She suspects everyone of everything. Now, everyone suspects her.
For cemetery owner and world’s best fur-mom Jane Ladling, death is her business, romance is her misfortune and suspicion is her passion. When she discovers a fresh body on her porch, she calls Special Agent Conrad Ryan, her smoke-show of a boyfriend. Who isn’t actually her boyfriend. Whatever. It’s complicated, especially now that she’s being framed for the murder of the only “hard-hitting” journalist in the small town of Aurelian Hills, Georgia.
Determined to clear her good name, Jane dives headlong into following the clues––with best friends Fiona and Beau at her side. But can she identify the killer before she goes to jail? Or worse…there’s another victim?
Gena Showalter is the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of over seventy books, including the acclaimed Lords of the Underworld series, the Gods of War series, the White Rabbit Chronicles, and the Forest of Good and Evil series. She writes sizzling paranormal romance, heartwarming contemporary romance, and unputdownable young adult novels, and lives in Oklahoma City with her family and menagerie of dogs and cats.
I am absolutely loving this cozy mystery series by Gena Showalter & Jill Monroe. It's very different than what they usually write, but nonetheless extremely fun and enjoyable. I liked No Gravestone Left Unturned even more than the first book, I could tell both authors were more comfortable writing together and writing in this genre. It was such a feel-good story, that left me with a big smile on my face and demanding more. The romance, while still not the main focus of the book, was more present in this one and I can't wait for the third book to finally get some action between Jane and Conrad. If you're looking for a funny, cozy mystery series with a little bit of romance, I highly recommend the Jane Ladling Mystery series!
Disclaimer: I was able to read an early copy of this book as I work for the author.
I need more Jane Ladling alike books in my life, please do recommend them if you have any!
I want to use this review to talk about a big problem we have with books. This is a very big problem and I find it in mostly ALL the books, and so do you. It became such a big problem that even when it is not in the author's plan to use it in the book you are still expecting it and you are afraid to read it and cringe about it, BECAUSE IT IS A BAD PLOT/TROPE/THING TO USE. If any author uses this trope, I immediately see that book as worse than it actually is.
That being said, we need to talk about HEALTHY PLATONIC RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN. If I ask any person to give an example of a healthy platonic relationship from a book, any book, it would be so hard to come up with one, BUT IF YOU ASK ABOUT AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP that the author wants to sell as a love story, we have 10000 books to pick from. How did the world get so fucked up?
When Beau was first introduced to the story and he started to seem as most than a side-forgotten character I WAS SHITTING MYSELF. I was really afraid this book will go that road and annoy and piss the fuck out of me and make me not enjoy this book at all. BUT IT DID NOT.
The road I was expecting it to go was a fucking lame love triangle in which the male that was 100% not the one the main character is going to end up with loving the F character and really, the bad drama that has nothing to do in SO MANY BOOKS. This trope has been such a used one that I expect it to appear everywhere and ruin everything, but it did not. I was so surprised and happy! The fact that this trope didn't let me enjoy this book from the beginning is horrible.
I want platonic friends between F & M to be normal. I want platonic friendships between EVERY GENRE TO BECOME A THING IN BOOKS. I want romance books to also have characters that are truly friends and have friendships, not only romantic BF/GF or romantic prospects from all the other people in those books.
BRING BACK THE PLATONIC FRIENDSHIPS. NOT EVERYONE HAS TO FUCK AND WANTS TO FUCK EACH OTHER IN BOOKS.
At this point this book could have been shit I wouldn't care, this is a 5-star for the friendships. The romance is so slow AND FUCKING LOVELY. None is fucking toxic as every fucking romance there is in this world at this point.
The crime plot is funny and interesting and the characters tight-knit makes everything better. I FUCKING LOVE THIS.
P.S. This is the same review as the first book because my opinion is the same, there is nothing else to add. The story is just as lovely, the friendships in this one are the same, PERFECT AND BEAUTIFUL AND HEALTHY, the relationships aspect is still slow and beautiful. Crime is still a thing and the way everything comes together, in the end, is not perfect but fun and entertaining. I read this for the crime aspect and the lovely relationships there are in this book, be it friendship or romantic.
