heroes—while living in England, where I spent most of my time studying the Romantic poets, reading Jane Austen, and getting lost all over the English countryside.

When I read my first Regency romance in 2012, I was hooked and longed to create my own independent and spirited heroines and dashing heroes. The best part of writing historical romances is falling into history—to live in the world of Regency England through my characters, with dazzling balls, beautiful dresses, and gorgeous houses that I would otherwise never be able to experience. I love the period’s rich history and find that all those rules of etiquette and propriety can be worked to the heroine’s advantage…if she’s daring enough to seize her dreams.

In addition to earning my degrees in the U.S., I have studied theatre in London, Mexican history in Guadalajara, and Spanish in Ecuador. I am an avid traveler and have enjoyed visiting schools and volunteering with children's organizations in Peru, Ecuador, Thailand, and Mexico, and I have amassed thousands of photos I unleash on unsuspecting friends who dare to ask about my travels.

I love to be outdoors! I've been hiking in Alaska, the Andes, and the Alps, including one week spent dangling off the via ferrata in the Italian Dolomites, and I love whitewater rafting (when I don't fall in!). I earned my pilot’s license at Chicago Midway (To all the controllers in Chicago Center—I greatly apologize for every problem I caused for you and Southwest Airlines), and it is my dream to one-day fly in a hot-air balloon over Africa.

I adore all things chocolate, shamelessly dive into ice cream of any flavor, and guzzle Kona coffee by the gallon. A Doctor Who fanatic (everyone says my house is bigger on the inside), I am a terrible cook who hopes to one day use my oven for something other than shoe storage. When I'm not writing, I like to spend my time trying not to kill the innocent rose bushes in my garden.

3.5 stars! I enjoyed it but our heroine was super super stubborn and I was like???? Please. Just talk to him and have an open conversation. And he had to keep trying to convince her. It got tiring to read.

A horrible carriage accident changed Lady Clara Marshall's life. She lost the use of one of her legs, causing her to retreat from society and end her secret engagement to Michael Stanton, Duke of Wakefield. When Clara is coerced into traveling for Christmas, a winter storm and damaged bridge lead her back to the future she thought was lost.

This is an emotional and heartwarming stand alone story. Clara has isolated herself after the accident, refusing to be stared at and pitied. Her meddling brother and Mother Nature intervene and Clara is "trapped" at Michael's estate. Michael hasn't stopped loving Clara and he's determined to use this opportunity to show Clara how to live again. They have such a wonderful connection and the writing beautifully illustrates their longing for each other. This book has the lighthearted addition of Michael's nieces and nephews, who evoke all the joy and spirit of the holidays!

Oh! This was a warm, uplifting, romantic, and wonderful read. The writing is excellent, the story is well-told, and the characters are warm and loving. I absolutely adored the four children in the tale, and I think you will as well.

Sometimes, what someone might view as their unselfish act of love is really a selfish act born from their own despair and insecurity. When you, alone, make a decision that affects both of you, that is selfish because that takes away the other person's choice. That is what we have in this story. Michael Stanton, Duke of Wakefield, and Lady Clara Marshall have known and loved each other all of their lives. Their lives were the stuff of fairy tales and they reveled in every minute of it. At least they did until two years ago when there was a horrendous phaeton accident that gravely injured Clara and took the life of the friend who was driving.

Left grossly scarred and unable to ever walk again, Clara breaks off her betrothal to Michael and becomes a recluse. She allows herself to wallow in self-pity, feel sorry for herself, and become totally dependent on others taking care of her. She never gave Michael a chance to agree or disagree with the breakup. No, she just decided it was in his self-interest and sent him a letter canceling their betrothal.

Clara hasn’t set eyes on Michael since the accident. She’s still desperately in love with him, but she knows he needs to marry someone who can give him the full life and family he deserves. As she and her brother Anthony are traveling north to Scotland for the Christmas holidays, a terrible snowstorm begins, temperatures drop, and the bridge they need to cross is damaged. Since they cannot stay in the carriage and all of the inns are full, Anthony decides to take Clara to Northbourne Park – Michael’s estate. Clara fights the decision but finally has no other choice.

