TOTM; Christian read; Paperback

Mayhem in Maryland is a collection of three, Christian mystery novels of which each are about 150 pages . They're a hybrid of the cozy mystery genre & of a woman dealing with the implications it has on her life and her normal life in general.

For Books 1 & 2 & 3 :

It first felt technically well written - and is, but I felt like it had the potential to be a solid good to really good. About another 50 pages (for each story) focused more on investigating /crime would have achieved that. It just needed a bit more development in nearly every category.

Other than that, I liked Speare's style and the family dynamics. Her characters aren't perfect, but still likable. The Christianity isn't over the top and it is VERY much a novel that non-believers can read. Speare definitely achieved in telling a quickly pleasurable read, that isn't at all reliant on vulgarity , sex (gasp! her married couple were still romantic)or gratuitous violence.

Final consensus: quick, mindless entertainment that does improve, but not something or an author that I HAVE to read. They're the type of books that are good to read when you are very busy, as you don't have to concentrate too much or are "intense" puzzles to solve. Reading on the fly reads .

Trish Cunningham is a mom who lives in a small town in Maryland. Finding a body in the milk case just complicates her life with her blended family. How she investigates the murder and keeps it all together is the first of these three related novels. In the second story she finds another body, this time in the high school band room. Her sleuthing irritates the local police detective, Eric Scott, but she persists because her teen-age step-son is a suspect. In the third story, Trish's mom finds the body of her best friend's ex-husband. Of course Trish has to get involved to save Abbie from going to jail for the murder.
A satisfying set that was perfect to have while traveling.

I only read the first story in this collection, because it was a bit gossipy for my taste. But I was impressed by the dynamic between the lead character and her stepdaughter. The tension was beautiful and very well written. And the mystery was intriguing too. I am sure the other two stories in this collection would follow suit.

I loved this collection of stories. The main character Trish reminded me so much of myself--worrying, getting too involved, having to solve the problem. I can see myself reading this again in a few years. Each story was as good as the previous one.

Good light reading; the characters are endearing, even if the main character has self-esteem issues.