In this second installment of the Jane Ladling Mystery series, we get fun, hijinks, romance, and some new friends.
Jane is having a normal day at her cemetery, pulling weeds and things like that when she notices a particularly nasty weed. Thorn Apple. And of course she accidentally has some blow in her mouth. Jane winds up higher than a kite. During this time, she basically drunk dials a whole bunch of people. It’s as embarrassing as it sounds. Except Jane really just rolls with the punches. She owns it and is nowhere near embarrassed. I would, of course, move away and change my name. But I guess when you’re known as the weird girl, you embrace it, Cemetery Girl.
Her friend Beau is still her security guard, and now he’s bought a place for his security business and brought in some of his friends from the military to join him. I loved the new additions to her team. And Conrad. I really enjoyed seeing more of Agent Conrad Ryan. He was able to have more time as Jane’s boyfriend and less time as the agent in charge of the case against her. It really gave him space to grow. My favorite thing about him is that he’s patient with Jane. She 100% believes that the Ladling women are cursed, so she’s afraid to fall in love. He gets that, he gets her, and that is so important to their story.
When a dead body is found on Jane’s porch, it seems like Jane is being framed for a murder. And while that really sucks, she does happen to have left some really wild voicemails on the poor woman’s phone from when she was under the influence of the Thorn Apple. It’s not looking good for Jane. But heck, she solved the mystery of the last dead body left on her property, she’ll just have to do it again.
So while Jane is off solving the mystery of why a dead woman wound up on her porch, she’s absolutely channeling her inner Jessica Fletcher (if you don’t know who that is, look up Murder, She Wrote. Best show ever!). She’s snooped, uh, she’s investigated, yeah, she’s investigated and discovered that her dead friend was a reporter and her latest story seemed to be about speed dating. So Jane and her friends go sign up. She even drags Beau along, determined to hunt down information…and to hunt down a date for him! She really has the best friends.
Meanwhile Conrad is not officially on the case, and he is a very by the books type of person so he keeps the police department apprised of whatever they find out. He’s been helping where he can, and he doesn’t want Jane running off on her own into dangerous situations, so he wants to stay close. He’s a very supportive boyfriend. The two of them work well together, and if there is a Ladling Curse, it’s going down. These two will have their happy ending, and it’s going to be so exciting to see.
I’m getting a kick out of this fun and funny series. This is Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe at their most fun. You can tell they enjoyed writing it, and you can see their love for the story in each word. I also really enjoyed the direction this book took us, and I can’t wait for the next installment!

When I first saw that they were looking for arc readers for this book, I was afraid I was too busy. But, when the question appeared on my timeline again it felt like a sign. I really loved the first book in this series. I will get the paperback edition of this book as soon as it's available anyway, so it was hard to say no to a chance to already read it in advance. And today, in the train and in the bus to and from work, I had once again a lot of fun with Jane and her friends.
We can discuss if Jane is actually good at being a detective. Her mind has already jumped to a lot of conclusions before she even found the tiniest clue and her research is not very structured and for sure not always legal, but her enthusiasm and how determined she is to find out who did it and to solve the case is endearing and most of all contagious. I think I can read a thousand more Jane Ladling mysteries and I will never grow bored.
That's also because the cases are quite nice and are actually, despite Jane being quite chaotic in her research, very well written and constructed. Since Jane jumps from conclusion to conclusion and changes her theory constantly it's impossible to know for sure who did it and yet the hints and clues are all there. However, it seems that there's also this bigger story arc, spanning over more than one book. I can't wait to see where that goes!
Just like I can't wait to see what will happen next in Jane's private life. I love watching her detect, but I love watching her being a friend and girlfriend even more. Mostly because in a way she is absolutely not smooth and skilled when it comes to relationships of whatever kind, but she's so pure and honest and real and open. It's impossible NOT to love Jane and therefore I'm not surprised that this amazing and loving guy(s) fell for her so hard.
* You need to read the previous book for all the context.