Then, a wonderous Christmas miracle begins when Clara has to stay at Northbourne Park while Anthony continues north. You’ll totally fall in love with Michael as you see him unabashedly manipulate Clara into coming out into the world again. It is little by little, but she leaves her room more often and finds she can enjoy things again. Michael loves Clara as much as he ever has and he’ll do whatever he can to help her – even if it means she’ll decide to leave him again.

When you add Michael’s four precocious nieces and nephews into the mix along with Michael’s abiding love, you come up with a totally epic Christmas story. Your heart will swell as you see Clara grow and learn that her life can still be full and meaningful even if she can no longer walk.

If you are looking for a wonderful, heart-warming, romantic Christmas story, then this is just the book for you. I hope you will read it and love it as much as I did.

One 0f my new favorite Christmas romances!!

This is the second chance romance between Clara and Michael. A year ago, Clara was in a carriage accident that left her heavily injured. She is now unable to have mobility in one of her legs. She decided to cut off her engagement with the love of her life (Michael) because she thought she was no longer worthy of him and the dukedom. However, all this time Michael believed she ended things with him because she blamed him for the accident.

It is now Christmas time, and Clara and her brother have nowhere to stay during the holidays due to a bridge collapsing on their way home. Michael lets them stay in his home with open arms, but he has an ulterior motive. He plans on wooing Clara all over again during her stay at his estate.

UGHHHH MICHAELLLL!! I love him!! He would do absolutely anything for Clara!!! I showed that woman how much he truly loves her🥹 Their romance was the sweetest!

MEMORABLE QUOTES:
- "I'll never stop loving you or trying to make you happy."
- "You have no idea how much I loved you - how much I still love you - and that love for you could never be a burden. It would only ever be a blessing."

TROPES: Christmas, cinnamon roll hero, historical romance, historical standalone, historicals with disability rep, disability rep, longing, second chance

I REALLY LOVED THIS ONE!!!! Despite the over the top stubbornness Clara was stewing, this was a really good short holiday historical romance. My only grip is that there was no epilogue and I wanted more even Anthony to find out the truth about his friend Michael and his relationship with secret relationship with Clara. This second chance romance was certainly a highlight and I actually did get teary eyed a few times. Def. on my favorites shelf.

An absolutely heartwarming second chance at love. While I love a book with a villain it was really refreshing to have a non villain read. Harrington lets us into the lives of Clara and Michael and shows us that love at Christmas helps to heal even the most broken of hearts. I loved Clara and Michael and their story. They were desperately in love with each other only to have their lives drastically changed when Clara was injured in a carriage accident. Christmas, love, a little help from staff and kids, and of course passion creates a perfect holiday historical read!

Lovely second chance at love story featuring Michael Stanton, the Duke of Wakefield and Lady Clara Marshall. Clara was in a horrible accident and has hidden herself from everything, including her former fiancé, Michael. Caught in a winter storm on the way to her brother's country home these two are forced together again, and the feelings are real. Ms Harrington's writing immerses you in the story, the surroundings and the characters emotions. Also loved the Christmas traditions included in this story. Highly recommend.

He definitely saved my Christmas!!! That was amazing!

The best Christmas read I've read and one of the best historical romances in general. The writing of this book was wonderful. It was so vigilant, with such attention to the characters' psyches. Clara and Michael were wonderful together, as their chemistry created a bittersweet combination of reminiscing and relearning the person they thought they knew. The level of vulnerability in this book was so moving.

Clara's disability was depicted in a very realistic manner: the insecurities that an injury like this can cause and the social, personal, and psychological consequences, as well as how long-term this trauma can last. Michael was an example of a person's irrational guilt and how isolating that can be. This relationship created a mutual pinning and yearning that was so sad and deep that it made me cry like a baby.

Also, I appreciated that the FMC was not completely inexperienced. It is time to spice things up on that aspect of historical romance as far as female characters are concerned. Clara's sexual awareness was so refreshing; in combination with Michael's emotional intelligence and security in his feelings, it created a very compelling love story.

