Rys is still shaking dust from his hair after a thousand years of sleep, and he already finds himself in a two-front war. The sorcerers of the Malus League are summoning a demon lord, while his northern neighbor marches south. Now that Rys has claimed a kingdom, he needs to keep it.
Naturally, he'll expand his territory while crushing his new enemies.
Behind the scenes, the many spy networks of his opponents wage a continuous war. Rys gets his hands on his own spymaster, a pliable and energetic fox who is desperate to prove herself. The other nations want to manipulate him to their own end.
But he is nobody's puppet. When it's all over, he will stand atop the archipelago as its greatest power.
I can imagine many veteran readers, like myself, would look down on this genre.. the harem genre. Most especially, many would think, as I once did, that other than titillation the genre could absolutely hold no other merit.
This writer and this series is just one example of how wrong I was!
I have, over the past 3-4 years, read quite a few authors and series in the genre. I will say at the outset the genre is not for children or the squeamish. However, that IS NOT to say writers who pursue the genre are without talent. I very much think of the genre as romances for (grown) men. Entertainment is their purpose, and entertaining they are!
So this is one of the complicated ones. I do not like this book and will not be continuing with the series.
The issue with the first one, was an overly complex set up that was incredibly boring for the first half. I hoped a second book would have more meat to it. While there is a definite improvement, it read like an economics synopsis. The transitions are too harsh, and it spends far too long setting up the ending rather than letting anything interesting happen. For me this is a one star due to content and style, but the story and writing is sufficient for a four star if you enjoyed the first one. If the first one was dense and dry, don't waste your time on this one. If you enjoyed the complexity of the first one, jump right in. You'll love this one.
4.5 again. This too seems like it could use some editing for brevity. The story explores the concepts of evil vs. pragmatism which I often find interesting.
The "banality of evil" is a well-known concept, but evil to me requires intent to cause harm for shits & giggles or the pursuit of an aim with no concern for those who will suffer for it. Examples respectively are psychopaths and any kind of genocide/pogrom/crusade/jihad.
The idea of the Angels not being "good" isn't a new one, and even taking the original (Old Testament) source material they were not altruistic beings by any stretch. Likewise the concept that demons/devils are not inherently evil is one I've seen explored before. Use of power is therefore only as "good" or "evil" as the lengths the individual will go to and the methods they use.
It is indeed impossible to make an omelet without breaking any eggs, but one does not need to smash the entire carton nor kill the chickens to do so. The degree of disregard for the powerless/people affected by your actions seems to be the determining factor in how "evil" the pragmatic actions you take are.
I found this a disappointing and incongruous sequel to the first book. The story quickly bogs down with too much philosophizing on moral relativism and the nature of evil, haphazardly slams in juvenile harem clichés, gives us confusing perspectives on Rys' power level and mastery of magic, has some of the worst female characters introduced in this book and all the relationships and interactions feel awkward and inconsistent. I can't even figure out what Mina is supposed to be; nothing about her makes sense to me.
I will grant it that if Rys is this universe's standard for an Incubus King then the high level of sexual frustration at least makes sense.
I'm just mad because I really enjoy this author's Heretic Spellblade series and the first book in this series struck me as obviously coming from that same well. I was onboard with the complex and ambitious settings and this book just feels like a bait and switch.
DNF at 45% I set this book aside with every intention of picking it back up in a few days. That was a month ago and I have less desire to finish now than when I put it down. Additionally I can't remember anything from this book apart from the basic premise. Not the name of the main character, or what happens in the first 45% (basically half) of this book. -That's not to say the writing is bad. While reading this book nothing worse happened than I lost interest and wandered off. This has been my experience with ALL K.D. Robertson books. They read just fine and then 10 minutes after I finish I can't remember a word I've read. So I'm cutting out the middle man and just not reading them. I might take another stab at Heretic Spellblade if my "to be read" pile gets short enough.