When cemetery owner Jane Ladling finds another body on het doorstep, she knows what to do next: She has to investigate the murder and find out who the perp is and accuse them. With the help of her friends Fiona and Beau and while her maybe-maybe not boyfriend Conrad keeps an eye on them. In her usual blunt and spontaneous style, Jane sets out to find out the truth, even though she might learn more than she ever could have bargained for.
These books are so fun and easy to read, always the perfect, light read to clear your head in between heavier books. This was a bit more annoying than the previous book, but at least you will be laughing while reading, so I guess that is fine. I will keep reading this series, it is light and fun and I hope Rolex gets a bigger role in the next book again. I missed him a bit in this book.
Second installment in this cozy mystery series. The romance between Jane and Conrad develops very nicely in this book (note: this still isn't a categorical romance, though, so those of you bemoaning the lack of spice or smut need to calm tf down) and the story overall was very much enjoyable. Gena & Jill work phenomenally together, their styles are virtually seamless.
Similar to its predecessor, there are a number of funny moments here, and the story in general is just so wholesome and entertaining, I was smiling throughout. Jane borders on manic at times, and quite frankly, I find her impossible not to love. She's just so pure and honest and real - I adore her.
three stars! ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ gah that ending made me swoon! jane and conrad’s relationship is literally just so sweet, i love how conrad is just so doting to her and her needs. they’re literally adorable and easily my favorite part of this series! i had a blast reading this installment, and i love these characters so much. jane definitely gives off jessica day vibes from ‘new girl’ and while a little annoying at times, honestly it’s so fun. if these books were set during the fall time, that would make them even better i swear. i can’t wait to see what happens next!
What's worse than being accused of murder? Being accused twice! Poor Jane Ladling is once again a suspect in a murder investigation. Hey its not her fault bodies keep turning up at her place, I mean it is a cemetery! What do people expect? Once again Jane is smack dab in the middle of a police investigation. The only smart thing to do? Investigate herself!
Can she prove her innocence? Is there really such a thing as constantly being in the wrong place at the wrong time or is Jane really a killer? Find out by reading Gena and Jill's newest installment in the Jane Ladling series. Includes a very murder curious house panther named Rolex, a sassy older best friend and two hunky men 😉 What more could a reader ask for?
This was another hilarious mystery, I loved watching Jane deal with this investigation where she's the main suspect! Can't wait for the next installment!
Welcome back to the Garden of Memories Cemetery, where the last person was buried 6 years ago but the most recent body was found today…on Jane’s porch. What are the odds that a second body would show up after Jane solved the murder mystery of the last one? Someone seems to have it out for Jane. And who better to investigate than Jane herself (like anyone could do a batter job, duh).
Just as quirky as always, Jane does not disappoint. She jumps to strange conclusions and investigates things that don’t seem to be related to the case, all while dodging her feeling for Detective Special Agent Conrad Ryan so she doesn’t fall prey to the Ladling curse. But our dark haired detective lets her fuel her adrenaline addiction always reassuring her that she’s worth the wait.
The authors have outdone themselves with this second book. I laughed at Jane’s schemes and swooned over Conrad’s sultry looks. And when we got to meet his brother Wyatt… that man can call me out on my feeling any day. This book offered more development for the side characters and left me wondering about Beau. Maybe Jane has rubbed off on me but there’s maybe, probably but most likely definitely something being hidden from us by that man. I can’t wait to find out what mischief Team Truth gets in to next.
I was provided with an advanced readers copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In the second installment in the Jane Ladling Mystery series, we return to the The Garden of Memories Cemetary in the small town of Aurelian Hills.
There is another dead body (of course). It wouldn’t be a mystery if there wasn’t. This time it’s the body of a “hard hitting” journalist and former classmate, that gets left on Jane’s front porch.
She obviously calls Special Agent Conrad Ryan, to help her solve the mystery. She is still fighting her feelings for him as she doesn’t want to fall under her family's curse where the women are fated to lose any man they love. You get to see more of Conrad’s personality in this book and we also get introduced to his brother Wyatt.
There is also more of Beau and we are introduced to three of his friends Trick, Isaac & Holden. Beau is a lot more open in this book than he was in book 1. I think there is more to him than meets the eye. We shall see.
