As Gotham’s Fear State comes to a close, a new day dawns on the city…one without Batman. But the Dark Knight’s absence does not mean the city is without heroes. Join James Tynion IV and Riccardo Federici as they bring “Fear State” to its conclusion and introduce a new status quo that will reverberate throughout the DCU for years to come.
Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.
Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.
A nice wrap up to the Fear State storyline. Could have been handled just as well in either Batman or Detective. No need for this one shot, except to tidy things up in a bow.
And so ends quite possibly the most disappointing Batman run of at least the last 20ish years. James Tynion had built up so much goodwill as a Batman writer over the years through his iconic Detective Comics run and stuff like Batman/TMNT, but whatever it was, whether it be the higher-ups at DC restricting what he could do or his heart not being in it, or maybe a bit of both, but his time on the main Batman series was some of the most repetitive and uninspired stories I’ve ever read for the Dark Knight. I feel like I may have to go back and read Tynion’s Detective just to get the taste of this out of my mouth.
PS: And again, just a total head-scratcher that this isn’t included in the main Batman “Fear State” volume.
This should have been the Batman Annual rather than a one shot, but at least it's a decent wrap up with good art. The panels set the tone and help level out the narrative. Setting aside the oddity of Batman just chatting with Crane like it's a lazy Sunday, I do feel like the Fear State and Magistrate crap is finally closed and done. It successfully sets a hopeful vibe for the future of Batman and Detective Comics.
I was so glad the previous run was over, and looking at the first pages of this one with the stunning and dark artworks, I thought we had something, and, not even 10 pages in, we fall back the same dark hole...
