At this point in my life, the only thing I believe in astrology and I have zero shame about it (very Scorpio of me). This was the perfect book for anyone getting into astrology, it describes all of the basics to understand yourself and those closest to you! Thank you to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this arc ebook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Thanks to Netgalley for an audiobook copy! I'm leaving a review voluntarily and this little book comes out in a couple weeks!
There are haters in the reviewers like "I don't believe in this" - do you read Bigfoot or ghost books as well when you don't believe, or are you deliberately trolling?
Fours stars from an earnest reader.
Anyways, this was a quirky little introduction to some basic astro knowledge I was lacking myself, after years of listening to better-informed friends who have done deep dive studying on the topic. It was admittedly a choppy format to do as an audiobook ARC on the Netgalley app - there's like no way to navigate to the specific signs you might be listening for.
Still, the narrator's voice was pleasant, the Dad Jokes weren't too unbearable as the topic transitioned, and I feel like I genuinely learned some things. I had never delved into Venus, Mars etc. rulings, so it was a solid foundation of knowledge. Odd things like my Saturn sign suddenly made a lot of sense, given my personality.
I say take this at face value - don't read if you don't believe in it, and otherwise it's a helpful starter book. I didn't realize it's tied into an app, which I might try now. Cute cover and title, too.
Full disclosure: I don't really believe in astrology and am not a follower. That's one reason I requested this book though, because it promised to show me why two people born on the same day (like two of my husband's friends who could not be more different) may have wildly different personalities. I am always happy to have a good book change my mind about something. I also never understood what on earth Mercury in retrograde meant and I'm all for the fun in any book that promises to tell me all about myself just because it's always sort of entertaining to see how right they are.
First off, I still don't understand a bit of why George and Nick are both Leos born on August 1st and absolutely nothing alike. I guess you're supposed to go on the internet and plug in your birth date and location to find out detailed astrology for yourself, but what good is the book then? It also goes into a ton of information about what it means if each of your "planets" (the sun and moon are planets here too) are in each sign. I had no idea what any of this meant. I'm a Capricorn. I guess that's my sun sign? I have no idea what my Venus and moon and so on signs are. How do I find that out? There are pages and pages of what each one means but I was utterly lost and honestly I'm not going to do extra research on the internet to read a book, especially about a topic I don't really believe in.
There's colorful artwork, and it seems to give you a fair amount of information about each of the signs in each planet, if that's what you're looking for. This will be a fine book for beginners who are believers. Intermediate and advanced learners may not find a lot of in depth information, and skeptics will probably not come away convinced of anything. Two stars for "it was okay" but I honestly was pretty bored by it.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book via Net Galley.
I have the app to Sanctuary as well as viewing it on Instagram. I love it. I liked this book but where I think it failed is on this audiobook platform for Netgalley. The book is made so that you can skip around and select what sign/planet that corresponds with you, but with this app you can't do that. Selecting a chapter is difficult to say the least. I did like the book was enjoyed the narration.
This is a great little book, which is an introduction to basic astrology. I found it fascinating, and I was engrossed in it throughout. The audiobook narrator was lovely, and I liked her voice, which sounded uplifting and happy. The information in the book is suitable for beginners, or as a refresher for more experienced astrology students. The information was set out in an ordered way, which was great to listen to, and I found it all very fun and relaxing. Although I learned a lot from the book, it didn't feel like I was studying, since the book was so easy to listen to. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in star signs, planets and the basics of astrology.
Many thanks to the author, narrator, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
You don’t have to be famous to dance with the stars—you just need a healthy dose of cosmic curiosity.
So, I am one of these people who has a healthy dose of cosmic curiosity. Ever since I was a teenager, and realised that the moon definitely had control over my moods, I have read various books learning more about my star sign and what traits it determined in my life and personality.
I was a bit sceptical about this book at first with it being in audio version, a hard copy of the book would be really good so you could study your own sign in more details or skip through the chapters you are more interested in. The narrator did mention the audio came with a PDF but there wasn't one downloadable from Netgalley. She was really enjoyable to listen to, and made the facts interesting and fun, rather than boring. That being said, this works really well and the Sanctuary app that you can download alongside it helps you understand in more details and shows you your birth chart and gives more information about your star and for free and even speak to astrolgers if you desire.