Jane is just as crazy in this book, as she was in the first and you get just as much of her inner dialogue as you did before, especially in the scene where she accidentally swallows the seed of a Thorn Apple and starts to hallucinate that a tree is talking to her and giving her advice.
Jane is also just as confidant. She obviously starts investigating the murder herself again with her friends and Rolex at her side. After all, there is no one better than her to solve this mystery.
The only thing I don’t like about these books are the covers. I hate to admit that even though I really enjoyed this book, I would walk past it if I saw it on a shelf in a book store, however I’m going to continue with this series. I’m looking forward to book 3, Game of Graves.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the authors in exchange for an honest review.

No Gravestone Left Unturned is the second book in the Jane Ladling Mystery Series! I recommend reading Romancing The Gravestone first!! You won't regret it!
Truth Be Told, I absolutely loved this book!! If I had to describe this series in one word I'd have to say wholesome!! I loved the first book and this book did not disappoint!!
One thing about this book I really adore is Jane! She is a character I don't think you see very much of in books. She is a complete mess and raw but always finds ways to overcome obstacles in her way! Jane has such a big heart, hilarious personality and is just so fun to get to know! Her methods are a bit unorthodox and her fashion choices for her male friends is hilariously outrageous! Jane is such a pure soul, and a devoted mother to her fur baby Rolex! I always find myself smiling when I'm reading these books! It kept me entertained and guessing throughout the story!
I'm so fond of these characters and it just keeps getting better! Team truth is the best! This series is such a joy to read and it has quickly become comfort books for me!
I highly recommend this series for anyone who wants a mystery served with a smile, a very fun and amazing cast of characters! It will leave you hungry for more and blueberry pancakes!
I received a arc copy from the authors for an honest review!
Gloriously flighty Jane has another body turn up in her cemetery (not one that's supposed to be there, alas) and she's at it again as she tries to find the culprit. She knows she didn't do it and she's determined to prove it. Even if it puts her in danger.
Her almost-hunny-bunny Special Agent Ryan is both amused by and terrified by her behavior. He's also unfailingly patient with her. Between her romantic quirks (she refuses to fall for the hunky special agent because she's convinced her family line is cursed and she'll lose him the moment she sets her heart on him) and her propensity for rushing headlong toward danger with ZERO regard for her own personal well-being, Jane can be a lot. (And that's not even mentioning how loopy she gets when sick or slightly drugged up by questionable plants in her cemetery. LOL)
Jane might have issues with dead bodies showing up unexpectedly, but her friends have her back. Between Fiona's can-do attitude and Beau's slightly more steadying presence, plus Conrad's sexy smolder looking out for her, Jane gets the job done. Wild theories, rhyming names and all.
This was another cute, cozy mystery by Gena and Jill. Jane is back with her overly confident attitude that walks a fine line between being endearing and silly. When another body turns up at her cemetery she wastes no time getting into trouble, I mean solving the case. I love her friendships and how they all just roll with whatever craziness she jumps into. This isn't my typical genre, but I'm really loving this series just for something light, fun, and enjoyable to read.
Fall into the funny quirky world of Jane Ladling owner of a Cemetery in Aurelian Hills. This will make you laugh, smile and make your troubles go away. The best characters just take you along for a wonderful ride which you never want to get off. She is making a habit of getting involved in investigating when dead bodies land on her doorstep along with friends Fiona and Beau and boyfriend (maybe) Special Agent Conrad Ryan they are all for finding the Truth and maybe a bit of Gold?
Another quirky appearance by our favorite cemetery girl, Jane. As her and Conrad's relationship starts to grow, another body is discovered in her cemetery. With not only the help of her crush, she enlists the help of Fiona and Beau to figure out the latest mysteries surrounding town. Again, Jane is lovable and as always, gives me Jess Day from New Girl vibes.
What a fun story. Cozy mysteries are so much fun sometimes. I was in the perfect mood for this story. No Gravestone Left Unturned was just the right light entertainment. The characters are ...well...characters. The mystery was intriguing. The book was perfect as a stand alone since I hadn't read the first book in the series. I'd like to go back and read it now to fill in some blanks but the entire back story wasn't necessary for this.