I think I just found a new author to devour her whole bibliography!!!

The most perfect story to bring the heart joy and romance coming into the Holiday season. When all might seem lost, there is always a possible way to regain happiness again. Such is the tale of Lady Clara and Michael, Duke of Wakefield.

A storytale love that seemed unbreakable until the worst happened and Clara was left without the use of her legs. She broke things off with Michael, hoping to never see him again.

Then fate intervened (although I think it was more than that!) and she ended up stranded at his manor due to the weather. What would happen now?

Anna never fails to grab the heart and not let go with her amazing writing and this is one of my favorites! Snuggle up and sit back and enjoy.

A short read story of a second chance romance over Christmas. Michael is a very likable MMC and I liked the fact that he wasn’t portrayed as a rogue, as dukes frequently are in historical romances. Clara was a bit overly stubborn, though perhaps understandable given her circumstances. Low to no angst, a miscommunication trope running throughout the story, and generally great writing, as is norm for Anna Harrington.

What a perfect read for Christmas. This was a lovely sweet read that I found hard to put down. The characters were wonderful and I loved the children. All though a sad story it had a wonderful end with some action and suspense. There was of course a sex scene which this reviewer skipped and if didn’t affect my enjoyment of the story. Well worth the read. I received this as an ARC and freely give my review.

A tender, poignant and emotional tale that makes for perfect holiday reading, Anna Harrington’s How the Duke Saved Christmas is the perfect Yuletide treat for historical romance fans everywhere!

Two years ago, Lady Clara Marshall was leading a charmed life. The beloved sister of an Earl who was feted and admired wherever she went, Clara had secured the affections of a man she had fallen head over heels in love with and was looking forward to a long and happy future with him – until a cruel twist of fate had put paid to all of her hopes and dreams. A tragic phaeton accident had cost her her future happiness and the use of her right leg. Having once been the toast of the Ton, Clara is now a recluse who never ventures out of the house, but could all that be set to change this Christmas?

Clara hadn’t been exactly thrilled at traveling north for the festive season and when a snowstorm compels her to seek shelter, the thought of being in a stranger’s house doesn’t fill her heart with joy. However, it turns out that the person offering her a refuge from the storm is the very last man she had ever thought she would clap eyes on. The man she had never stopped loving whom she can no longer have: her former fiancé, Michael Stanton, Duke of Wakefield.

Two years ago, Michael’s world had stopped when he had witnessed the wreckage that had resulted in his beloved Clara losing the use of her right leg. His heart had been broken into a million tiny pieces when Clara had broken off their engagement and he can barely believe his eyes that she is now standing in front of him in desperate need of shelter from the storm. Michael knows that Clara blames him for the accident and he had resigned himself to never being with the woman he loves, but now that fate – and her meddling brother – have conspired together to reunite them, he vows to do whatever it takes to show Clara that she is the woman for him.

Being in Michael’s house surrounded by so many memories of the past is the very last place Clara wants to be in. Will Michael be able to prove to her that he is still madly in love with her? Is a future for the two of them possible? Or is their relationship simply not meant to be?

Anna Harrington’s How the Duke Saved Christmas is a charming, moving and compelling second chance historical romance that will melt readers’ hearts and have them reaching for the tissues. A beautifully told tale about letting go of the past, new beginnings and love lost and found, readers will love Clara and swoon over honorable and charismatic Michael.

A lovely historical romance from a very gifted writer, readers are going to thoroughly enjoy Anna Harrington’s How the Duke Saved Christmas.

Anna Harrington brings the perfect tale to start off the holidays in How the Duke Saved Christmas!

Lady Clara Marshall lived in relative isolation after a tragic accident that left her with a limited ability to walk. While her outer scars healed her emotional scars festered keeping her locked in a place filled with pain and self denial of the potential life still held for her. Michael Stanton the Duke of Wakefield seemed to have always been in love with Clara, she was his "match" until she called things off and refused to deal with him leaving his heart in limbo and directionless.