This book guides beginners and enthusiasts alike through the signs, planets, and basics of astrology, helping you understand why not every Leo is the same. It is very information and I think a printer copy would be a great addition to anyones collection on the subject.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a good introduction to astrology, and expands on more than just your sun sign (though of course that is in there as well) . While the audiobook is good, I think a hard copy of this book will be better for most people, so they can treat it more as a reference book. While not a long book, you will definitely want to highlight, underline, or come back to certain sections as you expand your knowledge on Astrology.
This is a great addition to your spiritual shelf in your home library. It would also make a great birthday gift for any friends and family members who are interested in astrology and birth charts.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my advanced copy in exchange for a review.
I enjoy the Sanctuary memes especially the colorful infographics they create and this book includes a handful of these which are entertaining and helpful for learning key concepts. This book could definitely appeal to Astro newbies but the content felt a bit better suited for their app than a reference book as the memes, jokes and slang felt like they could get outdated pretty quickly.
This is a basic guide to astrology and is meant for beginners. It mainly covers the concept of a birth chart, the information needed to develop one, and the basics of how to interpret it, with a particular emphasis on Sun, Moon, and Ascending signs. There’s also a guide for each of the 12 signs and the characteristics they embody.
Okay, truth be told, I’ve never really been into astrology. I mean, I knew I was an Aquarius, but I didn’t really even know what that meant. When I stumbled across this book, I decided to try it just out of curiosity. The level of knowledge was perfect for someone like me who had only a vague understanding of what astrology is. I found the book interesting and easy to follow.
The audiobook is narrated by Jorjeana Marie. She did a great job keeping the book light and engaging while also providing a lot of information.
The ebook includes lots of helpful charts and graphics as well as fun stuff like bingo cards for each sign.
If you’re curious about the general idea of astrology and how it works, this is a great introduction.
This is simultaneously approachable and a giant advert for the sanctuary app. Really not the best on audio. More of a flip through book. Does come with helpful PDF.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley.
The most complete and enjoyable astrology book I've ever read. The illustrations are simply charming and beautiful to look at. If you're new to astrology and want to find out more about it, this is the best way to start. It not only has complete information, as it explains the basics very well. Rating: 5/5 stars.
‘What’s Your Sign?’ Is a great introductory read into personal Astrology. It lays out all the foundational knowledge required when you start to explore your birth chart. There are also lots of easy-to-read charts and pictures explaining the basics such as Houses, Planets, the correlating astrological signs and the attributes belonging to each one. Looking for a more in-depth read? You may need to look elsewhere – but this is an easy read, especially for someone just starting out. Thank you to NetGalley for providing this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This book is beautiful! I already had some astrological knowledge under my belt, but this book’s approach was fun and simple to understand. I would highly recommend this book for anyone new to astrology, or anyone who simply wants a beautiful book for their shelves!
I read this book voluntarily and reviewed an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone. ✨
I am reviewing this audiobook after receiving a complimentary ALC from Libro.fm
What's Your Sign? presents itself as "a guide to astrology for the cosmically curious," but fails to deliver more than a brief overview of the zodiac - barely enough to sate my curiosity. There's a point when, while discussing the "houses" terminology and the fact that most - but not all - modern astrologers utilize a method named for an Italian mathematician who did not, in fact, invent the method, the authors write, "We could go on a whole tangent about why it was named for a guy who didn't invent it, but you're not interested in that." Excuse me, I most certain AM interested in that topic. I think you could have dedicated at the very LEAST a sidebar to whats-his-name (I didn't write it down because I was listening while driving, but you know what? I would have remembered it if they had used it more than once or twice). Anyway, there's nothing new here. I'm not an expert in astrology by any stretch of the imagination, but most of this was information I already knew as a person who is aware of astrology but not particularly invested in it.
Worth noting here is that I believe Sanctuary Astrology is targeting a very small audience - the sliver of the population who are interested in astrology due to Instagram and Twitter, who are also going to read (or listen to) a book about it. The language used throughout is an example of what I like to call Internet Register - rather than the formal register most nonfiction uses, you've got slang, acronyms (everything is ____ AF), and online lingo. It's not trying to be accessible to anyone beyond the Twitter- and Instagram-spheres in which the Sanctuary app was born.
Whether the narrator's vocal fry contributed to the impression that this was a book written by a computer program attempting to mimic the "stereotypical Millennial" or whether that was built into the text as written, I couldn't say. I didn't feel like I connected with this book at all, despite being a Millennial who exists on Twitter and Instagram and gets a non-zero amount of entertainment out of reading horoscopes and astrology memes. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a fan of the app and looking for a blog-ish overview of contemporary astrology with no time spent on history or social context.
