You're Wade, a schlubby middle-aged computer repairman, sent to fix a computer in a vacant, nondescript office building. When you get inside the door locks behind you, and you can't get out. Now the adventure begins! You have to explore this building and try to find your way home. The building is huge on the inside with a lot of sprawling hallways and empty rooms, and your only hope is to uncover clues and try to work out the mystery this whole experience hangs on.

Presented as a blend of classic 'choose your own adventure' stories and point-and-click escape games, 2120 offers readers the chance to explore these liminal spaces and, at the same time, take an existential journey of discovery.

I didn't manage to finish this because it scared me so much that I had an anxiety attack, but I'm giving it five stars for exactly that reason. If you're a fan of liminal horror such as The Backrooms, you will adore this. I can't stop thinking about how if this was a video game, letsplayers and streamers would eat this up and make it a cult hit. But I wouldn't change the format for the world. It's an impressive feat to make a choice-based graphic novel that's so deeply scary, with challenging puzzles that are difficult to cheat (I had to write notes), and a hard-hitting story (yes, I skipped to the end to see what it all meant). I'm sure those who have more tolerance to horror than me will be able to enjoy the full experience.

Difficile quesito, anzi forse é facile, basta iniziare a sfogliarlo e magari poi...

"Welcome to 2120 Macmillan Drive."

Designed like a "point and click" or "choose your own adventure" game, 2120 takes the concept into the comics medium. Though not entirely unique on this front, George Wylesol's version might be the most unnerving replication of some of the horror themed point-and-click video games for the early days of the game format. The reader plays as Wade Duffy, a middle-aged computer repairman who has been called into an office building to take a look at a computer. Finding the front door of the building leads to an entirely deserted and decrepit looking room, Wade finds that he is stuck inside. Forced to work his way through the labyrinthine hallways of 2120, the story begins to unravel some horrifying discoveries.

A lot of 2120 is simply traversing mundane hallways and observing random objects like printed out memos, sticky notes and exposed wires, but every so often, the reader is exposed to branching decisions and some puzzle solving. It's highly recommended to take notes as you go since there will definitely be times where codes need to be broken or dead ends will be met. Some aspects of the design here are a little frustrating for the format, like backing out of said dead ends, which is where this story feels better suited for a point-and-click video game. But as I progressed further, the genius behind 2120 as a comic book really emerges. My first playthrough where I managed to get Wade out safely was a mundane venture, but as I was flicking through the pages navigating the endless hallways on my way out, I would be occasionally flashed by creepy images. It conditions the reader to expect a horrifying story, and yet, it's very possible to experience none of that during the playthrough. Indeed, I was so curious about the other narratives, I forced (rather, cheated) my way backwards through some of the other story outcomes. There emerges an intertextual narrative, one that can easily be experienced because this is a comic book and one can see all the pages as they work through the book. It's this design that underscores the genius behind 2120.

So yes, this can and probably will frustrate you for some time as you work through the winding hallways of the story. But if you allow the unsettling mundanity of the setting to really soak over you, this will be an experience like no other.

You are playing the role of Wade Duffy, a 46-year-old computer repairman called to solve a fault at Macmillan drive 2120. However, as soon as he sets foot in the building, the door closes hermetically, locking in the poor Wade. Thus begins his quest inside the building, which is increasingly disturbing. This is not a linear story, but you will jump from one pint to the other depending on the choices you will do, winking at point and click videogame of the 1990's. In my opinion, 2120 is closer to an horror graphic novel rather than to a book game. You will die a lot of times, and at the end you will perceive not to have read but to have participated in a very immersive story, experience strengthened by the multiple paths taken.

I never used the Goodreads spoiler tags because I just never felt the need to spoiler something. But in this case I will make my first exception, since maybe some of you might have read this book and comments something interesting. SPOILER:

I am a bioinformatics technician, but I was completely unaware of this cyber element. Consequently, the final discovery left me ecstatic. And I have not ruled out reading again this book to complete some paths and secondary puzzles that I haven't solved for the moment.

Wait, hold on a minute… Is that… Is that Avery Hill Publishing?

A couple of days ago I spotted a review on my friends Room Escape Artist’s website for a book by none other than one of my favourite authors at my absolute all time favourite publishing house. Is it strange to have a favourite publishing house? Maybe. But I’ve backed just about every Kickstarter they’ve ever run, and any time anyone gives me money and tells me to treat myself, I head immediately to Avery Hill’s website. I don’t know why this started, and I’m not like this with any other publishing house. It’s just whatever they publish I know I’ll love. I haven’t disliked a single book they’ve produced, and that’s cool.

But wait, I’m getting ahead of myself. This isn’t’ about Avery Hill, this is about George Wylesol’s 2120. My love for Wylesol started way back with Internet Crusader – a book I’m proud to say isn’t just on my shelf, but is now also on the shelves of most of my good friends too. According to Wylesol’s website, Internet Crusader is:

“full-length graphic novel telling the story of a doomsday cult and the fight against the literal devil, told through collages of chat windows, video games, and other early web design.”

I… LOVE IT.

So when I found out 2120 had come out via spotting a review on REA, I did a double take. Not just a new book, but a new book literally packed with puzzles. Sign me the heck up.

Graphic novel a bivi.

