My impression of essentials oils is that they are complicated. Too complicated for me to figure out. Still, the intrigue remains. And as a gardener, I feel like I should have some basic knowledge of essential oils.
This book was great. The language is straight-forward without unnecessary fluff. Anthis genuinely wants you to understand how to use essential oils, so her approach is very practical. The first part is a general overview, including how essential oils are produced, background/history, and how to use them.
Next, Anthis addresses carrier oils. I found this section especially helpful since I had no idea how and why carrier oils are used. For each carrier oil, she provides details regarding what the oil is good for, pros and cons, safety considerations, storage, and recommendations.
Next follows the key section outlining 30 essential oils. From origin, to extraction methods, description, precautions, uses, applications, and therapeutic actions, Anthis covers a lot of information in a little bit of space. Each outline also details what other essential oils this particular one blends well with as well as acceptable substitutes. This section alone makes the book worth purchasing.
In the final section, Anthis offers 100 recipes for using the 30 essential oils described in the book. Things like recipes for coughs and headaches are covered under physical health. Emotional health includes recipes for focus, energy, and anxiety. Another section has recipes for the family, including vapor rub and baby powder. Still another section lists recipes for personal care - including toothpaste and deodorant. And finally, the last section features how to make your own cleaning supplies. Truly, Anthis has thought of everything.
The book ends with suggestions for a travel kit and resources for purchasing essential oils.
There is definitely an art to using essential oils. It’s not something I think you can do on a whim. However, armed with Anthis’ information, you will confidently be able to make a very good start.
I’m excited to pursue this further! You’ll find me blogging about my efforts at www.Patch405.com.
I was offered an advance digital copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
I wish this book had a scratch and sniff component. I don't own all 30 of the essential oils that the author dubbed "essential" and used as the basis for her recipes, but I could get a good idea of what they would smell like based on the description. This book truly is a beginner's guide, but is also useful to anyone who is already familiar with oils, as it has a lot of "recipes," general information, and advice. This book has three parts: part one - an introduction and how to, part two - oil profiles and the top 30 most commonly used oils, part three - recipes and applications. The third section was most interesting to me as it went into how oils could be used for your emotional well being, health , personal care, family, and more. There are a ton of uses! I don't use oils in every aspect of my life by a long shot, but this book may empower me to try it out in new areas of my life. A great introductory book!
The Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils: Everything you need to know to get started by Christina Anthis
August 2019 Althea Press/Callisto Media Health, Wellness, nonfiction Rating: 5/5
The author was diagnosed at 10 yo with scoliosis requiring several spinal surgeries. The sequela of nerve pain, narcolepsy and a chronically poor immune system proved more than she could handle. This propelled her interest and education into natural healing with plants.
She details the history of modern medicine and its roots derived from the past use of plants. She is the author of a blog (Hippyhomemaker.com) addressing health and aromatherapy to improve health naturally. The book is nicely organized into three sections which succinctly address each topic.
In section 1, she provides an interesting history of the origins of essential oils and aromatherapy dating back to 2,500 BCE in Egypt. Natural healing is the foundation of Ayurvedic medicine. Of note, Aromathérapie (1937) by Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, was written by this perfume chemist who treated soldiers during WWI with essential oils. Likewise, oils were utilized during WWII by French army surgeon Jean Valnet.
In the USA, Robert Tisserand remains the expert in the science and safety of oils with his comprehensive 1977 manual, The Art of Aromatherapy. It is the reference used as the Standard of Essential Oils practice for safety. The safe use of essential oils cannot be over emphasized with the abundance of oils being marketed. There are only a few organizations which set guidelines for proper use: Associate French Normalization Organization Regulation and the Alliance of International Aromatherapist are two the author mentions.
I am a medical professional who uses essential oils for health and wellness. Although I’m not trained as an aromatherpist, I certainly agree with the necessity to ensure that people have accurate information regarding the use of essential oils. I find the chemistry of the plants essential oils fascinating but that would not keep most readers interest. The author explains the importance of diluting oils in appropriate carrier oils. Most people might be surprised to learn that there are recommendations regarding the percentage of dilution. It is important to consider the person, their health and desired results.