Prior to reading this book I loved the idea of astrology, but knew little about it. After reading this book, I love the idea of astrology and know a little something about. What's Your Sign? went into more detail than I anticipated in explaining the influence of different planets, houses, signs, etc. Am I an expert at astrology after reading this book? No. Do I actually understand what it means when people say Mercury is in retrograde? Kind of, certainly better than I did before reading. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this book, but it definitely had some drawbacks for me.
Pros: This book was packed full of information that you did not need much background knowledge to access. While it probably would have been helpful to know at least a little bit about astrology going in, this book introduced concepts at a relatively basic level before expanding and giving more detail. Once it gave more detail it really gave detail certainly surpassing what I anticipated, but I found the information enjoyable and can confidently say that I learned something from this book.
Cons: Listening to the audiobook of this was not the ideal format for me to engage with this content. I ended up downloading the Sanctuary app so that I could follow along with what was being discussed and if I had been working from the audiobook alone I would have found this to be an incredibly challenging book. There were moments when a Bingo board would be read out or a visual described and I wished I had a physical text in front of me. While having a ton of information was a positive at times it also felt overwhelming and navigating through an audiobook to revisit information is much more difficult for me personally than an actual text.
CW: Gendered talk about the planets, Placidus house system
Can I say how much I love astrology? As some of you have probably realized by now, I pick up hobbies and fall in love with them or grow bored with them. Astrology is one of those things I decided last year to dive into when I found a GIANT book at a local metaphysical store. Now, I haven't read that book (yet), but I've been deep-diving into some smaller books. So when I saw What's Your Sign up on Netgalley as an audiobook, I knew I needed to buy the book. My lovely cousin recommended the Sanctuary app when I was in Utah visiting family, so when I saw that the minds behind the Sanctuary App wrote this book, I jumped at the chance to read it.
What's Your Sign is one of those astrology books that I would recommend to anyone that wants to get a basic yet still in-depth rundown on astrology. This book walks you through the planets, the houses, transits, and the signs. In addition, this book broke down the more complex concepts and explained them in a way that I could understand.
The audiobook's narration was pretty good, but I will say, I think you should buy the physical/digital book instead or in addition. I found myself wanting to highlight sections, take notes, and refer to past sections, which is hard to do when reading an audiobook.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book. I know the Scorpio section was pretty dead-on when it came to me and the Virgo Moon & Cancer Rising section was also pretty accurate. So if you're interested in astrology, this might be the perfect book for you!
Astrology is a topic that has always intrigued me. I read my horoscope from time to time for fun. Do I follow it religiously? No. But I believe that it can help you learn more about yourself and others. So I want to digger deeper and learn more about astrology.
I read What’s Your Sign?: A Guide to Astrology for the Cosmically Curious as an ebook. But I believe that certain books are better consumed physically. There is just something in how you can hold it in your hands and flip through them as you please. This is one of those cases.
The concept of What’s Your Sign?: A Guide to Astrology for the Cosmically Curious is meant to read any part you want. You do not have to read it cover to cover unless you want to.
You are given the basics of astrology, which is beginner-friendly. The charts are a nice touch. In addition, it is written in a way that is not difficult to understand.
My only gripe with it is that it is one big walking advertisement for the Sanctuary app. Which I mean is understandable, since it is written by those people. I expected that there would be advisements every once in a while. But it was a lot. It seems that it was pushing you to use that app. Which again, I get. But there is a line between sprinkling it in there where people won’t even realize and blatantly obvious. If you can learn everything from the book in the app, what is the point of spending money on the book itself? It would be more worth it if What’s Your Sign?: A Guide to Astrology for the Cosmically Curious had something new that’s not in the app and can supplement one another. The upside is, at least everything is all in one place.
Thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Audio for the ALC of this audiobook.
What *is* your sign, though? I knew I was a Gemini, but I had no idea about my moon sign, rising sign, and what the ruling planets of my various houses meant. Shoutout to this short, concise book that explains the basics of your star chart and has an app that can help you understand these things, provide solid horoscopes, and connects you with qualified astrologers to learn more.
There are several ways to use this book. You can go straight through the introduction, breakdown of what everything means, and more info about each sign. You can skip straight to your sign and only listen to that, or you can jump around as different things interest you to learn more about each part.