Jane and her crazy group of friends are so endearing. They make a great, loving family. The absolute trust and genuine caring are touching. Jane takes her cemetary so seriously. When some bad characters start tearing it up looking for gold she's not happy but when a body shows up on her porch she's both horrified and overly curious to solve the mystery. Conrad is so good for her. Who else would love her despite her interference in his work and her complete disregard for her own safety?
I loved the characters so much. I loved their comradery. I alway enjoyed Jane and Conrad's interactions. The authors did a good job of pulling me along right up to the end.
Wow. I’d like to start off by saying, Jane can cook for me any day because the meals she makes sound heavenly.
Jane is still as quirky as ever but she’s also very committed and loyal. She’s fierce, kind and is so confident in who she is that it makes me love her so much (even when she does things she shouldn’t!!).
We got to see more of Conrad and his personality; who knew he could be so seductive!? We also got more of Beau who has come out of his shell a bit more, but this man is mostly mystery and I want more of him (and his friends) in my life!!!
The way Jane’s brain works is a mystery in itself, but a private investigator? No one could do it better!
Overall, this book was romantic, mysterious, and I absolutely adored it!! I cannot wait to see what needs to be solved next.

Love these series, even if I usually don’t like continuous series with the same characters. I care more about HEA. Because when you read long series, in most of them there is a point when main characters either drift apart, cheat or someone else appears as a love interest, worst are love triangles… that way I try not to read these kind of series or I rarely finish watching long TV series with loads of seasons specially the ones about romance. To the case. This is the second book and slow burning or whatever readers call it… love story….. Im like gutted that these two are not living together already but you know otherwise it would be boring and no point reading… I think they are absolutely great characters. I really like them Both and the friends as well. Jane is absolutely Nix kind of character (IAD by K.Cole) - beautiful, clever, quirky, unique and possibly crazy and apparently adrenaline junkie. Agent Conrad - well he is - man of your dreams! - and probably more, and 100% understanding and will wait forever for her… already…. The looks, job, attitude, charisma, smile… everything. Humorous and light read, exciting and not at all boring, uplifting, good in-betweener or when you have a headache. 😅

I was so anxious to read this book. Although I found the 1st one silly it was also adorable and I felt joy while reading it. I expected to feel the same way reading No Gravestone Left Unturned but, no, no way. It was too much silly and so childish. Conrad, oh poor Conrad, who looked so heroic in the first book but here he was so, so lame. And there's too much of Beau all around, I'm starting to hate this guy. Sorry...
I absolutely adored No Gravestone Left Unturned, the second book in the Jane Ladling cozy mystery series from Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe. Jane Ladling is back with her fantastic (and frankly enviable) crew, fresh off of solving a murder in Romancing the Gravestone. But this time, someone is out to frame Jane for a murder and it's going to take all the help and insight from her maybe-boyfriend Conrad, security guy Beau, and best friend Fiona to keep Jane out of jail and the rest of Aurelian Hills safe.
Right from the start, I knew we were going to be in for a wild ride in this book. Hallucinogenic plants, speed dating, and Jane's family curse repeatedly used as a crutch - Jane has a whole lot going on in sleepy Aurelian Hills, Georgia.
And as much as Jane has going on, there's even more to love about this book. The cozy mystery aspect is done so well. Jane, by her very nature, suspects a handful of people in every murder investigation she takes part in, so as the reader we may suspect right along with Jane but we can't really know until the big reveal. Showalter and Monroe did an excellent job at giving us just enough clues without revealing the ending until Jane figures it out herself.
Jane herself gave me so many laugh-out-loud moments; from her accidental plant ingestion, to her slow fall for Conrad, to literally every time Jane and Fiona are on the page together, Jane is a star on the page whether she realizes it or not (and one of the many things I love about Jane is that she doesn't, in fact, realize she is). Jane runs in about a thousand directions at any given time, and she's just honestly a breath of fresh air - especially in a cozy mystery setting. Jane wasn't without her faults, though, specifically when it comes to panicking over her family's curse; I'm anxiously awaiting the book when Jane accepts all the love Conrad has to offer.
