Will this be the end of my war with Steven Pine? Or just the end of me?

Psychic Liam Baker and his boyfriend Detective Kimball Thompson have battled the murderous and terrifyingly powerful psychic, Steven Pine twice now. Both men would love to put that chapter to rest. Unfortunately, when Steven manages to escape police custody, he immediately goes to work murdering innocents. It seems Steven’s happiest when taunting Liam with the spirits of his prey.

Thompson and Liam follow the trail of victims, well aware that Steven is setting a dangerous trap for them. What Thompson doesn’t realize is that Liam has decided that there will be no fourth battle with Steven.

Even if Liam has to personally escort Steven Pine to Hell.

I loved re-visiting with Liam and Thompson again and I hope this isn't the last we see of them.
This was a twisty, action-packed thriller with a villain you love to hate. I'm happy to see Liam more settled with Thompson and the two of them working toward a future.
More, please!

Sadly, this one was the book that I less liked in the series.

In part, it was because we already know these characters, so it gets tiresome when Liam keeps telling us that they are this way or another. And I didn't like the whole particularly when it's never confirmed. And seriously, pretty soon it was really obvious that this was the 'motive', so I was disappointed that Liam didn't catch it. Although, okay, nobody wants to believe that :P

Oh, well, it's still an entertaining read.

4.5 Stars!

Thompson and Liam are as in love as ever, but they're still working on some issues that affect their relationship, especially in relation to Thompson's ex, Alexander, who seems determined in finding ways to talk himself back into Kimball's life, and the fact that Steven Pine has managed to escape from prison.

I love Thompson and Liam together, I love their dynamics, both in their personal life and as colleagues, they just complement each other.

The procedural portion was top-notch as always and the case(s) and how intertwined they were, kept my interest throughout the book. I really liked Barker and I hope this isn't the last we've seen of him. On the other hand, Steven Pine was as insane as always and it was great having my suspicions sort of confirmed regarding him.

All in all, another great addition to the series. Fast-paced, interesting, and mind-blowing, the series just keeps getting better with each new installment. Very recommendable!

This is a well written book with strong characters in Thompson and Liam. The author does a great job building the mystery and pulled me in with the intriguing storyline. I was glued to the pages right to the end with all the twists. The scenes are painted perfectly and the story flows fluidly. I loved and would recommend this book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

This book definitely redeemed itself from it's predecessor lol. In fact I really enjoyed this one. The miscommunication issue didn't appear again, which definitely made me very happy. I did feel there were a few things that were left unresolved or unexplained, but I hold out hope that this might have been intentional and there's another installment in the works *grin*

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. It's the fourth book in the series and hopefully not the last one as Liam and Thompson are quite a pair. Not just in private but on the force as well, solving cases that ultimately lead to the same villain.

I really enjoyed Shadow's End, which is book 4 in the Psychic Detective Mysteries. It is very well written and the two main characters, Liam and Thompson, are brilliant. The are the perfect team, both at work and in their private lives. The story is great but I am wondering if this is really the end of Liam's arch-nemesis? I can also see possible storylines with some of the other characters as well, but that is just my own personal opinion.
I have no problem at all recommending both this book and the series. Please note, this is not a standalone as the books must be read in order.
I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Psychic Detective Mysteries . . .

Psychic Liam Baker and Detective Kimball Thompson have battled the powerful psychic Steven Pine several times now. Unfortunately, Steven escapes police custody and he is back to murdering innocents.

Although Liam and Thompson are in pursuit and ready for yet another encounter, Liam has determined that even though they know there is a trap set for them, he will make sure this battle is the last one, even if he himself does not survive.

These characters are wonderful together, and I hope we get to see more of them in the future. The writing is really good and easily holds the reader’s attention. Will both Liam and Thompson come out of this alive?

Rating (All ratings use a Scale of 1-5) =
This review will be very similar to the ones for book #2 and #3.

I don't always write reviews for 4 star reviews; +/- one star means a high majority would find it at least an average read.

Like the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd books, this was a 3.5 star read for me; that was easily bumped up to 4 stars for the engagement / entertainment value. But, there were some things that deserve a mention for anyone deciding on whether or not to read it.

Blurb = 3 stars, unlike the first one, I did not feel anything was missing from this blurb.

My Genre Scale = 4

Odds if not your genre = 2, though good, there is nothing that really lifts it above the genre intended.

