In his own inimitable style, Ramsey Dukes takes us through the advantages and dangers of hobnobbing with Demons. However for him Demons are very much our own creations; life's problems and challenges personified and given form. We can either be their slaves or strike bargains and get back into the driving seat. With his characteristic wit and wisdom, Uncle Ramsey takes us on a rollercoaster ride through our own subconscious in a sustained effort for us to accept and negotiate with life's challenges.
Highlights include: • Summoning Demons, how to personalize a problem • Of Pacts or how to bargain with your psychic baggage • The Sacrifice or Jam today • Banishing your Demons for a positive life • Going beyond the personal; Cultural Demons
Ramsey Dukes has *such* a strong voice. It's a blessing and a curse: his words come across like he'd say them, but sometimes you want to whack him over the head (not too much, but maybe with a newspaper …).
The book aims to explain why ascribing emotions and personalities to things (and patterns and so on) can be good and useful. He has a wide range of examples, when he's not busy bashing the Tories or being patronishing, and he has some decent strategies to offer. Once again I'm regretting my vanished notes, but IIRC the book boiled down to being polite and kind and generally agreeable without letting things push you around.
He talks about felt sense, common failings, historical figures, and has a lot of very practical advice. If you can get past the tone (and the Tory bashing and Hitler comparisons and patronising voice and …), it's a good book to have read. If you can enjoy those things, like indulging your favourite uncle even when he's annoying, then it's even a good book to read.
I read this during the summer of 2020, and some combination of this book, meditation, cannabis, and extraordinary stress resulted in an experience that had counselors, doctors (both medical and academic), and psychiatrists all scratching their heads. Definitely changed my perspective on the world, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for everyone.
I wanted to like this more than I ended up liking it. I think there are some useful thought exercises here, but as much as the author might lambaste me for it, I can't bring myself to actually see 'demons' behind normal, human actions, whether good or bad.
Loved this book! It is a different and slightly humorous way of approaching the Jungian concept of the Shadow/Golden Shadow. If you have an off beat view of the world you will likely enjoy this book. Most magick is really just psycho-alchemy. And Uncle Ramsey does it well.