Seems like it was heavily inspired by the game The Stanley Parable, but is still pretty cool in its own right.

marking as read but i definitely haven't hit all the pages/scenarios yet. i need to build a spreadsheet to map it out and make sure i don't follow the same paths over and over again, and to keep track of any of the hints that are given for various codes and lock numbers.

the time, skill and attention to detail to make such a bizarre book is next level. describing it as a "liminal choose-your-own-adventure graphic novel" doesn't do it justice. this is a piece of art that, in an ideal world, will spring up forums to discuss it and track the various endings.

anyway i'm off to build that spreadsheet. i hope my computer doesn't need fixing.

One of the greatest reading experiences I have ever had. It is essentially an escape room in a book. I had so much fun solving each and every puzzle and deciphering the mystery behind the office. The enjoyment factor was enough to earn a good score from me, but the plot surprisingly comes together with a strong ending that manages to tie every dangling plot thread together. George Wylesol is a genius and I will be sure and check out more of his previous works in the near future.

Ok I’ve never written a review before and my brain is super chaotic so this review might be too. But this book was so good. I honestly read it because of Alice Oseman’s review, and I have never been more excited for a book. It’s set up almost as a physical video game and you’re trying to get out from a building.

Positives:
- This book is so complex. Eventually, there is one true ending, but there are so many things to explore and so many ways to get to that ending. I also had to restart the book and start tabbing it (yes, it’s a library book) because there were so many things that I couldn’t keep track of.
- The art style is very cool
- It’s horroresque, similar to the backrooms liminal horror, so if you like that stuff you’ll love this.
- The “true” ending is completely worth it

Negatives:
- There were some grammatical errors (wrong form of it’s/its)
- This might just be me, but I did have to cheat to get past one of the puzzles
- This also may not be negative, but I got extremely frustrated trying to figure out said puzzle. This is a very frustrating book, but it’s worth it in the end

All in all, I think this is an extremely underrated book and I would love for it to reach further. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and I appreciate that there’s so many side plots you can figure out. I haven’t opened all the doors yet, and I would love to reread this in the future to learn more about what’s hiding in here :)

Need to return to to complete it "correctly". Wonderful book, regardless.

Reread July 2025, regraded to 5 stars - it's well worth running through this a couple of times to completion. It's also worth picking through casually and finding the little secret loops scattered throughout the text.

I was not expecting something that close to a game, and I was certainly not expecting that in general, but I enjoyed it! Though I feel like some "puzzles" can be a bit hard and frustrating, so it could have been nice to have so hints/solutions at the end of the book

It's just an empty building.

I love in any choose your own adventure style media when your character is like "No! Don't make me go in there!" Guess what diva... you're going in there.

I read this 4 times - I’ll probably read it another 5. Something about a “choose your own adventure” that just gets me pumped!

The first read I did exactly what my first thought was and ended up escaping the building with no adventure at all, lol.
Second time round I went in curious, ended up dying. Third time I went in curious but careful…died again but KNEW where I slipped up. That’s what got me to fourth times a charm, and uncovered the frightening secret of what’s actually hidden in the building!

If you like horror and adventure, would recommend.

Awesome book! My rating is more based on how enjoyable the experience was tbf, I didn’t realise there were many endings with each one being as awful as the next! Super liminal artwork and just a desolate tone all throughout in all the best ways. Also a super cool looking piece to have on the shelf. Kind of want to see his other books of similar style!

This is an exceptional and highly original piece of work. I had never heard of George Wylesol before, but I was looking at forthcoming publications in my job as a bookshop manager and this looked intriguing enough to order in on the basis of the artwork. I have just read it with the 'weird fiction' reading group I facilitate at work and it is unlike anything else I have ever read.

Wylesol's art style is very distinct. It is inspired by Windows 95 and MS Paint, it is simple, bright, direct, and saturated with colour, with very defined print quality. One of the members of this reading group is an illustrator and he did a good job explaining what was so unique about this artwork.

The book itself is a kind of choose your own adventure story. People said it reminded them of point and click video games (but I haven't played those). It takes place mostly in the first person, and you are Wade, a 46 year old computer technician who has turned up at a business to repair a computer. You enter the building and find it apparently empty and abandoned. On each page you are invited to make choices of where to go and what to explore by flipping to different pages. As you go further into the building the mystery grows, and you have to solve puzzles to progress. It gets darker and stranger as it unfolds.

There aren't very many words, so it is driven more by imagery than text in a form of visual storytelling. It kind of reminded me of games like Silent Hill and Control, films like Mulholland Drive and Last Year at Marienbad and TV shows like Black Mirror - Bandersnatch or Severance. Other people were bringing up other works, or films or games it reminded them of, and they all tended to be works that challenge and strain the limits of the kind of format or genre they are in. People say it reminds them of The Stanley Parable video game, and I bought that immediately on the basis of the comparison. This should be a cult hit, and if it sounds interesting I really recommend checking it out.

A fantastic book that feels exactly like playing a classic computer game. Liminal spaces meets choose your own adventure. I haven’t gotten literally lost, as in I don’t know where I am (but I got lost the other way too) in a book like this since that one part of House of Leaves. I don’t know who you are but if you read this far just go get it. You won’t be disappointed.