Of course, Jane doesn't carry this story alone. The supporting cast is beyond excellent; Beau, Conrad, Fiona, and the feisty black cat Rolex are entertaining, supportive, and remain friendship goals. Fiona is just the best at encouraging Jane's questionable decisions, and I love that this sexagenarian is Jane's number one cheerleader. Despite the fact that Jane and Beau's end goals don't always seem to line up, I love him in this big brother/protective role he's taken on since the first book; there were some great bits in Beau's character arc in this book and I can't wait to see where his journey takes him in future Jane Ladling mysteries.
Conrad deserves a paragraph all on his own. Conrad has gone to secretive grump in the first book to a less secretive grump with hints of softy showing through. He really is the perfect guy for Jane; he is patient when others are not, understanding even when Jane is breaking the law, and loving even when Jane is afraid to accept it. By far, my favorite quality of Conrad's is his ability to just get Jane. He has my favorite quote in the whole book: "'Don't worry,' he said. 'I'm done pushing tonight. I'll continue to give you space until you're ready for more.'" How utterly swoon-worthy is that coming from him, the stoic, quiet Special Agent? He loves her, but knows Jane is skittish and is willing to wait for however long she needs. And Conrad backs up his words with his actions. He never pushes Jane, and you can tell he means what he says. When Jane finally looks past her family's curse and lets herself fall for Conrad, it will be magical on the page.
I loved every aspect of No Gravestone Left Unturned. The mystery was, indeed, cozy; the characters were well done and had such great arcs; and the ending wrapped everything up while still leaving me wanting more from all these characters. I thoroughly enjoyed No Gravestone Left Unturned and can't wait for the next Jane Ladling adventure.
A huge thank you to authors Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe for sharing an advanced review copy of this title via their Author Talk Media company.
Okay, I'm writing this review for both cozy Jane Ladling Mystery books, Romancing the Gravestone bk1 and No Gravestone Left Unturned bk2, together. Because I read them back to back not wanting to stop to write separate reviews. They are two fun quick reads that connect well and make it easy to do this. I like that! They are also complete stories on their own with all vital information woven in making it easy to read as stand alone. I like that.
The books are told from Jane Ladling's point of view! I love this character, fun and quirky! A definite unique way of looking at things. I connected to her nonlinear rambling way to get to a point. And her suspicious mind that made everyone a suspect. The fun, and at times, edge of seat path her determined sleuthing took the reader on was highly entertaining and added to the twists and turns, leaving you guessing who to suspect.
Although she did not grow as an investigator, why should she! She did grow on a personal level. Her walls started to come down, opening her to recognize friendships and possible romance...even though the possibility of losing someone she cared about terrified her. The reasons for this and why she prefers those who are buried and can't leave her are revealed wonderfully in her backstory. And though the story is light, it does tug at the heartstrings on occasion. Growing up amongst Gravestones and becoming caretaker of the family owned cemetery are apparent elements that shaped her personality. The small town atmosphere is well done and helps the plot advance or stall when needed, including Jane’s relationships with residents and how they seem to see her.
I loved the secondary characters. Jane’s observations of body language and conversation, witty banter, gave the reader great insight into them. Even if Jane misinterpreted them at times, making the story even more entertaining... along with quite a few dreamy sigh and eyeroll moments that endeared this series even more. I was Team Conrad although I hope Jane’s and Fiona's matchmaking skills work for Beau and friends, and with matches with more longevity. And I'm hoping no more non cemetery residents end up visiting Jane...well maybe not. I'm really looking forward to the next Jane Ladling Mystery!
I highly suggest reading book one, Romancing the Gravestone before diving into No Gravestone Left Unturned - you'll get a great backstory of the drama, why the body was dumped on Jane's front porch and most importantly - an introduction to Conrad and Beau. It isn't a book you want to miss. You can read my review of Romancing the Gravestone here.