When circumstances literally delivered Clara to Michael's doorstep it seemed like fate was not through with this couple. Long pent up emotions flared, setting off a long dormant but not extinguished simmering heat between them. Clara's stubbornness set in and her refusal to not reach for happiness was well met by Michael's perseverance to ensure she found happiness. Armed with small children, dedicated staff, Clara's brother Anthony and a love that would not die Michael set forth to give Clara the HEA that was always meant for them.

This was a lovely story of two lonely hearts reunited, where love never died but instead lingered waiting to bloom. Ms. Harrington did a wonderful job of sorting through Clara's often misguided sensibilities without writing off her feelings as trivial. With perceptive writing this author found a way to make Clara's vulnerability the catalyst for finding her strength. Michael was the kind of hero who knew his way around grand gestures but it was his small day-to-day expressions that showed the depth of his caring and undying devotion, making him irresistible to Clara and readers alike. Filled with charming secondary characters this story was beautifully rounded out balancing past pain with the joy of the present and the hope of the future.

As to be expected Anna Harrington continues to give new life to history in her stories using detailed and fascinating facts as the backdrop for her engaging portrayals. This writer does a wonderful job of merging facts with fiction for standout reads. The historical notes at the end of her story are not only a great bonus but show how much research this author puts into her work. Anna Harrington's How the Duke Saved Christmas is a present to her readers that they will cherish for years to come!

I think I got this as a kindle freebie or at least a 99p special - well I hope so because I'd be gutted to find out I had paid full price for this disappointment.

There was a lot to love, but the "I'm not good enough for you" (which I've heard called White Fanging recently) vibe is soooo painful. Especially as it's based on a physical disability - one that is made out to be much more restrictive than it actually is. It feels to me that Clara is suffering more from her reaction (possibly depression? but I'm not a doctor) to her disability than to the actual disability itself, and that is very much a missed opportunity here. And whilst I often say that I appreciate that not all FMCs have to have a backbone of steel, she seemed to have ZERO fight in her whatsoever, even once she is utterly aware of Michaels's feelings for her.

Also, because of said disability, there is a lot of reliance placed on the house's various (numerous!) staff, and not a single one of these critical red shirts have any agency or a voice whatsoever. Again, another missed opportunity, because apart from anything else, it could have been interesting to hear their various opinions on the situation and how Clara was/wasn't dealing with things and how they felt about being at her back and call for so many things.

And there lies one of the major problems I have with HR in general and why I was put off for so long in my romance reading 'career', which is a real shame on this occasion as otherwise, it could have been a great reading experience overall as Micheal was, for the most part, a devoted and loving person... albeit somewhat mildly manipulative. He is a wonderful uncle to four great kids who are with him for the holidays which as not mentioned in the synopsis came as a welcome surprise to me. And these kids play a huge part in the story and are the crux of the third act conflict aka the 'ding ding' 💡 moment.

This is also a prime example of a book that would have really benefitted by having an epilogue of some years down the road to show how Clara came to terms with her disability and how it really didn't stop her as much as she thought it did.

This is such a wonderful second chance story set during the Christmas holidays! I enjoyed every minute of how it unfolded. I adore 2nd chance stories and it's a brother's best friend story too! Put together with 4 adorable children interacting with the Duke & Lady Clara just adds icing on the cake! It is a Christmas celebration with all the trimmings full of joy and giving spirit. It shows the miracles that can come from love for others and sheer determination to not ever give up on someone. This is a strong story of the strength of love, family, friends & heart.

Lady Clara Marshall is horribly crippled after a carriage accident 2 years ago and has walled herself away from life thinking she's worthless now and a burden to everyone. She broke off her secret engagement to her brother's best friend thinking she was unable now that she can't walk to be his Duchess. Her brother Earl Camden, Anthony is at his wits end trying to convince her to rejoin life, much less society, as she sits in her room day after day with her nurse-companion Mrs. Bailey. On their trip to Anthony's country estate, Raleigh Hall, where his wife is about to give birth to their 2nd child, the bridge goes out and they have to seek shelter at Northbourne Park. The Duke of Wakefield, Michael Stanton is Anthony's best friend and unbeknownst to him Clara's former love.