I think the author is talented and the broad plot is very interesting. However, he gets too tactical with the conversations between Rys and the females and gets boring pretty quickly. He is an omnipotent guy yet he waits for women to desire for him, spends days to solve their mundane issues, etc... Yeah, sure. The books turns into a romance novel very quickly; Rys becoming an ideal lover every woman dreams of.
Sex scenes are written really bad, unfortunately author's talent to write good fantasy falls way short in this front. Repetitive words ( Fat ropes ?), unimaginative acts etc. etc. It would be much better if this was a just a fantasy book without erotism
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Not sure what to say, it just continues. This isn't a series of stories, it's one story in N volumes, with a definite shape to it. In this book we get more of the world, more of the mystery of how the character appeared where he did when he did, more of the backstory of the ancient infernal empire. But it's not formulaic or repetitive, it's all moving towards some completion.
The sex scenes... I can't say they do all that much for me. On the other hand, the female characters are very good, particularly in this volume. So even if it is not particularly to my taste as erotica, the relationships are among the strengths of the book.
Closer to 3.5 stars. The fact that most of the side characters want to jump in the sack immediately with almost no work seems... silly. The editing error is a loss of a star. That being said it's still a decent story, with a lot of moving parts. The MC you never feel he's in danger, but there are others that you might worry will come to harm. Smut is... honestly at risk of becoming stale, but it's sprinkled in and doesn't detract from the story so that's nice. I'll definitely read the next book though, hopefully it improves
2.5 stars honestly there is just so much tell and no show in this series that I am done with it. The MC is suppose to be this amazing Magician from ancient times that is OP but all he ever does is hurls a fireball or Swings his burning axe and everyone around him has to save him. His biggest strength is he can summon strong demons that all believe he is like The most badass Demon Lord ever. Even though he is so mediocre it's almost as if the author has no clue how to write a powerful character.
This is a great sequel and it’s arguably better than the first!! We finally get the beginnings of war. Character expansion, world building galore, More of the Labyrinth, etc. the secondary characters get fleshed out and as much as we get more info about who Rhys is and the Infernal Empire that collapsed I still want more! Can’t wait for book 3
The first book is good but much like most first books it has a lot of work to do to create the world and characters making it sometimes hard to be interesting. This book is many times better then the first despite me already liking the first.
Some amazing world building!!! Action, cool magic and amazing adventure!!!! The character interaction is first rate and the adult fantasy activities are as enjoyable as we expect from this author!!! A definite must read!!!!
The depth of the characters and their inner feelings come to life in this series.Action, plot twists and villains that live up to the term villains. This series is excellent.
This book is awesomely written, fully immerse yourself In the enigma that is rys, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys magic, war and beast!!
A perfect mix of political machinations, action packed battles and smoldering sexy times, book two got it all with banter and humor that had me smile and laugh out loud a few times. Good thing book 3 is out
I enjoyed reading this book. It was highly entertaining. The story and characters were interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. This book is definitely worth reading.
This series is good, just not my cup of tea. The emphasis in the series is on kingdom building more than anything else. Although the introduction, at the end this book, of characters the MC has been actively avoiding does make me curious about book three.
Honestly I enjoyed this, but it was kinda bland and boring. Didn’t really grab me, and then the ending was such an obvious ploy. So on the balance it was ok, definitely reading the next in the series but hoping for more.
This series is excellent!!! Made me laugh a bunch of times. Great characters and and the back and forth between them is really entertaining. Can’t wait for the next book
This is a good book. You shouldy read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. The book is a good read. i enjoyed it alot.. Download or buy it today. why not?
Really enjoying the series! Someone trying to regain lost power and continuously looking to gather stronger people around them. Looking forward to more !
I have to say, the synopsis makes it sound more exciting than it is. Rys spends most of his time walking around slowly, making portentous speeches and waggling his eyebrows at the ladies. It's not bad but I expected better.
