The yearly Necronote arrived. Soph felt sick to his stomach, same as he had for over three centuries. It meant one thing—kill, or be killed.

Birthday's should be a time for celebration, but for Necros they're a nightmare.

In the company of a jittery dragon wyrmling, and several new friends he meets along the way, Soph tries to keep it together as he battles magic way beyond his ken. Worse than that, he has to leave his family in the care of his mother-in-law, a witch bitch with annoyingly nice hair.

Soph's violent side is stretched to the limit as he does what it takes to continue his sorry existence, yet all he wants is peace. To watch his daughter grow, and be with the animals he has the gift of communicating with.

As the temperature in the United Kingdom soars to new heights, the ban on motor vehicles becomes absolute, and strict electric quotas tighten, it's like returning to a bygone age for our damaged zoolinguist.

But having to cycle to go kill a guy certainly has its drawbacks.

Welcome to the Necroverse, where the violence is brutal, the swearing graphic, and the unicorns are extra stupid. You have been warned!

Al K. Line has been entertaining readers for years with gritty characters rooted in the reality of everyday existence—even grumpy Necros need to go shopping! If you enjoy detailed dark urban fantasy and gripping paranormal suspense then you'll love Notes of Necrosoph. Full of dark magic, uppity cats, insane dwarves, rambunctious young dragons, sinister witches, and featuring a true anti-hero.

Full Disclosure – I was provided a copy of the book by the author as a member of his “A-Team”, however, have voluntarily chosen to write a review. All opinions are my own.

Urban fantasy with a twist

Necrosoph is your average 340 something Necro. Living quietly in the country with his wife, 7-year-old daughter, spastic dog, dumb unicorn, and a cat with an attitude Soph strives for a sense of normalcy. With the entire country in almost total lockdown and the world’s natural resources growing more endangered by the day, travel has been reduced to bicycles or foot traffic. The populace is monitored daily by drones in all their activities; to the point where recycling is mandatory down to the exact quantities. For the Necros, however, this is nothing compared to the added burden of the Necronotes. From their 21st birthday on for as long as they live the notes start to arrive, and they do not bear good wishes. Each year, the Necros are tasked with the name of a person who must be eliminated. The reasons are never known, and neither is the origin of the directives, but participation is mandatory, or death will be swift. When Soph’s latest victim indicates that they know the origin of the notes, the situation goes from bad to worse. With the arrival of a not unheard of but rare second note, it seems to be a message to stay in his lane, but the assigned target raises even more questions that this Necro does not want to know the answers to. What was supposed to have been a routine trip to dispatch a marked Necro, has turned into an ordeal that threatens to take away all Soph holds dear. When the dust settles, will Soph be able to survive and retire to his quiet home for another year until he is tapped to kill again, or will this be the end of the line?

Necronote is the first installment in the Notes of Necrosoph series by author Al K. Line. Set in a dystopian alternative universe that scarily resembles a worst-case scenario of a post-pandemic Earth, Line takes us into the dark world of the Necro. While magical in nature, they are not “wizards” as each Necro manifests different unique abilities that they use during their daily lives and when executing the yearly notes. Necros attempt to live as normal a life as possible, but sometimes it’s difficult. With drones, the population but with a sharper more critical eye on the Necros I was reminded of “big brother”, but who is behind the notes, drones, and other events is a mystery yet to be revealed. As a longtime fan of this author, I was eager to start this new series, and while it is not like anything Line has imagined previously it is still very familiar in the writing style. While slower in pace than his prior stories, I feel that this really suited the story as we are introduced not only to an entirely new cast of characters but also circumstances. For most of us who have never experienced a life without the luxuries of mass transportation and other items, Soph’s world is as familiar as it is foreign. Despite, or maybe because of the slower pace, Line has created a world that immerses the reader and makes them want a pet dragon. (Or is that just me?) If you are already a fan of Al K. Line or a lover of Urban fantasy Necronote will not disappoint. After this initial introduction, I am diving directly into Dog Days, the soon-to-be-released second book in this series.

I have been a fan of this author for a long time, and I was warned at the beginning that this would be something completely different than he’s written before. Boy, was that right! Soph is the main character, and this book takes place in a sort of futuristic society. It’s not much different than now, but climate change has happened and is happening, and everything is warmer. I have to warn you that this one isn’t nearly as action-packed at the author’s other books. Not that that is a bad thing, as it isn’t, because this is filled with a lot of character growth, setting up the universe, some action, getting to know the main/side characters, and really just an all-around good time. I love that Soph is a stone-cold killer, but he is really a softie to everyone else. Give this unique book a try and don’t go in with any expectations of what you’ve read from this author before; you won’t be disappointed. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Loved It!!

I really enjoyed the start of this new series. It's fairly relatable to the times we're living in right now. I like the family and all the animals they have, and the Necroverse is going to be amazing. This is definitely a departure from his previous books. I totally loved Arthur and his stories. I think Soph, the lead character, is going to be just as good! After all, he can communicate with animals, and he can't be all bad!! Thanks, Al K Line, for more great reading to come!

I really wanted to love this one because the premise was great. I was expecting more action and various creatures along with the promised necro-violence. I struggled with the writing through the two-thirds of the book because it was too casual and too heavy on parental worry but kept going because I wanted to see what will happen. It got better in the last third but following the author's note that it won't be an action-packed series, I don't think this series is for me.

Certainly a "Different" style from Mr Line's normal. In places it feels as if the "we must be green" undercurrent would have me closing the book forever, but the preaching was intermittent and although annoying did fit the narrative. Whether to follow the promised series is in the balance at the moment, Possibly to follow the antics of the Zoo? Not one of his best.

Another brilliant book!

Who knew unicorns were that dumb? Well Soph does, badass killer once a year, family man for the rest. The Necronotes tell him who's next, he's just hoping no one gets a Necronote to wipe him or his family out! ..
Read book for more, this is too awesome!

Not goid

Ok after reading the writers explaining the stories I was ready for something really dark but it was not just a little violence but a lot of preaching on the environment.