I was particularly interested in the explanation of blending oils according to the aroma notes and length of evaporation. Aroma top notes evaporate quickly 1-2 hours, which includes many of the citrus oils. Middle note oils evaporate within 2-4 hours, such as pepper, cinnamon, chamomile, rose and tea tree. Base notes are the longest to evaporate; cedar wood, frankincense, ginger, vanilla, vétiver.
In section 2, the most common 30 essential oils are provided in alphabetical order outlining the specifics of each oil.
Section 3 provides 100 recipes for application and use of essential oils which are categorized for: physical health, home, family and emotional well-being. The book concludes with numerous references and sources.
This book begins with an explanation of what essential oils are, how they are manufactured, and safety precautions for their use. There are lists of basic equipment, types of applications, blends and dilutions that can be used.
The next sections detail types of carrier oils and essential oils with all their properties, uses, and precautions. There are even suggested substitutes for each oil in case you don't have it.
The last section is divided into recipes and blends for physical and mental health, for the home and family, and for personal care. The recipes include soaps, salves, compresses, throat gargle, deodorant, lip balm, facial cleanser, moisturizer. Their uses include relief from pain, stress, cough, congestion, nausea, eczema, headache, insomnia, and dozens more.
Each recipe has clear instructions with tips and hints for getting the best results from the essential oils. All the information appears reliable and safe. The author seems very knowledgeable, and I trust their writing.
I can't wait to try out some of these helpful essential oil recipes! The fragrance blends sound wonderful, and very practical for health and well-being.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a free and honest review. All the opinions stated here are my own true thoughts, and are not influenced by anyone.
The author has taken a great deal of time to explain the proper use and benefits of essential oils. Her recipes are really great for anyone who wants to start using EOs for lots of conditions. One of the things that I was taught from Day 1 is to NEVER put essential oils in the ears, however, the author has a recipe for "earache oil". I would caution this use. The other thing that I was taught is that the FDA prohibits the sharing of oils as a curative - so one can't say that essential oils cures a specific condition - and the author does say that in her recipes. That being said, the recipes appear to be really well thought out and would be useful. All in all, I really like this book for the recipes for personal use, diffusing, sprays, cleaners, and more.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
I just started using essential oils so I bought this book to help. It has some good information, such as an introduction to the different ways how essential oils are made, different carrier oils, what the 30 most popular oils are used for and some of her most used recipes. However, it is a lot of information thrown at you and just alphabetically. But it would’ve also been nice to have things organized by category or charts.
This was definitely a beginner's book, but it was still very informative. I was hoping for more theory on combining scents, but that was a miss on the book. I liked how she explained components and gave recipes, and broke down guidance via tables.
I recommend to fans looking for an intro to essential oils. This is a great starter.
The Beginner's Guide to Essential Oils is a practical tutorial guide with recipes on using and understanding essential oils by Christina Anthis. Due out 20th Aug 2019 from Althea press, it's 186 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats. Worth noting, the ebook version of the book is available already (11 Aug).
This is an appealing book, with clean graphics and easy to understand language. The book's logical layout (and interactive links) make it easy to navigate.
It's unclear from the publishing info available online, but the eARC I received has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references. I hope the ebook release version does also. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. Presumably that feature will carry through to the final release version.
The book's introductory chapters cover some definitions, basic ingredients and oil processing methods of production, tools and other definitions. The second chapter contains how-to's regarding use, storage, judging oil strength and quality, safety, and reading labels.
The second full section contains chapters on choosing carrier oils for different purposes as well as profiles and uses for 30 different essential oils.
The third section contains the recipes and uses. These include a wide variety of recipes for different purposes and with varying effects. There are household cleaning products, health and beauty, wellness, deodorizers, sprays, roll-ons and more made with gentle safe ingredients.