Development of: = Rating this area is tricky for this book. Basically, the development was just enough it never effected the flow for me.
*World = 2.5 not given a lot about psychics in this world at all - types, origins, roles, or how viewed or handled in the world at large.
*Characters = 3 stars, there is some growth for both characters and as a couple.
*Plot = 3. 5 stars: this was solid. Nothing vital left out, and it was engaging for this type of story. But, it was the bare bones minimum needed. For those that need more details and explanations, this might not be the story for you.

What stood out (taking in consideration I've completed over 2000 m/m books) = Nothing

Mood Type : Appeal to those looking for... (and /or those who should avoid)
This is not what I would describe as a mystery. It's more like how was it done not who. I also feel there was a little less emphasis on the relationship side of the story intertwined with more capture the criminal. There is sex, but it is not the focus. It flows well, questions are answered, and relationship progresses. More entertainment than a mind puzzle to read. It is not for a die hard mystery reader or a picky reader who reads everything with a critical eye.

Warnings = None

HFN/HEA = A definite HFN

Series Notes = This is the 4th of 4 as of May 2022
*Reading on? N/A, but would
*Reading back to back? Yes
*Can be easily read without the previous? This is definitely more of a continuation than a stand alone. There is enough background given, a laid back reader might not feel lost but a ton of context and texture would be missing.

Rating Notes = (SubPlots, thoughts, etc... )
There was a nice wrap up in this story for our m/c's. I covered pretty much all my thoughts in the above. I was pleasantly surprised by how deeply engaged I stayed. I am an avid watcher of the % complete on my Kindle even when enjoying a book. I rarely checked while reading this one, which was also true for the first 3. It's nice to be surprised. For a laid back reader that enjoys this genre, I would definitely recommend it.

***************
Below is my philosophy on reviewing!
***************
1. I try to take into account and note common pet peeves noted by other readers
2. "Brain candy' does not necessarily carry a negative connotation. (What is brain candy? Publishing industry 's version of pop music - Typically: formulaic, from a prolific author published often and quickly (like monthly), things escalate fast, and are often solved easily etc..) It has its uses: to pass time when tired, on the beach, etc... The problem comes when "brain candy" is unexpected or even disguised.
3. Why rate the blurbs? :
Like many readers, I do not like to think I'm reading one kind of story; just to end up with another. But...I also don't think a book should be docked stars for being as stated. If I don't like stories about "_________", and I choose to read it; I shouldn't give it 2 stars based JUST on my preferences. Unless... it wasn't clear in the blurb.
4. Other Factors that effect my perspective when reviewing:
Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. I read at least 100+ books a year - with an average length of 220± pages. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2022) was a 3.60 average for 1715 books. Which considering, one should be better at picking out books the more one reads, I feel is an accurate average. I have over 800 reviews within the m/m genre here on Goodreads.
5. I'm really confused by reviews that consist of just 2 to 3 sentences - with no explanation or evidence. I'm even more baffled when it receives "likes". I'm unsure of how it is useful to others on whether or not to pick a book, for example: "It was a fun read". Umm okay... What made it fun? For that matter, what do you define as fun? Do not even get me started on people who have rated over a 1000 books with a 4.99 rating average. How is that helpful? And there's is absolutely no way that every book is above average great / 5 star read. Why even bother to rate books?
6. I am not a writer nor a wordsmith, but I am a passionate reader. I joined the m/m group years ago, but I mostly lurk. I like to ask questions, debate, and quite possibly play Devil's advocate - which is hard to do online, with unknown people - to whom you are also an unknown- and no body language is available to convey intent. Plus, true debates seems to be a lost art form where respect and even friendliness can be shown between those with fundamentally different opinions.

DNF @ 28%

The first 2 books of this series were great. The 3rd book went left REAL QUICK and exposed all the flaws of Liam, Thompson, and their relationship. The worst part is that everyone, including the author, I swear, kept putting the onus on Liam for his "overreacting." It. Was. Not. Overreacting.

Onto this book. We have all the flaws exposed in the previous book plus the ones in this:
- Denial of both characters of the circumstances they're in, like believing they're totally safe from Pine, though he's proven MORE THAN ONCE that he can attack them from prison.
- Thompson is the toxic and insecure one, but Liam is convinced he, himself, is. I'm 100% certain nothing about Thompson's toxicity will be addressed in a way that will fix anything.
- Liam's powers and his control of them are absolute SHIT. And not in a scrappy "He's trying his best," way, but a "He sucks at this and even strangers on the street know it, which puts him and everyone around him in danger, but he won't do anything to improve because ~reasons," way.
- There are WAY TOO MANY psychics that pop up in this series, and every one is either more powerful, more intelligent, or more self-preserving than Liam.