I also downloaded the app, and they are still developing it, but the basics are there for more understanding, and that helped me as the book explained each part and what it meant. I already have a better handle on my chart than I ever did before, and this book was a great jumping off point to dig even deeper. I recommend it for the compelte novice and or the casually interested party. You’re bound to learn something cool about yourself.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free e-audio copy of this book in exchange for my review.
I haven't really gotten into the world of astrology - I know my sign and have read my horoscope from time to time, but I'm pretty much a beginner on the whole topic. For me, this was a great book - the actual book would be wonderful, though. The narrator was entertaining and enjoyable to listen to, but there were so many references to charts and tables, and my e-audio ARL didn't come with the PDF, so I felt a bit lost. However, I enjoyed the way the book was laid out so much, I did put the print copy of the book on my wish list so that when the book is released, I can see the charts and images while I re-read the book.
For someone who is familiar with astrology and birth charts and related topics, this might not be very enjoyable, this really is an intro to the topic, and a bit of a selling point for the Sanctuary app. However, I do feel that you could probably enjoy this book/audio without downloading the app at all. (I did download the app, however it is not working today while I finished listening, so I can't make a comment to the actual app.) IT does feel like the book could be a reference book, separate from the app.
I don't know how much weight I place on things like astrology, but I've always found it such a fun and interesting thing to learn about. (Is that very Libra of me?)
All in all I really enjoyed this book. I definitely want to get my hands on a physical copy just to see how the audio compares against the print, but I really liked the audiobook. The sections are broken down clearly and the narrator is great as well. You can speed it up or slow it down without it sounding ridiculous which is nice.
Definitely learned some things I didn't know about astrology while reading this. I especially loved the history aspect of this book. OH! I also think the fact that there is an app is such a bonus. I downloaded it while reading and I can't wait to dive into it more.
If you're into astrology or you just want to learn a few things about it, I think this is the perfect beginner book. Definitely a book you can read in a matter of hours, and I'd say its well worth the read.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for access to the eaudio.
Almost didn't continue reading because from the beginning it had a patronizing tone, assumes the audience is an absolute beginner who picked this book up because of astro memes, and so the author is going to really break it down for you and take it slow so your pretty little head doesn't get overwhelmed.🙄 But this is a case where the Instagram account is better (although I've come across some accusations of the account stealing meme ideas from smaller independent astrologers and repackaging it as their own. Don't ask me for receipts, do your own investigation.) This book is an alright primer, but only a handful of examples are given in each section (such as the houses), and there isn't a complete rundown. One is only given the very basic and general definitions then left to connect the dots for oneself on what it could possibly mean for your own chart. Maybe done on purpose, so you download their app? The graphics are consistent with the aesthetic though. Would recommend as Baby's First Astro book, maybe, but overall I left feeling disappointed.
As a follower of Sanctuary on Instagram, seeing that this book is from them was an immediate draw for me. I had an idea what I’d be getting into with this book and it didn’t disappoint.
I’d read a few other reviews and I will say - if youre not a believer in astrology, this won’t convert you. It just a basic guide for those that are curious about astrology and how it works. It goes over the planets and the signs in a short and easy to grasp fashion. There’s nothing about it that’s meant to convince anyone of the validity of astrology, it’s just for those that are curious - as the title says.
I received the audiobook from NetGalley (thank you!) and my comments on that are pretty standard. The narrator uses an upbeat tone of voice and keeps the content fun and light while giving out the information included in this book.
Overall I’m gonna give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. As long as you take this book for what it is, it’s great!
To be honest, I am not really sure who this book is meant for: if you're new to astrology and don't know anything beyond your sun sign, there's no indication in the book how you should go about finding out, so most of the book will be a mystery to you. If you do know your chart and you're wanting to find out more, there are descriptions of what the different planets and houses represent, but you're left to interpret what the signs in those planets or houses mean on your own. And if you are into astrology, there's nothing here that you don't already know. The book also has an overall dismissive tone about other practices of astrology.
This book could have been much improved by a section on what each planet or sign means in an area of your chart/in your houses, the way each astrological sign has a paragraph on what it means if it is your sun, moon, or rising sign. I left feeling like I had spent $25 only to be told I should still pay for a reading from Sanctuary anyway.