These are appealing and well written recipes. It is definitely slanted toward the layperson. My only quibble with the book (and it's a small one) is that it includes a fair bit of alternative 'woo'. For example, there is no scientific evidence that putting aromatics on the bottoms of the feet will ameliorate coughs, but that advice is in the book. On the other hand, as a healthcare professional in a hospital setting, I've personally heard exactly the same advice being dispensed by a western medicine trained practicing physician. Nothing written in the book, used as stated, will be dangerous, and all the usual disclaimers apply. These are good and gentle alternatives for a lot of the products which we use every day, especially the cleaning supplies listed in the book are better than those which are commercially available.
I heartily recommend the book to anyone looking for a bit of DIY in our household and beauty/health products.
Five stars. Well done. The resources and references at the back of the book (aimed toward readers in North America, but usable for readers in other areas of course) are very comprehensive and likely worth the price of the book on their own merits.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This is a nice essential oil introduction book! I especially appreciated the carrier oil profiles as many essential oil books overlook the different benefits of different carriers and just say, "use a carrier" without any explanation. It is really nice that each recipe clearly states at the top "Safe for all ages". . . "Not safe while nursing or pregnant". . . "Safe for ages 6+"... .etc. There's nothing as annoying as finding a great EO recipe and then having to spend half an hour reading safety studies for each essential oil to remember if it's safe for your life stage. One thing I found interesting was that Anthis says not to use peppermint (and several other oils) until age 6. Most MLM companies will tell you that you can use peppermint at any age, but many accredited essential oil safety organizations say not to use peppermint on a child younger than 10. I hadn't heard age 6 used as the cut off before, but it sounds like a reasonable, safe middle ground. I'll be looking into it further though.
I received this book free, but all opinions are my own.
This is a excellent guide to essential oil use that I highly recommend. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My opinion is my own.
Here is a easy to follow comprehensive guide to the use of, safety, variety of and recipes of using essential oils. The author has included carrier oils and how to blend household and personal products. I appreciate the extensive recipes included. There are three different sections: introduction getting started, oil profiles, and the recipes. I can see myself using this book for years to come. It is a necessary part of my goal of using only oils and pure products in my home. This book continues the education for those of us that are using oils to clean our homes and making our own oil products. A very highly recommended this book as a personal guide for all who want to explore, begin or even have some education already of essential oils. There is so much to learn here . Very well done to the author.
Essential oils seem to be everywhere, and I've used a few of them in the past. There are so many brands and scents out there that it can be overwhelming or confusing to know which one to use for what purpose. This book is laid out in a way that's easy to understand by the average reader (particularly those new to essential oils) will be able to follow. Those who have been using oils for years will likely find this book useful, as well. I've tried a few of the mixtures (recipes) in the past, and I'm looking forward to trying many of those included in this book. If you're interested in essential oils and how they can be a natural alternative to other things, this is a good book to check out.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.
This is not the usual type of book that I review but it is a topic that I am interested in my normal life. I really enjoyed that the author made it clear that you should always consult your physician before working with essential oils.
The book is broken down into 3 different sections, and introduction getting started, oil profiles, and last but not least the recipes. The breakdown of this book is very important because it helps you build a foundation to create your own recipes. It isn’t just about making pretty scents to freshen the way your house smells, its about creating recipes that can help you with things like headaches and stress. Sometimes a little lavender can go a long was to help you relax. If you are looking for a way to start learning about essential oils this is the book to get!
#TheBeginnersGuideToEssentialOils #NetGalley Thanks @Netgalley for my Ebook! Everywhere you look, there is someone selling, or talking about essential oils, and the the healing properties they have. I was interested, but found using search engines too overwhelming, and not really knowing if the articles were trustworthy. I saw this book on netgalley, and was approved to read it I found it to be a very informative book. I learned a lot about what essential oils do, what carrier oils work best, and what oils work together. I took notes, and can't wait to try making my own oils.