When Anthony travels by horse without Clara, Michael is delighted at his 2nd chance opportunity and is determined to get her to rejoin life with others. He uses everything he knows about her to accomplish is goal, including using his 4 nieces and nephews. He's caring for his brother's children on school holiday while they are in Vienna on a diplomatic mission. Clara has a weakness for children and he uses it to perfection and the reader's delight.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Christmas 1814. Two years ago Lady Clara Marshall was injured horribly in a phaeton accident, changing everything about her life as she knew it. From Incomparable to disabled in the flash of an eye, and unable to take more than a few steps even with a cane, she shuns everything about her previous society life, including the man she once thought she would marry. Traveling with her brother Anthony two weeks before Christmas on the way to his estate, beset by damaged bridges and a blizzard, they must stop for shelter at the home of Michael Stanton, Duke of Wakefield, that very same man Clara once loved. Anthony continues on, leaving Clara in Michael’s care, with the company of his four nieces and nephews, and instructions not only to care for her but to help her regain some happiness. With a determined duke and rambunctious children, Clara starts to see joy and regain some independence.

@bluestockinglaura recommended this one, and I patiently waited for a copy from the library, which arrived several weeks after Christmas. I did not care in the least. My tree stays up year round, and I’m happy to keep celebrating the holidays well into the Epiphany season. You’ll all absolutely be hearing from me and Laura again next Christmas season about this book, reminding you to pick it up!

I don’t normally care for second chance romances, and second chance at Christmas is ordinarily beyond sappy for my tastes, but this Christmas novel was sweet, sensitive, heartwarming, and joyful. I recognize Clara’s stubbornness in some of my own recovery - even though my disability is temporary, I know how easy it becomes to define your life by what you can’t do rather than by what you can. Michael’s care and tenderness towards Clara, and his determination to help her see what she is capable of, is a gentle steadfast mark of love. “You’re not perfect, Clara, you never were. This scar doesn’t make you any less beautiful…you’re even more beautiful because of this.”

A super sweet Christmas tale about second chances and truly taking life by lapels and running with it.

After a carriage accident left Lady Clara with a disabled leg, she hides from life and sent away the love of her life and promised husband. Michael had always wanted one thing in life and that was to love and live with Clara as his wife but she calls off the engagement without an explanation and disappears from his life.

On a trip with her brother to his country estate for Christmas, circumstances throw Lady Clara right in the lap of Michael aka The Duke of Wakefield just a few weeks before the Christmas festivities.

Poor Clara is such at odds with herself. She sees her disability as a burden to those around her and with a few other distressing issues the accident brought on, she felt she had to break the engagement with Michael. But Michael, still wants nothing but Clara as his and with the help of her brother, he sets upon a quest to not only bring the Christmas cheer to the house but the cheer back in Clara's life.

This was so sweet. I love everything that Michael did to draw Clara out of spending every minute in her room and his nieces and nephews were adorable. The surprises Michael has for Clara are about pushing her but only to push her to see what she is capable of. He never pushes her to a point that is harmful, only helpful and he gets to see the Lady Clara he fell in love with.

Having a backstory for Michael and Clara was helpful. Though I felt the ache of Clara missing the exhilaration of dancing with Michael, I am sure he will find many other ways to get her heart racing.

This was a joyful and lovely book to spend a Saturday with getting lost in the spirit of romance at Christmas.

This was my introduction to the authors work and I look forward to more stories as this one captivated me from start to finish.

