The stories themselves are interesting, however the writing style is problematic.

The most jarring stylistic problem is changing between present tense and past tense, sometimes within a single sentence. An example: “The season was early spring, and a particularly stubborn cold front had moved in over the weekend and continues to linger over the local area.” This wasn’t just a single spelling error (continues vs continued) but was consistent throughout the stories.

The second problem was how conversations were handled. There would be a quote and then a sentence of the form “Replied Andrew”. As an example, the author would write:
“That is surprising.” Said John.
The accepted way to write that would be:
“That is surprising,” said John.
It might seem like a small quibble but it became very distracting.

The third problem also related to conversations. All the characters spoke in run-on sentences using commas to combine multiple sentences. Something on the order of: “That’s good, I’m happy you are here, follow me.”

There were also a few strange word choices, exhumed instead of exude, springs to mind. Very different meanings.

With some decent copy editing these stories would be much better. As the book is now, the poor copy editing detracts from the stories.

I received a free copy of this book and chose to write a review.

This has potential. The storylines are quite interesting and I feel original. The author has shown imagination.

The problem with the books can, and I think should, be fixed. The author shows a certain level of knowledge, but the level of "just enough to get in trouble with". In several areas, he has mentioned things that show he may have a basic knowledge, but fails when trying to go into detail. One particular area is military protocol and customs and courtesy. This is very apparent in his second story when a subordinate officer enters an admirals office and walks up an shakes the admirals hand. Not done. When reporting, a salute is always in order. Even when friends.

There are also many errors in grammar, word usage and misuse. Not enough to stop the average reader, but I found the number to be off-putting.

More life experience may help with his writing, as well as consulting experts when writing on subjects on which his knowledge level is not high.

I do recommend Mr. Haedo continue to pursue a writing career. As I stated, his stories have very interesting premises.

I love anthologies for the opportunity explore multiple works at one go. This collection provides five different science fiction stories, so all good on that front. Unfortunately I am not fond of politics or social commentary and that comprised the majority of the content of all five stories. I also suspect that English is not the author's first language, which led to some awkward grammar and phrasing. I did like some of the ideas behind the stories, but not enough to put up with the other issues.

I received an ARC from Hidden Gems for review purposes.

Ok

It was ok. Not one or five of my favorite books. I still like books that have more action in them.