The absolute best thing about the Jane Ladling series is its ability to hook you instantly. Straight from the prologue her hilarious, quirky personality shone through and I was addicted. Jane is quirky and slightly bonkers and a firm favourite of mine.
Argh! Earlier, she'd lost her sunglasses. What would be next? Her good sense? Her dignity? Or had she already parted with those?
This series put the cosy mystery genre onto my radar and I regret nothing - it is the cutest, funniest and quirkiest series I've read in years. This series literally makes me laugh out loud and I don't think I'll ever forget it. The romance is very minimal yet the grip Conrad has on my heart is insane (I'm also very partial to Beau). Jane is convinced her family is cursed as none of the women of her family have found true love and been able to to keep a hold it - but it's looking like Ladling curse with a certain hunky cop named Conrad. Or Beau. You know what, I'll be happy with either....or both.
What was my favourite part of the novel, you ask? Oh, I'll tell you. Have you ever witnessed somebody refusing to be dismissed by a cop? Jane Ladling did. In fact, she convinced the Sheriff to lock her up, and I completely lost it when she said this:
"I'm done arguing about this Sherriff. you lock me in the slammer and throw away the key, or ill be lodging a formal complaint with the city council. Then I'll come after your job! ill find a way to become next sheriff, just see if I don't.
Jill Monroe and Gena Showalter are the best and they have created such an iconic character with Jane Ladling. I will read anything they write - separately or together - and if you haven't read this one then you are missing out on a cracking series!
I am still relatively new to the cozy mystery genre, but I have to say that I’m loving it. Or at the very least, I’m loving this series.
If I had to describe this book in three words, they would be: wacky, adorbable, hilarious. This series is one of the most fun and light reads I’ve read.
Jane’s suspicions know no bounds, need no logic. Her whole thought process can be summed up by these two quotes:
Maybe the pair were innocent…but probably not.
Hmm. Blake. Jake. Could rhyming names mean anything?
She’s honestly the most strange, adorable, and unseriously serious detective. I mean, she even made the sheriff lock her up because she could’ve recklessly endangered animals:
“I’m done arguing about this, Sheriff. You lock me in the slammer and throw away the key, or I’ll be lodging a formal complaint with the city council. Then I’ll come after your job! I’ll find a way to become the next sheriff, just see if I don’t.” “Lord save us all,” he muttered.
I’m finding quite the soft spot for the sheriff. The things he has to suffer with, for, and becuase of Jane.
And Conrad and Beau! Man, how the universe is unfair. Our bookish heroines get all the guys. She has the bestest, sweetest boyfriend and the bestest, most supportive best friend. And they’re both hot, of course.
“I know that look,” Conrad said with a groan. Beau groaned, too. “One or both of us is breaking a law in the next twenty-four hours, guaranteed.”
I had a total of 6 notes and 33 highlights for this book, but I swear every scene was highlightable. I just had to read and enjoy at some points, though, you know?
“Every time we're together, I promise to do my best to give you a reason not to fall for me”
Mii piange il cuore a dire ciò che ho scritto sopra, ma capite quanto potenziale sprecato?💔
“Sherrif Moore said you refused to leave. I didn't want you feeling...alone”
I really enjoyed No Gravestone Left Unturned. It's book two in the Jane Ladling Mystery series, and a stand-alone, but I recommend reading book one first. Just because it's fun...and you should.
Jane is her usual funny, quirky, unbelievably clueless, and endearing self. Detective Special Agent Conrad Ryan is turning out to be very caring and patient and excellent boyfriend material (Jane would agree with this, but there's that pesky family curse standing in the way...). Jane's cohort Fiona is right there to help Jane with her investigations...or to provide world-famous blueberry pancakes. Beau's working hard to keep the graveyard (and Jane) safe with all of his security measures. And Rolex is his usual superior cat self.
So much laugh-snorting, and head-shaking, went on while I read Jane and the Truth Team's escapades. With lots of red herrings, and mistaken musings on Jane's part, the mystery kept me guessing and flipping pages to figure out whodunit. Maybe I should have worn an investigators hat while reading this book. Bet Jane has one I can borrow.
Many thanks to the authors and Author Talk Media for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
