In a world where America and her allies are no more, it is kill or be killed. And Bishop chooses neither.
Fleeing the aftermath of the previous mission in the Middle East, cyborg mercenary, Bishop, finds himself in the jungles of South America, lying low with his son, scraping by to survive. When Bishop discovers skeevy warlord, Felix Guzman, is harboring a more formidable weapon than what he encountered in Syria, he must call on his allies for aid.
This weapon has not only attracted the attention of Guzman and the local military, but the earth’s new rulers, as world superpowers race to build a powerful fleet and establish military prowess in space. And wage war to secure a genetic enhancement code which will grant everlasting life.
Can Bishop set aside his desire to live life on his own terms, or will he give himself to something greater? And perhaps more importantly, will he discover how he fits into the mystery of the ICHO Gene?
4/5 - “No!” is what came out of my mouth halfway through this book.
I like this book a lot. I’m not a sci-fi reader but I read Kevin Alan’s books. I like the worlds he constructs and the characters he creates.
Bishop had a great fatherly redemption type of arc with his son. In the beginning their relationship is shown as clinical, cold, void of relationship. Bishop makes a bad decision that I can only guess is from his lack of interpersonal relationships - he let the wrong brain make decisions. The consequence, Otis is abducted.
The plot of the book is to rescue Otis from his captors. With the help of Hassan, Frye, Yanan, and Wasp, they are able to find Otis but all is not good.
Throughout the story Bishop changes. Learns to accept that his actual emotions are ok. For me it seemed like this arc began when he was held captive with Yanan. She needed reassurance, a person to protect her and not in his standard military protection, she needed touch. From her he learns that there’s more than just functioning on vitamin shakes and weapons.
By the time they get to Otis, Bishop let’s himself feel. He holds his little boy close to him. In his mind it’s to keep the reactor in place but he holds on to him, tightly.
The ending felt like a calm before the next storm. Otis and Bishop are going to stay with Hassan and the team. Bishop learned that he can trust the right people, and Hassan gets her kiss.

The protagonist in our story is a cyborg mercenary by the name of Bishop. He had fought wherever he has been called to serve He has fought in the Middle East and now he is in the jungles of South America. He has retrieved his son and he wants out. He wants to live a quiet life, away from the war, a life in which he can raise his son to be a good man. But that may all be going out the window as he has discovered that a Warlord by the name of Guzman is hiding powerful weapon, a weapon that he first encountered in Syria. He knows he cannot just forget about it and pretend it does not exist. He knows that he must call in the Allies. But if he does his life with his son will be over. Can he give up the life he has made with his son? He has already given up so much for his country and his Allies? What will he do? Either way he will lose everything he desires and has fought so hard to create. This is the first novel that I have read by Kevin Alan and I was very impressed. The novel flowed smoothly, characters were sound and well developed. The story line was well solid. And flows smoothly. This is the second novel is the series. I had not read the first novel, which I recommend, but I was able to read it as a stand alone novel without any problems. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the novel.
A very engrossing read. The good guys aren't all immediately obvious, but the bad ones make themselves unmistakable. Futuristic warfare and practical immortality go hand-in-hand with brutality, rape, betrayal, and sadism. while technology vastly increases, human behavior is not much different in the author's future from the way things are now (or from the way humans have behaved since at least the earliest recorded history).
I would like to see some of the technological advances - and who knows, I just may live long enough. 30 years ago, Hollywood's visions of Star Trek had laser pistols and particle weapons ... fiction then, but reality now. Science fiction authors dream things up and then military engineers and inventors (like those in DARPA) try to make the most usable ideas into reality.
AUXILIARY was at hand, as needed. World full of conflict, quick decisions.
With that being clear, now proceed. You'll meet an array, of characters.
The enemy at hand, keeps changing. It is the time, to defend.
Story keeps us on, our toes. Drama has us holding, our breath.

A great continuation on Bishop's development, it is apparent that he is unaware of all his abilities. It's one of those compelling reads that follows along the moral lines of the Magnificent Seven but with the sci-fi elements of the Terminator mixed in. Lots of twists and ongoing character development in this one and there is still more to come. Can hardly wait.
Bishop is a one man army. All he wants to do it take care of his son and all is well until his son is kidnapped and whoever did it will regret it. But Bishop has help but even with the ICHO virus in him, it may not be enough to take on the forces against him and his friends but time is not on their side.
