I was the pampered princess with the perfect life and the perfect husband. Then the Event happened, stripping me of my family, and foisting me into ruling. Things changed again, I changed, and this time, I don't know if I can come back.
Widowed Princess Kesara never planned to rule Ustea. But now she not only has to rule but in order to rule, she must marry. Her Council has devised a way to pick a suitor for her, but the Rebels have different plans for her. Can she figure out who is telling her the truth, who is lying, and what path she must follow to save not only herself but her people?
This is a dark, enemies to lovers, post-apocalyptic, paranormal romance that will have a happy ever after ending at the conclusion of the story. It contains scenes of bullying and abuse that is recommended for 18+.
So, this is the first book that I have read by the author, but I really did end up liking this one!
The world itself is a bit confusing. It is a post-apocalyptic ish setting, but at the same time, kinda not. There are a lot of modern references, but the setting is a kingdom.
The FMC grew up a princess, and although I couldn't pinpoint an age for her, she is old enough to be married.
To be completely honest, I couldn't stand her at the beginning, and almost put down the book. However, her development throughout the story was fantastic, with a gradual change which I appreciate.
The book is worth the read, that is for sure.
There are some triggers to be aware of, but I did not find it to be a bloody Dark Romance as much as a BDSM type theme.
Voltaic has a magic element that guarantees active engagement with the reader. Not engagement as in a professor suddenly sitting up straight in his chair and whispering, “Oh my.” No, this is the type where the reader jumps up out of the chair, pounds a fist on the table, and screams at the book, “Open your eyes, you idiot! Don’t do that—do this instead.”
Yes, there is a lot of that in K.B. Wheelock’s Voltaic. What appears obvious to readers often glides right over the heads of some oblivious characters. We watch helplessly as some of our favorites appear to be on a path toward disaster, and we try vainly to talk them into turning aside. I don’t know about other readers, but I was successful several times in talking characters into stopping to take a closer look at their next steps. I can thus take pride in my contribution to the plot, even though it was written long before I even read the first page.
We have a pampered princess who may or may not be a pawn in a major powerplay. America has fallen apart after an “Event” that has had an apocalyptic impact on the world. Our princess finds herself thrust into a position she never anticipated. Manipulated by those who seek to exploit her, she is further hampered by a society that refuses to recognize women as equals. She has power but fails to realize it.
Voltaic is the first volume of a series, so not all questions are answered here. We finish with several of our characters hanging from a cliff (figuratively), so we are anxious to continue on to the second volume, Stoaic. And the fact that the reader is anxious to start in on the next book is proof enough that Voltaic is a good read. I recommend it.
Excellent dark post-apocalyptic romance - basically it’s intense!
Voltaic is definitely a look at some uncomfortable truths of human nature. Combining a political revolution and a kind of apocalypse ratchets tensions to a breaking point. Add in elemental powers and how will people react? Each character shows some growth in the book, but not so much as to be unbelievable. I am very much looking forward to book 2!
This book sounded so intriguing I couldn’t pass it up. It was even better than I imagined. Thought provoking and very entertaining, I enjoyed reading it.
I requested a copy of this book so I could provide an honest review.