Like, at this point, why should I even care about Liam? I've decided to cut my losses and move on to greener pastures.

Christine, I'm SO SORRY I kept trying to recommend this series to you. T_T

This was a sweet end to a series I loved. (It reminds me of the Pandora Pine psychic series without all the characters being added every book and everyone being perfect.) The mysteries all come together well. There’s a big finale that’s just the right length and with the right amount of action and suspense. We finally find out why Steven has been so obsessed with Liam.

And of course, Liam and Thompson’s love is declared over and over in a way I appreciate. There’s no growling or power plays or over protection. They respect and love each other. The sex was fairly short and light and I felt the love rather than the lust. I liked it.

I loved the main characters. I like that they didn’t judge a woman for staying with her cheating husband. She had lots of reasons and they respected that. Most of the supporting characters had depth—they weren’t all good or all bad. They were complex. But all the security guards, doctors, and all the key players other than victims and one bad guy were female. It was frustrating.

I wish there were a sequel because I would definitely read it. I’ll continue to read work by this author.

The reader, Kale Williams, is wonderful. (I had kind of a crush on him for a while.) His voices are varied and distinct and I like his intonation. He does sex scenes really well, too.

I usually only rate 1 stars when I DNF a book but I truly, truly disliked this one. The writing is amateurish at best, it tells rather than shows in a sort of clinical way (first we went and did this, then someone thought that, then we did something else). Liam's powers do not help in this sense - he constantly and detachedly describes what people are like and what they're thinking in lieu of actual character development. It gets boring and it gets boring fast.

The story is thin. Very thin. The mystery is predictable and Liam and Thompson are, as usual, actual rubbish at investigating. Thompson, a supposed hardened detective with years on the force, talks about "going to the scene to look for clues". Not evidence. Clues. On that note, Thompson is extremely unlikable. He continues to tell Liam he loves him while at the same time treating him like shit, basically a convenient help and body. Their relationship has so little chemistry I still struggle to see what they see in each other 4 books in. Liam was treated with more humanity by Terrance than Thompson.

Finally, having your MC referring to a woman as an "attention whore" is despicable to me. This is not a villain, this is the guy who we're supposed to be rooting for.

Even though Thompson and Liam are still madly in love, they're trying to work through some issues that are interfering with their relationship, such as Alexander, Thompson's ex-boyfriend, who is determined to talk his way back into Kimball's life, and Steven Pine's recent jailbreak.

In both their personal and professional lives, Thompson and Liam are just perfect for each other.

My favorite part of the book was the procedural aspect, but the cases themselves and how intricately they were intertwined kept me engaged all the way through. Barker was a great character, and I hope we get to see more of him in the future. Steven Pine, on the other hand, was as insane as ever, which was great confirmation of my suspicions about him.

Great addition to the series, all in all. The series keeps getting better and better with each new episode. It's highly recommended!.

At 28%, I'm going to start skimming, because this could've used a line edit for several habits many readers won't notice, but I do.
At 48% in an hour; skimming is my friend. Dropping a dead guy's name into references to a waiter was startling, author. For serious, Line Edit plz.
At 58%, past a stupid conflict. Ugh.
At 68%, the most unsubtle, counterproductive witness confrontation IN HISTORY.
At 78%, I skimmed a lot. These characters are inconsistent and repetitive, but at least the next chapter starts interestingly.
At 81%, stupid character action. Stupid.
At 85%, change in pov for the first time in this novel.
At 99%, I skimmed to the end and was... Meh.

As you can probably tell, I'm unimpressed with this final? book in the series and possibly with the author, sadly. Very disappointed.

Shadow's End is an exhilarating read!

Detective Kimball Thompson and Psychic Liam Baker are strong characters in this series and compliment each other brillantly. The addition of Barker's character worked great as Liam's nemesis, Steven Price (crazy psychic psycho dude) in on the loose and coming for Liam. Liam is going to need all the help he can get if he has any intentions of surviving.

The story will keep you interested and intrigued from the first page all the way to the end. Mystery, romance, action, suspense, it's all in there and well put together to make the story flow nicely, what more can you ask for. Love the book and would not hesitate to recommend this wonderful series.