This is a wonderful second chance story. Set at Christmas time it has wonderful characters especially the children.
Lady Clara had a life that was just about perfect, the life of balls, society loved her, she did charity work and was deeply in love with her childhood sweetheart. Best friend of her brother, Anthony. Then two years ago everything was gone.
After a phaeton accident that left one leg useless, she does not go out the house in London. She has cut all her friends out of her life, her charity work even music she loved. Worst she cut the love of her life off and has had a broken heart ever since. But she could not deal with him pitying her.
Michael Stanton, Duke of Wakefield lost the love of his life two years ago. After a tragic accident, she refused to see him.
Broken heartened he has returned to his county estate Northbourne Park for Christmas.
Anthony and Clare are on the way to Anthony's home as his wife Marie is due with their second child when a Hugh snow storm stops them. They end up at Michael's home as there is no other place to stay out the storm.
With this second chance can Michael and Clara make up ? Can he help her see she is loved by many and not just pity?
With the help of his niece and nephew's, Margaret, Aron, Benjamin and cute little Susanna can they help her have a wonderful Christmas ? Will she be able to keep Michael at arm's length or can he help bring back some of the joy of life for her. Some many questions, and you will have to get a copy to find the answers.
This is a great Christmas love story of second chances and some surprises for all .
There really need to be and epilogue so we could get the answers to questions that made up a large part of the story.
I was left feeling like I missed a chapter or so at the end. It was much to rushed.

How the Duke Saved Christmas by Anna Harrington is a beautiful holiday story of second chances and healing.
Harrington has researched Christmas and Holiday traditions of the time (1814) so expertly that you will love the historical aspects while being thoroughly entertained.

One of my favorite tropes is forced proximity due to snow! Harrington wields this trope in such a fine way to land Lady Clara Marshall at the home of the last person she ever wants to see. Clara was in a carriage accident and lost the use of one of her legs. In response, she broke off her engagement and isolated herself within her brother’s household. Clara is traveling with her brother to get him home in time for the birth of his new baby. A snowstorm has left a bridge out and roads unpassable.

Michael Stanton, Duke of Wakefield, has been slowly mending a broken heart from his broken engagement and the guilt over a carriage accident. He has taken in his nieces and nephews for the holidays while their parents are abroad. He wants to make it a special family Christmas for them and then the love of his life reluctantly appears at his doorstep.

What I loved most about this novel is the children. Harrington writes them so realistically that I felt the joy of the season in their eyes. Harrington also wrote injury in a very realistic and emotional vein. This is a beautiful tale of second chances and family. Highly recommend!

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own. #Howthedukesavedchristmas #annaharrington #holidayromance #historicalromance #snowedin #christmashistoricalromance

This was a cute Christmas read that had a truly tender storyline with a unique take on a second-chance romance. There are parts of this story that are truly gut-wrenching, but the title is NOT a sad Christmas HR. The two main characters are dealing with a lot of miscommunication, lack of communication, and the pure stubborn nature of the MFC.

Michael is the stand-out character of this book. A massive round of applause for his patience with Clara as they work through her trauma, injuries, and stubborn nature. Clara is most definitely not my favorite main female character in an HR. Girl, just let him love you, babe.

Children do play a pivotal role in the main plotline of this title, but the children are nieves and nephews to Michael. They lend a great deal of help to Clara during her journey toward a second chance at love AND life with Michael.

Steam- alluded to language and not real explicit. Rather passionate and sweet.

Wow what a Romantic, enjoyable book this was. Two years ago, Lady Clara was enjoying the season and she felt like she had it all. She did charity work she enjoyed, but most of all she was in love with the Duke of Wakefield, Michael. This all changed for her when she was in an accident, and she lost the use of one of her legs. Because she could not walk, she did not go out, and did not want people to see her. She even broke up with her love Michael. On a trip to her brother’s house, there was a storm, and a bridge was not passable, so they had to find someone to stay with until the bridge opened. Her brother took her to his friends Michael’s house. It was the first time Michael and Clara has seen each other since her accident. Her brother had to rush home and left Clara with Michael. Michael’s nieces and nephews were staying with him over Christmas, and this is where the magic happened. I really liked Michael, he always loved Clara and wanted her to be happy and to enjoy life again. He was going to do everything he could to help her be happy. Anna Harrington writes a pleasant love story which makes you want it to never end. I am very pleased I read this book and look forward to reading more books by her.
I received an ARC of this book and am leaving my honest opinion.