As an audiobook, this book is fine. However, as the narrator of the book points out - there are certain aspects of this book that can only be utilized when read in print format. This is exactly what the title states it is - a guide - a beginners guide to astrology. I particularly like the fact that it was made clear from the start of the book that this book is about the western zodiac and astrology. They make mention of some of the other types of astrology and different types of zodiacs, but they make it clear that other sources are needed if the reader wants to learn about these other zodiacs. The narrator also mentions the different types of astrology and how many different iterations that the field of astrology has gone through over the centuries. If you are interested in astrology at all, this is an excellent overview guide to the Zodiac and provides a lot of information in regards to each sign and how to interpret them. Absolutely recommend this book.
I've been super into astrology lately and learning more about it. So this was definetly very imformative. The audiobook listening experience was enjoyable. Though I feel I would benefit from getting a phyiscal copy; I'll be getting one when it comes out.
As for the content, this is perfect for beginners getting into astrology and understanding the basics. It discusses the personal planets (sun, moon, ascendent, mercury, mars and venus) and the outer planets (jupitier, uranus, neptune and pluto). This also devles into the twelve houses and what they represent.
Overall, it was a great read and would highly recommend it for those wanting to learn the basics about astrology.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an audio-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I've always been interested in astrology since I was very young, but I just recently began the deep dive into full charts. I admit that I did come into this book with some prior knowledge, but I really enjoyed how easy this book was to grasp. Astrology has a lot of different aspects, and I really appreciate how I was still able to learn something new. I definitely recommend this book as a starting point for anyone that wants to learn more about astrology. I really enjoyed it, but I did wish for a bit more interaction either with more cheatsheets or worksheets to help interact with the aspects for learning purposes.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a general guide about astrological signs and their meanings. As someone who had no previous experience or knowledge on this topic, I enjoyed learning about the history of astrology, and related information about the birth chart.
The narrator was very entertaining, with a bubbly voice and I appreciated the jokes sprinkled throughout the book. This layout in this book was unique, in that the reader can read the entire book or read certain sections, but they would still learn new information. For instance, I learned a lot from the overview of the signs and Big 3 but am still confused about the planets.
Overall, this was a nice, easy way to learn about an unfamiliar topic.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for an ARC of this book.
Book Review: ✨What’s your sign? A Guide to Astrology for the Cosmically Curious by Sanctuary Astrology & Jorjeana Marie (Narrator)✨
Pub date: 15/03/22
My feelings represented as emojis: ✨✨✨🌌🌌🌌♏️♏️♏️♏️💗💗💗📖📖🎧🎧💫💫💫
So I am unsure of my feelings towards astrology and tbh I still am even after listening to this. I have always loved reading my sign (scorpio ♏️💀) for the day, month or year and really felt that I connected to it and that it was my sign 100% but my boyfriend is the same sign as me (his bday is 2 days before mine) and he just is not a scorpio so I have always been interesting in learning why people can be the same sign and completely different people. This audiobook definitely helped me understand a bit about this, but didn’t go too much into it allowing a lot of room for unanswered questions from me!
However, this did provide an interesting overview of astrology and was informative if only on a beginner level. It for sure is the perfect book for people wanting to get into astrology as it goes through all the basics. It also has an app that you can use whilst reading it which I thought was a good idea but was kinda all over the place in practice. On the app you couldn’t skip around as the book said that you could, but other than that I think the app paired with this was a great idea and if updated it could be a way to bring more information and allow the reader extra tools to deepen their understanding! I feel it would have been more effective as a physical book/ e-book rather than an audiobook but nonetheless I thought it achieved what it soughed out to!
I loved how it expanded on more than just your sun sign. I never understood anything else other than that but now I think I’m beginning to understand and enjoy other sides of astrology! I would love to deepen my knowledge beyond this book and do believe it was a great starting block to learning more about astrology!
Overall I would recommend for people wanting to get into astrology but if you want to get into the nitty gritty of it you would for sure need more than this! I’m going to give it 3⭐️
✨ Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for a honest review ✨
This is a good basic beginners guide to astrology. It's ecstatically pleasing, easy to understand and well laid out. As someone who studies astrology, i found it contained very basic information and didn't encompass the true heart and soul of meanings, even on that basic level. It seemed to focus more on filler sentences instead of ones of substance and information. The concept and idea of this was on point, but it missed the boat when it comes to explanations of the signs in particular. There are so many books on the basics, it would be refreshing to see books on the more intermediate or advanced levels.
Thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