I've received an ARC of this book and voluntarily leave my honest review.

Oh, my! Psychic, Liam has decided to draw the line. Steven likes to taunt Liam and Det Thompson with his murders of innocent people. The murdered, give their opinions about being dead and other things. The author, did an excellent job drawing the reader in and getting us engaged and involved in the pursuit of justice and the lives of our heroes. Will Liam and Thompson, catch Steve? Will they silence the taunts? Will Liam and Thompson, survive? Will they find out, why? Excellent flow. Great character construction. I LOVED the mystery, the intrigue, the dogged investigation, the romance and the strength of Liam and Thompson. I need to go read the previous stories, S.C. is that good. Well done! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. There was a few unexpected twists as Thompson and Liam investigate a murder then Steven Pine escapes. He starts killing again. The first murder victim's sister helps Liam with a necklace and an offer to help develop his gifts. Some of the reasons for Steven's obsession with Liam come to light but whether all can be believed is unknown. The murderers are caught and so is Steven after a confrontation with Liam. The help from Barker was what was needed. The other surprises in who helped Steven just made the story richer.

Not bad

A little bit predictable but still enjoyable to read.
If there are more books about this couple I'll definitely read.
The thing that bothered me the most was a sudden jump to Thompson' POV for a chapter. I absolutely hate POV jumps so I'm happy that it was at least for just one chapter. In this story though, it felt completely unnecessary and I think it was cool to not really know what Thompson was thinking - just like Liam can't read him - but after that chapter some mystery is off, and I don't get how it helped the plot in any way, if anything I think it kind of spoiled some of the tension.

Liam and Thompson encounter Steven Pine again and the story is told almost completely from Liam's POV. After interacting with some of the recently dead, where they provide hints as to Steven's motive for targeting Liam, the guys follow a convoluted trail where we, hopefully, see the end of Steven. It will be interesting to see where the author takes the series from here. I, personally, would like to see more of a couple of the new secondary characters in future books.

The ARC I received in exchange for a review still had a few proofreading errors, but nothing too bad.

Shadow's End is the 4th book in the Psychic Detective Mysteries series. I am a big fan of this series and couldn't wait to read this book. I was not disappointed!
Liam and Thompson are once again trying to stop Steven Pine from his murderous path of destruction. They are caught in his evil world and must defeat him once and for all.
The mystery and storyline kept me glued to the pages as the story unfolded.
S.C. Wynne paints quite the picture here and I was caught up in this world she has created.

Fourth in the Psychic Detective Mysteries series and I hope not the last.

Stephen Pine is on the loose again and apart from his trademark trail of dead bodies he's got another possible surprise for Liam. I admit that I suspected what was coming quite early on but I was still riveted and read this book in one sitting.

A great progression in the story arc but I'm not convinced Stephen Pine is done with Liam yet.

That was an exciting read!

Wow, I found myself riveted to this story. I'm enjoying the evolution of Liam and Thompson's relationship. They are strong together, and look out for each other.

And Steven Pine is one scary villain!

So, if you like stories that are told from a single POV (there is one brief chapter from Thompson's POV), and love a good psychic mystery to solve, this book is for you.

I’m gonna leave these last two books unrated since I didn’t necessarily enjoy the series, I just wanted to finish it for the sake of completion. But I am genuinely fascinated by the author’s inability to write a real twist into a book. It’s always obvious who the killer is and even the reason Pine is going after Liam is obvious when we get the first clue. There’s no real tension. The tension comes from the romance which I neither liked or disliked.

What an exceptional book. Liam and Thompson are fantastic together and bring a little extra to the story. Barker is such amazing character to introduce in the story. I believe to get a good feel on the characters in the story you need to read this series in order.

Thompson and Liam are determined to stick at their relationship despite their own insecurities. Meanwhile the bodies continue to pile up. The big question is 'How is Pine killing people from inside prison?" or is he? What a twist to a macabre tale... I so love Liam - he is so very socially inadequate and has more insecurities than a sinking ship, but it seems to make him more lovable somehow. Book 3 here I come...

As usual, I enjoyed Kale Williams narration. The story has some interesting twists and turns which is why I continue to read/listen to the series.

After four books, I am still wondering about things in Liam's past that include his family and his deceased partner. This book tosses out a few tidbits, but there is obviously still more to be resolved.
